Bug#685895: firmware-linux-nonfree: Intermittent black screen on ATI Radeon with nonfree firmware
Package: firmware-linux-nonfree Version: 0.28+squeeze1 Severity: important I have an old computer with a Radeon 9200 (RV280) AGP card. After installing Squeeze everything works fine. If I install firmware-linux- nonfree to get the firmware for my Radeon card, the screen (in X/Gnome) goes black for a second or two and then returns to normal. This happens mostly when the screen is updated, e g if I scroll a window, several times per minute if I actively use the computer. If I remove firmware-linux-nonfree the problem goes away, but GPU acceleration is disabled. I tried using a newer kernel (linux-image-3.2.0-0.bpo.3-686-pae) and firmware- linux-nonfree (0.35~bpo60+1) from backports, no improvement. Since I do not need any other firmware from the nonfree package I can remove it as a workaround. Others might not have that option. lspci: 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 82865G/PE/P DRAM Controller/Host-Hub Interface (rev 02) 00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82865G/PE/P PCI to AGP Controller (rev 02) 00:06.0 System peripheral: Intel Corporation 82865G/PE/P Processor to I/O Memory Interface (rev 02) 00:1d.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) USB UHCI Controller #1 (rev 02) 00:1d.1 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) USB UHCI Controller #2 (rev 02) 00:1d.2 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) USB UHCI Controller #3 (rev 02) 00:1d.3 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) USB UHCI Controller #4 (rev 02) 00:1d.7 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) USB2 EHCI Controller (rev 02) 00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801 PCI Bridge (rev c2) 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) LPC Interface Bridge (rev 02) 00:1f.1 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) IDE Controller (rev 02) 00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) SMBus Controller (rev 02) 00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200] (rev 01) 01:00.1 Display controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200] (Secondary) (rev 01) 02:05.0 Ethernet controller: 3Com Corporation 3c940 10/100/1000Base-T [Marvell] (rev 12) dmesg | grep radeon: [6.826320] [drm] radeon kernel modesetting enabled. Bug#680097: reproducible on linux 3.5 too
Bug also reproducible on linux-image-3.5-trunk. Switching back to 2.6.32 and passing radeon.modeset=0 at kernel prompt solves the issue - no freezes. But with 3.2 and 3.5 even that does not work for my RV350. Definitively a kernel bug, please report upstream.

Please find, for review, the debconf templates and packages descriptions for the firmware-nonfree source package. This review will last from Sunday, August 26, 2012 to Wednesday, September 05, 2012. Please send reviews as unified diffs (diff -u) against the original files. Comments about your proposed changes will be appreciated. Your review should be sent as an answer to this mail. When appropriate, I will send intermediate requests for review, with [RFRn] (n=2) as a subject tag. When we will reach a consensus, I send a Last Chance For Comments mail with [LCFC] as a subject tag. Finally, the reviewed templates will be sent to the package maintainer as a bug report, and a mail will be sent to this list with [BTS] as a subject tag. Specific comment for this package: the main point is turning these templates to be translatable. However, as the real templates are built from the templates/templates.license.in file, I have some doubts about the right way to have templates really translated. Still, it doesn't hurt to start having translatability..:) Rationale: --- firmware-nonfree.old/debian/templates/templates.license.in 2012-08-22 06:51:30.031755144 +0200 +++ firmware-nonfree/debian/templates/templates.license.in 2012-08-26 14:30:20.280441129 +0200 @@ -1,10 +1,10 @@ Template: firmware-@package@/license/accepted Type: boolean Default: false -Description: Do you agree to the @license-title@? +_Description: Do you agree to the @license-title@? Bug#655152: [drm:intel_prepare_page_flip] *ERROR* Prepared flip multiple times
Hi Jonathan, Finally I got around to test this patch. While the system if fine for office work, cloning linux.git or compiling kernels takes hours. Please test the attached patch against a 3.2.y kernel, for example using the following instructions: Done with testing, results below. These instructions were really good and easy to use, thanks for that! 3. configure, build, test: git checkout stable/linux-3.2.y cp /boot/config-$(uname -r) .config; # current configuration scripts/config --disable DEBUG_INFO make localmodconfig; # optional: minimize configuration make deb-pkg; # optionally with -jnum for parallel build dpkg -i ../name of package; # as root reboot ...test test test ... I compiled 3.2.28, and it reproduces the bug within the first minute after boot and the logs are full of the error message. 4. try the patch: cd linux git am -3sc /path/to/the/patch make deb-pkg; # maybe with -j4 dpkg -i ../name of package; # as root reboot ... test test test ... The patch fixes the problem. I've run more than 30 minutes without a single occurrence of the error message in the logs. Everything I tested seems to be still working, Graphics, Suspend, etc. Sten -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-kernel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Christian PERRIER wrote: Sorry, Christian, this is a (particularly fiddly) en_GB-versus-en_US spelling rule difference. Ah, doh. Just learned something (which I'll probably forget soon)..:-) So no double l in en_US? In en_GB, the general rule is that a final short vowel plus single consonant doubles the consonant when you add a suffix starting with a vowel; some letters (K, S, R) misbehave, but L is regular, so we have cancelled traveller's cheques. Americans think that rule isn't complicated enough, so they only apply it for L in stressed syllables! Thus canceled traveler's checks, but controllable and dispelling. The idea, I suppose, is that this is closer to how R behaves. Bug#665493: linux-image-3.2.0-2-amd64: kernel fails to boot completely (timeout on modprobe -b pci:xxxx)
