Dublin, Ireland bug squashing party
Hi there. It's come to my attention that bug squashing parties are _the_ way to fix bugs. Not to be seen as uncool, I'm proposing a bug squashing party somewhere in Dublin, Ireland at a mutually agreed date and time. I'm just canvassing for support right now, as I don't know the Debian procedure for doing this - or even if there is one. One of the topics/issues/bugs I hope to address is getting my open source projects in SourceForge knocked into shape for acceptance into Debian. I don't know if that meets the criteria for party - maybe a shindig or a hootenanny. Re: duplicates in the archive
Neil Williams codeh...@debian.org writes: Whatever happens, there is no place for yet another duplicate of packages which already have multiple duplicates in the archive. I think it's hard to defend the contention that the quantity of packages has some strong relationship to whether or not those programs duplicate the functionality of other programs. Surely it also depends on the type of program, rather heavily. For example, I'm sure that we have more than 42 different programming languages in the archive, so obviously we don't need Java, right? You can do all the same things in C++. Or hey, let's pick one of either Perl or Python; they can both do the same things. I can definitely come up with more than 42 different ways to write an editor, all of which may appeal to different people, different tasks, or different work styles. But hey, I like Emacs, which clearly does everything that vi can do, so away with vim! And nvi just duplicates vim! We probably don't need 42 different ways to find duplicate files on local disk, since that's a relatively clear and well-defined task and there's only so many ways to go about it (and each implementation could probably gain the features of the others). But window managers are fundamental to one's style of interaction with the computer, and there are *huge* differences between them. A tiling window manager is not interchangeable with a desktop environment, which in turn is not interchangeable with a window manager designed to be operated without a mouse, or one that's optimized for a particular class of accessibility issues. And that's not even getting into the window managers that are used primarily because they embed a particular scripting language that people want to use to automate their windowing actions. By all means, let's get rid of packages that really do only offer subsets of functionality of other packages. But UI is part of functionality, and a different UI *is* a different feature. By all means, let's get rid of poorly-maintained packages. But if someone finds a package that does something in a way that nothing else does and that fits them, and they're able and willing to take care of it, having a place for those is one of Debian's strengths. We should be improving our tools and management techniques for handling large numbers of packages, including for retiring them when they're not being maintained, not trying to reduce the variety and depth of the distribution. And as sympathetic as I am to the concern about RC bugs in packages that are already in the archive, I suspect it's rather rare that fixing random RC bugs in other people's packages is the compelling, fun thing that gets someone involved in doing Debian development. I know it happens, but I bet more people join the project the way that I did: there's some specific piece of software that they want packaged for the distribution they already use, so they package it, and from that learn how to package, and from that branch out into helping with other parts of the distribution. Getting one's own package into the distribution is a really awesome feeling. I don't think it's good for the growth of the project, or for attracting new contributors, to put too many roadblocks in the way of someone feeling that. -- Russ Allbery (r...@debian.org) http://www.eyrie.org/~eagle/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-devel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. As you say yourself: There are lots of alternative packages in the archive already. So, what makes all the other alternatives acceptable but this one not? What makes 42 window manager acceptable but not 43? If it can be justified. That's what the objective comparison would need to demonstrate. The rejection of #43 should be justified, for example with conclusions from such comparison with the 42 other implementations. That's an established pattern in Debian - Let's not call your personal view an established pattern in Debian. Let's debate this and find a consensus before documenting it and advertising it as an established pattern in Debian. if someone wants to add something which is the same as something else, there should be a good reason to introduce the new one in that it needs to be better than the existing ones in some way which isn't achievable just by patching one of the existing ones. It is, in my opinion, OK that someone expresses an intent to package a 43th implementation in public so that anyone can compare it with the 42 other implementations and then argue why #43 would not be needed in Debian. Debian works on merit - packages and maintainers. Suggesting or packaging something which is without merit will usually result in complaints from your peers. Cope with it. Maintainers should not expect to be treated with kid