kwin 4:3.2.1-1 does not start kde
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi. I apologize for bad formatting. My left arm is in a brace, so is very hard to type. I use debian unstable on a athlon xp 2600 with 512mb of ram. I have linux kernel 2.4.25 installed. I recently upgraded kde, but did not restart - later, I don't know precisely when, X crashed for unrelated reasons, so I had to restart. ~From then on, if I use gdm, kdm or startx, kwin freezes partway while starting up and does not start kde. I wind up with a blank unusable desktop. no right/left/middle clicks with mouse or keyboard keys have any effect. (besides alt-ctrl-backspace/plus/minus/Function keys which work as usual) a previous version of kwin, Version: 4:3.1.5-2 DOES work, and is how I wrote this message. I have included ps aux output of the computer while it is hung trying to start kwin 4:3.2.1-1 via gdm. If you have any idea of who I should contact for dealing with this bug, or have any additional information please contact me. I am not on this mailing list, so will not see any messages sent to this list. Bug#240288: Fake bug: It's probably not yet a good idea for kdelibs 3.2 to propagate to testing.
I'm somewhat concerned about this particular bug. If a fake bug is necessary to keep the new kdelibs out of testing, this seems to indicate that any breakages that would result from an updated kdelibs without an updated kdebase are not expressed in the package relationships, which means they will still be a problem for partial upgrade scenarios even after kdebase is ready and this bug is closed. The other possibility is that kdelibs *will* break parts of kdebase if it precedes kdebase into testing, but that this is already documented appropriately using Conflicts between the relevant binary packages, in which case this bug is redundant and can be closed. You say that having split kdebase/kdelibs version is not a good idea for various reasons. Could you please enumerate them? -- Steve Langasek postmodern programmer signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Re: Power Mgt on Laptop
Am Samstag, 3. April 2004 02:30 schrieb Sylvain Joyeux: Try mounting you partition using ext2 and use noflushd DO NOT use noflushd. Noflushd captures all write access to the hd which is a very bad idea. Even sync is captured. If you set noflushd to 30 min. and have a crash after 29 min. then you will lose 29 min of data. No journal can help you out of this. Try using the laptop mode patch which captures write activity but force flushes all data on a timeout. the lm patch actively tries to group write access to receive long spindown times. That should work even with ext3. Linux was and still is server oriented. Re: Power Mgt on Laptop
You have with laptop_mode the same problem than with noflushd (you're losing 29 minutes of data if your laptop crashes and the laptop_mode timeout is 30 minutes). Where the laptop_mode shines is in its mechanism to group write access every time the HD has to spin up (for a read for instance) -- Sylvain Joyeux
does kmail in kde 3.2 fully support procmail?
hello, I was a fan of kmail but left it for mutt since it does not work well with procmail (it requires to make additional copies of mail directories to work with procmail, which is simply nonsense to me). Just wondering if in kde 3.2 the situation has changed. I am using a backport kde 3.1.2 on woody. Alternatively, is there another qt based mua which fully supports procmail and both maildir/mailbox format? You then must make proper use of file locking and I doubt that using mbox would work at all in this case (two programs writing to the same file at the same time!). However, you _can_ use kmail with procmail: install courier-imap and configure your system (procmail) to put mail into ~/Maildir/ and use fetchmail instead of kmail's mail fetching. Now you can use the imap mode of mutt and kmail to use the local imap server.
