From the outside (non-DD, lurking for 15 years or so) the FTP Team
appears to be adamant that the current process is The Only True Way to
do copyright review.

Without a clear statement from the FTP Team that alternative copyright
review processes might even be considered there is very little
motivation for anyone to even start working on it.

The start could be something as simple as "we (the FTP Team) will
prioritise packages in NEW that have at least $number of reviews from
other DDs".

Custom header would work, but it's sufficient to add it as yet another
pseudo-header, together with Packgage: etc. ;)

An idea would be to use[1] and promote it as security support for
testing, also outside the freeze, e.g. for the cases where a security
relevant update via unstable would take more than one day or so to
migrate.

This reminds me of this proposal:

As far as I recall it also had the codename "bob" (after RollerBob), but
I can't find the reference right now.

Yeah, learned that the hard way. SATA (or better) is a must for any
storage application (NAS, etc.).

SATA-to-USB adapters can have other subtle side effects as well, like
messing the detection of 4K blocks. Apparently SMART could also be an
issue, though it seemed to work for me.

Any of the boards from pine64.org should do and as far as I know have
quite good support (i.e. there are Debian Installer images for them) and
all are 64 bit ;)

The PINE A64+ (2 GB RAM) is very stable for me, unless I put significant
load on the USB connection (specifically *heavy* writing to an external
HDD in a powered enclosure), but it could also be a power issue.

Because of this experience I'd avoid anything using micro USB for power
(persons who know much more than me about that generally recommend 12V
barrel connector, though Type-C is probably fine as well).

For a cheap board now I'd probably go for a ROCK64 (USB3 instead of
USB2), or even a RockPro64 (better CPU, PCIe, unfortunately limited to 4
GB RAM).

Heating could also be an issue under load, so you should consider
getting at least a passive heat sink as well, just in case.

Andrei

An RFP means you are requesting someone to package it. The best you can
do is to make it as easy as possible for potential packagers to decide
whether it's worth looking into it.

Especially the information about the license and programming language is
very useful for this.

In this particular case it could make sense to Cc: the KDE Team as they
might be interested in picking it up themselves.

Also, the correct severity is "wishlist" (just a cosmetic detail).

The "RFP" is a tag meant to go in the subject / bug title instead of
"TAG" (which I forgot to fix, doing it with this message).

In addition to the above, especially since this is an RFP, the report
should contain more information about the package, like the upstream
URL, license, etc. (see the link I provided below). This makes it easier
for a potential contributor that is looking into packaging it.

Hope this explains,
Andrei

Possibly a consequence of the portability problem, advice on debian-user
will almost always[1] use 'find' whenever the problem / solution
involves searching for files.

For myself, I abandoned 'locate' as soon as I learned 'find', even of
low power systems with storage on SD cards or connected via USB2.

As far as I recall that entry refers to CDs with the entire non-free

Just an additional point, one of the first and most common advice on
debian-user in case some hardware is not working properly (or at all) is
to check for missing firmware, the most common being network cards and
display adapters.

It probably belongs in the FAQ...

Well, Network Manager and systemd-networkd are completely different

In this case you could prepare a package yourself and ask for a sponsor
to upload it, see https://mentors.debian.net/sponsors/

If you do so please retitle this "bug" to ITP (Intent To Package).

At least for me, on buster, it was also necessary to stop
wpa_supplicant.service before restarting Network Manager.

I'm guessing the wpa_supplicant service should also be 'disable'd in
order to prevent it from starting at next reboot (didn't test, I
disabled it anyway).

+1

While not a developer I'll dare share some my changes as well.

At least 'linux' and 'screen' should be added to /etc/skel/.bashrc

# set a fancy prompt (non-color, unless we know we "want" color)
case "$TERM" in
xterm-color|*-256color) color_prompt=yes;;
rxvt*) color_prompt=yes;;
linux) color_prompt=yes;;
screen*) color_prompt=yes;;
esac

Let's use packages in the distribution whenever possible ;)
I don't recall where I got the prompt command from...

