Bug#658759: disable l2 cache on kirkwood devices (workaround #658904)

2012-09-11 Thread Jonathan Nieder
Hi Ian,

On Aug 30, 2012, Ian Campbell wrote:

I can see two ways of distributing this fix. Either a kernel patch gated
on CONFIG_ARCH_KIRKWOOD to some early bit of code or use devio in
 flash-kernel + the installer build.

Sorry I missed this before. That sounds like an excellent idea for a
kernel patch. A kind user on the linux-arm-kernel@ list[1] recently
mentioned he'd be willing to test patches, if you need a guinea pig,
and I assume once a patch is written and tested it should be possible
to get useful feedback from the list.

Thanks,
Jonathan

Bug#687254: linux-image-3.2.0-3-amd64: Using i915, after login from gdm, screen goes black, and only a reboot helps.

2012-09-11 Thread Daniel Landau
Package: src:linux
Version: 3.2.23-1
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

Dear Maintainer,

My computer with an intel i7 cpu most times works properly, but sometimes it
gets stuck in a black screen after loggin in from gdm. The relevant lines, from
kern.log (I think) are:

Sep 11 10:56:39 kielo kernel: [6.885218] fbcon: inteldrmfb (fb0) is primary
device
Sep 11 10:56:39 kielo kernel: [8.326401] Console: switching to colour frame
buffer device 240x67
Sep 11 10:56:39 kielo kernel: [8.335424] fb0: inteldrmfb frame buffer
device
Sep 11 10:56:39 kielo kernel: [8.335427] drm: registered panic notifier
Sep 11 10:56:39 kielo kernel: [8.335446] No ACPI video bus found

Something along these lines is scattered across the internet, and I manage to
consistently boot with either of the solutions:

   * Give acpi=off as kernel parameter
   * set i915 options modeset=0 in modprobe.d

Neither of these workaround is satisfactory, because then I don't have the full
resolution nor proper gnome 3.

I also tried with kernel 2.6.32-5-amd64, which didn't go into a black screen,
but didn't give proper video support either.

My main concern with doing this on the kernel side is that it will
eventually fall foul of the attempts to reduce everything to a single
kernel image, since the code will necessarily be quite kirkwood specific
and run very early on.

Martin's testing of di on ARM[0] suggests this issue isn't all that
widespread, which lead me to conclude that the risk of making a change
like this (either in the kernel or the installer/flash-kernel) for
Wheezy was not worth the chance of breaking some other kirkwood device.

That's very good to hear. Can you reproduce this with 3.5.y from
 experimental?

Well, I installed now 3.5-trunk-amd64 from experimental. First tests are
showing good results. I still could not reproduce the behaviour with this
kernel. But it is too early, to make a final conclusion. So I will test it now
for a few days and will then send a report.

If so, please send a description of the symptoms to
 linux-wirel...@vger.kernel.org, cc-ing ath5k-de...@lists.ath5k.org,
Nick Kossifidis mickfl...@gmail.com, and either me or this bug log
so we can track it. Be sure to mention

  - steps to reproduce, expected result, actual result, and how the
difference indicates a bug (should be simple enough)

  - which kernel versions you have tested and what happened with
each

  - full dmesg output from booting and trying to use wireless in the
affected state, as an attachment

  - any other weird symptoms or observations

Yes, if any strange behaviours occure, I will send them to the list. My
current system is debian-testing, which I am running on several computers
(mostly daily updated). These are 2 x amd64-cpus (a notebook Acer Aspire 7520G
and a Desktop PC) and my Asus EEEPC 1005 HGO (i386).

Hopefully the symptoms will ring a bell for someone, who can provide
instructions or a patch to track down the cause further.

Yeah, that might be great!

 Hope that helps,
 Jonathan

Thanky for the help.

Best regards

Is it possible to do something reasonable if the extra features

I think that's ok --- the change would be valuable upstream anyway,
and it can filter into mainline and wheezy whenever it has had an
appropriate amount of testing.

Huh, I did not test those versions. I just tested 3.2-xx (stock debian
testing) and now at your advice version 3.5. (experimental)

If 3.5 will work, I can test 3.3 and 3.4, too, if needed.

Debian and Netapp NFSv4 locks/owner exhaustion

2012-09-11 Thread Richard Allen

Hi all,

We're currently having a highly intermittent (and seemingly random)
problem with our 20 Debian clients running courier POP3 and IMAPd
connecting to a Netapp filer using NFSv4, whereby locks/owner objects
are being maxed out on the filer, causing the clients to start to have
very high load.

Netapp think that this is a bug with the implementation of NFS in our
Debian kernel - please see part of an email they sent us below:

---
Thanks for providing all the data
from the sync core and the lock status data provided indicated you have
a linux client bug. equivalent to redhat bugzilla 620502/621304 .

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=620502 2.6.18 kernel
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=621304 2.6.32 kernel.

Basically there is a know linux kernel bug where it request a new owner
id everytime a new lock request is submitted. There are linux upstream
fixed that prevents new owner lock id and reuse existing ones.

Analyses from the sync core

As previously mentioned NFSv4 has 4 items StateID/ClientID and OwnerID
limits.

StateID
kgdb-amd64-7.4-54) p v4lock_states_free_count
$8 = {16789, 32768}
There are free states available.

