Bug#497623: linux-image-2.6.26: randomly crashes without traces
Package: linux-image-2.6.26-1-686 Version: 2.6.26-3 Severity: grave File: linux-image-2.6.26 Justification: renders package unusable Dear maintainers, I got really serious situations several times since using 2.6.26: somehow my system just crashes. It happens while browsing (no flash in use at that moment) or just editing OOo documents. The screen turns sort of black and, well, that's it... no shortcuts working, even magic keys don't do anything. A cold reset is needed. :( Unfortunately logs don't seem to get the crash, either. Syslog ended last time with --MARK-- and so did /var/log/messages. Below is the standard information collected by reportbug. If you want me to do anything to help debugging whatever happens, just tell me. Cheers, Hauke -- Package-specific info: ** Version: Linux version 2.6.26-1-686 (Debian 2.6.26-3) ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version 4.1.3 20080623 (prerelease) (Debian 4.1.2-23)) #1 SMP Wed Aug 20 12:56:41 UTC 2008 ** Command line: root=UUID=ab37a766-ecfe-4ffd-97ea-9323129412cb ro vga=791 ** Tainted: P (1) ** Kernel log: [5.421200] ohci_hcd :00:13.4: OHCI Host Controller [5.423769] ohci_hcd :00:13.4: new USB bus registered, assigned bus number 5 [5.426361] ohci_hcd :00:13.4: irq 18, io mem 0xfe02a000 [5.484067] usb usb5: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice [5.486638] hub 5-0:1.0: USB hub found [5.489207] hub 5-0:1.0: 2 ports detected [5.592072] usb usb5: New USB device found, idVendor=1d6b, idProduct=0001 [5.594631] usb usb5: New USB device strings: Mfr=3, Product=2, SerialNumber=1 [5.597189] usb usb5: Product: OHCI Host Controller [5.599730] usb usb5: Manufacturer: Linux 2.6.26-1-686 ohci_hcd [5.602302] usb usb5: SerialNumber: :00:13.4 [5.606839] ACPI: PCI Interrupt :00:13.5[D] - GSI 19 (level, low) - IRQ 19 [5.608825] ehci_hcd :00:13.5: EHCI Host Controller [5.611403] ehci_hcd :00:13.5: new USB bus registered, assigned bus number 6 [5.614524] ehci_hcd :00:13.5: debug port 1 [5.617074] ehci_hcd :00:13.5: irq 19, io mem 0xfe029000 [5.630222] ehci_hcd :00:13.5: USB 2.0 started, EHCI 1.00, driver 10 Dec 2004 [5.632007] usb usb6: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice [5.634595] hub 6-0:1.0: USB hub found [5.637132] hub 6-0:1.0: 10 ports detected [5.740074] usb usb6: New USB device found, idVendor=1d6b, idProduct=0002 [5.742637] usb usb6: New USB device strings: Mfr=3, Product=2, SerialNumber=1 [5.745206] usb usb6: Product: EHCI Host Controller [5.747736] usb usb6: Manufacturer: Linux 2.6.26-1-686 ehci_hcd [5.750267] usb usb6: SerialNumber: :00:13.5 [5.754853] SB600_PATA: IDE controller (0x1002:0x438c rev 0x00) at PCI slot :00:14.1 [5.756753] ACPI: PCI Interrupt :00:14.1[A] - GSI 16 (level, low) - IRQ 16 [5.759320] SB600_PATA: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later [5.762474] ide0: BM-DMA at 0xe400-0xe407 [5.765082] Probing IDE interface ide0... Some additional info to this bug report: I just found #479709 which seems to be very similar, although... Users in #479709 found some relation to chrony which is not installed on my system. OTOH my system hung twice while booting at setting system clock which again leads to some clock or time problems... I don't know that much about kernel stuff but I thought this could help. Bug#497583: missing source code / incomplete debian/copyright
El mar, 02-09-2008 a las 22:59 +0200, Andreas Barth escribió: Package: squeak-vm Version: 3.10.3+svn1902.dfsg Severity: serious Hi, the file platforms/unix/src/vm/interp.c starts with: /* Automatically generated from Squeak on an Array(9 May 2008 11:24:03 am) by VMMaker 3.8b6 [...] However, I cannot identify the source file for that file. This is the source file. Squeak people uses a Squeak image to store the virtual machine sources, as any other people can use svn o cvs. That message only means that the text file has been generated that way, but that file is the only and real source file to be compiled. Also, debian/copyright doesn't contain any hint how this file is generated. At debian/copyright you can read: All other source files below platforms/unix in this distribution that do not contain individual copyright and license notices are: Copyright (C) 1996-2006 by Ian Piumarta and other authors/contributors listed in individual source files. All rights reserved. For all of the above files: and then a BSD like license is written. So I think this packages fails the DFSG, and cannot be part of main in it's current version (and fails also the release policy, which makes the bug serious). I hope my informations have cleared it for you. If not, please tell me, and I will try to explain it better. Squeak is a very different piece of software from what people is used to see and I do know that its way of working is not easy to explain and understand. severity 487104 important kthxbye On Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 05:12:43PM +0100, Jonathan H N Chin wrote: The problem causes data loss, so it is grave at minumum: http://www.debian.org/Bugs/Developer#severities (At my site at least, the data loss is serious, as I explained in my previous message, but I grant that this may not be the case elsewhere.) Please don't drop people from the CC list if you're going to make a major change like this to the status of a bug. The first time I found out that this was upgraded to RC severity was when I noticed that my closure message went to the release critical bugs list. As previously discussed while I do think this should be fixed for lenny I really don't think this is a severe enough problem to warrant removing the package from the distribution; the definition of data loss is being stretched a bit here (the data is still present and accessible via interfaces other than ypcat) and the package continues to function well in the overwhelming majority of use cases. Like I say, I appreciate that this is something which is very important in your system and do think this is something that should be fixed for the next release but given the choice between having this bug and not shipping at all it seems much more constructive to ship with the bug. Incidentally, my testing also seemed to indicate that it was quite hard to get a Debian system to generate UTF-8 data which had this problem - I ended up using a hex editor to get the encoding that you had, other encodings worked fine. -- You grabbed my hand and we fell into it, like a daydream - or a fever. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#494168: Still there.
