Re: Collaborative maintenance of mime-support (was Re: Using FreeDesktop MIME entries directly in mime-support).

2012-07-17 Thread Brian White

Lastly, I would like to thank Brian for his impressively 16-years long
 work on
mime-support. Brian, feel free to stay among the uploaders !

Thanks. I wish I had the energy to make some of the much-needed changes
but I'm just not involved with the project enough these days to have a good
feel for how it should be improved.

Make it great!

Re: Fixing the mime horror ini Debian

I ran whatever command it is and chose whatever option (orphan/wnpp/etc)
was appropriate.

The computer on which I did Debian work is sitting in a container in Berne
awaiting shipment to Montreal so it'll be many weeks before I can access it
again.

 Dear Brian,

I could not find the WNPP bug orphaning mime-support. Can you or somebody
 else
 submit one ?

I hope that this change of maintainer will result in the transfer the
 source
package in a VCS and have it maintained by a team.

 Have a nice day,

  1. Rewrite xdg-utils so that it is robust and always works. Instead of
relying on desktop environments, it should do the needed work by
itself. Currently it's something of a hack, especially when running in
generic mode. It should probably be written in another language than
shell (e.g. Perl, Python, C). A nicer user interface for the command
  line wouldn't hurt either.

  2. Make all other packages either use xdg-utils or follow the
  freedesktop.org MIME specs.

Yes, I also think this is a good plan.

Relying on existing desktop tools is too difficult. They get deprecated
(for example, gnome-open has been replaced by gvfs-open) or they cannot
be adapted easily because maintainers usually don't care about those
corner use cases. For example, gvfs-open does not wait for the viewer to
terminate, this makes difficult for mailers to pass a temporary
 file. See:
  - https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=652262
  - https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=678504

Once you get a working xdg-open, you can get a compatibility layer for
 the mailcap stuff:
   */*; xdg-open '%s'; test=test -n $DISPLAY

 Or something more sensible like:
   image/gif; xdg-open -t image/gif '%s'; test=test -n $DISPLAY
   image/png; xdg-open -t image/png '%s'; test=test -n $DISPLAY
   [...]

The remaining problem is defining the priority of such entries compared
to entries inserted by packages still supporting mailcap.

Afaict ssh-keygen from OpenSSH can do that:
-i This option will read an unencrypted private (or public) key file
in SSH2-compatible format and print an OpenSSH compatible private
(or public) key to stdout. ssh-keygen also reads the `SECSH

 several commercial SSH implementations.

unencrypted probably refers to empty passphrase.

Thanks for the tip! I figured it was probably available somewhere; I just
hadn't had a chance to really go looking.

There's still the problem of why the anonymous-ftp upload cannot find my
GPG key even though it's in the debian keyring.

SCP doesn't work (I suspect) because I'm using the SSH2 package once
  found in non-free.

Oh, ssh2 is broken, yes. Try 'scp -1', perhaps?

I don't keep ssh1 installed for security reasons. sigh

I mentioned this (and the reasons why) some time back.

Care to reiterate? I can't remember, I'm afraid. However, as the OpenSSH
co-maintainer I didn't know that there were still any reasons to use
ssh2 over OpenSSH. (Before anyone mentions the chroot patch, that was
never in a version of ssh2 in the archive.)

The problem is that we use SSH2 at work for remote access. I don't want
to switch to OpenSSH because it is missing the ability to require multiple
authentication methods (e.g. private key AND password) which I want to
make sure that having one stolen is not sufficient for an attacker to
gain access to our network. I have a wishlist bug filed for this.

I've avoided changing to OpenSSH at home because I'm unsure how to convert
the keys from the SSH2 format to the OpenSSH format.

Re: [cjwatson@debian.org: Re: Fwd: Processing offerret_3.0-2_i386.changes]

2003-09-25 Thread Brian White
The queue daemon can no longer handle PGP 2.x keys; I don't know why
and since a) the number of developers still using these kind of keys
for uploads can be counted on the fingers of a mutilated hand, b)
there are alternative methods of uploads available to the few who do,
 c) queued is in perl and d) has plenty of other more vicious bugs, I
haven't done anything about it. If anyone else cares to fix it, feel
free to send me a tested patch.