ClientID
(kgdb-amd64-7.4-54) p v4lock_clients_free[0]
$10 = {{cqh_first = 0xff04cd2cda00, cqh_last = 0xff04cd4caf00}
 there are free clients

OwnerID
(kgdb-amd64-7.4-54) p v4lock_owners_free[0]
$9 = {{cqh_first = 0xa25f2640, cqh_last = 0xa25f2640}
there are no free owners

(kgdb-amd64-7.4-54) print_owner_htab_count
total:10240
total owner objects in use:10240

(kgdb-amd64-7.4-54) p v4owner_table_size/2
$527 = 10240
per node max owners value reached

Lets correlate this to the lock status output provided.

Corrective action is to make sure you use a kernel release from your
distro that has upstream patch

Redhat has provided an errata fix int he kernel patch

http://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2011-0542.html;
---

Some info on our platform:

Clients:
20 of, running Squeeze 6.0.1, but with backported kernel
3.2.0-0.bpo.1-amd64.

nfs-common 1:1.2.2-4
The application is courier IMAP and POP3.

Server:
Netapp FAS3170 running 8.0.1P1 7-Mode

The main question I have is whether the bugs Netapp mentioned in the
Redhat kernel have been fixed in the backported Debian kernel we are
running, and if so, what version the fixes have been introduced in (and
if not, what version the fixes *will* be introduced in)?

Otherwise, if anyone has any other suggestions as to what else the
problem could be, I'd be happy to hear them :)

Thanks,

Richard

Bug#658759: disable l2 cache on kirkwood devices (workaround #658904)

Is it possible to do something reasonable if the extra features
register is read first? (Please forgive my ignorance.)

I'm afraid I don't know either. Is this extra features register ARM
architectural or specific to the Kirkwood devices?

I think the cache control registers are implementation defined, so this
code would need to know it is running on a specific set of processors
before it would be safe to run it.

Martin's testing of di on ARM[0] suggests this issue isn't all that
widespread, which lead me to conclude that the risk of making a change
like this (either in the kernel or the installer/flash-kernel) for
Wheezy was not worth the chance of breaking some other kirkwood device.

I think that's ok --- the change would be valuable upstream anyway,
and it can filter into mainline and wheezy whenever it has had an
 appropriate amount of testing.

Huh, I did not test those versions. I just tested 3.2-xx (stock debian

If 3.5 will work, I can test 3.3 and 3.4, too, if needed.

Ah, I think I see where I misunderstood. When you said The described

No, I meant it this way: I started Windows 7, then rebooted and started again

time might be the better English expression).

So I guessed, that Windows switched something in the wirelesscard or the bus.

Ok, that is how I understood it the first time.

My question still stands: when it happened every time, did it happen
right away?

If it did, and assuming you rebooted out of Windows 7 to try it,
there is no need to test 3.5.y any more. We already know it doesn't
reproduce the bug under the same circumstances as 3.2.y did.

Hoping that clarifies,

 right away?

Yes, it happened at once. Right after I booted Win7 and then booted into Linux
again.

It happened also, when I booted Win 7, shut down the computer, powered off
(power supply and power cell), and then started Linux.

Did I describe it now better?
If it did, and assuming you rebooted out of Windows 7 to try it,
there is no need to test 3.5.y any more. We already know it doesn't
reproduce the bug under the same circumstances as 3.2.y did.

So you know the reasons. That is really good news! I read about, that 3.5
changed several things in bus strategies.

 Hoping that clarifies,
 Jonathan

Thank you very much!

No. We know the above because of the information you provided!

 * 3.2.y triggers the bug reproducibly
 * 3.5.y does not trigger the bug reproducibly

I have my guesses about causes, but I am keeping them to myself until
we have the additional information I asked about, namely how 3.3.6 and

Bug#687309: linux-image-3.5-trunk-686-pae: USB keyboard not available at boot for cryptsetup

2012-09-11 Thread Luca Capello
Package: src:linux
Version: 3.5-1~experimental.1
Severity: normal
Usertags: pca.it-boot

Hi there!

The Samsung NP-Q1u [1] has on-device (slightly difficult for everyday
usage) and USB-external keyboards. Starting from 3.5-1~experimental.1
this latter is no more available at the cryptsetup prompt, while it
works as expected in GRUB-2 and GNOME-3.

[1] http://bugs.debian.org/682737

The same behavior happens with 3.5.2-1~experimental.1, but it did not
with 3.4.4-1~experimental.1 or 3.2.23-1. However, the differences in
the initrd content does not seem relevant:

Bug#665881: [wheezy] module ath5k is blocking wlan-card

2012-09-11 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich

I have my guesses about causes, but I am keeping them to myself until
we have the additional information I asked about, namely how 3.3.6 and
 3.4.1 do.

I would like to help. Can you tell me, where I find the packages of 3.3 and 3.4
images? I did not find them in the debian repositories.

Thanks for your patience, and sorry for the lack of clarity.

No problem.

 Jonathan

Hans

The dmesg difference between 3.1.0 (working) and 3.2.0 (broken) is a bit
confusing - on one USB port, there's no change, but on the other the new
module reports a failure (this output is with hid.debug=1 and is a bit fuzzy
because of random harmless changes like spelling fixes or device indices

Now where did the devices 0003:046D:C52B.000[34] go with the new kernel?
Are they the ones that logi_dj_probe sees as 0 and 1?

The code says:

/* Ignore interfaces 0 and 1, they will not carry any data, dont create
 * any hid_device for them */
if (intf-cur_altsetting-desc.bInterfaceNumber !=
LOGITECH_DJ_INTERFACE_NUMBER) {
dbg_hid(%s: ignoring ifnum %d\n, __func__,
intf-cur_altsetting-desc.bInterfaceNumber);
return -ENODEV;
}

Well, that probably explains it. But why does it do that?

lsusb -v says the following about the hardware:
