This ic caused by Debian using a newer jquery. If you use the jquery
from upstram thunderbird (which is 1.6) it works again.

please take a look at the messeages inside a terminal while you start
Icedove from there. There are some possibilities to expand the output of
Icedove.

https://wiki.debian.org/Icedove#Debugging_Icedove_Activity

I have tested the 42.0~b1 in various constellations before the upload
and didn't had any bad experience so we have to figure out what's
causing this behavior.

Above you wrote you did a clean fresh new install, online later you wrote you
have installed the version from experimental over the versionf from
unstable, this is a little bit contrariwise.

Carsten

About this part, what I mean is that there was no previous working
icedove being upgraded.  So no accounts initialised or anything like
that.

I switched from unstable to experimental because that is what
'reportbug' prompted me to do.  The experimental version failed to work
in exactly the same way as the unstable one.

I will look at getting more debug output and reply separately about
that.

Here is what I get when running from commandline:
eliot@eliot:~$ NSPR_LOG_MODULES=all:5 NSPR_LOG_FILE=~/icedove-
activity.log icedove

This produced a 43MB log file,  I can send it somewhere if you think it
may be of use.

I'm very surprised that (1) this happening, and (2) that nobody saw it.
If you had seen it, you wouldn't have uploaded this version.
BTW no need to tell me "you're on unstable so what do you expect" :)
I (obviously) have other ways to send/receive email.

if you have checked that there are no personal data inside you can
compress the log file and append it to the bug report. Or send it to me
directly. The best compress rate will be get by creating a *.xz archive.
We don't need probably the whole file (43MB), I suspect there are
repeating parts inside.

Without bug reports we couldn't improve the packages on errors we don't
see, so no, I wont say that.
Mozilla has released a new beta version of 42.0, but currently I don't
now when we will upload this new version.

2015-10-18 Thread Eliot Blennerhassett
Package: icedove
Version: 42.0~b1-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Dear Maintainer,

When I run icedove, the "Welcome to Icedove" dialog appears.
However, none of the the three buttons on that dialog results in the dialog
closing.
The only thing to be done is kill the application.

This is a new install of icedove on a new system (so no preexisting profile).

I am running icedove (42.0~b1-1) from experimental (installed over (38.3.0-1))
Both do the same thing.

regards

Eliot

I can also confirm that 64 bit thunderbird 38.3.0 does *not* have this
problem.
