Bug#391352: still upgrade problem with missing ntp user

2006-10-29 Thread Arthur de Jong
reopen 391352
thanks

After a recent upgrade the ntp system user seems to be gone. Tracing my
steps, this is probably caused by purging the ntp-simple package after
the new ntp package is installed (from a glance at the postinst and
postrm).

Also it seems that /var/lib/ntp and /var/log/ntpstats are also gone. The
system user and these directories were probably owned by an old ntp-*
package and moving them to the plain ntp package causes these problems.

 This was in fact a compiler bug. It has been reported at

Hmmm? Could you clarify that?

The project is BSD licenced, but there seem to be individual files in
the 3.0 tree that are licenced under GPL and Artistic. I'm trying to
get upstream to clarify ownership of each source file atm and confirm
if these licences are in fact acceptible together.

Hi

Thanks for letting me know, but this was actually fixed in the
Debian package before the fixed realvnc was released, and before a CVE
number was assigned to the issue (if I remember correctly). The
fix in Debian is slightly different, but correct the same issue.
As that fix is the only fix that the upstream version 4.1.2 version
change from 4.1.1, I have decided to not go up to that version.

vnc4 (4.1.1+X4.3.0-10) unstable; urgency=high

   * Correction of critical security issue. Thanks to Martin Kogler
 [EMAIL PROTECTED] that informed me about the issue,
 and provided the patch.
 This flaw was originally found by Steve Wiseman of intelliadmin.com.
   * Applied patch from Javier Kohen [EMAIL PROTECTED] that
 inform the user that only 8 first characters of the password will
 actually be used when typing more than 8 characters, closes:
 #355619.

This is the correction that the Debian version contains:

And the difference between the upstream and the Debian fix is:

The source for 4.1.2 is now available:
http://www.realvnc.com/pipermail/vnc-list/2006-May/054936.html

The main difference to my patch is, that they use
  if (i == secTypes.end())
to check for an invalid security type. I use
  if (*i != secType)

(I in this case is Martin Kögler, that helped me with a quick
correction for this issue).

These builds fail like this:

gcc -Wall -Werror -Wstrict-prototypes -ggdb -fomit-frame-pointer -Os
-DSendmail=\/usr/sbin/sendmail -t\ -DCONFFILE=\/tmp/mdadm.conf\
-DCONFFILE2=\/etc/mdadm.conf\ -DDEBIAN  -c -o util.o util.c

make[2]: *** [util.o] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory /build/buildd/mdadm-2.5.4'

The code in util.c is this:
struct blkpg_ioctl_arg a;

struct blkpg_partition p;

131 a.op = BLKPG_DEL_PARTITION;
132 a.data = (void*)p;
133 a.datalen = sizeof(p);
134 a.flags = 0;
135 memset(a.data, 0, a.datalen);
for (p.pno=0; p.pno  16; p.pno++)
ioctl(fd, BLKPG, a);

in /usr/inlcude/linux/blkpg.h we have:
struct blkpg_ioctl_arg {
int op;
int flags;
int datalen;
void __user *data;
};

It looks like __user is causing a problem. If I delete it then util.c builds OK.
__user is defined in linux/compiler.h

#ifdef __CHECKER__

# define __user __attribute__((noderef, address_space(1)))

#else

# define __user

If I set it to __attribute__((noderef, address_space(1))) in blkpg.h then that
build OK too.

So I really don't understand what gcc is whinging about.

I suspect this is really a gcc bug. What do the threee arches it breaks on have
in common?

Hi,

I've just tried to reproduce this in an AMD64 sid chroot and can't. Do
you have any more details which might help us reproduce it?

Thanks,

Mark

Hi,
yes, it's not a grave bug: removing ~/.ddd directory ddd starts again.

To reproduce the bug both, a customized ~/.ddd/init file and ~/.ddd/lock
file that contains a wrong hostname (i.e. you have changed it since last ddd
session), are needed.

Attached you have the files that cause ddd fails to start on my system. Removing
lock file or changing the hostname inside to the right one things go fine.

All that means it's a very unlikely bug. Sorry for the noise.

Best Regards,
Manolo

 yes, it's not a grave bug: removing ~/.ddd directory ddd starts again.

Great - thank you very much for the debugging info. I am going to
downgrade the bug report severity, and I'll let the maintainer get on
with actually figuring out what went wrong :)

Take care,

Bug#395999: Remote DoS and possible code execution in screen = 4.0.2

2006-10-29 Thread Friedrich Delgado Friedrichs
Package: screen
Version: 4.0.2-4.1
Severity: critical
Tags: security
Justification: breaks unrelated software

The following proof-of-concept exploit (by dalias @ #screen on
freenode.net, realname not known, probably (hopefully) he's one of the
guys credited in the upstream security announcement) will crash a
screen session with utf8 enabled. (:utf8 on, :defutf8 on)

#include locale.h
#include wchar.h
#include stdio.h
int main() {
 setlocale(LC_CTYPE, );
 wchar_t i, j, k; for (i=' '; i0x7f; i++) for (j=0x300; j0x370; j++)
for(k=0x300; k0x370; k++) printf(%lc%lc%lc, i, j, k); }

A workaround is to disable utf8. (defutf8 off in screenrc)

Upstream security announcement is at
http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/screen-users/2006-10/msg00028.html

The whole screen session with all programs running in it will get lost
(hence: breaks unrelated software) and this can be triggered by any
software sending utf-8 characters to the terminal (such as a console
mail or news reader or irc client).

