kwin 4:3.2.1-1 does not start kde

2004-04-03 Thread Timothy C. McGrath

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi. I apologize for bad formatting. My left arm is in a brace, so is
very hard to type.

I use debian unstable on a athlon xp 2600 with 512mb of ram. I have
linux kernel 2.4.25 installed.

I recently upgraded kde, but did not restart - later, I don't know
precisely when, X crashed for unrelated reasons, so I had to restart.

~From then on, if I use gdm, kdm or startx, kwin freezes partway while
starting up and does not start kde. I wind up with a blank unusable
desktop. no right/left/middle clicks with mouse or keyboard keys have
any effect. (besides alt-ctrl-backspace/plus/minus/Function keys which
work as usual)

a previous version of kwin, Version: 4:3.1.5-2 DOES work, and is how I
wrote this message.

I have included ps aux output of the computer while it is hung trying to
start kwin 4:3.2.1-1 via gdm.

If you have any idea of who I should contact for dealing with this bug,
or have any additional information please contact me. I am not on this
mailing list, so will not see any messages sent to this list.

Severity: normal

Hi,

first, you'll probably want to know the full erro message :

$

This only happens with my account, if I launch knode from a test
account, I only get the call to deprecated action. messages.

I think I may have somewhere an old scoring configuration that the new
version of Knode won't understand...

I tried to remove /tmp/kde-tibob/, /var/tmp/kdecache-tibob,
~/.kde/share/config/knoderc and ~/.kde/share/apps/knode but it won't
change anything.

Hope this helps...

Bug#240288: Fake bug: It's probably not yet a good idea for kdelibs 3.2 to propagate to testing.

2004-04-03 Thread Steve Langasek
I'm somewhat concerned about this particular bug. If a fake bug is
necessary to keep the new kdelibs out of testing, this seems to indicate
that any breakages that would result from an updated kdelibs without an
updated kdebase are not expressed in the package relationships, which
means they will still be a problem for partial upgrade scenarios even
after kdebase is ready and this bug is closed.

The other possibility is that kdelibs *will* break parts of kdebase if
it precedes kdebase into testing, but that this is already documented
appropriately using Conflicts between the relevant binary packages, in
which case this bug is redundant and can be closed.

You say that having split kdebase/kdelibs version is not a good idea
for various reasons. Could you please enumerate them?

Re: Power Mgt on Laptop

2004-04-03 Thread Clemens Wacha
Am Samstag, 3. April 2004 02:30 schrieb Sylvain Joyeux:
Try mounting you partition using ext2 and use noflushd

DO NOT use noflushd. Noflushd captures all write access to the hd
which is a very bad idea. Even sync is captured. If you set
noflushd to 30 min. and have a crash after 29 min. then you will
lose 29 min of data. No journal can help you out of this.

Try using the laptop mode patch which captures write activity but
force flushes all data on a timeout. the lm patch actively tries to
group write access to receive long spindown times. That should work
even with ext3.

Linux was and still is server oriented. Many programs dont like
laptops.. :-(

Re: Power Mgt on Laptop

2004-04-03 Thread Sylvain Joyeux
You have with laptop_mode the same problem than with noflushd (you're
losing 29 minutes of data if your laptop crashes and the laptop_mode
timeout is 30 minutes).

Where the laptop_mode shines is in its mechanism to group write access
every time the HD has to spin up (for a read for instance)

does kmail in kde 3.2 fully support procmail?

2004-04-03 Thread Mauro Darida
hello,
I was a fan of kmail but left it for mutt since it does not work well
with procmail (it requires to make additional copies of mail directories
to work with procmail, which is simply nonsense to me).
Just wondering if in kde 3.2 the situation has changed. I am using a
backport kde 3.1.2 on woody.
Alternatively, is there another qt based mua which fully supports
procmail and both maildir/mailbox format?

How do expect this to work? You then must make proper use of file locking and
I doubt that using mbox would work at all in this case (two programs writing
to the same file at the same time!).
However, you _can_ use kmail with procmail: install courier-imap and configure
your system (procmail) to put mail into ~/Maildir/ and use fetchmail instead
of kmail's mail fetching.
Now you can use the imap mode of mutt and kmail to use the local imap server.

for starters, case insensitive match, if you need it. For other more advanced
things see 'man procmailrc' and 'man procmailex'.

Another thing is the more user friendly configuration of procmail. To setup

Last but not least is procmail one example of the well known unix philosophy.

Just wondering if in kde 3.2 the situation has changed. I am using a

Alternatively, is there another qt based mua which fully supports
  procmail and both maildir/mailbox format?

How do expect this to work? You then must make proper use of file locking
and I doubt that using mbox would work at all in this case (two programs
writing to the same file at the same time!).

hm, kmail could implement file locking mechanisms like mutt or other mua do
it. I think this is the intention of the above question.

Perhaps you're using upgrade instead of dist-upgrade?

Nope, sid with dist-upgrade.

'apt-get upgrade' will upgrade existing packages but won't upgrade a
package that depend on 'new' packages. There are probably additional
packages needed for k3b. dselect or aptitude resolves these issues.

Why are you running ./configure on a Debian package?

(Plastik is already available for Debian.)

Erm .. Ville doesn't specify which Debian release he's using, but if
he's using Woody, then AFAIK there is no Plastik package available,
and the only way to get this style is to download the source tarball
from http://www.kde-look.org and compile it yourself.

I did this successfully in January.
(see my post on 28th.Jan to this list -
http://lists.debian.org/debian-kde/2004/debian-kde-200401/msg00314.html)

It's also worth checking out apt-get.org for other things before you
 go down the compile-it-yourself path.

I checked there, but there was no Woody Plastik package at that time
...

For non-packaged apps that you want to compile yourself, you'll
need to install the relevant -dev packages.
[...]
 $ apt-cache show x-dev
reveals that you probably want libx11-dev

 So install that package.

(The intuitive process often involves the judicious use of the apt-cache
command, specifically the 'search' and the 'show' parameters, and often
piped through a 'grep dev'. For example :

 $ apt-cache search x | grep dev | grep ^x
[...]

Yep - all good advice.
I have the following development packages installed, which seem
relevant :

ii kdebase-dev3.1.4-0woody1 KDE Base (development files)
ii kdelibs4-dev 3.1.4-0woody1 KDE core libraries (development
files)
ii libjpeg62-dev 6b-5 Development files for the IJG JPEG
library
ii libmng-dev 1.0.3-3M-N-G library (Development headers)
ii libpng-dev 1.2.1-1.1.wood PNG library - development
ii libqt3-mt-dev 3.1.2-0woody1 Qt development files (Threaded)
ii libstdc++2.10- 2.95.4-11woody The GNU stdc++ library (development
files)
ii qt3-dev-tools 3.1.2-0woody1 Qt3 development tools
ii xlibs-dev 4.2.1-15.backp X Window System client library
development files

(I have a backport of Xfree86 4.2.1 from backports.org installed)

Good luck.

/usr/bin/kde-update-menu: No such file or directory

2004-04-03 Thread Thomas E. Vaughan

I was trying to figure out why my Debian menu isn't working
under KDE in unstable, so I ran update-menus from the
command line. Among other things, it told me that
/usr/bin/kde-update-menu doesn't exist. I haven't been
following the list closely. Is this a frequently reported
thing?
