The latter question was based on it on the assumption that it was fixed on
5.10.x, but as you're unsure, let's keep it open.

Yes to the former, unsure to the latter.

If you’d rather not, I can keep a note on my TODO for when the
other system is back up, then reproduce and either unarchive or
let it rest, as I don’t have a timeframe for that.

Good news: The issue got fixed in mainline in 6.7-rc6, and the change
backported to 6.6.8, 6.1.69, 5.10.205. So it will be in each of the
next rebases.

Bug#1058890: Adding more information after tests

2023-12-20 Thread Dr . André Desgualdo Pereira
1. I tested booting with the kernel option "nomodeset", it made no difference.

2. I tested suspend by writing to /sys/power/pm_test the following successively
"freezer", "devices", "platform", "processors", "core". Every single test was
successful, ie, the system wake up on its own after 5 seconds.

3. Sometimes I can make the system kind of wake up (the screen turns on after
pressing the power button successively), but the system seems unable to read
any file on the disk, which makes me wonder if the problem is with the SED
(Self Encrypted Drive).

That's currently not enabled in Debian's kernel config, so that needs to be

Then you wait until that kernel is available in Debian and test with that.
Or you build your own kernel with Debian's config. If you want, you can use my
branch for that: https://salsa.debian.org/diederik/linux/-/tree/update-to-6.7

> The 1st link is an error to a person who understands this and sends patches

The upstream commit was useful. As it isn't marked as a bugfix, it'll be send
to Linus in the 6.8 merge window, so it won't end up (by default) in the 6.7
upstream kernel and thus not (by default) in Debian's.

it was possible to test only on the kernel version 6.7 built for ubuntu.
Unfortunately, debian does not have this version of the kernel. Even in the
experimental repository. The 1st link is an error to a person who understands
this and sends patches to the upstream kernel. The second link comes from the
upstream core.

What works, or in this case doesn't work, on a Ubuntu kernel, is completely
irrelevant to the Debian kernel as they use different kernel configs.
Please don't pollute Debian kernel bugs with such info, or at least clearly

Switching off iwlwifi device hangs and blocks the system making it

Bug#1052714: Use upstream tarball from kernel.org

2023-12-20 Thread Christopher Huhn
This reddit thread suggests using the latest firmware tarball from
kernel.org:

https://www.reddit.com/r/debian/comments/17umedg/fixed_amd_rx_7800_xt_gpu_on_debian_unstable/

A (more) frequently updated firmware-amd-graphics would be more
favorable, maybe also for stable-updates?

Dear Maintainer,

the built-in microphone of my Lenovo ThinkPad P16s Gen 2, model 21K9... laptop
is not working.
The laptop has an AMD Ryzen 7 Pro 7840U CPU ('Raphael' / RPL) with an Audio
Coprocessor:

64:00.5 Multimedia controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD]
ACP/ACP3X/ACP6x Audio Coprocessor (rev 63)

Capabilities: [2a0] Access Control Services
Kernel modules: snd_pci_acp3x, snd_rn_pci_acp3x, snd_pci_acp5x,
snd_pci_acp6x

The default Debian 12 kernel has the KCONFIG switch

# CONFIG_SND_SOC_AMD_RPL_ACP6x is not set

disabled.
Even in the kernel available from bookworm-backports the module is not enabled.

The module is most likely required to get the built-in microphone working.

A very similar situation was reported on the Arch Linux BBS affecting Ryzen
6000 'Yellow Carp': https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=278886
In this case, the Audio Coprocessor was also the culprit for a non-working
microphone on a Lenovo laptop.

I tried building the kernel based on the config file located in /boot, but
ended up with a ~500MB initrd image and booting failed with a message like
"initrd too large".
Sadly I was unable to find any documentation about how to build a kernel based
on the default Debian configuration that enabled me to successfully build resp.
boot a kernel with the module enabled.

I would very much appreciate if you could enable CONFIG_SND_SOC_AMD_RPL_ACP6x=m
for the kernels available in bookworm-backports.

If you can hint me at why the initrd of my self-built kernel was way larger
than what is generated for the prebuilt kernel images I can confirm if loading
the module enables the laptop microphone.

I copied /boot/config-6.5.0-0.deb12.4-amd64 to .config in the extracted kernel
sources and ran
make oldconfig
make
make modules
make modules_install
cp ./arch/x86_64/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinux-6.5.13
update-initramfs -c -k 6.5.13
update-grub

I did use vanilla sources from kernel.org for this test, there were no
compilation errors but as I already stated the generated initrd image was
almost 500MB in size and booting failed.

Package: linux-image-6.5.0-5-amd64
Version: linux-image-6.5.0-5-amd64
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

My RTL8125 NIC stoped working after upgrading the kernel (linux-image-amd64)
from version 6.5.10+1 to 6.5.13+1.