I've converted my key to GPG, though. At least, I use GPG to sign my
packages and my key is in the Debian keyserver. Is there something more
I need to do?

 * Brian White [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2003-09-20 07:37]:
Neither SCP nor anonymous-FTP methods work and I want to get that
  fixed.

  SSH works. SCP doesn't.

Well, it works for everyone else. So it would be good if you'd find
out why it doesn't work for you. In the meantime, you can put your
signed upload somewhere and someone can simply upload it to ftp-master
on your behalf. If you ask on debian-devel@lists.debian.org, I'm sure
 someone will do that.

SCP doesn't work (I suspect) because I'm using the SSH2 package once
found in non-free. I mentioned this (and the reasons why) some time back.

What I've been doing is using SSH to get to ftp-master and the wget to
fetch the files from my machine at home. I could use the tar method
you gave, though.

What I would _like_ to do is use the anonymous-ftp method of dupload.
However, I get tons of errors from the queue daemon about it not being
able to find my GPG key. This is what I would like to get fixed.

Fwd: Processing of ferret_3.0-2_i386.changes

2003-09-01 Thread Brian White
What do I have to do to fix this problem? My key is valid, has been
signed, and was uploaded to the keyserver via gpg --send-keys.

Why do I continue to get these messages? The only way I can upload
packages is to use SSH to connect to ftp-master and then use wget
to fetch the various files from my home machine.

Thanks!

Debian 2.1 Release Candidate

1999-02-23 Thread Brian White
In accordance with the plan published last week, Slink should now
be in an unchanging state. Packages will be accepted only if
absolutely necessary. Bugs that still exist will probably be released.

All architectures should start making sure their distributions are up
to date with the others.

Stabalization of Slink is still planned for Friday (Thusday night?)
at 00:00 GMT.

Re: List of bugs that *must* be fixed before releasing Slink

1999-02-01 Thread Brian White
You know, I don't see this as grave. It means that a user can
effectively export to the world any file readable by www-data. In
general, this means only things that can be read by public. So,
the user can't intentionally export anything that he/she couldn't already
  do by other means.

But there is a big difference between the local public that you might
trust and the big evil world outside your system.. I see two solutions
two this: enforce SymLinksIfOwnerMatch or don't allow userdirs.

The problem comes with unintentional exports... Well, it's a bug. I
don't see it as being a security hole.

You only hide information but don't disable any security issues, so it
is indeed not a real security hole in the canonical sense of the term.

I suppose that depends on what you make available. If a user created
a link to /etc within their public_html, you could export some pretty
bad stuff, especially if not using shadow passwords.

That's pretty unlikely, though.

   It's important but I wouldn't call this one release-critical.

I looked at that one time, but I wasn't sure. Is it possible that during
an upgrade to stable we get dpkg and dpkglib to be out-of-step?

I don't think so; when dpkg upgrades itself and replaces the library it
still has the old library opened via a mmap() which means it won't
suddenly start using another incompatible library. This becomes a real
issue only when the library is split into its own package and the two
 are upgraded independantly.

Hmmm... If things were installed by hand (dpkg --install dpkglib...)
or if install were to fail between the two packages, then you could have
a problem where the install tool doesn't function, right?

Did you ever think that exporting vital databases that are under cgi
control would be a serious security bug? And what about apache using
the mod_roaming module, which saves netscape preferences, _security_
 certificates, bookmarks, and preferences.

This doesn't even count directories protected by .htpasswd auth whose
files can easily be compromised, and even the .htpasswd file itself can
be exported by linking it as a .html file, exposing all the excrypted
password information, which may be the same passwords as the system.

This is a serious security hole, we need to close before release.

I understand. My point, however, was that anyone who exports those things
on purpose could just as easily copy the file, ftp it, email it, or
whatever. Plugging a whole in the side of a boat doesn't help when the
boat has no bottom.

Right. But since libdpkg is still a part of the dpkg package we
shouldn't need to worry at the moment.

Oh... Somewhere I got the impression that they were two distinct packages.
If that's not the case, then I would say it isn't release-critical as an

Re: Getting Slink compatible with Linux-2.2.0

1999-01-27 Thread Brian White
In my more than honest opinion, I think util-linux 2.9g should be included
in slink. Developments in the computer business are going fast, as everyone
knows, and on the day slink will get released, I think a lot of people who
are going to upgrade to slink, also want to have the newest kernel, 2.2.
That's why slink should be compatible with Linux-2.2, otherwise it is quite
a bit outdated at the moment of release. There is a major difference between
not being compatible with the latest major kernel release, and not including
the latest patchlevel of some software thingie.

A stable release is always out of date. If you want leading edge, use
unstable. We release stable so people have a known set that works
together. It isn't an attempt to package the end-all and be-all of
current Linux stuff.

1999-01-27 Thread Brian White
Ok, so if we really want a Debian 2.1 that is 100% kernel 2.2.x
compatible it needs this package to be included in frozen.
I've just uploaded it in Incoming/ 10 minutes ago.
Non-developers can also access it at http://www.ldsol.com/~vincent/
(NB: there are _2_ binary packages to install: util-linux and mount.)

We also need working DHCP and BOOTP support in Slink otherwise those
people cannot use 2.2 kernels - potatos DHCP package has support for 2.2
(and 2.0) but I don't know about bootp.

We do not officially support the 2.2 kernel in Slink. People who want to
use 2.2 will have to compile it themselves and may have to upgrade some
packages.

We do not officially support the 2.2 kernel in Slink. People who want to
use 2.2 will have to compile it themselves and may have to upgrade some
  packages.

But what about shipping an extra directory support_2.2 which
contains the kernel packages and the necessary utilities together
with the Debian CDs. This will not break the Debian policy but
gives every user the chance to try it with its own risk and avoid
downloading the things over slow connections.

To do so would indicate that Slink officially supports v2.2 of the kernel,
which it does not.

Re: getting kernel 2.2 into slink

1999-01-23 Thread Brian White
Including the source package I could be convinced of. At least then
people have to think about what they're doing before causing potential
problems.

This think about what they are doing thing is precisely one of the
reasons the extra priority does exist.

According to this it should be fine to include it as an extra package.

Perhaps that is a reason for extra, but it's really pointless. If it
can be installed, people will install it regardless of its priority. I'd
bet most people don't even think about a package's priority, largely
because many don't know what the priorities mean.

In such case (even if the user install everything, including extra
packages) I think there should be no problem if the package is a
package containing just the kernel source (because source code, as such,
 is always harmless).

Yup. I don't have any worries about that. My small concern is people
expecting it to be supported because it came with the distribution. As
I've said, I don't have very strong convictions about a source package.

Disclamers are of marginal use. It will appear as installable and tell

Installing a kernel 2.2 source package just dumps a tar file in /usr/src. I
don't see how this could break a system. Actually building and installing
that source package is more difficult than pushing an elevator button (even
 with kernel-package ;-)

But keep in mind we're also talking about a _source_package_.

Actually, when I wrote that message we were talking about an image package.

Would anyone object if kernel 2.2 were packaged up at least as a
kernel-source package for slink? 2.0.3x would remain slink's default kernel,
would be used on the boot disks, etc, but this would let people get ahold of
kernel 2.2 easily on a debian cdrom, and it would let us say that debian
supports 2.2. (I was at a LUG meeting the other day, and I was asked about
this very thing a couple of times; people obviously care about it.)

Not that it matters, really. My only worry is that if somebody compiles
the kernel, they will expect it to work. I think it's best to leave 2.2
completely in unstable. It's still available there and will have better
support.

I'de really like to see a kernel-image too, atleast for the non-i386 ports
to use. The 2.2 kernels work much better for them than the 2.0.3x kernels,
and requires less (usually none) patching to get them to compile. For
example, the 2.0.35 sparc-kernel patch in slink right now is 2.8 megs
(compressed). I've been able to compile straight from the pristine source
for 2.1.128 to 2.1.132 (one small header fix in 132). I'm going to try the
2.2.0pre9 and see if I get the same results.

No. We had enough problems upgrading from 2.0.35 to 2.0.36. This would
be a major change and have corresponding reprocussions. I'm sure it's
very stable, but it will have incompatibilities.

No-one's saying this would be the default kernel. I think including a kernel
image would be nice... but if that is too much I'd at least like to see the
 source package get in.

I understand what you're saying, but default or not doesn't make any
difference. Both will show up in dselect and it would be trivial for
someone to install the new kernel... and then wonder why things don't
work.