gloves when what they are actually doing is wasting the free time of other volunteers. You can prevent your free time from being wasted by ignoring this ITP. If you actively want to keep the package of this ITP out of Debian, then you should produce some reasonable arguments, maybe after comparing all 43 implementations. But then it's your choice for doing all that work. Please don't blame the ITP submitter for wasting your time. We're used to 'Justification' as a concept for RC bugs, well an ITP is a bug in Debian and can also require justification. Some ITP bugs are simply invalid. An ITP is an expression of an intent to package some software. It does by itself not express I have analysed every alternative in Debian and I think this one is better. If you feel that this one is not better, then you should justify the rejection of the ITP. Someone needs to make that call and as we're all part of the QA team, various people do it according to their own free time, work area, expertise and general levels of annoyance with daft ideas. Yes, anyone can justify why an ITP should be rejected. Whether it's a joke package or a tiny package which needs to go into a collective package (goodies or devscripts or whatever), if maintainers (prospective or existing) can't do their own research ahead of filing a bug, it is up to the rest of us to point out the error. Yes, you're right about this. That's what I understand in peer review. I'm not in favor to get yet another window manager in Debian. All I'm saying is that filing a WNPP bug and wait whether a people complain loud enough is not the way to learn that. I think that it is OK that other people complain about an ITP. It is also OK to be very clear about why an ITP in particular is not welcome. Of course, politeness and friendliness are generally appreciated, and I think that this aspect started the debate. So feel free to file a patch to the Developer Reference explaining that if maintainers of prospective packages don't check for existing packages which provide the same or very similar functionality, any request to package such a duplicate needs to be accompanied by a detailed reasoning of *why* the existing packages are sufficiently inadequate that a new package is warranted instead of patching what we have. If you feel that Developer Reference can be improved, then feel free to do suggestions. The above is not a suggestion I can support. To me, such an expectation is common sense and I'm quite happy to continue criticising ITP's on the basis of being an unjustifiable duplicate of existing packages. It is good that you continue reviewing ITPs. But I would appreciate (and the ITP submitter would probably also appreciate) that you justify rejecting ITPs with good arguments and in a friendly way. Especially since a WNPP bug complaints are not worth that much. If you happen to find a DD to upload your stuff or you are DD yourself, you can silently ignore any

Re: Bug#678815: ITP: wmfs -- Window Manager From Scratch
Hello, First, thank to everyone for having responded. I've read the list of window managers in Thomas Koch's email, and, as said Serge, there are only a few tiling window managers in this list: - Awesome requires programming skills - Bluetile is for GNOME and there is no taskbar and no systray - dwm hasno configuration file - fvwm is very hard to setup - herbstluftwm has no window decoration, no launcher, no taskbar and no systray - i3-wm has a different behavior (tree data structure) - larswm seems very good, but there is no launcher, no widgets in the taskbar and no window decoration - matchbox seems to be for embedded systems - ratpoison has no window decoration and no launcher - xmonad has no window decoration and no launcher I'm not saying that WMFS is better than those window manager or that WMFS is perfect, but that WMFS offer another user experience than the window managers already in the Debian archive. As someone said in the thread, i forgotten to describe all the caracteristics of WMFS. So WMFS has the following features: - it's lightwieght - it's easily configurable - it's not ugly - there is are parametrable launcher (kind of prompts) - there is a systray - it supports Xinerama (for multiple displays) - it's EWMH-compliant - it supports rules - you can use the mouse for almost everything - you can reload the configuration on-the-fly - it can dynamically create/delete tags - you can add what you want in the taskbar/titlebars: progressbars, graphs, buttons, colors, images ... - the layout is manual - you can tab several clients in one window - it supports themes - you can use includes to split the configuration - you can control it remotely Q: what's its focus model: focus-follows-mouse, click-to-focus, etc? A: Both, you can select the one you want with the `focus` option in the config file Q: does it have a GUI configuration? A: GVim ? Q: does it support workspaces? A: Yes, but that's called tags Q: does it allow to move windows with mouse? A: Yes, you can move, resize, tab, change tag and close with the mouse Q: does it support urgency hints (WM_HINTS, NET_WM_STATE_DEMANDS_ATTENTION)? A: Yes, it highlights the clients that demands attention with a color of the theme Q: is it just tiling? what about stacking mode or floating windows? A: No, there is also a floating mode. Dialogs are in floating mode by default. Q: is it utf8/unicode friendly? works for window titles in french or korean? A: Good question, i will try that as soon as possible ... Q: is it translated to other languages? A: There is a French and a Spanish documentation on the wiki, but WMFS just manage windows and draw titlebars/taskbars, so it doesn't speaks english more than another language... Q: freetype/Xft or X core fonts? A: It supports freetype fonts Q: shape extension? round windows? (e.g. `xeyes`) A: I admit i haven't tryed... Q: how much RAM it takes? A: I haven't measured but its a lightweight program. Q: is it low-dependency (GTK/Qt/Tk/etc.)