Bug#497623: linux-image-2.6.26: randomly crashes without traces

2008-09-03 Thread Jan Hauke Rahm
Package: linux-image-2.6.26-1-686
Version: 2.6.26-3
Severity: grave
File: linux-image-2.6.26
Justification: renders package unusable

Dear maintainers,

I got really serious situations several times since using 2.6.26:
somehow my system just crashes. It happens while browsing (no flash in
use at that moment) or just editing OOo documents. The screen turns sort
of black and, well, that's it... no shortcuts working, even magic keys
don't do anything. A cold reset is needed. :(
Unfortunately logs don't seem to get the crash, either. Syslog ended
last time with --MARK-- and so did /var/log/messages.
Below is the standard information collected by reportbug. If you want me
to do anything to help debugging whatever happens, just tell me.

Cheers,
Hauke

 One of the diffs between glib2.0-2.16.4-2 and glib2.0-2.16.5-1 is
 a null-pointer check in open_read_async_thread that catches this.
 With the new glib, midori seems to work[...]

Bug#497623: linux-image-2.6.26: randomly crashes without traces

2008-09-03 Thread Jan Hauke Rahm
Some additional info to this bug report:

I just found #479709 which seems to be very similar, although...
Users in #479709 found some relation to chrony which is not installed on
my system. OTOH my system hung twice while booting at setting system
clock which again leads to some clock or time problems...
I don't know that much about kernel stuff but I thought this could help.

Thanks for your time!

Hi

kernel-patch-grsecurity2 is not installable as is depends on
linux-patch-grsecurity2 which in turn conflicts with kernel-patch-grsecurity2.

This blocks its testing migration.

Bug#497583: missing source code / incomplete debian/copyright

2008-09-03 Thread L. Redrejo
El mar, 02-09-2008 a las 22:59 +0200, Andreas Barth escribió:

 Hi,

 the file platforms/unix/src/vm/interp.c starts with:

 /* Automatically generated from Squeak on an Array(9 May 2008 11:24:03 am)
 by VMMaker 3.8b6 [...]

 However, I cannot identify the source file for that file.

This is the source file. Squeak people uses a Squeak image to store
the virtual machine sources, as any other people can use svn o cvs. That
message only means that the text file has been generated that way, but
that file is the only and real source file to be compiled.

  Also,
 debian/copyright doesn't contain any hint how this file is generated.

At debian/copyright you can read:

All other source files below platforms/unix in this distribution that do
not
contain individual copyright and license notices are:

  Copyright (C) 1996-2006 by Ian Piumarta and other authors/contributors
 listed in individual source files.

  All rights reserved.

For all of the above files:

and then a BSD like license is written.

 So I think this packages fails the DFSG, and cannot be part of main in
 it's current version (and fails also the release policy, which makes the
 bug serious).

I hope my informations have cleared it for you. If not, please tell me,
and I will try to explain it better. Squeak is a very different piece of
software from what people is used to see and I do know that its way of
working is not easy to explain and understand.

Regards.

Package: ucarp
Version: 1.5~snap080222-1
Severity: important

PROBLEM:
I have two boxes, at this moment configuration is simple:

1. Six ethernet interfaces. Active: eth0 (tg3) and eth2 (e1000)
2. 802.1q vlans (eth0.2, eth0.9) on eth0 interface
3. Communication between box1 and box2 on interface eth2

After start of daemons on both machines I don't saw any proper
communication - both ucarps entered into MASTER mode. I notice
that after putting interface in promisc mode (caused by tcpdump)
communication happened and one of ucarps enter in BACKUP mode.
After terminating tcpdump communication died and BACKUP change
mode to MASTER.

'netstat -g' shows, that 'VRRP.MCAST.NET' is bounded to incorrect
interface (vlan on eth0 - eth0.2 instead eth2).

lb1(master):/usr/local/sbin# netstat -g

SOLUTION:
After some tests (I test different interfaces in case problems with
hardware or driver) i try to compile latest release of ucarp
(version 1.5). After that problem gone away (communication occurs
and group is bounded to valid interface):

Changes between snapshot in Debian and official release are

into distribution without any troubles.

I'm using actual (from 2008.08.25) Debian testing (lenny) with
kernel 2.6.25-2-686.