As the original reporter pointed out, this bug is triggered by a change in the debian kernel configuration regarding the ACPI PCI Hotplug driver [1]. Since kernel update linux-image-3.2.0-2-amd64 (3.2.10-1) this driver is build in (CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_ACPI=y) instead of being compiled as a module (CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_ACPI=m). The kernel changelog lists Ben Hutchings as author for this change: - [x86] Change HOTPLUG_PCI_ACPI to built-in (Closes: #663433) [2] The reason for this decision was that the ACPI PCI Hotplug driver didn't get loaded on machines which need it for ExpressCard hotplugging to work [3]. Since this bug got no attention at all on the kernel-pci mailinglist for three months now [4] I wanted to file a bugreport upstream against driver: pci – but I'm not sure what to do now since it doesn't seem to be very safe to build-in this driver and maybe the debian kernel team wants to reconsider this decision…? Please tell me if this decision is final – even though the kernel fails to load on at least two recent machines with the ACPI PCI Hotplug driver build in. If it is I'll file a bugreport upstream. Thanks, Stefan. P.S. The default kernel configuration for this item is CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_ACPI=n. I also had a look at this configuration item in Ubuntu – it's set to CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_ACPI=m. I think it is the correct decision. Building it as a module effectively meant it was disabled on most machine, since it doesn't get auto-loaded. It may be preferable to return to building it as a module *if* we can arrange for it to be loaded automatically where it's useful. But that presumably would not fix this bug. Bug#685953: linux: crash on speakup goto operation
Package: linux Version: 3.2.23-1 Severity: important Tags: patch Hello, Speakup currently has a bug which can lead to a mere crash when using its goto function: You can reproduce the bug by pressing numpad_insert, numpad_asterisk. As soon as you start typing a position, for instance 23y, the system will crash. The attached patch is the upstream fix for it. It'd be good to have it for wheezy. Re: Bug#684634: xserver-xorg-video-intel: viewing pic in browser reboots laptop
That doesn't sound like a userspace bug. Have you tried different (older/newer) kernel versions? Using xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.19.0-5, xserver-xorg-core and xserver-common 2:1.12.3-1, I tried the following kernel versions: (0) linux-image-3.2.0-3-amd64 3.2.21-3 (original bug report) (1) linux-image-3.1.0-1-amd64 3.1.8-2 (2) linux-image-3.2.0-3-amd64 3.2.23-3 (3) linux-image-3.3.0-trunk-amd64 3.3.6-1~experimental.1 (4) linux-image-3.4-trunk-amd64 3.4.4-1~experimental.1 (5) linux-image-3.5-trunk-amd64 3.5.2-1~experimental.1 I also tried the newest version of xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.20.5-1, xserver-xorg-core and xserver-common 2:1.12.3.902-1: (6) linux-image-3.2.0-3-amd64 3.2.23-3 (7) linux-image-3.3.0-trunk-amd64 3.3.6-1~experimental.1 (8) linux-image-3.4-trunk-amd64 3.4.4-1~experimental.1 (9) linux-image-3.5-trunk-amd64 3.5.2-1~experimental.1 (10) linux 3.6rc3+ c182ae3 In all cases the laptop rebooted upon dragging the image displayed in the browser. In (3), (4), (5), (7), (9) and (10) I only got reboots after trying to drag the second time. Also, while being dragged the rebooting image is shown as black rectangle (in all cases), while for smaller images the image is shown next to the mouse cursor. Any ideas how to debug that further are welcome, since the typical recipies for hung gpus don't work. OK – I already tested linux-image-3.5-trunk-amd64 (3.5.2-1~experimental.1) the bug is still present, so I'll file the upstream bug report soon. Thanks. P.S. The default kernel configuration for this item is CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_ACPI=n. The default kernel configuration has a lot of features disabled that many users need. I see. I also had a look at this configuration item in Ubuntu – it's set to CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_ACPI=m. Have you checked whether they add it to /proc/modules? You mean if they add it to /etc/modules, right? [Q]: linux 3.4 (LTS)
Hi, I saw a post in https://lkml.org/lkml/2012/8/20/675 by Greg-KH As I'm getting a few questions about this, and I realized that I never sent out an email about this, yes, the 3.4 kernel tree will be the next -longterm kernel that I will be maintaining for at least 2 years. Currently I'm maintaining the following stable kernel trees for the following amount of time: 3.0 - for at least one more year 3.4 - for at least two years 3.5 - until 3.6.1 is out Hope this helps clear up any rumors floating around. If anyone has any questions, please let me know. Just a question: 3.4 is also LTS. Using 3.2 for Wheezy cycle is better than 3.4? Using old kernel is sometimes hard to import new drivers for new hardware, I guess. I know 3.2.x is stable enough and we're in freeze already, but Wheezy kernel will be used until 2016 or so. If we choose 3.4, then can get nice features and new drivers with less kernel maintainer team work, it's better. -- Regards, Hideki Yamane henrich @ debian.or.jp/org http://wiki.debian.org/HidekiYamane -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-kernel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe.
