Bug#301430: Multiple exploitable race conditions in openmosixview
severity 301430 serious tags 301430 + patch tags 301430 + upstream tags 301430 + security thanks On Thu, Mar 31, 2005 at 08:46:41PM -0500, Hubert Chan wrote: I believe this bug is fixed by two patches that can be found at: http://uw-dig.uwaterloo.ca/~hy3chan/patches/openmosixview/1.5/ (patches 20-logdirectory.diff and 50-nonodestmp.diff). I think that they should apply cleanly without the other patches -- probably at worst with some fuzz. I'm trying to confirm with the people who originally reported the vulnerability to check that the patches do indeed fix the issues that they reported, but I'm pretty sure they do. The patches found there (except for 99debian.diff) have already been accepted by upstream for inclusion in the next release of openMosixView. 20-logdirectory.diff may break other software that depends on a predictable location for the openMosixViewCollector logs (such as openMosixWebView, not included in Debian, and I think that openMosixWebView has been changed to check both locations). But I don't think there's any other way around it -- besides, upstream is already going to implement the change in the next release. For reference, my mail to Rexotec (the original reporters) and the openMosixView mailing list can be found at: http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=11330106 Nice news. I'll keep an eye to the proposed patches before committing. The symlink exploit should be obviously manageable. -- Francesco P. Bug#295657: EXT3 on RAID problems in all 2.6-smp
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 I'm seeing similar problems. I've now seen it twice. The first one was with kernel-image-2.6.8-1-686-smp. Unfortunately, I can't find the exakt error messages from that time, but if I recall correctly, they were very similar to the ones listed earlier in this bug, as well as to the ones later in this message. At that time, I did some googling, and found some indications that the problem might have to do with apic, so I turned off apic (which I was getting loads of warning messages about in dmesg), and hoped for the best. Unfortunately, yesterday, it happened again, now with kernel-image-2.6.8-2-686-smp. Relevant error messages from dmesg: EXT3-fs error (device dm-4): ext3_find_entry: bad entry in directory #7176199: inode out of bounds - offset=192512, inode=4294967167, rec_len=64, name_len=55 Aborting journal on device dm-4. ext3_abort called. EXT3-fs abort (device dm-4): ext3_journal_start: Detected aborted journal Remounting filesystem read-only The filesystem is a 100G ext3 on top of lvm2 on top of a RAID1 md with two 160G ATA disks. Running fsck took about 16 hours, and gave us a situation where about 8G of the 40G data on the disk went into lost+found. Not so funny. I'll now try a UP kernel, probably kernel-image-2.6.10-1-686. I consider this bug rather important. Being able to build cheap large file servers based on Linux is an important strength of the OS. Having it crash like this gives bad credibility. The machine is a Dual PIII/850, 1G ram. Kernel was booted with 'root=/dev/md0 ro noapic' as commandline. There are lots and lots of files on this file system, hosting mail files in Maildir format. Bug#241497: RFC and status report: Kernel upgrades for woody-sarge upgrades

I've tried to use the available information to provide the needed files for these kernel upgrades. To my knowledge the affected machines/architecures are currently hppa64, sparc sun4m (only some of them) and 80386. It's all hppa machines, not just hppa64. Then why does the libc6 preinst say that the minimum kernel is 2.4.17 for parisc, and 2.4.19 for parisc64? If this is an error, it will need to be reconciled before release. It is not an error. I submitted the patch. Userspace requires a 32-bit kernel of atleast 2.4.17, and a 64-bit kernel of atleast 2.4.19. The 64-bit code has some orthogonal issues that took time to fix. Both could be made to require 2.4.19, and infact the upstream glibc patch set the requirement to 2.4.19. Well, requiring 2.4.19 for 32-bit would imply a need for additional upgrade testing; so if it's not actually needed, I think we're best off leaving glibc's preinst the way it is. Bug#302160: Reason for crash solved
Hello, I finally found the reason for the mysterious crash: it resulted from a corrupted afm-file in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/. So the bug actually should read something like: OpenOffice.Org crashes when it tries to read a non-ascii character in an afm file. Of course, there shouldn't ever be any non-ascii characters in afm files, but other programs may have bugs in them, too... A suggested solution: instead of crashing, ignore the font, perhaps with a notice, that the font OpenOffice.org was trying to read is corrupted. -- Harri Kiiskinen -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#302573: cnews: newsrun can overwrite already decompressed batches while using mutliple UUCP feeds
