FWIW, it _does_ build with an older zoem. I'll prepare a fixed uruk

Bug#349354: Linux or debian

2006-02-27 Thread Gustaf Räntilä
Hi all,

You seem to have problems with something called yaird, whatever that is.
My problem is that the udev package needs kernel modules
in /lib/modules/2.6.15-1-686. Mine is in 2.6.15.3... Why is the udev
package script looking at that particular directory? I really hope it's
not because that's where the debian kernel packages are, you really need
to support us using our own compiled kernels.
It's easy for me to fix, just symlink my modules to whatever pleases a
debian package for the moment, but I'd prefer a dialog; "Where are your
kernel modules, I couldn't find them", or even better, doing a uname.
In my case uname says 2.6.15.3, just as the directory of my modules.
Those are my suggestions anyway.

/Gustaf

Yet the BTS can handle this by parsing the changelog instead of doing
  dpkg version comparison, see #333822.

I think the correct action is to close this bug, and ask ftpmaster for
removal of the binaries (which I'll be doing next).

In the past i had a similar problem: sometimes, with no appearing

I simply couldn't understand what could be, since the hard disk seemed

After i commented out that line, i hadn't no more corruption.

I don't know if this can be your case.

This is where your issue seems to live. I have never seen the read
error and ecc corrected number not matching. It would mean that an error
occurs but there has been no way to make it right so I would expect the
read to be garbage... Did you see any corruption in your files? I mean
data corrupted instead of metadata?

Also, you say that sata does not support smart. That is not true, with
one of the very recent kernels (2.6.15.4), you can get them. I have not
much experience with the kernels shipped with debian. I always recompile
my own. But some problems I had with an nfs server (in an HPC system)
vanished when I upgraded from 2.6.12 to 2.6.14. There was a bug with the
futex, and I think that was the source of my problems (race conditions
are always nasty).

As for the udma crc? That usually means that your controller/cable is
going bad. Each time I have seen that, the whole system crashed
corrupting files everywhere... That is pretty odd that you see the thig
on two different system though.

jacques

PS: With development kernels, always try to use the latest. Especially
when you see a problem. (And I still consider the 2.6 as being a
development version)

Over the weekend I confirmed that removing the ".SECONDARY:" fixed the
problem, at the slight expense of make being less convenient while doing
development. I've checked it works OK on x86, and have left vore to
churn at it.

Bug#354654: general: fat32 gets corrupted

2006-02-27 Thread Juan Piñeros
Package: general
Severity: critical

Dear all,

I had two vfat crashes, rather similar in two machines (laptops) with debian,
dual boot windows xp:

- machine1 (compaq nx9010 with celeron): ide disk 30GB (-- System Information:
Debian Release: 3.1, Architecture: i386 (i686), Kernel: Linux 2.6.8-1-686,
Locale: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] (charmap=ISO-8859-15), libc6
Version: 2.3.2.ds1-22)

- machine2 (ibm thinkpad r52 with pentium M): etch, kernel: 2.6.12-1-386, sata
disk 80GB, (no physical access at the moment to this machine so no way for
more system information).

In machine1 vfat, 40% of directories where lost (however recoverable under
windows using a commercial crash recovery soft). In machine2, 100% was lost
in a first crash, but it is random, since the problem is repeating from time
to time, and not always everything is lost. Sometimes we lost what was used
the day before, and sometimes everithing except the files we used. Lost
directories are not located always at the same level.

I do not find any logical explanation. No strange message in syslog, we used
"normal" programs (konqueror, thunderbird, oowriter) when sudenly when try to
save a file or read mail, an error appears just saying that the directories
did not exist any more.

In both cases, fat32 was formated under windows.

I had smartd running on machine1, nothing strange (maybe a high temperature of
the disk +-53°C). On machine2, smartd is not installable since it does not
work with sata.

Here below the fstab files, plus a smart test on machine1. It was difficult to
install sata support in machine2, the strange procedure I used is also
described below. Find also a lspci for machine1 and 2.

Looking closer at the logs, I see that dhclient.leases is used.

Here's this file in my vmware virtual machine while it runs th

The "Download debconf preseed file" appears immediately after the
"Configure network" item has been run.

Running it seems to trigger network-preseed.postinst, which I made
"set -x" as suggested.

The result is that attached log file. It features a first attempt
*without* "set -x" and another one *with* it

I also add /var/lib/preseed/log though I think it is useless here.

