Bug#402010: How to deal with #402010?
Cajus Pollmeier, 2008-04-04 09:18:37 +0200 : Hi, my position to this bug is written down in the bugtracker and I don't consider this a bug. Any opinions about what to do with it? It would apply to virtually any kind of web application accessing some kind of database/ldap passwords somewhere in the filesystem. Depending on the web server, there may be a way around that problem. The following works with Apache, at least, and I guess it can be adapted to other servers as well. The thing is to store the passwords or sensitive info in files that are only readable by root, and have Apache read these files and export the information selectively to some webapps and not others, by wrapping the appropriate directives in VirtualHost (or similar) blocks. Then it's a simple matter (ahem) of passing the info to the webapp, and there are two ways to do that: with SetEnv (not ideal) or with RequestHeader (probably better). Bug#474217: initramfs-tools: /etc/lvm.conf needed in initrd
Package: initramfs-tools Version: 0.85h Severity: serious X-Debbugs-CC: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi, while creating an initrd the /etc/lvm.conf is not copied into the initrd, this can result in a pretty ugly behaviours as the initrd will activate all VG/LV it can find. For example if you boot from SAN all LUNs will show up in the initrd, including those which may be part of a cluster and should not be activated (yet), or those which are supposed to be passed into a guest OS of your favourite virtualization solution. The listed reasons are just a few why you probably don't want to activate all LVs, and why you usually configure lvm in lvm.conf - ignoring this file can result in a severe loss of data. Of course, copying the file only makes sense if it was modified. Best regards, Bernd -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Package: icedove Version: 2.0.0.9-3 Followup-For: Bug #461981 Hi, On a fresh install, icedove does not work: - If it is ran for the first time, the import window appears, but there is no response from any button. Bug#426224: The fix for SATA disk shutdown introduced a new bug for some IDE hard disks
Hi debian bug 426224 and Werner Fink. Werner, I'm CCing you because, this bug comes from the patch you've done for sysvinit, which has been used to fix the debian bug http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=426224 First I confirm that sysvinit/2.86.ds1-40 fixes the shutdown issue of my SATA hard disks. Nevertheless since sysvinit/2.86.ds1-40, I have some error messages on the IDE hard disk hda when the computer is shut down. The error messages are: hda: drive_cmd: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } hda: drive_cmd: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError } failed opcode was 0xe7 The line in the source code which triggers this error is this one: ioctl(fd, HDIO_DRIVE_CMD, flush2); When I remove it to have a behavior closer with the one in sysvinit/2.86.ds1-38, the error does not occur any more. This is probably because this Flush Cache command is not supported by my hard disk model; another IDE hard disk I tried did not have this issue. Here is the information from one of my hda hard disks having this error: # hdparm -I /dev/hda /dev/hda: ATA device, with non-removable media Model Number: TRANSCEND Serial Number: 200704260935K0004379 Firmware Revision: 2.0 Standards: Likely used: 2 Configuration: Logical max current cylinders 993 993 heads 16 16 sectors/track 63 63 -- bytes/track: 33264 bytes/sector: 528 CHS current addressable sectors:1000944 LBAuser addressable sectors:1000944 device size with M = 1024*1024: 488 MBytes device size with M = 1000*1000: 512 MBytes Capabilities: LBA, IORDY(can be disabled) Buffer size: 2.0kB bytes avail on r/w long: 4 Standby timer values: spec'd by Vendor R/W multiple sector transfer: Max = 1 Current = 0 DMA: not supported PIO: pio0 pio1 pio2 pio3 pio4 Cycle time: no flow control=120ns IORDY flow control=120ns Tell me if you need more information. Bug#457177: [Yaird-devel] Bug#457177: Bug#457177: yaird is necessary for alpha yet

Umm, not so good Debian developer, but I'll submit a bug report as maximilian advised, perhaps in the next week. The Alpha machine is in a office of a univ. so I will not test it in this week end. Sorry for that. On Wed, 2 Apr 2008 10:46:45 +0200, maximilian attems wrote: sure but i was reffering to the initramfs-tools failure, who is the default tool and known to generaly work on alpha. I maintain two alpha machines but they are very sensitive and I experienced boot failure many times with them. In fact, one fails to boot with kernel greater than 2.6.12 and so it is running with 2.6.12-1-alpha-generic even now. The other, which I reffered to in this report, booted successfully until 2.6.24-1-alpha-generic came and there was time when it failed to boot with kernels of versions smaller than 2.6.8 So I think to have two options for generating initrd.img is good for users. Package: raccess4vbox3 Version: 0.2.8.1 Severity: serious User: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Usertags: proposed-removal Dear Maintainer, While reviewing some packages, your package came up as a possible candidate for removal from Debian, because: * Last maintainer upload in 2003. * Out of date. * Low popcon. ~18 installs. * Slow/inactive upstream. * Blocking removal of metamail. Bug#473973: [pkg-boost-devel] Bug#473973: libboost-python-dev: rdeps?fails?to built - python packaging seems weird
