Bug#370701: vncserver: Xvnc (started from inetd for XCMP support) fails after recent dist-upgrade
Package: vncserver Version: 3.3.7-12 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable Our development system runs debian testing; the developers normally log on using VNC. xinetd is set up with server vnc services (for various geometries); they run Xvnc (Xrealvnc) with the -query option so each connection gets its own gdm login). However, since a (partial) dist-upgrade earlier today, this has ceased to function - the connection is terminated immediately. This happened _before_ doing the full xorg upgrade (the font server upgrade came in as a dependency of another package, and I'm guessing it's at fault). Completing the full dist-upgrade did not resolve the problem. I did note that tightvncserver was removed during the upgrade, but since we don't use that, I didn't see it as a problem - if I had know that ALL vnc servers would break, I would not have upgraded (and again, the vnc breakage happened even before the tightvncserver removal was required by dist-upgrade). What can I do to get VNC access working again? Or alternatively, what steps can I take to dist-downgrade to a _working_ setup? We can (mostly) manage using plain old ssh connections, but it does have an impact on productivity. ++ Now I'll answer myself, because I found a solution while preparing this report. The cause of the problem is that Xvnc can't find some core things (rgb.txt and the 'fixed' font). These were relocated as part of the X11R7 upgrade. It's possible it can no longer talk to the new font server either (otherwise the relocations wouldn't matter to it because the font server would handle them). vncserver/vnc4server work around this by passing -co and -fp options to the Xnvcs they spawn. So the solution is to do the same in /etc/inetd.conf (or /etc/xinetd.d/myvncservice). Instead of /usr/bin/Xvnc -inetd -once -query my-x-host -geometry 1234x666 -depth 24 the command line needs to be (on one line) /usr/bin/Xvnc -co /etc/X11/rgb -fp unix/:7100,all other font paths separated by commas \ -inetd -once -query my-x-host -geometry 1234x666 -depth 24 (is there a cleaner way to do this, e.g. by putting those options in some config file Xvnc reads?) README.debian should probably be adjusted accordingly (the instructions there no longer result in a working setup). -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.4.27-2-686-smp Locale: LANG=en_US, LC_CTYPE=en_US (charmap=ISO-8859-1) Versions of packages vncserver depends on: ii dpkg 1.13.19 package maintenance system for Deb ii libc62.3.6-7 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libgcc1 1:4.1.0-4 GCC support library ii libice6 6.9.0.dfsg.1-6 Inter-Client Exchange library ii libsm6 1:1.0.0-4 X11 Session Management library ii libstdc++6 4.1.0-4 The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii libx11-6 2:1.0.0-6 X11 client-side library ii libxext6 1:1.0.0-4 X11 miscellaneous extension librar ii perl 5.8.8-4 Larry Wall's Practical Extraction ii vnc-common 3.3.7-12Virtual network computing server s ii vnc4-common [vnc-common] 4.1.1+X4.3.0-10 Virtual network computing server s ii x11-common 1:7.0.20X Window System (X.Org) infrastruc ii xbase-clients1:7.0.1-2 miscellaneous X clients ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3-11 compression library - runtime Versions of packages vncserver recommends: ii xfonts-base 1:1.0.0-3 standard fonts for X -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#365950: ntp-simple must be configured before ntp-server
On Tue, Jun 06, 2006 at 11:59:39AM +0200, Peter Eisentraut wrote: Does anyone want to put in a vote on which way to break the dependency loop? Basically, there are two ways to go about it: ntp-server Depends ntp-simple | ntp-refclock ntp-simple Recommends ntp-server ntp-refclock Recommends ntp-server Two, ntp-server Recommends ntp-simple | ntp-refclock ntp-simple Depends ntp-server ntp-refclock Depends ntp-refclock The first treats ntp-server as the well-known public package to install and the other two as implementation variants. This is a bit like the kaffe package, say. The second treats ntp-server as a sort of ntp-common package that gets pulled in by either package you install. The first seems to be a bit more user-friendly, because apt-get install ntp-server will do something reasonable. It also seems to have been the original intent, seeing that the user management is in the ntp-simple and ntp-refclock packages, which would seem to indicate that they were intended to be configured first. Note that the behavior that triggered this bug report already implies a preferred solution: with the current package set, there is one package that has to be configured before the other due to the user creation. If in doubt, that's the dependency I would suggest respecting. -- Steve Langasek Give me a lever long enough and a Free OS Debian Developer to set it on, and I can move the world. Bug#370764: xorg: The paths are all fucked up
