Comment # 6 on bug 94757 from Ben Skeggs

I have a WIP chunk of work which will hopefully address this issue as a
side-effect. It's not ready for general consumption yet, but I'll update the
bug once it is.

Fixing a regression in linux in 8.4

2016-04-06 Thread Ben Hutchings
Bug #819881 is affecting a fair number of users and I'm wondering how
best to get the fix deployed.  I can upload to jessie-pu any time but
most users won't get it that way, and the next point release is just
too far away.  I can also bundle it with a security update but there's
nothing that important (except on s390x) to push out soon.

Could this fix (and some other reversions) go into jessie-updates?

Ben.

Bug#820258: linux-image-3.16.0-4-amd64: multiple oops. froze. had to reboot. null chars in log files.

2016-04-06 Thread gofloss gofloss
Package: src:linux
Version: 3.16.7-ckt25-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?

i am running a pretty vanilla jessie (but with an nvidia firmware).

the computer froze.

web browsing both times. today it was an unintentional drag
of a url in iceweasel. (grr, firefox.)

it never did this before Apr 4, which i believe is after the
recent kernel upgrade.

therefore, may i suspect the new kernel upgrade is the cause
of this? if it's instead hardware or user error, i'd like
to know about it.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

rebooted.

   * What was the outcome of this action?

it froze in mid-unintentional-drag. rebooting fixed it.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

working computer?

here is the log starting one line above the oops. take it
easy on me as ianakh. ask me for anything else you want.

is normal priority correct for a system freeze that requires
a reboot?

thanks.

Thanks Ben (and sorry for the late reply). The patch you sent seems to
also fix 817874, no more frozen screens here, good work :)

Kind regards

Michael

Bug#819881: radeon_fence_ref BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference

2016-04-06 Thread Erik

As already concluded this bug causes serious trouble! My system freezes
all the time after upgrading to 8.4. Sometimes after only a few seconds,
with the hardware reset button as the only way out.

If a fix exists I would really like it to be made public through the
update-upgrade process as soon as possible. Thank you very much for
providing a fix, but does your intention to include the fix in the next
upload to jessie-security and jessie-proposed-updates mean days or
weeks wait?

Erik

Bug#820230: initramfs-tools: DHCP is very flaky and sometimes doesn't work

2016-04-06 Thread Rian Hunter
Package: initramfs-tools
Version: 0.123
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

DHCP network config in initramfs is very flaky on my system. I would say ~50%
of the time it doesn't work.

>From the perspective of My DHCP server it assigns the IP correctly.

DHCP works once the system has booted up in its normal environment.

I have two available NICs but only one is connected.

Thanks,
Rian

Yes. My guess would be a voltage dip since it happens when spinning up
the disk. There is little the host can do about USB disconnects anyway.
That's a device hardware or firmware issue. It won't help tracking it as
a kernel bug.

I would start by adding more power, using an external power supply if
supported or a split USB cable drawing power from 2 ports.

The crash after disconnection certainly seems like it could be fixed by
that.  But the rapid disconnections (at 13:31:32 and 13:32:47) appear
to be a different bug.

I believe this bug is fixed by commit e5bdfd50d6f7 ("Revert "usb: hub:
do not clear BOS field during reset device"") in mainline. Don't know
the stable status of that. I don't see it in v3.16.x yet. I assume Ben

I'm afraid we can't make such promises.  However, I intend to include
the fix in the next uploads to jessie-security and to jessie-proposed-

Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?

I opened Iceweasel.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)?

I scrolled on a Wordpress or Twitter webpage. (Tried it with other pages, but
bug did not happen.)

   * What was the outcome of this action?

Total freeze. No keybord or mouse operation possible.
I also tried iceweasel in safe-mode, but the same thing happens.

I tried this with my another installation (different hardware) and could not
confirm the bug. I gues it is an issue with the graphics card. Maybe this is a
duplicate of bug #710047, but the system protocol looks totally different here:

Bug#819881: radeon_fence_ref BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference

2016-04-06 Thread LinAdmin
Ben

After the recent upgrade of Debian Jessie several systems
here started suffering from the same GPF.

I think it would be helpful for everybody concerned if you
could publish in the buglist the date you intend to release
the upgrade fixing this bug.

Many thanks for your help and kind regards!

crashed. It actually wrote some stuff in the log, which I include below, and
continued to work, then I tried to restart it and something went wrong (I'm not
100% certain, because I'm remote and was told, but I believe it managed to
shutdown [the log goes up to the point of stopping rsyslogd] but failed to
bootup, until the USB device was disconnected and was reset again.)

I think this could be related to #817874. I don't believe I have Radeon, and
I'm not running X anyway (it's a server), but there are some common things in
the log. After finding about #817874 I tried downgrading to the previous kernel
(3.16.7-ckt20-1+deb8u4), and it now works fine. Mind you, I'm now running the
previous kernel, that's why the information automatically included in this bug
report is about the previous kernel.

This is the log when the USB device was connected:
