Re: Drop usplash in Squeeze? Move to plymouth?
On 20:47 Wed 19 May , Petter Reinholdtsen wrote: Should we drop usplash from our package lists in Squeeze? It is as far as I can see dead upstream, as Ubuntu moved to plymouth as their boot progress bar, to get flicker free boot. It is also the cause of many problems with the video setup on several hardware models, and it would be nice to avoid such problems in Squeeze. I guess we should investigate plymouth, but I doubt I will find time to do it any time soon. plymouth seems a good choice. Some times is needed to do a debian-edu theme, I got a look about how it works and it is not that simple... There is 4 or 5 existing themes where you can directly replace the default logo by the debian-edu logo. I have done a package for my goals and setted it up for the custom debian Im working on for my company. If you want to give a try: == 0. Install v86d package. 1. /etc/default/grub Replace GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=... by GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash nomodeset video=uvesafb:mode_option=1280x1024-24,mtrr=3,scroll=ywrap Replace #GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480 by GRUB_GFXMODE=1280x1024 Notice that grub2 supports different resolutions so you can put there a list and grub2 will choose the first working one. (debian-edu grub background image should be updated) 2. /etc/initramfs-tools/modules Add a line containing: uvesafb mode_option=1280x1024-24 mtrr=3 scroll=ywrap 3. echo FRAMEBUFFER=y | sudo tee /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash 4. sudo update-grub2 sudo update-initramfs -u Now you have the default setted theme. sudo /usr/sbin/plymouth-set-default-theme --list (list available themes) sudo /usr/sbin/plymouth-set-default-theme THEME (change theme) sudo update-initramfs -u (apply to initramfs) === Plymouth is currently in sid but build fine under squeeze. So I have rebuilt it on squeeze with a small modification in debian/local by giving another logo (default is debian-logo.png.uue), update debian/rules for decode my new logo and update debian/local/plymouth.hook to do the copy of this new logo. Future of OLPC
Hi, As you know, there is no really OLPC team in debian, and we are quite 10 people having an OLPC board so, it's time to do something.[1] I cc this mail each people listed in [1] Then I contacted the emdebian team [2] if we can join their team to get debian working on this board. There were some answer to my mail and it's really positive. Here is the thread : [3] So, I think we could join the emdebian team. If you want to join, please send a mail to wookey([EMAIL PROTECTED]) with your wanted login and your ssh key. If you think, it's not a good idea or have an other opinion, feel free to tell us. I believe there is a lot of hard work left to do before they will be ready to go into Etch, and unless someone (I'm not going to work on it) start doing the work, the packages will be missing in Debian. You are right, there is a lot of work left before they will be ready. The bad point is that Im alone working on this packaging but I will start the work of getting them into debian this week !! There were questions about automatically building the French extra CD on administrator.s.n. I'm all for it. I suspect the easiest approach to make that happen is to upload the packages to the debian-edu repository and list them as recommends and suggests in the debian-edu tasks. This will make the packages show up on the second CD now being built for Etch. We can then call this CD the French extra CD. :) Ok, I will list them in the debian-edu task. And if we are able to trim down the content on the first CD even further, we will get the French packages on that CD instead. Should we try to make a DVD as well? The french addon CD take about 450Mb. So using two CDs is enough. But I like the idea of having a DVD :) French team, please focus on this. Re: italc and other packages
Hi Hi Steffen, italc was discussed in the .org proposal thread, but i like the discussion of this thread and i don't want to disturb it so I start a new (small) one :) Some of you wonder why italc is under the maintainance of Debian Edu Developers . Well Florian Ragwitz and me debianized it and we wanted to keep it under svn and we worked on it, because there was a real demand for it by many administrators (I hate to use it as a big brother software, i like to use it for teaching, so please keep this in mind). So we decided to put ourselves as uploaders and use Debian Edu Developers for maintainer-field. Well we can change this in the next upload. What is your opinion? Should we also maintain general applications, as we did with kgeography and italc, or shall we only maintain skolelinux native packages with Debian Edu Developers??? Debian Edu Developpers can maintain both Debian and Debian-Edu applications. I personally prefer to have the chance to decide it during the debianization, maybe it is really useful for skolelinux (and of course for debian) so we can maintain it under Debian Edu Developers. But i am only one of the whole community, so please give some statements. I think if a software will be used mainly with skolelinux the field should be something like Debian-Edu team as italc : Maintainer: Debian Edu Developers debian-edu@lists.debian.org But if it is a software which will be used both in Debian and Debian-edu and moreover if it's a small package, only one person should be in this field. Re: the .org proposal or join forces
On 10:41 Wed 07 Dec , Steffen Joeris wrote: Hi As discussed on irc I start a thread about the .org proposal. Ok at first a short summary. As all of you know we are organized in local teams. There is a french team, a german team, and so on Well there are reasons for that. Some tasks have to be done alone (for example a german translation). But there are many tasks especially in the development where we have to stick together. Of course we are all working on developer.skolelinux.no and so the developers are already working together. But nevertheless we can stick more together with the .org proposal, means: What about working more on www.skolelinux.org and doing blogs on planet.skolelinux.org, getting email accounts on @skolelinux.org and having a space called people.skolelinux.org . So we can provide general information of the development of Skolelinux/Debian-Edu there (of course in english). hmm, that's very interesting and of course I agree with you. I think that each team don't really know what the others do, thus maybe some stuffs will be done twice, and that's the bad way. If we agree there is an other topic which has to be discussed here: As a few of you know in the german team we started a process called New Member Process were we take care of the new member and see that we can integrate him/her and that he/she can get the work he/she wants to do. (It would be nice if someone else from the german team can describe the process here!!!). Yes, I think so. But I hope not so hard than becoming official debian developper ;) To summarize the intention of the .org-proposal in one sentence let me say: We are one project and we should stick together and join forces and we have to show it, so let the skolelinux development become stronger with that. I hope that I can make it clear what the .org-proposal means and why i started this thread. Friendly, -- Xavier Oswald -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