Package: xorg Version: 1:7.0.20 Severity: critical Justification: breaks the whole system Thank you very much for moving everything from under /usr/X11R6 to the mess known as the /usr hierarchy. Now nothing works. After spending a lot of time to even manage to get X install after upgrade _removed_ all of X and x11-common refused to install at all (needed a kludge that looped creating symlinks from /usr/lib and /usr/include to /usr/X11R6 for it to not die in install scripts -- where's the option to just fucking unpack it and mark installed?), X now crashed (didn't reboot it afterwards, because I know this was coming). And now I can't boot it, because I can't install the nvidia driver. And all the other configs are fucked up too, because things are all over the place. You don't just go removing such an _established_ directory as /usr/X11R6 that all programs expect, and putting everything in a single basket. That's, indeed, the completely wrong direction to take. Application directories (/usr/pkg/package-version/ or maybe even /debian-testing/packag-version/) are the way to go, not taking this unix all in one basket mess even further. Now I hear everyone complaining you shouldn't be running testing if you're not willing to go through all the trouble. Yeah, maybe I'll have to switch GoboLinux, for at least they're attempting at cleaning up things with app.dirs instead of the FHS idiocy (/media sucks too BTW; removable media should reside directly under root for comfortable names -- and symlinks aren't of much help there generally), although They Have Been Corrupted By The Marketdroid Conventiong Of Very Long and Cumbersome Names. Or maybe I should switch to Windows, for Linux keeps getting worse all the time, and on Windows at least there Firefox has a semi-usable file dialog, and I can could use a free browser. Wait... Opera also is not an option anymore as I have no functioning X. Thank you very much. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.14 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=fi_FI.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages xorg depends on: ii aterm [x-terminal-emulator] 1.0.0-2Afterstep XVT - a VT102 emulator f ii eterm [x-terminal-emulator] 0.9.3-1Enlightened Terminal Emulator ii libgl1-mesa-dri 6.4.1-0.4 A free implementation of the OpenG ii libgl1-mesa-glx [libgl1-mesa- 6.4.1-0.4 A free implementation of the OpenG ii libglu1-mesa 6.4.1-0.4 The OpenGL utility library (GLU) ii mlterm [x-terminal-emulator] 2.9.2-5+b1 MultiLingual TERMinal ii rxvt [x-terminal-emulator]1:2.6.4-10 VT102 terminal emulator for the X ii rxvt-unicode [x-terminal-emul 7.7-4 RXVT-like terminal emulator with U ii xbase-clients 1:7.0.1-2 miscellaneous X clients ii xfonts-100dpi 1:1.0.0-2 100 dpi fonts for X ii xfonts-75dpi 1:1.0.0-2 100 dpi fonts for X ii xfonts-base 1:1.0.0-3 standard fonts for X ii xfonts-scalable 1:1.0.0-4 scalable fonts for X ii xkb-data 0.8-5 X Keyboard Extension (XKB) configu ii xserver-xorg 1:7.0.20 the X.Org X server ii xterm [x-terminal-emulator] 210-3 X terminal emulator ii xutils1:7.0.0-3 X Window System utility programs xorg recommends no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#370746: libgmp-ocaml: uninstallable, depends on unavailable ocaml-nox-3.09.1

Maybe a better dependency could be found, however. BinNMUs were scheduled for this package, but due to its use of dh_movefiles with hard-coded ocaml 3.09.1 paths, these have failed. A sourceful upload is needed -- hopefully one that gets away from needing to hard-code the ocaml version number in its paths. -- Steve Langasek Give me a lever long enough and a Free OS Debian Developer to set it on, and I can move the world. Bug#370785: dokuwiki: Privilege Escalation Problem in DokuWiki
