-=| Niko Tyni, Wed, Sep 03, 2008 at 08:22:20PM +0300 |=- t/1 and t/3 both block during the build. I can reproduce the t/3.t hang quite easily on both an SMP amd64/sid Xen host with an Etch kernel, and an i386/lenny uniprocessor host with the Lenny kernel (2.6.26+15). It would seem to be related to fakeroot, just running 'fakeroot make test' hangs for me more than half of the time. It's evading strace, so it's hard to say what exactly is hanging. The output from 3.t is just one line before the hang: sid% fakeroot perl -Iblib/lib -Iblib/arch t/3.t ok 1 - use Thread::Pool::Simple; Now, is this (1) a bug in fakeroot (2) a bug in the package (3) the state of the world - threads being funky under fakeroot Attached is the script I used to test. should be run in the package directory, after perl Makefile.PL. If there is an argument given, runs the test under fakeroot, otherwise not. Requires the timelimit utility, available in the `timelimit' package. The default time limit is 10 seconds. On my system the test takes just under 5. Adjust to fit your environment. (!) Beware that in cases when the test fails, some stale processes may be left - both perl interpreters and faked-sysv ones, taking up non-trivial amounts of memory. Results here: $ sh threadtest.sh 100 Run 100: 100 OK, 0 not OK $ sh threadtest.sh 20 fakeroot Run 20: 8 OK, 12 not OK $ ps a|grep [p]erl|wc -l 1 $ ps a|grep [f]aked-sysv|wc -l 1 $ killall faked-sysv $ ps a|grep [p]erl|wc -l 0 $ ps a|grep [f]aked-sysv|wc -l 0 -- damJabberID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] threadtest.sh Description: Bourne shell script signature.asc Description: Digital signature

-=| Niko Tyni, Thu, Sep 04, 2008 at 08:44:41AM +0300 |=- It would seem to be related to fakeroot, just running 'fakeroot make test' hangs for me more than half of the time. /usr/share/doc/fakeroot/README reads: fakeroot can be built to either use SYSV IPC or TCP for message passing. Cases for which the SYSV IPC version fails or causes problems but for which fakeroot-tcp has been observed to work well include the items listed below. * Multithreaded applications (using pthread) * Running under realtime-preempt kernel Indeed, I can't get the tests to hang with fakeroot-tcp. Confirmed: $ sh threadtest.sh 100 fakeroot-tcp Run 100: 100 OK, 0 not OK Adding the patch tag based on the above evidence. I'll make the changes, upload and ask for unblock. Bug#486136: Epiphany unable to read preferences
Le mercredi 03 septembre 2008 à 09:30 +0200, Erich Schubert a écrit : To me, epiphany is pretty much unusable now (thus severity 'grave'). It will remember neither passwords nor cookies, and every now and then it even stops doing any new network connection, then I have to close the browser and restart it. This is bug#494058. If you have any useful information about how to reproduce this issue, please send it to http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=535127 It also crashes on closing tabs with flash applets, but I've already gotten used to pressing the home button before closing a tab with flash in it... This is #486125, and I don’t know any solution besides using swfdec instead of the non-free flash plugin. When using a link to a protocol it doesn't know (try typing icq:1 into the location bar), I can reproducibly get the following dialog (and I didn't succeed in having it run an appropriate application for the link, while it used to run /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/FOOBAR/command: http://people.debian.org/~erich/epiphany-bug.png This is another symptom of #494058. IMHO there are some grave incompabilities left for epiphany with xulrunner 1.9 We already know that Gecko 1.9 is a giant pile of crap. And frankly, I have no good solution to fix it. It affects badly devhelp, epiphany, galeon, yelp and liferea, with no clear sign from upstream that they are willing to fix this. Bug#497781: update-inetd: Lacks debconf dependencies, write on stdout while debconf might be active
Package: update-inetd Version: 4.30+nmu1 Severity: serious /usr/share/perl5/DebianNet.pm makes usage of Debconf but the package doesn't have a corresponding dependency. Furthermore in --add mode, update-inetd might display something on stdout while this should be avoided since stdout might be used for debconf's communication. The line system(echo $modearg |itox); should thus probably be changed to system(echo $modearg |itox 2); I'd also like to stress that #473290 is affecting several packages in the archive right now... most maintainers do not know that update-inetd might call debconf as the prompt appears in very are case. I just noticed sane-utils and its maintainer believes that #473290 should be fixed instead of working-around this in his package. The sane-utils simply blocks during his configuration stage when update-inetd tries to communicate with debconf. I would consider this release critical but I leave that up to you to upgrade it. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing'), (500, 'stable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.26-1-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=fr_FR.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash -- debconf information excluded -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#497297: [xfce4] Summary of problem
Package: xfce4 Version: 4.4.2.1 --- Please enter the report below this line. --- Okay, I'm going to clarify by being more organized and coherent. Using the XFCE4 Desktop Task results in a system that does not start the XFCE4 Desktop (gdm starts and the session tries to start, but fails) This is because the desktop task depends on gdm and xfce4 and: gdm depends on gnome-session-manager | x-terminal-emulator gnome-session-manager depends on gnome-settings-daemon xfce4 depends on xfce4-mcs-manager The gnome-settings-daemon when it loads blocks the xfce4-mcs-manager from loading. xfce4-mcs-manager is required for the xfce4 desktop. However, the XFCE4 desktop task also depends on xfce4-terminal which provides x-terminal-emulator, so gdm's dependencies *should* be satisfied. It appears that selecting the task (+ on the task) selects gdm before xfce4-terminal, therefore gdm's dependencies pull on gnome-session-manager before xfce4-terminal is selected in the gui. This means it's easy to end up with a non-starting desktop if one installs the standard system and then starts aptitude and select the task in order to get an xfce4 desktop. (As in unless you know it's going to happen it will happen). Bug#497220: acpi-support-base: Needs to depend on finger
Hi Phil, Phil Endecott wrote: I am trying to get the lid event to suspend on my Eee 901 and have encountered the following problems: 1. getXuser() in /usr/share/acpi-support/power-funcs uses finger, but the package does not depend on finger (and I didn't have it installed). Thanks for reporting, added! 2. getXuser() is called from CheckPolicy() in /usr/share/acpi-support/policy-funcs and $displaynum is not set. Do you expect that $displaynum is set by the caller of CheckPolicy(), i.e. in this case eeepc-acpi-scripts' /etc/acpi/actions/lid.sh? Or should it be set to 0 in CheckPolicy()? (Most users won't notice this second problem as the grep in getXuser will look for ':' when displaynum is not set and match either the idle time or the login time. In fact, even with a valid display number, the pattern ':0' will frequently match the idle or login time in the second finger|grep|awk. You need to take care to match only in the Tty column of the finger output.) The way I see it, there are two issues here: First of all, the format provided by finger is (:$displaynum) or (:$displaynum.screennum). We filter by :$displaynumspace, which doesn't even find (:$displaynum). We then filter by just :$displaynum, which frequently gives unwanted matches, as you mention. I've replaced it by a filter for (:$displaynum) and then for (:$displaynum as a fallback. Secondly, the call from CheckPolicy() is completely incorrect. Like you say, the getXuser function is intended to be called when the display number has already been determined. CheckPolicy() should have called getXconsole, which gets the foreground X display and then calls getXuser for that display! I'll put fixes in for these issues. Bug#497441: Bug#497649: wordnet: wnb does not show all synonims any more
On Wed, 3 Sep 2008, Francesco Potorti` wrote: In the wordnet browser, after looking for a name, I ask for its synonims. However, I only get a line saying that there are N senses. I can only get the synonims one at a time, by writing a sense number in the sense box and then asking for synonims. I can confirm that $ wordnet test -synsn Synonyms/Hypernyms (Ordered by Estimated Frequency) of noun test 6 senses of test shows the problem - so the problem is not only in the wnb GUI but has its roots in the underlying library / command line interface. This is a regression with respect to the previous behaviour of displaying the synonims of all the senses if the sense box was empty. I can also confirm that this problem does not occure in version 3.0-11 package version of WordNet - so the security audited version that was uploaded to fix #497441 was not clean and just produces this bug. I will give try to inspect the patch and with some luck and reverting parts of the patch set we might find the part which will introduce this bug. Bug#497721: phpbb3: still fails to setup database with Postgres