So, I can load that text file from within squeak, and do any changes

 previous message, but I grant that this may not be the case elsewhere.)

Please don't drop people from the CC list if you're going to make a
major change like this to the status of a bug. The first time I found
out that this was upgraded to RC severity was when I noticed that my
closure message went to the release critical bugs list.

As previously discussed while I do think this should be fixed for lenny
I really don't think this is a severe enough problem to warrant removing
the package from the distribution; the definition of data loss is being
stretched a bit here (the data is still present and accessible via
interfaces other than ypcat) and the package continues to function well
in the overwhelming majority of use cases.

Like I say, I appreciate that this is something which is very important
in your system and do think this is something that should be fixed for
the next release but given the choice between having this bug and not
shipping at all it seems much more constructive to ship with the bug.

Incidentally, my testing also seemed to indicate that it was quite hard
to get a Debian system to generate UTF-8 data which had this problem - I
ended up using a hex editor to get the encoding that you had, other
encodings worked fine.

Bug is still there. Can't say I was surprised. It looks like all that
was done is porting a few changes from experimental, which is also
broken.

It appears that this bug applies to some people, but not others. Some
fixes work for some, and not others. This means that before you declare
the bug as fixed, you will need to check with many different people. I
would be happy to test any proposed fixes. I have a Lexmark z515
printer.

I purged all of my cups packages. Even the libcups* libraries. And then
rm -rf /etc/cups. Then I installed version 1.3.8-1lenny1 of these
packages. Then I rebooted. The bug is still there, and it is exactly as
I described above, which is mostly how the OP described it.

Hi!

Please, if you deal with a Debian bug which has already been reported

It happens that ranma is my Openmoko FreeRunner, powered by Debian [4].
Since we (the Debian FSO Team [5]) decided to install a very minimal
Debian (cdeboostrap minimal flavour), gcc is not installed by default
(Priority: optional).

As soon as gcc is installed, ecl works like a charm (I tried the hello
world example in the documentation [6]). Problem fixed [7].

FWIW, this is with Openmoko upstream 2.6.24 kernel.

 I've tried it on armv54te and armv4t boxes and ecl installs and runs
 fine, also under gdb. I can only think maybe some kernel difference -
 for example, ecl makes use of threads.

As explained by Detlef [3], this could be a kernel bug. Thus this bug
should be reassigned to the kernel package, but since it could be
already fixed, I'd rather close it.

Detlef, what do you think?

 If it would help to have ssh access to a native Debian armel box, to
 help find the difference, you are welcome - just write me.

You can also play with qemu/qemubuilder as explained at [4]: ECL
installs and works fine with a Debian 2.6.24 kernel.

Thx, bye,
Gismo / Luca

Bug#492141: conflict with libxdb-dev

2008-09-03 Thread Gerfried Fuchs
* Ralf Treinen [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2008-08-25 15:52:40 CEST]:
 In fact /usr/bin/zap is also ibncluded in the package libxdb-dev:

 Date: 2008-08-25
 Architecture: amd64
 Distribution: lenny
 Command: apt-get --assume-yes --allow-unauthenticated install dvb-apps
 libxdb-dev

 These three packages do file-conflict with each other:

dvb-apps
libxdb-dev
libxbase2.0-bin

 While libxbase2.0-bin has a Conflicts with libxdb-dev already, there is
none set in dvb-apps at all, so the quick fix is to add Conflicts for
both to it.

 I noticed that in the svn tree there is for a while already changes for
another bug that should get fixed along the same lines. And it makes me
wonder a bit, the package team on alioth isn't /that/ small that a thing
like this should be lying around for that long. :/

 This is a call to the contributors of the pkg-vdr-dvb team, otherwise I
plan to upload a NMU that will address this RC bug at least, propably
pulling the other changes from the svn too, and other quick-fix bugs
that might be open for the package (haven't taken a too close look yet).

 Thanks in advance for any response, hopefully.