Package: cnews Version: cr.g7-37 Severity: critical Justification: causes serious data loss I just stumbled upon this bug in newsrun, which has caused some lost newsbatches for me. Lets say you have multiple newsfeeds via UUCP, using different compression methods (e.g. compress and gzip). As incoming newsbatches are processed by rnews, they are given temporary filenames in /var/spool/news/in.coming, consisting of an timestamp and an suffix denoting the compression method. These suffixes are .t for uncompressed, .z for compressed using gzip, .Z for compressed using compress and so on. Two batches coming in at the same time (such as when polling multiple systems in parallel) and differing only in the compression method will thus get an filename differing only in the suffix, e.g. 12345678.z and 12345678.Z (note the case of the suffix). /usr/lib/news/input/newsrun is then run by cron and in a first stage decompresses all compressed newsbatches. This is done by the following lines of code (line 124 ff.): - by cutting here you might damage your screen surface - [...] # Decompress if necessary. case $f in *.Z)text=`echo $f | sed 's/Z\$/t/'` uncompress $f $text ;; *.z)text=`echo $f | sed 's/z\$/t/'` gzip -dc $f $text ;; [and so on] - by cutting here you might damage your screen surface - As one can see, an batch named 12345678.Z is decompressed into 12345678.t. An batch named 12345678.z is _also_ decompressed into 12345678.t. Depending on which one is picked up first, one of the two batches _will_ be lost irrevocabily. A possible solution would be to change the sed command to alter the timestamp also, amending a letter just before the suffix .t. As no two compressed batches with the same timestamp and suffix will be created by rnews, this should be a reasonable safeguard. (This bug must have lingered in CNews for about a decade now. Is it really possible that I am the first person to stumble upon it?) Bug#302585: Please shorten hook script name
Package: zeroconf Version: 0.2-1 Severity: serious The ifup hook script is currently called '/etc/network/if-up.d/zeroconf-up'. There is no need for an '-up' suffix because the file is in the if-up.d directory. Other packages follow the convention of naming their hook scripts after themselves, without an -up or down suffix. Please follow this convention. I have filed this at an RC severity in order to prevent the package from migrating to testing while you consider this issue. I only do this for convenience. Once the package is in testing there is more of an obligation to implement these changes in a foolproof manner, which in this case requires renaming code in the preinst. So long as the package is only in unstable I think you should feel free simply to rename the file. -- System Information: Debian Release: 3.1 APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing'), (50, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.10 Locale: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] (charmap=ISO-8859-15) Versions of packages zeroconf depends on: ii ifupdown0.6.4-4.12 high level tools to configure netw ii iproute 20041019-3 Professional tools to control the ii libc6 2.3.2.ds1-20 GNU C Library: Shared libraries an -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#297181: How to handle unreproducible RC bugs when the submitter is MIA?
Dear release team, #297181 is unreproducible, and the submitter has not answered to our questions for a while. I am quite confident that this bug is really PEBCAK, or more specifically a local misconfiguration, or some old locally installed Emacs lisp files lying around. I do not think that this bug justifies auctex's removal from testing; on the other hand, I don't think it would be proper to lower its severity before we know more. But we cannot know whether the submitter will answer again and allow us to decide, and possibly fix or reassign, before sarge is frozen. How should this bug be handled? I'm cc-ing -devel, because this question seems to be of general interest. Please note that I am not subscribed to -release (but get mail to -devel or the bug address). retitle 292322 please clear up license statements clone 292322 -1 retitle -1 documentation is not DFSG-free severity 292322 normal # -1 is still RC, I'll send a mail to -release in order to tag it # sarge-ignore as soon as it has a bug number. thanks [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Frank Küster) wrote: Dear Mr Raman, (I'm the one who brought the issue up in Debian), T. V. Raman [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The references to DEC and Adobe are legacy. Good to hear that. With that statement, IMO we can use emacspeak 21.0 as is without need for urgent changes. Together with this statement from an older mail to this bug: , T. V. Raman | Jim -- My intention has always been GPL pure and simple, same as | linux. ` it is clear that this package is DFSG-free. However, this should be indicated not only in the bug log, but also clearly in the package sources and copyright file. I hope this will be done in the next upstream version, anyway. So we'd better lower the severity of this bug _now_, so that it is not removed from sarge. James, how is your packaging of 21.0 going? Any chances for an upload that could make it into sarge, now that the release team has again promised to freeze soon? There's one more small point, the license of the documentation. The info files currently don't permit modification, and the user's guide and install manual are under GFDL. You might have heard that Debian has a problem with the GFDL, while the FSF recommends it (and delegations of both groups are currently trying to sort this out). I don't want to bother you with these discussions. But to put it simple: Maybe this is no longer true, with the above cited statement. But as it stands, it is RC, but sarge-ignore. Bug#302412: exploitable temporary file race in unshar (fwd)