Package: phpbb3 Version: 3.0.2-2 Followup-For: Bug #497721 Hi, Phpbb3 still fails to set up the database for me: NOTICE: CREATE TABLE / PRIMARY KEY will create implicit index phpbb_zebra_pkey for table phpbb_zebra ERROR: function unix_timestamp() does not exist LINE 1: ...ig_name, config_value) VALUES ('board_startdate', UNIX_TIMES... ^ HINT: No function matches the given name and argument types. You might need to add explicit type casts. The expression EXTRACT(EPOCH FROM CURRENT_TIMESTAMP(0)) should give the current time in seconds since epoch. Ignoring the error made the package install. Next problem: After setting up apache I got an error about a missing include (include/db/pgsql.php). I had to change $dbtype in /etc/phpbb3/database.inc.php to `postgres' instead of `pgsql' to make it use the correct file. After this I only get an empty page, there is no message in Apache's error.log. I had now to install `php5-pgsql'. This should be recommended by phpbb3 (also maybe move php5-mysql to Recommends: since it should not be required when using another backend). I also changed $dbhost to `127.0.0.1' as Postgres seems not to allow password authentication on the UNIX domain socket by default (only ident). It would be nice if phpbb3 worked out-of-the-box with Postgres' default config (though this is a wishlist point). Now I get missing includes due to the incomplete configuration set up by dbconfig-common: [phpBB Debug] PHP Notice: in file /includes/session.php on line 450: session::include_once(./includes/auth/auth_.php) [session.include-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory This setting is included in the SQL statements provided to dbconfig-common, but it was not run due to the error above. The udebs currently in testing are targetted for Lenny d-i beta2. Moving udebs from unstable to testing is part of the process to create a new release of the installer; and this is not a continuous process like the rest of Debian. Bug#497297: [xfce4] Summary of problem
On Thu, Sep 04, 2008 at 06:22:27AM -0400, Daniel Dickinson [EMAIL PROTECTED] was heard to say: It appears that selecting the task (+ on the task) selects gdm before xfce4-terminal, therefore gdm's dependencies pull on gnome-session-manager before xfce4-terminal is selected in the gui. I see your point. Unfortunately, the design of this part of the program makes it hard to accomplish what you want (it would take an invasive change), so I'm afraid I'll have to defer this fix until after lenny, unless the release managers disagree. Bug#497619: netinst: fail to create ext3 file systems
Adding d-release as this looks like this issue may impact release planning. On Thursday 04 September 2008, Theodore Tso wrote: On Thu, Sep 04, 2008 at 12:55:23AM +0200, Frans Pop wrote: The Depends on e2fsprogs-udeb are e2fslibs (= 1.41.0), libblkid1 (= 1.37), libc6 (= 2.7-1), libcomerr2 (= 1.37), libuuid1 (= 1.37) The e2fsprogs-udeb used to depend on just libblkid1-udeb and libc6, all the other dependencies are completely new. Looks like the dependencies have randomly changed because of a serious packaging error with the most recent upload(s) of the latest upstream of e2fsprogs. This was caused by the introduction of the use dpkg-gensymbols in 1.41.1-2, I suspect. I'll fix the control file to manually specify the dependencies for the udeb packages. That is a very ugly solution to be honest and likely to cause random breakages in the future if the executables for some reason do depend on additional libraries. Letting debhelper/dpkg take care of it is very much to be preferred, especially as it worked correctly in the old version. Stupid question, though --- I thought D-I would be doing builds against testing, not unstable? As much as I would like to get the quite large number of bug fixes that are in the 1.41.1 maintenance release into Lenny, I thought the Lenny Freeze ship had sailed long ago (to horribly Vita-Mix a metaphor). Lenny currently has e2fsprogs 1.41.0-3, which would not have this problem. I'm a bit surprised that Debian Installer would be doing daily builds against what is currently in unstable. There are very good reasons why D-I is still taking udebs from unstable (it does of course _install_ lenny). I'm currently not in the mood for an elaborate explanation of those reasons though. Note also that with your upload you have violated one of the basic freeze rules anyway: to only upload changes to unstable that are targeted for Lenny, _especially_ for core (library) packages. Anything else should either be kept back or uploaded to experimental. Main reason behind that rule is that you have now made it effectively impossible to upload urgent bug fixes for Lenny, based on the