? The fourth time, you hit ctrl-C, and run DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive apt-get upgrade -- and then miss something that was actually important and didn't occur on previous installs. Please, let's keep upgrade information in the release notes. If some people don't read them, that's something we should try to fix; not by trying to work around the release notes, but by making them more accessible, easier to find, and more obvious instead. Well, if you update apt + dpkg first, then --add-architecture i386, and *then only* dist-upgrade (or if we manage to update apt / dpkg in stable, so that it does that automatically), it wouldn't display the debconf. So if you were doing lots of upgrades, it would display the debconf screen only if you do the mistake to forget about the --add-architecture i386. So I don't think that my proposal is an abuse of debconf as you describe. It's an abuse of debconf because if you know the system is broken, we should do better than just to tell the user that the system is broken. We should either give them the option to automatically fix it on upgrade, or - better by far - we should automatically fix it for them on upgrade. Why would anyone who has the ia32-libs package installed want anything *but* to have 'dpkg --add-architecture i386' on upgrade? That said, I'm not sure I wouldn't also consider it an abuse of base-files to make that package do this on upgrade. If you're going to task some package with transitioning to multiarch, it probably makes more sense to do it in dpkg itself. As long as we don't have a arch X packages for arch Y partial architecture I don't think anything should silently add a foreign arch automatically. Also adding the architecture requires an apt-get/aptitude update and restarting the upgrade/dist-ugrade so that can't be done from maintainer scripts cleanly. I think the place where it makes sense to add a foreign architecture is in Debian-Installer. I think people who upgrade will have to read the release notes. File naming of scripts in /etc/init.d
Hi, I noticed that some scripts in /etc/init.d/ are suffixed by .sh and some are not. On my sytem: host:/etc/init.d# ls -1 *.sh bootmisc.sh checkfs.sh checkroot.sh console-screen.sh hostname.sh hwclock.sh keymap.sh mountall-bootclean.sh mountall.sh mountdevsubfs.sh mountkernfs.sh mountnfs-bootclean.sh mountnfs.sh mtab.sh umountnfs.sh All except console-screen.sh, hwclock.sh and keymap.sh are from the initscripts package. I was wandering if there was a reason from this discrepancy. So I had a look in the Debian Policy Manuel, and one can read (subsection 9.3.2 Writing the scripts) that These scripts should be named /etc/init.d/package. I failed to find another reference to script naming in the rest of the document. So 1) nowhere is .sh suffixing mentioned and 2) some scripts are not named by their package's name (hwclock.sh is part of the util-linux package). Is there a reason for this? Would it be purely aesthetics to clean out these script names? Thank you for the great job. [DEP 8] Re: Is it possible to run autopkgtest without a virtual machine ?
Charles Plessy writes ([DEP 8] Re: Is it possible to run autopkgtest without a virtual machine ?): For networking, how about a needs-networking restriction ? I'm definitely in general in favour of expanding the set of restrictions etc. We need to be sure that the semantics are clear though. Would that mean only that the machine needs to have a non-localhost network interface, or also that it can access the global internet somehow (and if so which protocols) ? For protecting the user from side effects of runnign the tests, there is the Restrictions field where one can declare that tests can break the system. Perhaps a milder restriction could be added, for tests that can disturb the system (such as restarting services, etc.), so that other tests can be considered safe for local execution. A large number of regression tests that I know are completely safe, like checking that 2 + 2 returns 4, with of course the limitation that running them exposes to the same possible bugs as for using the program in other contexts. Again, yes. Perhaps you could describe those of your package(s) and the test(s) which would benefit from this ? That would make it easier to think about what exactly the restrictions should be. I think that it would be a great feature to be able to run such tests locally with a simple command that can take advantage of autopkgtest. Yes. This means also shipping them in a binary package, but we have already such packages containing exactly the test data that is needed. No, this won't work because the tests might need stuff from the source package; might need the source package to be built; and we shouldn't clog the archive up with test suites; the build depends would need to be installed anyway. The right answer is simply for such an automatic tool to download the source package. Ian. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-devel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? You could do an online poll to get an idea of dates, times are probably best thought of as the whole day / weekend. (Weekends will allow people to travel and are usually easier for locals too.) I've seen people using Doodle polls for this kind of thing before, with reasonable success. http://www.doodle.com/ Create a wiki page so that people can put their names down if they are able to attend and others can offer crash space / accommodation. If the date isn't arranged, link to the doodle poll but get the venue organised early so that people know where they need to be. Do you have a rough idea of when? Which month? (Note that a lot of Debian people will be in Nicaragua in early July - you could organise the BSP to be alongside DebConf, allowing for time zone differences, or do it afterwards and some of the people who went to DebConf might be able to attend the BSP too.) I'm just canvassing for support right now, as I don't know the Debian procedure for doing this - or even if there is one. The wiki page has already been mentioned in this thread, there's a HOWTO linked from that page. There's usually very good support for BSP's - lots of people want to go to a BSP, it's organising the venue that can be the harder part. One of the topics/issues/bugs I hope to address is getting my open source projects in SourceForge knocked into shape for acceptance into Debian. 2012/6/24 Guillem Jover wrote: Why? Just to have it autotools-compatible? If I was writing a custom build system I would be thinking about using -Wp option, since that's exactly why it's there for — to pass some options to the preprocessor (or, being honest, I would ignore CPPFLAGS unless I use the preprocessor). That would be wrong as -Wp bypassed the compiler driver. Yes, that's the point! If user wanted to pass parameters to the compiler, he would used CFLAGS/CXXFLAGS. And since he used CPPFLAGS I assume that he wanted to pass them to the preprocessor, not compiler. So when invoking gcc build system must prepend CPPFLAGS with -Wp. BTW, it's interesting that Fedora/CentOS use -Wp,-D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 and they use it in CFLAGS/CXXFLAGS. No one forces you to pass CPPFLAGS to the build system Ah, no, I did not mean that. I just mean that not every build system support CPPFLAGS, and even those who support it, do it in different ways. So if dpkg wants to be easy to use with many build systems, it should stick to CFLAGS/CXXFLAGS, and avoid using CPPFLAGS if that is possible. you can always do something like: make CFLAGS=$(CPPFLAGS) $(CFLAGS) It's not just I can. As long as dpkg uses CPPFLAGS I must do that. And the must is there only because of dpkg-buildflags. I would not have to do that if dpkg was not setting CPPFLAGS. having to split CPPFLAGS after the fact for build systems that do support it would be extremely annoying. I agree. It may not be a good idea in general. But in our case the -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 option does not have to be split, so it's not a problem. After all CPPFLAGS without CFLAGS are only used by ./configure tests, and this option does nothing for them. _FORTIFY_SOURCE *is* a preprocesssor macro, you just need to grep for it in /user/include/ [...] try including stdio.h for example and setting an optimization level 0 in the preprocessor call. Right, my bad. When I checked that on my machine I did: $ cpp test.cpp | md5sum $ cpp -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 test.cpp | md5sum $ g++ -O2 -c test.cpp md5sum test.o $ g++ -O2 -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 -c test.cpp md5sum test.o But running `cpp -O2 ...` actually makes the difference. In my defence I can only say that this option is not documented in `man cpp`. Looks like -O2 is a preprocessor option too. No, as per above, and there's no workaround here, just different build system conventions. Yes. There're different system conventions. But still dpkg-buildflags should do something. Currently it sets: CFLAGS, CXXFLAGS, FFLAGS, LDFLAGS and CPPFLAGS. Why it sets just these? Why doesn't it set, for example CMAKE_C_FLAGS, or QMAKE_CXXFLAGS instead? It's because those are the most popular flags, right? All of them are supported by most build systems. All of them except CPPFLAGS. Currently autotools packages must write rules in one way, while packages of other build systems must do it in another. Why? Why dpkg prefers one build system to the others? It's really trivial to make dpkg compatible with almost all the build systems around by just dropping CPPFLAGS. This will make packaging easier. Why not do that? PS: Bugs must be fixed, not documented, IMO. There's no bug here. There's a workaround. It means there's a bug being workarounded. Since it's about dpkg and cmake, the bug is either in dpkg, or cmake or somewhere between them. Since it happens for other build systems, I tend to think it's in dpkg. I'm not telling that nobody must ever use CPPFLAGS. As Russ Allbery wrote it's necessary to use it if you have std-includes in an unusual location. What I suggest is to not use CPPFLAGS when it's not needed. To make it shorter. Dpkg-buildflags must set -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 somewhere. There're