The first was a typo that I didn't notice until my script was already running. It is my intention to release in REL-x subdirectories. It reduces clutter. These new issues will get faster action with a suggested patch :-). Ok, here is a patch that maybe you can accept: Looks fine to me. It may be a couple of weeks tho, taxes and my day job take priority. :) This patch tries not to break the MSDOS stuff. Thanks. Bug#302587: mysqld_safe starts then immediately stops
Hello Mark I'm downgrading the bug a bit as it was not reported by anybody else and thus is probably a problem specific to your site. Bug#302587: mysqld_safe starts then immediately stops
Hello On 2005-04-01 Mark Rushing wrote: Double-checked it being stopped before doing anything. Even rebooted after the upgrade to just make sure all libraries were right. Running it directly gives a segmentation fault. Can it be that you're using NIS/LDAP in /etc/nsswitch.conf? There was a bug some weeks ago with similar crashes. In this case just update to the very latest version from either 4.0 or 4.1. Pls tell me if the bug is gone then. bye, -christian- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#302519: severity serious
severity 302519 serious thanks This bug should be fixed for sarge. In looking for the cause of the bug I have realized that ifupdown is missing a versioned Dependency on initscripts which supplies a necessary version of the readlink program; this alone justifies another sarge-targeted release. However, because the submitter had a satisfactory version of initscripts installed, I don't yet know where the bug lies. -- Thomas Hood [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#299316: rsnapshot: FTBFS: aclocal-1.4 missing
Hi, On Fri, 2005-04-01 at 17:50 +0200, Christoph Wegscheider wrote: I tested it again and again, but I can't reproduce it. The one time I could I changed the mtime of the files. However 2 other bugs needs to be resolved so I prepared a new package. Please test it for another FTBFS bug on you box. it runs fine on mine here with and without pbuilder. The same problem is still present. As I already told you, it's more likely for you to reproduce the bug more successfully if you don't try to build it in your normal development directory, but instead take the resulting *.tar.gz, *.dsc and *.diff.gz and (e.g.) build that (with pbuilder) in another location in your file system. Adding touch aclocal.m4 Makefile.in configure before the ./configure call in debian/rules fixes the problem for me. bye, Roland -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#302519: Bug #302519: ifupdown: postinst fails
To the submitter: A better short-term workaround if you prefer not to edit conffiles that are hopefully going to be fixed soon, is to do # mkdir /var/run/network # ln -sf /var/run/network/ /etc/network/run Otherwise the underlying bug might show up next time you boot, anyway. The culprit seems to be the following snippet (lines 92ff, reformated for email) in the postinst of -4.12: if RUN_CANONICALDIR=$(readlink -f /etc/network/run) [ $RUN_CANONICALDIR ] ; then if ! mkdir $RUN_CANONICALDIR ; then report_err Failure creating directory ${RUN_CANONICALDIR}. Aborting. exit 1 fi else report_err \ The canonical path of /etc/network/run could not be determined. Aborting. exit 1 fi The problem is that readlink -f /etc/network/run returns nothing and exits with failure when /etc/network/run is a dangling symlink, so the mkdir that is the point of this code never gets a chance to run. This behavior is exhibited by the readlink in coreutils 5.2.1-2 (sid+sarge), but not for the readlink in debianutils 1.6.2woody1 (woody). Code that depends on readlink -f being able to stop at a dangling symlink also appears in /etc/init.d/{ifupdown,ifupdown-clean} and will abort the boot initialization on systems where /etc/network/run refers to a ramdisk. (Which I suppose is the default, as I do not remember having done anything to redirect /etc/network/run myself). Refusing to work with dangling links is the documented behavior in GNU readlink, so coreutils probably cannot be faulted for this. A quick-and-dirty workaround that should work in the most common cases would be to say $(readlink -f /etc/network/run || readlink /etc/network/run) instead of just $(readlink -f /etc/network/run) in all three affected files. -- Henning MakholmI ... If you install php4-cgi from the same suite as you installed php4-cli from, the file conflict isn't there. I was sure I was installing from sid... Sorry about that. But shouldn't php4-cli declare a conflict (or Replace?) with the php4-cgi versions having the file then? -- Lionel -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#302519: Bug #302519: ifupdown: postinst fails
Scripsit Henning Makholm The culprit seems to be the following snippet (lines 92ff, reformated for email) in the postinst of -4.12: Oops, a little further attempt at understanding the bug logs told me that this is not helpful at all. Sorry for the interruption. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