Package: dokuwiki Version: 0.0.20060309-3 Severity: critical Another security flaw that I was informed about through freshmeat. Cheers, -Hilko Start of forwarded message From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [fmII] Privilege Escalation Problem in DokuWiki Message-Id: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Tue, 6 Jun 2006 11:27:20 -0700 (PDT) This is an email sent to you by the owners of the freshmeat.net project record for DokuWiki. All URLs and other useful information can be found at http://freshmeat.net/projects/dokuwiki/ | Subscriber message |_ Sent by: Andreas Gohr http://freshmeat.net/~agohr/ Hello again! Just two days after the last security problem another flaw was discovered. Luckily not as bad as the last one. Andreas Åkre Solberg discovered a security flaw which allows registered users to view page content they usually have no access to. The problem is in the way how a successful user profile change is handled. This affects only installs which have Access Control Lists enabled (off by default) and restricted the READ permission for certain pages even for logged in users. Non-authenticated users can not exploit this bug. The package available at http://www.splitbrain.org/go/dokuwiki was updated again to reflect the change but fixing it manually is simple, too. Info on how to do this is available at http://bugs.splitbrain.org/?do=detailsid=825 Andi PS: I apologize for the trouble. Unfortunately the bigger and complex a software gets the more likely security flaws are. I try hard to avoid common mistakes but sometimes a bug slips through. If you are an experienced PHP developer I encourage you to have a look at the code (preferably the devel code) your self to help spotting such weaknesses - the more people check, the better it gets. __| End of message |___ End of forwarded message -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) ---BeginMessage--- Package: xorg Version: 1:7.0.20 Severity: critical Justification: breaks the whole system Thank you very much for moving everything from under /usr/X11R6 to the mess known as the /usr hierarchy. Wait... Bug#351693: guile on ia64
On Mon, Jun 05, 2006 at 04:47:44PM -0700, Thomas Bushnell BSG wrote: The correct response, I believe, is for Debian guile-1.6 to declare in the architecture spec that ia64 is not supported. This is also a release engineering issue, because it means that packages which use guile (say, like gnucash) would need to be able to slide into testing despite not being functional on ia64. It seems like it would be incorrect to declare in gnucash that ia64 is not supported, because there is no gnucash-specific problem. Still, I don't understand all the release engineering issues. Steve, can you offer some suggestions? Assume, for the moment, that it will not be possible to make guile work on ia64. What then? If guile-1.6 declares, with the consent of the ia64 porters, that ia64 is not supported (either by explicitly excluding it from the architecture list or by adding a test suite that fails at build-time), then it would be appropriate to ask the ftp team to drop the ia64 binaries of gnucash from unstable. The procedure for doing this is to file a bug report against ftp.debian.org. Bug#370782: cacti no poller output
This one time, at band camp, Paul van der Holst said: I am doing the old fashion way, because reportbug is broken (see other bug report =]) I've installed cacti to my server, using apt-get install cacti all depencies were installed with it. Bug#370311: runs paperconf in preconfig when it's not available yet
tag 370311 patch thanks Martin Michlmayr [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: You run paperconf before it's available, which apprently means that no /etc/papersize file gets created, so paperconf later fails. [...] Preconfiguring packages ... /tmp/libpaper1.config.312981: line 19: paperconf: command not found Although this is a bug, it isn't fatal. The problem is that, due to a circular dependency between libpaper1 and libpaper-utils, the latter gets configured before the former's postinst has had a chance to create /etc/papersize: [...] Setting up libpaper-utils (1.1.18) ... Setting up r-base-core (2.3.1-1) ... paperconf: cannot get paper size from /etc/papersize: No such file or directory [...] Setting up libpaper1 (1.1.18) ... Creating config file /etc/papersize with new version The best way to ensure a predictable order of configuration is to downgrade libpaper1's dependency on libpaper-utils to a Recommends. If we do that, neither libpaper1's config script nor its postinst can rely on the paperconf utility. But, as shown above, the config script can't rely on paperconf as it is; during preconfiguration, it must be entirely self-reliant. Since paper sizes are pretty static, I think the cleanest approach is to embed them in the config script itself. That's what the attached patch does automatically from debian/rules, along with a couple of other changes: * Use `set -e' to make it less likely errors go undetected. (Note that the above error happened on the left hand side of `|', which can't really be detected in