On Wed, Apr 02, 2008 at 10:51:35PM +0200, Sune Vuorela wrote: I think you *must* depend on at least one python -dev thingie. Do you need to manually change stuff to support a new python version ? But can't python-dev | python2.4-dev | python2.5-dev be appropriate ? Yes, I think you are right. Upload -11 is being prepared with libboost-python-dev depending on python-dev. On a side note not related to this at all, I am a bit curious. How is it expected to be handled when support for python-2.4 will be dropped? Just hope that it matches a boost soname change? If you're asking what happens when Debian drops support for Python 2.4, then I think the answer is that all packages that build-depend on Python (including Boost) get rebuilt. If you arrange things properly according to Debian's Python Policy, this can be done with a binary NMU. Otherwise it can require some packaging changes. -Steve signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Version 4.3 has not been released yet but I'm building with a snapshot in order to find errors and give people an advance warning. In GCC 4.3, the C++ header dependencies have been cleaned up. The advantage of this is that programs will compile faster. The downside is that you actually need to directly #include everything you use (but you really should do this anyway, otherwise your program won't work with any compiler other than GCC). There's some more information about this at http://www.cyrius.com/journal/2007/05/10#gcc-4.3-include You can reproduce this problem with gcc-snapshot from unstable. Note that Red Hat, Novell and Ubuntu have done some work getting packages to build with GCC 4.3 so there might be patches floating around somewhere. I suggest you talk to your upstream. However, as can be seen from buildd, it doesn't build on powerpc. http://buildd.debian.org/fetch.cgi?pkg=csound;ver=1%3A5.08.0.dfsg2-1;arch=p owerpc;stamp=1207248874 I'm not sure why this occurs, but it can be fixed with the following patch. Thanks for the patch. Indeed it's strange: it should fail on all archs, not just powerpc (it appears to fail on other archs too). Maybe the compiler in ppc is a different version? Anyways, I applied it, so should be fixed in next upload. -- Felipe Sateler signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.

Bug#471865: Hello, is anything happening with this bug?
I have yet to reproduce it either in testing with 9.3.4 or in my production world with either 9.4.2 or 9.5.0~b2. I rather expect that it's already fixed in 9.4.2, but can't say for sure without some more reliable reproducer... Bug#426224: [Pkg-sysvinit-devel] Bug#426224: The fix for SATA disk shutdown introduced a new bug for some IDE hard disks
On Fri, 04 Apr 2008, Hubert Verstraete wrote: This is probably because this Flush Cache command is not supported by my hard disk model; another IDE hard disk I tried did not have this issue. We can't affort to add a blacklist to this, I think. It will not be effectively maintained. But the kernel already HAS one, since it needs to be able to flush disks. Time to get an IOCTL to *flush* disks and use THAT instead of ever sending any ATA commands? We really, really should not be sending ANY ATA taskfiles to get the functionality needed for halt/reboot in this day and age, dammit :-) If the whole ridiculous crap with the disk shutdown issues in the kernel have teached us something, it is THAT. So let's rip out any taskfile commands from our infrastructure, and use only *generic function* IOCTLs. If any are missing, let's work to add them. There is no other way to fix all these issues for good. It is the kernel who has to know how to sync or stop disks, not userspace. -- One disk to rule them all, One disk to find them. Bug#473889: Bug 473889 about grub-probe merged with 473209
Hi, I did a merge with 473209 which has the same error as I stumbled over, and more information about the real problem (/boot/grub/devices.map). Bastian, it breaks as-in it quits the configuration processing, and forces me to run a reconfiguration to finish the apt-get install. Btw, I did a quick touch /dev/sda. Currently I have a machine in sid not updated with the latest packages, when I will have time to upgrade, I will upgrade grub and the linux-image separately. Bug#474315: Should this package be removed?
Package: klic Version: 3.003-gm1-4.1 Severity: serious User: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Usertags: proposed-removal Hi, looking at klic's history, it has had a history of NMUs, and repeated fixes for various random breakages of its build system. The upstream version dates back from 2001. Popcon reports 30 users. Currently outstanding is a fix for breakage with dash as /bin/sh. I'd suggest we remove klic from the archive instead.