Well, my vmware setup didn't change in last weeks..:-)

The DHCP server setup is typical Vmware:

#
# Configuration file for ISC 2.0b6pl1 vmnet-dhcpd operating on vmnet8.
#
# This file was automatically generated by the VMware configuration program.
# If you modify it, it will be backed up the next time you run the
# configuration program.
#
# We set domain-name-servers to make some DHCP clients happy
# (dhclient as configued in SuSE, TurboLinux, etc.).
# We also supply a domain name to make pump (Red Hat 6.x) happy.
#
allow unknown-clients;
default-lease-time 1800;# 30 minutes
max-lease-time 7200;# 2 hours

subnet 192.168.7.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
range 192.168.7.128 192.168.7.254;
option broadcast-address 192.168.7.255;
option domain-name-servers 192.168.7.2;
option domain-name "localdomain";
option routers 192.168.7.2;
}

So, no special parameters passed as DHCP options or whatever...just
standard stuff...

I'm currently trying a medium priority install

This is a bug with libfreetype which borke its backward compatibility
and hence im-uim.so. I'm reassigning to the IM package for other
people to see the issue, but the bug is in freetype.

Since both bugs are arguably kernel bugs (some modules on some platforms
can't work without also loading ide-generic, but the kernel provides no
mechanism to find that out), I think it has rather a lot to do with the
issue at hand.

An MIA upstream is indeed a serious problem. A maintainer being
unwilling to accept a bad hack to work around brokenness elsewhere is
less of an issue, at least IMHO.

Bug#345755: debian fglrx driver

2006-02-27 Thread Guenther Sommer
i'm also having a system without X atm as the fglrx-package and X.Org
don't like each other...

please just give only a short info if you plan a fix soon or if you lack
the time for it at the moment (which is also ok!), so i know if i should
fix it myself for me.

thank you for your work with the drivers till now, were running very
good on my HP nc6000.

with kind regards, guenther sommer.

Bug#354622: Using Firefox as the app name without official branding is still a trademark violation

2006-02-27 Thread Mike Connor

Package: firefox
Version: 1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.1-2
Severity: serious

Firefox (the name) is equally protected and controlled by the same
trademark policy and legal requirements as the Firefox logo. You're
free to use any other name for the browser bits, but calling the browser
Firefox requires the same approvals as are required for using the logo
and other artwork.

Bug#354620: gnupg: 1.4.1-1sarge1 security update not installed by default on amd64 because 1.4.1-1.0.1 exists

2006-02-27 Thread Robert King

Package: gnupg
Version: 1.4.1-1sarge1
Severity: grave
Justification: user security hole
Tags: security

*** Please type your report below this line ***
The gnupg update announced in DSA-978-1 does not install on an amd64
stable system, because on amd64 only, there exists a version 1.4.1-1.0.1

This version is (from the changelog)
gnupg (1.4.1-1.0.1) unstable; urgency=low

  * BinNMU to get the depedencyies on libusb and libreadline, they were
missing in the last upload.

 -- Kurt Roeckx <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Wed, 18 May 2005 22:19:13 +0200

It seems that the necessary fix is a 1.4.1-1.0.1sarge1 on amd64 only,
which should be a simple re-build of 1.4.1-1sarge1 with the required
changed dependencies.
I've rated this as grave because it currently means amd64 stable users
who track security won't get the security update.

Sorry! I lost your bug report, and I noticed only today.

I think it is not a bug of LXR because: LXR doesn't use
directly libdb.
We use/depend only perl (which depends on libdb).
The line 31 of genxref is the inclusion of this library:
  31: use DB_File;

So I think there was a temporary problem on upgrade of perl and
libdb on etch (testing).

Could you confirm that you can use now genxref without problems?

If you think I'm wrong, if you have other informations, or
if the bug is still alive, please reopen the bug!

Sorry again for the late reply!

Bug#354614: foomatic-gui: segfaults when invoked

2006-02-27 Thread Ramakrishnan Muthukrishnan
Package: foomatic-gui
Version: 0.7.4.18
Severity: grave

Hi,

Invoking foomatic-gui from terminal, it simply segfaults. No other info
is available. WIll be glad to provide you more data if you need more data
in debugging. The printer here is Samsung ML-1250 (which I still haven't
gotten to work with Debian). I installed foomatic-gui durring my failed
efforts for the whole of today trying to get this printer to print a page.