Facter causes Puppet to leave behind defunct processes:

16009 ?Z  0:00  \_ [sh] defunct
16023 ?Z  0:00  \_ [sh] defunct

I've seen this increase to up to a hundred defunct processes after a
week or so. Killing the Puppet process makes the defunct processes
disappear. The latest release of Facter (1.5.1) fixes this by adding a
Process.waitall thread.  The commit is:

Bug#497671: cups: Windows paper size ignored after CUPS update to 1.3.8

2008-09-03 Thread Campbell-Lange Workshop
Package: cups
Version: 1.3.8-1
Severity: grave
Tags: l10n
Justification: renders package unusable

I updated CUPS on my Debian (Lenny 2.6.21-2-686) to version 1.3.8
yesterday.

Ever since, I'm having trouble printing with correct page size on a
shared
Canon iR 3220.

Regardless of what page size is selected on the client, the job prints
according to the page size in the printer settings on the CUPS Admin
website.

So regardless of what I select on my machine, if the default page
size is set to A4, all prints come out A4.

So it seems that the printer will only obey the generic printer settings
configured via the CUPS Admin interface and not the ones passed by the
client.

It is possible that your package builds fine in sid, but you should make sure
that your package also builds fine in lenny before the release.

A list of current common problems and possible solutions is available at
http://wiki.debian.org/qa.debian.org/FTBFS . You're welcome to contribute!

About the archive rebuild: The rebuild was done on about 50 AMD64 nodes
of the Grid'5000 platform, using a clean chroot containing a sid i386
environment. Internet was not accessible from the build systems.

About the archive rebuild: The rebuild was done on about 50 AMD64 nodes
of the Grid'5000 platform, using a clean chroot containing a sid i386
environment. Internet was not accessible from the build systems.

 there, and safe again? (i.e. that text file is the file actually used
 for modifications?)

Yes, these are the needed steps:
- Open a Squeak standard image (as an example you can use the etoys
package in non-free, that image is olpc'ed (thought to teach and learn)
so it's not very confortable to use it to program but you might use it.
- Install inside this image, using the Squeak Package loader the package
VMmaker.
- Start VMMaker and config it telling the path to the sources you want
to modify, for example the sources from the Debian package
- Modify the sources inside Squeak to do any change
- Use VMMaker to regenerate the sources.

If you don't use vmmaker you can do it manually, but it's harder due to
the size of the sources, and the need of manually modifying some of the
code depending on the plugins you're going to compile.

Smalltalkers use the Squeak Image to modify the code, usually the
plugins [1]. Ian Piumarta, the main author of the unix virtual image
port, does it manually using a standard text editor for part of the
code, excepting the plugins. He uses to program them inside the image,
as it's easier to debug them in real time.

A latest note: when modifying the code inside the image instead of using
a standard text editor, the code is modified in Slang (C with
Smalltalk syntax), that's how smalltalkers do it to use the same
Smalltalk class browser. It does not matter if you use a plain text
editor or Squeak to modify the code: at the end of the process VMmaker
makes the translation to plain C. Obviously VMmaker is free and its
sources (in Smalltalk) are available inside the same Squeak image.

Regards.
José L.

[1] In Squeak plugins are functions that're executed by the virtual
machine instead of by the image. That's usually done by perfomance
reasons as all the code inside the image is in Smalltalk, and some
actions very OS related are faster in C (i.e. accesing the filesystem,
keyboard or the sound card)

 During the build, a xulrunner process is started, but never exits. I had
 to kill it manually.

IIRC you already reported this bug a while ago, and neither I or the
standard buildds are able to reproduce it. Would you mind taking a look
at what the process is trying to do/waiting for ?

Bug#497694: libaudio-cd-perl: problematic license

2008-09-03 Thread gregor herrmann
Package: libaudio-cd-perl
Version: 0.05-3
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 2.1

Ansgar Burchardt has discovered that audio-cd contains a problematic
license in the 0.05 release. README and CD.{xs,pm} say:

  Copyright (C) 1999-2002 by Doug MacEachern

  When included as part of the Standard Version of Perl or as
  part of its complete documentation whether printed or
  otherwise, this work may be distributed only under the terms
  of Perl's Artistic License as included in the file COPYING.
  Any distribution of this file or derivatives thereof outside
  of that package requires that special arrangements be made
  with copyright holder.

The second sentence limits distribution of derived works, and it is
probably problematic for the distribution of the module itself.