This is a *possible* remote code execution, because in the debugger
some registers are reportedly overwritten.

Kind regards
 Friedel

Bug#395961: gabber: Links with GPL-incompatible licensed OpenSSL

 Gabber is a GPL-licensed software, and, as so, should not be distributed
 linked to libraries whose license is incompatible with the GPL. That
 includes OpenSSL.

 That's a serious bug, because it's a GPL violation (you cannot
 distribute the complete corresponding source code licensed as GPL).

Gabber's license has an exception allowing linking to OpenSSL. See the
COPYING.exception file in its sources.

Bug#396006: libopensync0: FHS violation

2006-10-29 Thread Guillem Jover
Package: libopensync0
Version: 0.19-1.1
Severity: serious

Hi,

This packages installs the osplugin binary under /usr/libexec, which
is an FHS violation. This also would prevent coinstalling this library
with a new version with a different soname.

regards,
guillem

Bug#295270: Messages cannot be deleted and index file gets corrupted when there isn't enough disk space

2006-10-29 Thread Ben Hutchings
reassign 295270 evolution-data-server
thanks

The problem appears to be that camel_mbox_summary_sync_mbox() in
camel/providers/local/camel-mbox-summary.c marks changes in the summary
as having been applied to the folder as soon as they have been applied
to the new mbox file, even though an error later on - such as running
out of disk space - will result in the new mbox file being removed. It
should process all summary updates after updating the mbox file. (Also,
possibly it should delete the summary files immediately before replacing
the mbox file.)

Fabian, this code is specific to mbox but there may be similar problems
with summary/folder synchronisation for other access methods.

Ben.

Package: hal-device-manager
Version: 0.5.7-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Attempting to run hal-device-manager fails with a Python error:-

n# hal-device-manager
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File /usr/bin/hal-device-manager, line 7, in ?
  import pygtk
  ImportError: No module named pygtk

This appears to actually be the result of a Python problem:-

# python
Python 2.3.5 (#2, Jul 30 2006, 15:57:01)
[GCC 4.1.2 20060715 (prerelease) (Debian 4.1.1-9)] on linux2

['__all__', '__builtins__', '__doc__', '__file__', '__name__',
'_get_available_versions', '_pygtk_dir_pat', '_pygtk_required_version',
'fnmatch', 'glob', 'os', 'require', 'sys']

but with /usr/bin/python2.4:-

# /usr/bin/python2.4
Python 2.4.4c0 (#2, Jul 30 2006, 15:43:58)
[GCC 4.1.2 20060715 (prerelease) (Debian 4.1.1-9)] on linux2
Type help, copyright, credits or license for more information.
 import pygtk
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File stdin, line 1, in ?
  ImportError: No module named pygtk

However, trying to execute hal-device manager with the system default
Python also fails:-

# python `which hal-device-manager`
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File /usr/bin/hal-device-manager, line 15, in ?
  from DeviceManager import DeviceManager
  File /usr/share/hal/device-manager/DeviceManager.py, line 6, in ?
import dbus
ImportError: No module named dbus

This renders the package useless on my system, though I'm not sure if
this is an accident of Python configuration. I'm running a pretty much
default Python setup though...

severity 395995 important

(I'm setting severity to important, because a shutdown/restart does not
usually cause data loss)

What made you conclude, it is hald, which triggers the restart?
Have you tried to remove the start script /etc/dbus-1/event.d/20hal (or
better, just move it someplace else, so you can move it back again)?
If removing hal does not help, disable on service after the other in
/etc/rc2.d, which might be related to your problem, until you find the
culprit.

Could you list, which files are started in /etc/dbus-1/event.d (and
/etc/rcS.d, /etc/rc2.d).

Did you notice this behaviour with older versions of hal also? Have you
installed other software in between, that could be related to the problem?

You spoke of powersaved: It's by default setup to shutdown the notebook
if the battery level is under a critical level
(/etc/powersave/events:EVENT_BATTERY_CRITICAL).
Some laptops have *broken* batteries which need some time (30-60 sec)
until they report a sane battery level value. Could be that powersaved
issues a shutdown because your battery reports a critical level. This is
only a guess though.