I hope a severity of "grave" is most appropriate as it simply fails to
run and is hence unusable.

Thanks
Ramakrishnan

Bug#348633: ghc6: effective FTBFS because of a bug in /usr/bin/make

2006-02-27 Thread Jurij Smakov

Hi,

As it appears that upstream is reluctant to consider it a bug in make
(see 346248 for discussion), I started playing with ghc6 build system in
an attempt to come up with a workaround. I was able to build it in under
3.5 hours on a 1.7GHz Pentium IV machine with the attached patch. For some
targets it takes forever for make to parse the dependency graph of a large
list of prerequisites, the patch just remakes these prerequisites one by
one in three bottleneck places. The resulting ghc6 binary appears to
work fine. The complete build log may be found at

http://www.wooyd.org/debian/ghc6/

Removable drives are still seen anyway, as you can see for your CD
drive.

That's pretty stupid. You shouldn't give anything access to the "disk"
group.

What do you mean? sda6 appears in this case?

What is sda6 exactly? Is it a removable drive? If it is a removable
drive, this is an issue in the kernel or udev. If it isn't, why are you
making it user-mountable?

By the way, what is your udev version?

Bug#347140: marked as done (lxdoom: FTBFS: build-depends on removed xlibs-dev)

Package: lxdoom
Version: 1.4.4-9.2
Severity: serious

Hello,

This is a serious bug filed against your package because it
build-depends on xlibs-dev, which as announced in [1] a while ago, is
no longer available in sid. This makes your package fail to build from
  source.

[1] http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2005/11/msg00022.html

To fix this bug, you need to update your build-dependencies and
substitute xlibs-dev for the list of individual X development
libraries that your package needs to be built. You can find detailed
information about how to do that in the DependsXlibsDev wiki page [2].

[2] http://wiki.debian.org/DependsXlibsDev

As indicated by the Release Team [3], the full transition from XFree86
to Xorg is a release blocker for Etch, which means that Etch will not
be released until this bug is fixed (or your package removed from
testing). So, please, try to fix in a timely manner.

[3] http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2005/10/msg4.html

The number of affected packages by the xlibs-dev transition is huge,
so if you feel like helping with patches or uploads, feel free to
follow the instructions contained in the wiki page above. A list of
affected packages can be found here [4].

[4] http://people.debian.org/~adeodato/release-usertag/transition-xlibs-dev

Finally, if there's a strong reason for which your package should not
be NMUed, please note so in this bug report. Prospective NMUers will
read your reasoning, and will decide if it's strong enough to delay
  their upload.

  Thanks for your collaboration!

When building 'lxdoom' with gcc-3.4 I get the following error:

g_game.c: In function `G_Ticker':
g_game.c:875: error: label at end of compound statement
g_game.c: In function `G_DoPlayDemo':
g_game.c:2119: warning: assignment discards qualifiers from pointer target type
make[3]: *** [g_game.o] Error 1

With the attached patch 'lxdoom' can be compiled using gcc-3.4.

You could be right. I was going on second-hand evidence, and it
may very well be that the open source drivers that were being ported
were really linux drivers for other ralink hardware.

Note that we have a more general problem here -- we should not
have to find the answer to an open-ended question to determine
the suitability of a package for main.

If a package requires something else to be installed before it can be
used, we shouldn't have to figure out whether or not there exists a
suitable free version of that other software -- if it's not in main, we know
that this other software hasn't been packaged, and that should be
sufficient to push package which requires it be installed into contrib.

I cannot reproduce this with either sid_d-i 20060224 or 20060225, so there
must be something in your local situation that causes this.

Please run the installation at medium priority and tell at which menu step
the preseeding happens.
When you've done that, try to find the script that is run and add a
'set -x' to get a log of what it actually does.

What has that to do with anything ? The question was "should yaird not be made
the default" and i answered that this is probably not a good idea because the
DD maintainer (you) doesn't seem able to fix bugs without consulting his
upstream and that said upstream is MIA.

Bug#354595: libmdbodbc: typo in versioned conflict

2006-02-27 Thread Aaron M. Ucko
Package: libmdbodbc
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

libmdbodbc's Conflicts: and Replaces: headers specify

libmdbtools (< 0.5.99.0.6pre1.0.20051109-2)

with a single <, which apt interprets as <= rather than <<.
Ironically, an upload with no changes whatsoever should work around
the problem, but you might as well fix the typo for sanity's sake.

Thanks.

Both relate to ide-generic.

Difference between yaird and initramfs-tools in regards to this issue
is that yaird has builtin probing while initramfs-tools rely on udev
for extracting kernels own logic and/or implement workarounds.

So the maintainer of initramfs-tools is right in not having any hanging
bugreports about ide-generic (they should be pushed either to udev or
linux-2.6) while yaird do not have such luxury.

If I remember correctly then the maintainer of udev has been quite
sceptical about implementing workarounds for the ide-generic problem
(rather than considering it a kernel bug) too.

I am still interested in opinions from _other_ members of the kernel
team: Is it decided to decided to ditch yaird due to my irresponsible
or non-cooperative behaviour (which I claim is related to the
problematic ide-generic issue), or do you have different opinions on
how ramdisk generators should be picked for the official kernels?

Yes, I am perfectly aware that not all is in favor of yaird, but the
reasoning behind choosing one over the other - or what is considered
fair ground for fair a competition between them.

Please tell us since when you have not heard about your upstream, and what
fixes you have down to yaird since then, and when do you expect to be looking
at merged bug :

  #343427: linux-image-2.6.14-2-powerpc: Installation fails
#345067: [powerpc] ide-generic is not built on powerpc, yaird tries to
  include it and fails

Open respectively since 74 and 60 days now. I even proposed you to go over the
patch and solve it in erkelenz, but you where more interested in polimicking
than fixing this bug, what else can i say ...

Bug#354582: Nautilus does not list fstab devices in computer:///

2006-02-27 Thread Rubén Rodríguez Pérez
Package: libgnomevfs2-common
Version: 2.12.2-6
Severity: grave

When hald is running, you cannot see fstab devices in
computer:/// (you cannot see the icons in the desktop or nautilus, or
list the devices with gnomevfs-ls), but you can see, mount and
umount hotplug devices. If you kill hald, then you can see fstab
devices, but not the hotplug ones.

Downgrading the package (forced, downgrading _only_ this package) to
2.10 fixes the problem, so it is not a misconfiguraion in hald or gconf.

Examples:

Runing hald
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/tmp# gnomevfs-ls computer:///
Filesystem.desktop (Regular, application/x-desktop)
size 0 mode 0444
Network.desktop (Regular, application/x-desktop)size 0
mode 0444
Disquetera.drive(Regular, application/x-desktop)
size 0 mode 0444
Unidad%20CD-RW%2FDVD%C2%B1R.drive (Regular,
application/x-desktop)size 0 mode 0444
--

Not running hald
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/tmp# gnomevfs-ls computer:///
Filesystem.desktop (Regular, application/x-desktop)
size 0 mode 0444
Network.desktop (Regular, application/x-desktop)size 0

sda6.drive (Regular, application/x-desktop)size 0
mode 0444
hdc.volume (Regular, application/x-desktop)size 0
mode 0444
--

It don't matter if the devices are mounted or not, and I've tried to add
hal to group disks. Hal-device-manager info is ok. Restarting dbus
(consecuently restarting hald) in a started gnome session results in
devices showing up in nautilus and desktop.

my fstab looks like this:

/dev/sda6 /mnt/sda6 ext3 noauto,user 0 0
don't matter if I change the opts to auto or remove the user flag

...says a single member of the kernel team.

I would appreciate comments from other members of the kernel team on
this issue.

The quality of the maintainers of both tool also play an important role in
which tool to chose as standard, and we have a pretty good feedback from both
the initramfs-tools maintainer and upstream, while for yaird, the upstream
maintainer seems to be MIA since around late december, and the debian
maintainer seems to be unable to fix a bug or even looking at patches without
getting feedback from the upstream maintainer, which makes yaird unsuitable to
be the default.

Well, I couldn't find any trace of "1" ever happening. If it ever
happened, then it's ok. But as far as I know, the Ralink company went
directly to 2 (porting there non-free windows driver to linux, and
then making it free). Can you provide any evidence that 1 ever
happened?

I'd be glad to learn that this is not so, since I _would_ like to have
ndiswrapper in main. It's just that I felt the example was bugged.

Bug#354575: csmash: Package uninstallable.