the Bourne shell -- I simply avoided pipes.) * Don't override preseeded values. The debconf database may already contain answers preseeded by the installer; the patch checks for this with db_get libpaper/defaultpaper [ -n $RET ] Unfortunately, there is no way to tell whether db_get returned a user-specified/preseeded value (which we should leave alone) or the value of the Default field (which we might want to override based on the locale). The seen flag is not a reliable indicator as it may be preseeded to false if the intention is to prompt the user with an other-than-usual default. I dealt with this by removing the Default field from the template, and setting a default in the config script whether or not a locale is present. (Sorry, this is hopelessly convoluted. Don't hesitate to ask for clarification.) Bug#328200: ntp licensing status: looking pretty good
Andres Salomon [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: ntp 4.2.1rc1 was released in March (see http://lists.ntp.isc.org/pipermail/announce/2006-March/12.html). Looking through that, we see that: a lot of stuff has been fixed. :-) Good to hear. The licensing from Frank Kardel fixes nearly everything we actually *use*. Summary of current status when the new upstream is packaged: (1) The following files in the upstream source, unused, should most likely be removed from the Debian source tarball. -- arlib/* (unused, non-distributable license) -- html/build/hints/solaris-dosynctodr.html (useless on Linux, pilfered from webpage, no license) (2) The following files still have license problems (quoting Andres Salomon) libntp/adjtime.c is copyrighted by many people. This file is actually pretty problematic; the HPUX adjtime implementation is copyrighted Tai Jin (and is ok, but should be mentioned in the copyright file), but the QNX adjtime implementation is copyright Chris Burghart, and has no license (and is therefore non-distributable). (Quoting Bdale Garbee) The file include/global.h has an RSA copyright assertion with all rights reserved and no other grant. However, the files that include it clearly came from the rsaref2.0 package, which has a BSD-like license with advertising clause. I believe this header file also was part of that package and therefore covered by the same RSA license terms. Therefore, I suggest the copyright and license terms from libntp/md5c.c should be added to debian/copyright to cover all inclusions from rsaref2.0. (3) The following files which were not previously identified have license problems: include/rsa_md5.h has an obnoxious advertising clause of an extra-obnoxious variety: License to copy and use this software is granted provided that it is identified as the RSA Data Security, Inc. MD5 Message-Digest Algorithm in all material mentioning or referencing this software or this function. License is also granted to make and use derivative works provided that such works are identified as derived from the RSA Data Security, Inc. MD5 Message-Digest Algorithm in all material mentioning or referencing the derived work. This is really over the top. All material mentioning or referencing? Debian's not doing this. Surely this can be replaced with a workalike header file, though? Bare copyright notices, without licenses, other than those of David Mills, show up in the following files (all of which appear to be irrelevant to Linux and Debian): include/timepps-SCO.h include/timepps-Solaris.h include/timepps-SunOS.h kernel/tty_chu_STREAMS.c (I think this Sun/Solaris only) ports/winnt/libntp/messages.mc ports/winnt/include/hopf_PCI_io.h There are bare copyright notices without licenses in the following files which appear relevant to Debian: libparse/clk_wharton.c ntpd/refclock_neoclock4x.c scripts/ntpver.in -- trivial file scripts/monitoring/lr.pl scripts/monitoring/ntp.pl scripts/monitoring/ntploopstat scripts/monitoring/ntploopwatch scripts/monitoring/ntptrap The stuff in scripts is copyright either Rainer Pruy, Friedrich-Alexander Universitaet Erlangen-Nuernberg or Ulrich Windl or both, with one bit copyright Frank Kardel The files libparse/clk_wharton.c and ntpd/refclock_neoclock4x.c are copyright Philippe De Muyter [EMAIL PROTECTED], who included a warranty disclaimer, but no license. Hopefully the authors of these can be found and will be happy to license the files. That's it; every other file has been mentioned previously by either Bdale or Andres. (4) There are some substantial updates needed to debian/copyright. I'd be happy to do this once (1), (2), and (3) are dealt with. -- Nathanael Nerode [EMAIL PROTECTED] Bush admitted to violating FISA and said he was proud of it.