Cheers,
Michael

Unfortunately the only way I know how to trigger this reliably is by
running the SyncEvolution TestEvolution CalendarSource test repeatedly
until E-D-S crashes. The stack backtraces that I quote in the Gnome
bugzilla entry came from such a crash. That doesn't mean that it cannot
occur during normal interactive use, it's just less likely.

If you want to reproduce it, the SyncEvolution 0.4 tar ball [1] contains
all sources that you need. Compile it normally, then follow the
instructions in HACKING to set up testing. You can skip the parts
about configuring two sources, one should be enough and you don't need a
SyncML server either.

Bug#396027: zope-ldapuserfolder: Problem when used with CMF = 1.6

2006-10-29 Thread Mark Hymers
Package: zope-ldapuserfolder
Version: 2.7-1
Severity: serious
Justification: maintainer says so

zope-ldapuserfolder doesn't fully work when used with CMF = 1.6
which we'll be shipping with etch. I'm about to upload 2.8~beta

fixes this and one or two other small problems.

This bug is just for the RMs to be able track the issue and to make sure
we don't ship 2.7-1 with etch.

Yeah, but it is a kernel-package issue, and Manoj made some haughty comment

already closed bugs.

Manoj is blacklisting me anyway, so it would be useful for someone else (you

just because i am affected by it, or something else so unproffesional. I
already pinged him twice on irc about this, and redirected the bug to
kernel-package.

Package: seahorse
Version: 0.9.5-3

seahorse reliably crashes when I ask it to delete a key. I have lots of
keys.
In the Keys I've Collected tab, I right-click on a key, and select
delete
(or I use the pull down menu). A dialog asks for confirmation, I say to
go ahead and delete it. gpg runs and successfully deletes the key, and
then
seahorse crashes, and the session manager pops up its dialog and offers
to
restart it.

If I select multiple keys at once and try to delete them, I get the
confirmation
dialog again. It only mentions the last key of those selected when it
asks
if I really want to delete the key. I click on Delete and it asks me
about the
next one, and so forth (going in reverse order, which is inane), and
then
seahorse exits. This time the session manager does not offer to
restart.
I start it by hand, and again, gpg has correctly deleted the keys.

Now I select all the keys in my I've Collected display and try to
delete them.
I get the repeating-dialogs annoyance, but after only a few times,
seahorse
crashes, and the session manager notices this one and offers to restart.

Bug#392407: preparing NMU

2006-10-29 Thread Neil Williams

Hi Joey,

I've tested your patch now that I've fixed bug #393807.

Apart from a Build-Conflicts: on automake1.9 that I've had to add,
cronosii now builds in a chroot (pdebuild) and the resulting .deb
installs and operates fine. See bug #393807 for the other patch.

I'll upload one NMU to close both bugs later.

Quoting Julian Gilbey in the logs for this bug:

 According to Manoj in the logs to bug#394661, which was blocking this
 bug and has since been closed, the bug was fixed in kernel-package
 10.063. So I guess that all that is needed is a rebuild of the
 kernels with a Build-Depends on a sufficiently recent kernel-package.

So, apparently, Manoj has already fixed his part, and the issue seems
to be now in your hands, kernel people, if the plan by Julian is
correct (rebuild kernels using a recent enough kernel-package).

The automake maintainer is working towards reclaiming the automake
package name, which currently rests on automake1.4, the oldest version
of automake. Your package Build-Depends on automake, hence this bug
report. Please see http://wiki.debian.org/AutomakeTransition for more
information on this transition.

The attached patch changes the automake build depend to automake1.4.

Bug#321025: This is a design flaw

2006-10-29 Thread Stephen Gran
The problem here is that you are trying to munge another packages config
files, and your parser doesn't know all the possible conditionals that
exim can possibly use. Since exim upstream keeps adding new ones, this
is bound to fail again and again.

The simplest solution is to just store the acl files as
/etc/greylistd/exim-{rcpt,data}-acl and ask the exim4 maintainers to put
an
.include_if_exists /etc/greylistd/exim-$acl-acl

at the right moment in the default acl. Then you can manage your own
file as you like, and not break unrelated software.

I have pinged Zugschlus on IRC about this, but not heard back yet.

Thanks,

  According to Manoj in the logs to bug#394661, which was blocking this
  bug and has since been closed, the bug was fixed in kernel-package
  10.063. So I guess that all that is needed is a rebuild of the
  kernels with a Build-Depends on a sufficiently recent kernel-package.

 So, apparently, Manoj has already fixed his part, and the issue seems
 to be now in your hands, kernel people, if the plan by Julian is
 correct (rebuild kernels using a recent enough kernel-package).

Nice to know, but it would have been nice for Manoj to tell us about it,
especially as the issue surfaced within days of the -3 upload.

We really need a better way to handle bug reports which affect more than one
package, since cloning and merging is not the best way to go for those.

You should maybe have a look at the compiler warnings first, for example:

in fact, it is. Also, it is a bug that the compilation doesn't stop at
the segfault.

In the past, the BTS allowed things like this:
