The same way egcs 1.1b becomes gcc 2.91.53.  The one is an interface
number and the other an internal version.

which have not been recompiled in a week or so...

Daniel Jacobowitz (drow) is working on this IIRC, 

Personally, I'd rather see the packages that still depend on libstdc++2.8
recompiled for libstdc++2.9 .