found 494168 1.3.8-1lenny1 thanks Bug is still there. Can't say I was surprised. It looks like all that was done is porting a few changes from experimental, which is also broken. It appears that this bug applies to some people, but not others. Some fixes work for some, and not others. This means that before you declare the bug as fixed, you will need to check with many different people. I would be happy to test any proposed fixes. I have a Lexmark z515 printer. I purged all of my cups packages. Even the libcups* libraries. And then rm -rf /etc/cups. Then I installed version 1.3.8-1lenny1 of these packages. Then I rebooted. The bug is still there, and it is exactly as I described above, which is mostly how the OP described it. -Brandon signature.asc Description: PGP signature

As soon as gcc is installed, ecl works like a charm (I tried the hello world example in the documentation [6]). Problem fixed [7]. FWIW, this is with Openmoko upstream 2.6.24 kernel. I've tried it on armv54te and armv4t boxes and ecl installs and runs fine, also under gdb. I can only think maybe some kernel difference - for example, ecl makes use of threads. As explained by Detlef [3], this could be a kernel bug. Thus this bug should be reassigned to the kernel package, but since it could be already fixed, I'd rather close it. Detlef, what do you think? If it would help to have ssh access to a native Debian armel box, to help find the difference, you are welcome - just write me. You can also play with qemu/qemubuilder as explained at [4]: ECL installs and works fine with a Debian 2.6.24 kernel. I noticed that in the svn tree there is for a while already changes for another bug that should get fixed along the same lines. And it makes me wonder a bit, the package team on alioth isn't /that/ small that a thing like this should be lying around for that long. :/ This is a call to the contributors of the pkg-vdr-dvb team, otherwise I plan to upload a NMU that will address this RC bug at least, propably pulling the other changes from the svn too, and other quick-fix bugs that might be open for the package (haven't taken a too close look yet). Bug#497671: cups: Windows paper size ignored after CUPS update to 1.3.8
Package: cups Version: 1.3.8-1 Severity: grave Tags: l10n Justification: renders package unusable I updated CUPS on my Debian (Lenny 2.6.21-2-686) to version 1.3.8 yesterday. Ever since, I'm having trouble printing with correct page size on a shared Canon iR 3220. Regardless of what page size is selected on the client, the job prints according to the page size in the printer settings on the CUPS Admin website. So regardless of what I select on my machine, if the default page size is set to A4, all prints come out A4. So it seems that the printer will only obey the generic printer settings configured via the CUPS Admin interface and not the ones passed by the client. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.21-2-686 (SMP w/4 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_GB.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_GB.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages cups depends on: ii adduser 3.110 add and remove users and groups ii cups-common 1.3.8-1Common UNIX Printing System(tm) - ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.5.22 Debian configuration management sy ii ghostscript 8.62.dfsg.1-3 The GPL Ghostscript PostScript/PDF ii libavahi-compat-libdn 0.6.22-3 Avahi Apple Bonjour compatibility ii libc6 2.7-13 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libcups2 1.3.8-1Common UNIX Printing System(tm) - ii libcupsimage2 1.3.8-1Common UNIX Printing System(tm) - ii libdbus-1-3 1.2.1-3simple interprocess messaging syst ii libgnutls26 2.4.1-1the GNU TLS library - runtime libr ii libkrb53 1.6.dfsg.4~beta1-4 MIT Kerberos runtime libraries ii libldap-2.4-2 2.4.10-3 OpenLDAP libraries ii libpam0g 1.0.1-4Pluggable Authentication Modules l ii libpaper1 1.1.23+nmu1library for handling paper charact ii libslp1 1.2.1-7.3 OpenSLP libraries ii lsb-base 3.2-19 Linux Standard Base 3.2 init scrip ii perl-modules 5.10.0-13 Core Perl modules ii poppler-utils [xpdf-u 0.8.4-1.1 PDF utilitites (based on libpopple ii procps1:3.2.7-8 /proc file system utilities ii ssl-cert 1.0.22 simple debconf wrapper for OpenSSL Versions of packages cups recommends: ii avahi-utils 0.6.22-3 Avahi browsing, publishing and dis ii cups-client 1.3.8-1Common UNIX Printing System(tm) - ii foomatic-filters 3.0.2-20080211-3.1 OpenPrinting printer support - fil ii smbclient 2:3.2.3-1 a LanManager-like simple client fo Versions of packages cups suggests: ii cups-bsd1.3.8-1 Common UNIX Printing System(tm) - ii cups-driver-gutenprint 5.0.2-4 printer drivers for CUPS ii cups-pdf2.4.8-2 PDF printer for CUPS ii foomatic-db 20080211-2 OpenPrinting printer support - dat ii foomatic-db-engine 3.0.2-20080211-1 OpenPrinting printer support - pro pn hplip none (no description available) pn xpdf-korean | xpdf-japa none (no description available) -- debconf information: cupsys/raw-print: true cupsys/backend: ipp, lpd, parallel, scsi, serial, socket, usb, snmp, dnssd -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. This is the source file. Squeak people uses a Squeak image to store the virtual machine sources, as any other people can use svn o cvs. That message only means that the text file has been generated that way, but that file is the only and real source file to be compiled. So, I can load that text file from within squeak, and do any changes there, and safe again? (i.e. that text file is the file actually used for modifications?) Yes, these are the needed steps: - Open a Squeak standard image (as an example you can use the etoys package in non-free, that image is olpc'ed (thought to teach and learn) so it's not very confortable to use it to program but you might use it. - Install inside this image, using the Squeak Package loader the package VMmaker. - Start VMMaker and config it telling the path to the sources you want to modify, for example the sources from the Debian package - Modify the sources inside Squeak to do any change - Use VMMaker to regenerate the sources. If you don't use vmmaker you can do it manually, but it's harder due to the size of the sources, and the need of manually modifying some of the code depending on the plugins you're going to compile. Smalltalkers use the Squeak Image to modify the code, usually the plugins [1]. Ian Piumarta, the main author of the unix virtual image port, does it manually using a standard text editor for part of the code, excepting the plugins. He uses to program them inside the image, as it's easier to debug them in real time. A latest note: when modifying the code inside the image instead of using a standard text editor, the code is modified in Slang (C with Smalltalk syntax), that's how smalltalkers do it to use the same Smalltalk class browser. It does not matter if you use a plain text editor or Squeak to modify the code: at the end of the process VMmaker makes the translation to plain C. Obviously VMmaker is free and its sources (in Smalltalk) are available inside the same Squeak image. Regards. José L. [1] In Squeak plugins are functions that're executed by the virtual machine instead of by the image. That's usually done by perfomance reasons as all the code inside the image is in Smalltalk, and some actions very OS related are faster in C (i.e. accesing the filesystem, keyboard or the sound card) signature.asc Description: Esta parte del mensaje está firmada digitalmente

Bug#497694: libaudio-cd-perl: problematic license
Package: libaudio-cd-perl Version: 0.05-3 Severity: serious Justification: Policy 2.1 Ansgar Burchardt has discovered that audio-cd contains a problematic license in the 0.05 release. README and CD.{xs,pm} say: Copyright (C) 1999-2002 by Doug MacEachern When included as part of the Standard Version of Perl or as part of its complete documentation whether printed or otherwise, this work may be distributed only under the terms of Perl's Artistic License as included in the file COPYING. Hi, arpack with its present license is not DFSG-free (not even if we took the clarification on Redhat bugzilla as amendment of the license). As such it should not be released with Debian. See #427163 and #487013. t/1 and t/3 both block during the build. I can reproduce the t/3.t hang quite easily on both an SMP amd64/sid Xen host with an Etch kernel, and an i386/lenny uniprocessor host with the Lenny kernel (2.6.26+15). It would seem to be related to fakeroot, just running 'fakeroot make test' hangs for me more than half of the time. It's evading strace, so it's hard to say what exactly is hanging. The output from 3.t is just one line before the hang: sid% fakeroot perl -Iblib/lib -Iblib/arch t/3.t ok 1 - use Thread::Pool::Simple; The test suite is run in the install target. I think just moving it to the build target so it's run without fakeroot would probably fix this. -- Niko Tyni [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