Since it is assured that some packages will have to be patched by a
user that wants to use the new kernel, making those users go through
a little bit more effort to get the new kernel is more than offset by
reducing the amount of problems encountered by other users.

I think it's not a big deal if there are big disclaimers attached that
slink is not a 2.2 targetted dist.

Disclamers are of marginal use. It will appear as installable and tell
people to install me just as an elevator buttun tells people push me.
Adding a disclaimer is like taking a door with a big, pull me handle

There is good reason to have new kernels in unstable, but we're
talking stable, here.

 Heh, thats the idea. :-)

Little things that few notice, apparently -- I would've sworn slink
and 2.2.0-final work perfectly until someone pointed out that
/usr/sbin/procinfo complains. Been running 2.1.1xx in production
 with frozen for months.

People swore to me that 2.0.36 would drop in without a problem. They
were wrong.

I'd say at least include a source package for whatever 2.2.0 is
available at the moment of release, so we get the bragging rights.
:-) A deb would be even more impressive.

Including the source package I could be convinced of. At least then
people have to think about what they're doing before causing potential
problems.

Brian Since it is assured that some packages will have to be patched
Brian by a user that wants to use the new kernel, making those users
Brian go through a little bit more effort to get the new kernel is
Brian more than offset by reducing the amount of problems encountered
 Brian by other users.

It may be hopeless fantasy, but I'd like to believe our users aren't
 this helpless.

I'll share that fantasy. As linux becomes more and more mainstream, it's
going to be even more difficult to dream. Of course, the reality is that
most users don't need the 2.2 kernel anyway.

According to this it should be fine to include it as an extra package.

Perhaps that is a reason for extra, but it's really pointless. If it

bet most people don't even think about a package's priority, largely

Brian, will you please consider to do a ftp.debian.org bug hunting *before*
 doing any deep freeze?

The ftp maintainers will have to take care of that. I'm not sure if Guy
shares the [EMAIL PROTECTED] mail with his helpers. They're pretty
good about getting things done usually.

Some bugs reported two months ago have not been fixed yet. This means that
 either:

 * They are difficult to fix (unlikely).
 * There are not enough ftp.debian.org maintainers (I don't know).
 * The release manager does not care about ftp.debian.org bugs (I hope not).
 * Some other reason (Which one?).

Could somebody explain me, why, oh why, do we have to wait more than two
months for trivial ftp.debian.org bugs to be fixed?

What do you think we should do with the Gnome stuff?

The Gnome 0.30 stuff is still under rather heavy development. The
current packages in Slink are pretty much alpha-quality. Lots of
things don't work. It sounds like there will probably be a 1.0
release coming up in a few months that will be thoroughly tested and
 stable.

I'm not sure if it's a good idea to release them as a part of a
stable distribution, as they really aren't. There aren't any
guarantees that the stuff that runs today is going to run tomorrow.

I would agree with you. They should probably be removed from slink
at the time of the freeze. Do you have a list of these packages?

There is one, MAJOR, huge, massive, 'program' which egcs will not

 Any suggestions?

Yeah. Ship kernel v2.1 if v2.0 won't work. I don't have a problem with

Great news. But uploading a *.deb package without source?? I think this will
be rejected!? And you mean uploading to unstable, not to experimental?

Oh, I see what you mean. Personally, I don't mind if the source exists,
too. I'd rather that all arches that can run of the 2.0 kernel ship with
that, but having the source available for the 2.1 kernel shouldn't cause
any problems.

in the 2.1 release of Debian? Thanks!

PowerPC has more or less given up on making 2.1. We're moving well,
but I'm of the inclination we shouldn't release until we have a truly
stabilized libc - or at least until we're a lot closer.

Right, powerpc shouldn't go in right now. We have more then 200 packages
uncompiled (many maintainer doesn't response for bug lists!!!).

Okay, thanks.

We need a 2.1.x kernel source package, which isn't available for debian.

I don't see why you couldn't create one just for the powerpc arch. Either
way, v2.2 of the kernel should be available before v2.2 of Debian.

Brian and the other arch maintainer with 2.1 kernels: what about to
have the linux-cvs tree (as a debian package) in experimental?? This
will help. Linux-2.1.125 is very near on linux-2.2 !!

I'm afraid I don't understand. What do you mean about the linux-cvs tree?
