http://bugs.skolelinux.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1394 --- Comment #7 from Holger Levsen 2009-11-25 16:55:23 --- Al, you could try a lenny based image and see if that works better for you: http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/HowTo/TestCDinstall -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.skolelinux.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. http://bugs.skolelinux.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1394 --- Comment #6 from Al 2009-11-23 21:33:52 --- I'll keep it in mind, but that's not an answer to any of my questions to issues: i.e. STANDALONE re. "Debconf on localhost: Some errors were found in installation. error: status=0x05 {Drive Ready Seek Complete Data request}, error: status..." AND nothing installs w/ the Radeon 7000 Again, please present the REAL minimum hardware requirments (including whether there are other video cards to avoid other than nVidea). http://bugs.skolelinux.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1394 --- Comment #5 from Oded Naveh 2009-11-23 08:03:31 --- (In reply to comment #4) > Once again: > I tested SERVER and what you call STANDALONE > (Neither WORKSTATION nor THIN-CLIENT were tested... > > Now that that's perfectly clear... Note that the main server profile does not install any GUI, as Holger pointed out. If you wish to have GUI, either select the main-server profile _with_ workstation profile (together), or install whatever you wish later using apt/aptitude. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.skolelinux.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. [Bug 1394] Installs yield malfunctioning boot sequence
http://bugs.skolelinux.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1394 --- Comment #4 from Al 2009-11-23 04:40:49 --- Once again: I tested SERVER and what you call STANDALONE (Neither WORKSTATION nor THIN-CLIENT were tested. RE: As clarified, my initial entry mistakenly mentioned WORKSTATION instead of STANDALONE, so apply all WORKSTATION statements toward STANDALONE.) What's been outlined is: 1) Installing SERVER (Yes, selecting "Main server") encounters the error message re. "X" -never making it thru to the GUI screen logon... -ref. 2nd paragraph of intial entry: "...fails to find /etc/X11/X" 2) Installing STANDALONE does get thru to the GUI screens, however an Error window message is immediately presented. -ref. 3rd paragraph of initial entry: "Debconf on localhost: Some errors were found in installation. error: status=0x05 {Drive Ready Seek Complete Data request}, error: status..." -repeated four times. Now that that's perfectly clear... So far you have pointed toward SkoleLinux having serious trouble with Nvidia cards. Meanwhile then, I have changed my card to a VisionTek Radeon 7000 64MB PCI card. However, now over four more install attempts, neither of my two iso copies are able to install on either of two hard drives. All install attemps only hit an error during initial setup: Title: "Configuring pnm2ppa Installation step failed." Description: "An Installation step failed. You can try to run the failing item again from the menu, or skip it and choose something else. the failing step is: Select and install software." Any attempts at re-running this phase only present same error. Please advise, also on Skolelinux's minimum hardware requirements. Thanks. http://bugs.skolelinux.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1394 --- Comment #3 from Oded Naveh 2009-11-20 16:08:29 --- Hi Al, Sorry it's still not clear to me whether you chose one of workstation or thin-client server profiles to supplement the main server with GUI. > > Re.: "You need to add the workstation profile to get X." [Bug 1394] Installs yield malfunctioning boot sequence
http://bugs.skolelinux.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1394 --- Comment #2 from Al 2009-11-20 00:01:29 --- Holgar, Thanks for getting back soon. You can change the medium for this issue if you like to suit your own protocol. i.e.: Documentation or Cust Service. Note: The initial "P5" priority was an initial mistake in entry -not "inflation of severity without reason". (I initially thought the higher # was a higher priority, and as it was a crash-level issue to me...) The "Debconf on localhost" bug encountered did also say, "Consider reporting them to the Debian Edu developers." -assuming BugZilla. *** CLARIFICATION: Where I used "WORKSTATION" on the initial bug report should be "STANDALONE". *** Re.: "You need to add the workstation profile to get X." But I see this when installing the SERVER as mentioned in 'SERVER paragraph'. (This doesnt happen with STANDALONE.) i.e.: The Server install yielded the text message re, "X", while the Standalone install actually made it thru the GUI logon but presented the error message window. Meanwhile, I re-downloaded the (debian-edu-etch-amd64-i386-powerpc-DVD-3.0r1)* newest(?) DVD and tried another install, however found the same issues. I agree that video must be a major part of these problems, but it didn;t seem so at first w/ different outcomes via Server v Standalone. Perhaps I will actually try another video card -Any suggestions on Manufacturer and minimum memory? * Ref. download site used: http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Download?action=show&redirect=DebianEdu%2FGetStarted%2FDownload Yes, I read the skolelinuxtutor.pdf too but found no real specifics to help these conditions. Please advise on video Manuf. & minimums, as well as provide document reference as mentioned. Thanks. http://bugs.skolelinux.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1394 Holger Levsen changed: What|Removed |Added Severity|critical|normal Status|NEW |ASSIGNED Priority|P1 |P3 --- Comment #1 from Holger Levsen 2009-11-19 20:14:35 --- Hi Al. Thanks for your bug report! Please don't inflate the severities without reasoning. I actually have a hard time seeing what your bug report is really about. Not having X on a server profile install is expected and desired behavour. You need to add the workstation profile to get X. (Did you read the fine manual? "Debconf on localhost: Some errors were found in installation. error: status=0x05 {Drive Ready Seek Complete Data request}, error: status..." is also not an installer problem, but points to hardware issues. Also note, that in the final install these message will not be displayed. Which lead to the next question: what version did you install? woody?? etch? or lenny? which exact image from where? Last, regarding your nvidia graphic cards, I assume you are (a bit) out of luck here. Nvidia only provides binary drivers, so they are not included in the default free software only install. What we can do here, is to improve the documentation how to install those. Do you agree to turn this bug report into a request for such documentation? cheers, Holger -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.skolelinux.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug.