2006-02-27 Thread Christian Marillat
Package: csmash
Version: 0.6.6-6
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Hi,

This package depends on csmash-data (= 0.6.6-6+b1) who doesn't exist :

$ LANG=C sudo apt-get install csmash
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:

Bug#354571: RM: gngeo -- RoAM; license problems

2006-02-27 Thread Marc Brockschmidt
Package: gngeo,ftp.debian.org
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 2.2

Package is non-free, not fit for contrib:

* src/unzip.{c,h} has different copyright owners and licenses
* src/neocrypt.c is taken from MAME. And thus ... non-free. Yay!
* src/effect/2xsaimmx.asm: "Non-Commercial use of this software is allowed"
* src/cyclone/Cyclone.h: "Cyclone 68000 is free for non-commercial use."
* src/mamez80/z80.c: "This source code is released as freeware for
non-commercial purposes."

As the maintainer didn't react on my package check, I'm filing this bug
to avoid legal problems. Until debian/copyright is fixed, this package
should be kept out of Debian non-free, too.

2006-02-27 Thread Tom Parker
Package: xorg
Version: 1:7.0.0
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

xorg relies on the libgl1-mesa package, which I can't find a copy of
anywhere in the Debian archives (I've also checked incoming and the new
packages list on ftp-master.debian.org). There is a copy available in
the Ubuntu archives for dapper, but installing this would probably be a bad
idea

This is strange because the erase stty setting matched the BackSpace

Bug#331068: Are you gonna leave pngcrush broken forever?

2006-02-27 Thread Bug Filler
Package: pngcrush
Version: 1.5.10-2
Followup-For: Bug #331068

This is crap. How long till the package be fixed/patched in Debian? I
don't care how broken or messed up the upstream author are, why are you
leaving Debian user with known broken package for so long?

I see plenty of Debian packages have private patches.

Bug#354546: texinfo: 'apt-get build-dep make' fails with 'update-fmtutil: cannot read /etc/texmf/fmt.d/00tex.cnf'

2006-02-27 Thread Andreas Jochens
Package: texinfo
Version: 4.8-5
Severity: serious

Hello,

I just tried to build the 'make' package in a clean unstable chroot
environment, but the 'apt-get build-dep make' command failed with
the following error:

Setting up texinfo (4.8-5) ...
update-fmtutil: cannot read /etc/texmf/fmt.d/00tex.cnf
dpkg: error processing texinfo (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

I can reproduce the same error by trying to install
texinfo and tetex-bin together in a clean unstable chroot:

# apt-get install texinfo tetex-bin
[...]
Selecting previously deselected package tetex-bin.
Unpacking tetex-bin (from .../tetex-bin_3.0-14_amd64.deb) ...
Unpacking texinfo (from .../texinfo_4.8-5_amd64.deb) ...
Setting up libexpat1 (1.95.8-3) ...
[...]
Setting up texinfo (4.8-5) ...
update-fmtutil: cannot read /etc/texmf/fmt.d/00tex.cnf
dpkg: error processing texinfo (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

Installing just 'texinfo' alone, i.e. not together with 'tetex-bin'
works fine.

Regards
Andreas Jochens

Ok, so doing it the numeric way in this case also makes sense.

This is most probably not a bug but a misconfiguration of your terminal
settings.

Best wishes

Bug#347796: Patch from bugzilla works for me

2006-02-27 Thread Damyan Ivanov
Hi,

I just wanted to say that the patch, attached to the bugzilla bug seems to
solve the crash. I've rebuilt the package with just putting the patch in
debian/patches and gnome-settings-daemon no more crashes.

I thought you may need a headsup about this, since 2.12.3 didn't contain the
patch and the bug is RC...

Package: libsdl1.2-dev

Severity: serious

The current version of libsdl1.2-dev depends on libglu1-xorg-dev, even
though libsdl1.2 doesn't have any build-dependencies on GL-related
packages. There is now a libsdl1.2-dev package on sparc with this
build-dependency, even though libglu1-xorg-dev has never been built
there! I realize the NMUer was merely doing a mechanical replacement of
the obsolete package name with the new one, but both forms of this
dependency are garbage and should not have been included in the first
place.

This bug will no longer be of severity: serious once xorg is available
all architectures, but in the meantime this bug has a real impact on the
ability to rebuild other SDL-using packages for the C++ transition and
it should be fixed.