current Lenny version, through unstable. Another reason is to avoid exactly the kind of issues in this BR. P.S. Here are some of the bug fixes which are in 1.41.1 that are not in 1.41.0 that might be especially relevant: * Fix dumpe2fs -i and debugfs -i. (Closes: #495830) * Fix blkid cache validation and some possible blkid crashes (Closes: #493216) * Fix filefrag's ideal extent calculation (Closes: #458306) * Fix resize2fs incorrectly managing directory in-use counts when shrinking filesystems and directory inodes need to be moved. Not sure what the point of mentioning these is as with your last uploads you've effectively blocked any chance of doing an upload targeted at Lenny with only these fixes. But in any case, I had not planned to try to ask for a Freeze exception, precisely because I didn't want to cause problems for some of its downstream dependencies, such as the d-i. My thought was to wait until a future update of Lenny, and backport just the most critical non-ext4 related bugs at that time --- especially if Lenny is releasing in September. Some observations: - Lenny is not releasing in September - any such changes would have to satisfy the rules for stable updates, which by the sound of it they may not... One option to consider at this point would be to re-upload the lenny version to unstable with an added epoch, but I will leave that decision to you and possibly the release team. I'm not really sure what to suggest; I think that understanding what w, who, finger etc. are really trying to tell us WRT X sessions would be a good start. I doubt there's anything useful in the man pages Your wtmp entry comes from xdm, Bart's probably comes from a terminal emulator. I have this: USER TTY FROM LOGIN@ IDLE JCPU PCPU WHAT julien :0 -02:54 ?xdm? 14:13m 0.04s -:0 julien pts/0:0.0 02:54 25:03m 0.58s 0.58s bash (first xdm, then xterm) I'd say looking at the tty is the right thing to do. Ah yes; I did wonder about that. For some reason I'm not seeing lines in w, who or finger output for terminal emulators running inside my X session, though I have seen them in the past. If you did have them they could in principle be for different users than the user who owns the X session itself. The TTY=:0 line is the right one to use. But presumably Bart is not seeing a line like that, right? Phil. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Looking at the diff between the Lenny and Sid versions, I wonder at the dropped build dependencies on libdevmapper/libselinux1. I also now notice the build dependency on dietlibc, which is a complete unknown for D-I. I wonder if the real reason for the broken dependencies may be there. D-I uses libc... Bug#497721: phpbb3: got phpbb working with Postgres
Package: phpbb3 Followup-For: Bug #497721 Hi, I managed to set up phpbb3 with Postgres. The following changes were required: * some substitions for initial data, see patch to debian/rules below * in /etc/phpbb3/database.inc.php: change $dbtype from `pgsql' to `postgres'. This should probably done in config.php. * also in database.inc.php: change $dbhost to `127.0.0.1' to make phpbb3 work with Postgres' default configuration I am not sure how the last point should be addressed in a more general way. Perhaps it is enough to mention it in README.Debian? OK; so xdm and gdm (gdm==x-session-manager???) are inconsistent about what they put in the wtmp records (or whatever they are). That's unfortunate, but I bet we're not the first to discover it. This message about the error concerns a few packages at once. I've tested all the packages (for Lenny) on my Debian mirror. All scripts of packages (marked as executable) were tested. In some packages I've discovered scripts with errors which may be used by a user for damaging important system files or user's files. For example if a script uses in its work a temp file which is created in /tmp directory, then every user can create symlink with the same name in this directory in order to destroy or rewrite some system or user file. Symlink attack may also lead not only to the data desctruction but to denial of service as well. Even if you create files or directories with help of function 'RANDOM' or pid(), then your system is not protected. Attacker can create many symlinks in order to destroy your data or create 'denial of service' for your package scripts. Even if you make rm(dir) for files/directories, then your system is not protected. Attacker can permanently create symlinks. This list is created with the help of script. This list is sorted by hand. Howewer in some cases mistake is possible. Please, Be understanding to possible mistakes. :) I set Severity into grave for this bug. The table of discovered problems is below.
