closing, as the code to disable usplash is in the place and the issue with the
need for usbstick removal is documented

I've commited code to svn to remove usplash on machines with the ATI ES1000
video card. This should solve the usplash issue. The installation
issue is probably a bug in d-i and the workaround is to remove the USB stick
before grub is installed to make sure grub do not set up its stuff on the USB
stick.

I can confirm that the usb stick was in the machine when i installed grub, so
this is a possible solution of the bug

I suspect there are two problems here. One is that usplash do not work with
the video card on this machine. We can fix that by removing usplash when
installing on a machine with this PCI device.

The other is the grub issue, which I suspect is caused by the user of a USB
stick during installation. This causes grub to be installed on the wrong
device (the USB stick and not the hard disk), as documented on
http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Lenny/Installation#AnoteonsomeRAIDcontrollers
>. Viggo, can you confirm that the USB stick was in the machine when
partitioning was done?

The installation log (/var/log/installer/syslog) is not attached, so I can not
see what grub was doing when it was installing on the hard drive.

This should be filed in the Debian BTS, Debian Edu doesnt have the ressources
to fix this, unless you do it.

I do the following:

Startup it from a live cd.
Mountet up /dev/cciss/c0d0p1 to a new folder
then mount --bind /dev /"new folder"/dev
chroot into "new folder"
mount /proc; update-grub && grub-install /dev/cciss/c0d0

Grub found the kernel.

After that, reboot.

So, had to edit the boot menu from (hd1,0) to (hd0,0) and added nospalsh to
this because the screen could not start with only splash.