Cf. also the thread starting at
http://lists.debian.org/debian-perl/2008/09/msg6.html

I file this bug against version 0.05-3 (sarge), probably 0.05-2 (the
first version in Debian) has the same conditions.

And now I'm going to try to contact the upstream author.

Cheers,
gregor

This still works like a charm in my pbuilder, even running twice before and
after another pbuilder update.

So please follow-up and see why the virtual fb x11 server no longer works in
your environment. Maybe something changed at your end? Maybe xvfb changed?

But this is not a bug in the R packages which merely make use of a virtual
x11 server to be built x11-aware.

So I am downgrading and tagging the two bugs you just filed, and I intend to
close them unless I hear from you, or anyone else, which actual evidence.

it's not really easy to do, but it would be possible if absolutely
necessary. I've added this to my TODO list, but probably won't do that
for a while, so this might happen again in the future. Will try to be
careful when the package name rings a bell, though.

Bug#497583: missing source code / incomplete debian/copyright

2008-09-03 Thread Florian Weimer
But if I'm not mistaken, the source code looks like this:

primDigitCompare: secondInteger
  | firstVal secondVal firstInteger |
  self debugCode: [self msg: 'primDigitCompare: secondInteger'].
  firstInteger := self
primitive: 'primDigitCompare'
parameters: #(#Integer )
receiver: #Integer.
  shortcut: aSmallInteger has to be smaller in Magnitude as aLargeInteger
  (interpreterProxy isIntegerObject: firstInteger)
ifTrue: [first
  (interpreterProxy isIntegerObject: secondInteger)
ifTrue: [second
  (firstVal := interpreterProxy integerValueOf: firstInteger)
(secondVal := interpreterProxy integerValueOf: secondInteger)
ifTrue: [^ 1 asOop: SmallIntegerfirst second]
ifFalse: [firstVal  secondVal
ifTrue: [^ -1 asOop: SmallIntegerfirst second]
ifFalse: [^ 0 asOop: SmallIntegerfirst = second]]]
ifFalse: [SECOND
  ^ -1 asOop: SmallIntegerfirst  SECOND]]
ifFalse: [FIRST
  (interpreterProxy isIntegerObject: secondInteger)
ifTrue: [second
  ^ 1 asOop: SmallIntegerFIRST  second]
ifFalse: [SECOND
  ^ self digitCompareLarge: firstInteger with: secondInteger]]

This is compiled into this C code:

EXPORT(sqInt) primDigitCompare(void) {
sqInt firstVal;
sqInt firstInteger;
sqInt secondVal;
sqInt secondInteger;
sqInt _return_value;

interpreterProxy-success(interpreterProxy-isKindOf(interpreterProxy-stackValue(0),
 Integer));
secondInteger = interpreterProxy-stackValue(0);
/* missing DebugCode */;

interpreterProxy-success(interpreterProxy-isKindOf(interpreterProxy-stackValue(1),
 Integer));
firstInteger = interpreterProxy-stackValue(1);
if (interpreterProxy-failed()) {
return null;
}
if ((firstInteger  1)) {
if ((secondInteger  1)) {
if ((firstVal = (firstInteger  1))  (secondVal =
(secondInteger  1))) {
_return_value =
interpreterProxy-integerObjectOf(1);
if (interpreterProxy-failed()) {
return null;
}
interpreterProxy-popthenPush(2, _return_value);
return null;
} else {
if (firstVal  secondVal) {
_return_value =
interpreterProxy-integerObjectOf(-1);
if (interpreterProxy-failed()) {
return null;
}
interpreterProxy-popthenPush(2,
_return_value);
return null;
} else {
_return_value =
interpreterProxy-integerObjectOf(0);
if (interpreterProxy-failed()) {
return null;
}
interpreterProxy-popthenPush(2,
_return_value);
return null;
}
}
} else {
_return_value = interpreterProxy-integerObjectOf(-1);
if (interpreterProxy-failed()) {
return null;
}
interpreterProxy-popthenPush(2, _return_value);
return null;
}
} else {
if ((secondInteger  1)) {
_return_value = interpreterProxy-integerObjectOf(1);
if (interpreterProxy-failed()) {
return null;
}
interpreterProxy-popthenPush(2, _return_value);
return null;
} else {
_return_value = digitCompareLargewith(firstInteger,
secondInteger);
if (interpreterProxy-failed()) {
return null;
}
interpreterProxy-popthenPush(2, _return_value);
return null;
}
}
}

So the C code in the package is not the original source code.