More specifically, the previous kernel that this meta package depends on
(package linux-image-6.5.0-4-amd64) worked fine; but the new dependency
(linux-image-6.5.0-5-amd64) causes my NIC to stop working.

I found this upstream bug report:
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=218187

And I can confirm that I'm also using a jumbo MTU (9000 bytes).

The issue has been fixed in kernel 6.6.5:
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git/commit/drivers/net/ethernet/realtek?h=v6.6.5=a9ef897677f957401842e45f2006167cdf757ee4

But I'm not sure if kernel 6.5.x will still receive a fix, as it's EOL.

I added below two snippets from the syslog, illustrating the issue.

Cheers, Timo

Dear Maintainer,

vDPA means virtio data path acceleration, and a faster alternative
to vhost-net. Its advantages over vhost-net is explained at
https://www.redhat.com/ja/blog/introduction-vdpa-kernel-framework

MDEV means mediator devices, and its use cases are explained at
https://www.redhat.com/en/blog/how-deep-does-vdpa-rabbit-hole-go
and can conveniently used with vDPA above.

Both of them are currently disabled at the Debian kernel package.
I would appreciate it if you could consider enabling them as modules.

Best regards, Ryutaroh Matsumoto

Package: linux-image-6.6-amd64-unsigned
Version: 6.6.4-1~exp1
Severity: wishlist

Dear Maintainer,

Linux 5.15+ has a cool new userspace block device interface: VDUSE.

https://docs.kernel.org/userspace-api/vduse.html

https://www.phoronix.com/news/Linux-5.15-VDUSE-vDPA

My testing shows that it's a real breakthrough in the userspace block device
area:

https://git.yourcmc.ru/vitalif/vitastor/src/branch/master/docs/usage/qemu.en.md#vduse

But all current Debian Linux kernels have CONFIG_VDPA, CONFIG_VDPA_USER,
CONFIG_VIRTIO_VDPA disabled.

Ubuntu, Proxmox, Fedora, kernel-mainline for RHEL all have it enabled.

Please enable them in Debian too!

So affects microphone support in recent laptops such as the ThinkPad P14s

Dear Maintainer,

Please enable the System Trace Module (STM) and the Intel Trace Hub Software
Trace Hub on arch amd64/x86_64, on Debian Trixie.

CONFIG_STM=m
CONFIG_STM_PROTO_BASIC=m
CONFIG_STM_PROTO_SYS_T=m
CONFIG_STM_DUMMY=m
CONFIG_STM_SOURCE_CONSOLE=m
CONFIG_STM_SOURCE_HEARTBEAT=m
CONFIG_STM_SOURCE_FTRACE=m
CONFIG_INTEL_TH_STH=m

System Trace Module (STM) is a kind of trace source device [1], which can not
only collect trace data from software sources, but also monitor hardware
events.

Any software program no matter where it is in kernel space or user space
can write STM device with message string (i.e. trace data), like using print
functions.

Each software or hardware trace source is assigned a unique pair of master
and channel, so that a decoder can know which source the trace data come
from by this. As a kind of resource, the number of masters and channels
are limited, for example *Intel STH* has up to 65,536 masters
and up to 256 channels per master.

Unlike some traditional tracing approach which would lose all traces once system
crashed since the traces are stored in system memory, tracing with STM can
survive this kind of case because all traces collected via STM would end up in
sink device which can be still alive even the system is dead so long as the
hardware design allows it.There’s another benefit of using STM to collect
software traces or monitor hardware events. Since everything is logged to the
same STM with timestamps, it is possible to correlate events happening in the
entire system rather than being confined to the logging facility of a single
entity.

Dear Maintainer,

Please enable the Intel's Topology Aware Register and PM Capsule
Interface (INTEL_TPMI) and support for the Running Average Power
Limit (RAPL) feature via TPMI (INTEL_RAPL_TPMI) on arch amd64/x86_64,
on Debian Trixie.

TPMI is a flexible, extendable and software-driver-enumerable MMIO
interface for Power Management (PM) features. TPMI, planned for future
Intel® Xeon® processor generations, is designed using an architectural
PCI-e standards-based model so that PM feature support can be provided
cleanly as a driver and not as part of the base OS.

Intel RAPL is one of the features that benefits from this. Using the
TPMI interface has the advantage over the traditional MSR (Model
Specific Register) interface of not requiring scheduling a thread on
the target CPU to read or write. Also, TPMI provides an architectural
interface by supplying hierarchical tables and fields, which will not
need any model specific implementation.

In addition to RAPL, there are two other features that receive similar
benefits and which are selected by default by enabling INTEL_TPMI.
They are INTEL_UNCORE_FREQ_CONTROL_TPMI and INTEL_SPEED_SELECT_TPMI.

A MR was created with this proposal at:
https://salsa.debian.org/kernel-team/linux/-/merge_requests/863

Thanks,
Jair Gonzalez