# add git branch information to avoid commiting to 'master' by mistake
if [[ -e /usr/lib/git-core/git-sh-prompt ]]; then
. /usr/lib/git-core/git-sh-prompt
fi
GIT_PS1_SHOWUPSTREAM="verbose"
#PROMPT_COMMAND='__git_ps1
"${debian_chroot:+($debian_chroot)}\[\033[01;32m\]\u@\h\[\033[00m\]:\[\033[01;34m\]\w\[\033[00;32m\]"
 "\[\033[00m\]\n└─> \$ "'
PROMPT_COMMAND='__git_ps1
"${debian_chroot:+($debian_chroot)}\[\033[01;32m\]\u@\h\[\033[00m\]:\[\033[01;34m\]\w\[\033[00;32m\]"
 "\[\033[00m\]\$ "'

BTW, I prefer 'W' to 'w' (it's my only change below) :)

if [ "$color_prompt" = yes ]; then

PS1='${debian_chroot:+($debian_chroot)}\[\033[01;32m\]\u@\h\[\033[00m\]:\[\033[01;34m\]\W\[\033[00m\]\$
 '
else
PS1='${debian_chroot:+($debian_chroot)}\u@\h:\w\$ '
fi
unset color_prompt force_color_prompt

'--human-readable' makes for a nicer 'ls -l' in the age of MiB, GiB
files.

Maybe grep --color should be enabled by default as well?

# enable color support of ls and also add handy aliases
if [ -x /usr/bin/dircolors ]; then
test -r ~/.dircolors && eval "$(dircolors -b ~/.dircolors)" || eval
"$(dircolors -b)"
alias ls='ls --color=auto --human-readable'
#alias dir='dir --color=auto'
#alias vdir='vdir --color=auto'

alias grep='grep --color=auto'
#alias fgrep='fgrep --color=auto'
#alias egrep='egrep --color=auto'
fi

Hope this is useful to someone,

Beware of #721793, though I'm guessing the reportbug maintainer is aware

Would there be cases where the "restricted" unit file is using options
not present in the "unrestricted" unit file, and if yes, is that case
worth supporting?

It seems to me like a unit file to SysV translator should just ignore
the options it doesn't support, so it wouldn't be necessary to have two
different unit files.

1. Delete the contents of /etc (all of it)
2. If a package doesn't find its "stuff" in /etc it regenerates it from
defaults.

In my understanding of the issue it only affects users that already have
a source in their lists, but the source changes.

It shouldn't have any impact on buster users that upgrade to bullseye
*after* the release, because they are adding a new source.

The biggest impact at bullseye's release will be on buster users,
because buster will change from stable to oldstable.

It might also have some impact to buster users upgrading to bullseye
before the release, however, by then most package managers should be
updated to deal with this correctly.

The DocBook Authoring and Publishing Suite (DAPS) fills this gap by
providing a tool set for easy creation and publication of DocBook sources on
Linux. DAPS lets you create HTML (incl. webhelp), PDF, EPUB, man pages, and
other formats with a single command.

It automatically takes care of validating and filtering (profiling) your
sources and automatically converts images into a format best suited for the
output format. Furthermore one can easily create profiled source tarballs
 for translation or review.

DAPS supports authors by providing linkchecker, validator, spellchecker, and
editor macros. It is perfectly suited to manage large documentation projects
with multiple authors using the DAPS docmanager.

It's also not the worst idea to remove stuff from third party
repositories before upgrading and only install them again after the
upgrade. This way you can sure that they aren't interfering (something
which can't be prevented and just works most of the time because you are
lucky) and you can recheck that the 3rd party repository is still
maintained/supported or if this or a comparable package appeared in
Debian. If not, you should think about getting it into Debian…

That has been the standard recommendation in the Release Notes since at
least Lenny.

Wait, you are asking for a discussion about the advantages and
disadvantages of systemd, and in the same paragraph say you are about to
leave Debian because of exactly this?

In any case, your question is off-topic on debian-devel, please reask it
 on debian-user.

This has been (and still is) discussed on -user as well, so you might
want to read the archives before reposting there.

so here we are, after the freeze, and systemd stubbornly rejects
to start lightdm, my default display manager, and in turn tries
to start lxdm, which does not work because it is not selected as

Is there *any* way to *force* systemd to start lightdm ...?

I have a hunch the bug is actually in lxdm (specifically the service
file). It should be simple to verify:

- purge lxdm (remove might do it as well, but just for good measure)
- reconfigure lightdm (to make sure display-manager.service symlink
  points to lightdm.service)

Kind regards,
Andrei

 Dear Maintainer,

Telegram Desktop is the unoffical desktop client for the telegram messaging.
Telegram is a secured and privacy platform like what's app, but better.
Have a look on telegra.org for the description of API, Protocols and so on.
There is a link to tdesktop.org which is the unofficial client version
which can be installed for linux32 and linux64 bit.

The source is available on GitHub: https://github.com/telegramdesktop/tdesktop
The software is distributed under the license GPLv3.

Last Version from GitHub is 0.6.6.

As it happens, there's an obvious way to do that: specify the package(s)
you don't want removed on the aptitude command line.

It's also possible to do it in interactive mode.