At the very least, you should replace CRs with LFs in those files, so
that diffs are easier to generate.

Bug#332782: Release Notes: license clarification

Bug#491794: remove arpack from testing

2008-09-03 Thread Thomas Viehmann
Hi,

arpack with its present license is not DFSG-free (not even if we took
the clarification on Redhat bugzilla as amendment of the license).
As such it should not be released with Debian.

Barring last-minute relicensing, I propose to remove arpack and its
reverse dependencies freemat arpack++ apbs from lenny.

Kind regards

T.

 All I can say is that

I just run the tests 100 times (in my normal environment) and they
all passed. Mysterious.

I am currently trying to do that, but I see 2.6.26 requires a new 71.xx
version from nvidia. I was trying to do this on my amd64 system, but it
would appear 71.xx doesn't come in an amd64 version, only i386. I guess
being that old that might make sense, but there are AGP systems with
amd64 in them, so it doesn't entirely make sense. Maybe I just can't
find the package, or there is only one file to download from nvidia for
it.

 Erm, I was sure to have reported this already, but apparently I didn't.

Sure you did, twice actually. They were just closed as unreproducible
and have been archived since. See #427163 and #487013.

 t/1 and t/3 both block during the build.

I can reproduce the t/3.t hang quite easily on both an SMP amd64/sid
Xen host with an Etch kernel, and an i386/lenny uniprocessor host
with the Lenny kernel (2.6.26+15).

It would seem to be related to fakeroot, just running 'fakeroot make
test' hangs for me more than half of the time. It's evading strace, so
it's hard to say what exactly is hanging. The output from 3.t is just
one line before the hang:

 sid% fakeroot perl -Iblib/lib -Iblib/arch t/3.t
 ok 1 - use Thread::Pool::Simple;

The test suite is run in the install target. I think just moving it to
the build target so it's run without fakeroot would probably fix this.

This is the same as bug #483331 [1], merged.

 About the archive rebuild: The rebuild was done on about 50 AMD64 nodes
 of the Grid'5000 platform, using a clean chroot containing a sid i386
 environment. Internet was not accessible from the build systems.

I just successfully built cmucl on a sid-i386 chroot on my ThinkPad X60
(Intel Core2 T7200 [2]): can the Grid'5000 be the problem, here?

If needed I can try a native i386 build, but I don't think we need it.

Thx, bye,
Gismo / Luca

Without looking into the tcl bindings, I would guess that
 berkdb_env -create -home ./TESTDIR -txn -encryptaes $passwd
 berkdb_open -create -btree -mode 0644 -env $env -encrypt a.db

maps (modulo error checking) to something like

DB_ENV *env;
DB *d;
int i;

i = db_env_create(env, 0);
i = env-set_encrypt(env, passw0rd, DB_ENCRYPT_AES);
i = env-open(env, ./TESTDIR, DB_INIT_TXN | DB_CREATE, 0666);
i = db_create(d, env, 0);
i = d-open(d, NULL, a.db, NULL, DB_BTREE, DB_CREATE, 0644);

or something.

As for disabling encryption on a release arch, I don't know.

Bug#495319: Problem with renaming config option

2008-09-03 Thread Tim Dijkstra
severity 495319 important
thanks

Hi,

Somehow the problem is caused by the fact that one of the config
options changed name from 'poweroff' to 'shutdown'. If you previously
had poweroff that value was no-longer valid, somehow you not end up
with 'platform' which is the default...

To conclude, this is not a problem for first installs, only for
upgrades. So I don't think this bug is `grave'.

grts Tim

Bug#497723: arpack to be removed

2008-09-03 Thread Thomas Viehmann
Package: freemat
Severity: serious

Hi,

your reverse dependency arpack is about to be removed because its
license is not DFSG-free (see bug #491794).
This means that either your package needs to build / function without
this dependency or needs to be removed or moved to contrib.

Kind regards

T.

 And it has been fixed in 1.4-3, that should probably be unblocked.