options: 1. Put -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 to CPPFLAGS (autotools) advantages: none? disadvantages: makes [cq]make packaging a little bit harder 2. Put -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 to CFLAGS/CXXFLAGS advantages: makes any packaging a little bit easier disadvantages: none? 3. Put _FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 to DEFINES (qmake) advantages: none? disadvantages: makes autotools packaging a little bit harder 4. Put it to any other variable XXX advantages: none? disadvantages: makes any packaging a little bit harder I'm for #2. :) The it belongs to CPPFLAGS thing is neither advantage nor disadvantage, because it also belongs to CMAKE_C_FLAGS, CMAKE_CXX_FLAGS, QMAKE_CXXFLAGS or even qmake's DEFINES option, and probably a lot of other variables of different build systems around. It does not mean that dpkg-buildflags should set them all. Also if you consider it belongs to CPPFLAGS an important argument, you should move -O2 to CPPFLAGS too, because -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 is a preprocessor option only together with -O2, it does nothing without it (see above). :) Yes, it belongs to CPPFLAGS is a good argument when you're trying to convince someone, but it's not really an advantage, it does not make anything better. Re: Best Practices on testing-proposed-updates vs unstable vs experimental after testing freeze
Hi, Regarding your question, it is recommended to do as follow during freeze: unstable: any version that you would like to hit testing soon, so it's the version that Release Team agreed (or likely) to unblock it. experimental: any version that won't make its way to unstable, including usual experimental stuff as well as things that Release Team aren't likely to have in testing during the freeze, for example significant upstream releases. testing-proposed-updates: only use it when you haven't followed above suggestions, that is to say you have a higher version number in unstable which won't migrate to testing, in the case you can't upload your fix for the testing version to unstable as usual and you have to upload it to testing-pu instead. Because packages uploaded to testing-proposed-updates are unlikely to have so much testing as in unstable, it's discouraged to be used unless necessary (versioning issues). So please make sure that unstable is only for versions actually destined for testing. :-) -- Regards, Aron Xu -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-devel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Not to be seen as uncool, I'm proposing a bug squashing party somewhere in Dublin, Ireland at a mutually agreed date and time. That is a great idea! There does not seem to be much local Debian activity, despite the number of DDs living here, and this is a good way to help revert that, and help the release! Have you thought of a place, or talked with anybody about that? I'm thinking the TOG might be a good place. How many people can it accommodate? Are there fees? Network/WiFi? Food/drink? I'm just canvassing for support right now, as I don't know the Debian procedure for doing this - or even if there is one. I'd participate and/or help organise. Yes to both - it's my first BSP. One of the topics/issues/bugs I hope to address is getting my open source projects in SourceForge knocked into shape for acceptance into Debian. I don't know if that meets the criteria for party - maybe a shindig or a hootenanny. I think BSPs usually focus on fixing problems for packages already in Debian, specially RC bugs. But nobody would discourage you from working on your packages and getting help from other people doing so! Tincho. Debian BSP, Dublin, Ireland, Cork alternative
Hi there. I got into a delete-those-emails frenzy earlier and assumed I could read them on Debians mailing list. This is true only if someone doesn't mail me personally, which I now realise happened wrt. an email suggesting it be hosted in Cork. Please send the email to me or the list again - there's no need to pick between Dublin and Cork - why not have both? If they're at different times then more can go to both. If they're on at the same time then we can try some video-conferencing software as long as it doesn't cost anything to use and is easy to set up - open source if possible. There is one thing though, for some reason it takes much more bandwidth when updating the index then my previous way. [...] Previously when I was using a single mirror, most of the time the diff between two runs was at the most 750 kB in the index update run. I can recall there is something call .pdiff which made it easier and smaller to have the index updated. For some reason, there no longer are pdiffs for stable, so it has to download the whole files on every update. Hi there. I've got a Samsung NP-RF711-S07UK laptop - it's so new that Samsungs own website doesn't list it. Here's a link with product specs: http://www.elaraonline.co.uk/productdetail.aspx?productcode=ECE2391461 Anyway, it's got back-light+hot-keys+fan control issues. It turns out that even the latest kernel linux-3.5-rc4 doesn't have a DMI table entry for it in drivers/platform/x86/samsung-laptop.c. # dmidecode -s system-product-name RF511/RF411/RF711 It would be great if any kernel developers could be present at the BSP - it's a great laptop and sorting out support for it would be a sweet bug to fix.
