Bug#1029602: vmwgfx: kernel oops when using fbterm in vmware

2023-01-29 Thread taoky

Hi Bonaccorso,

I have tested the vanilla 5.10.165 and the 6.0.12-1 in
bullseye-backports, and they both have this bug.

I'm going to compile a mainline kernel and then report this bug. BTW,
I'm not sure... does it mean to Cc 1029...@bugs.debian.org when
reporting to upstream to "keep in the loop"?

Thank you.

Dear Maintainer,

It seems that fbterm triggers an out-of-bound memory write (memcpy) when vmwgfx
loads.

Yes, Cc the Debian downstream bug as well so we keep informed. It's
not a must but helps noticing if there is upstream change/fix for the
issue. Alternatively let us know when the report has happened upstream
and set the bug forwarded to the upstream report.

severity: important

Upgrading the package of the currently running kernel, e.g. for
rebuilds like 6.0.2-1+b1, breaks module loading until the next reboot.
Trying to load modules by applications, e.g. qemu, will fail:

Oct 21 22:23:23 debianHome kernel: BPF: type_id=1457 bits_offset=0
Oct 21 22:23:23 debianHome kernel: BPF:
Oct 21 22:23:23 debianHome kernel: BPF: Invalid name
Oct 21 22:23:23 debianHome kernel: BPF:
Oct 21 22:23:23 debianHome kernel: failed to validate module [tun] BTF: -22

Maybe this is hard to fix, due to signature changes, so maybe the
postinst should print a strong reboot recommendation?

Hello!

Since upstream version 5.19.x, src:linux FTBFS on alpha due to unversioned
symbols [1]:

> ABI is not completely versioned! Refusing to continue.

> Unversioned symbols:
> strcat module: vmlinux, version:
> 0x, export: EXPORT_SYMBOL
> strcpy module: vmlinux, version:
> 0x, export: EXPORT_SYMBOL
> strncat module: vmlinux, version:
> 0x, export: EXPORT_SYMBOL
> strncpy module: vmlinux, version:
> 0x, export: EXPORT_SYMBOL
> Can't read ABI reference. ABI not checked!

A local build showed that this is still present in the latest package version
6.0.12-1.

According to this comment [2], this issue can be fixed by adding the
appropriate include
to arch/$ARCH/include/asm/asm-prototypes.h but the include for
is already
present, so I'm not sure what the actual problem is.

I'm reporting this issue to hopefully get some feedback on what else to try to
fix this
issue. I'm happy to provide any patches once I know what to fix.

Thanks,
Adrian

The DeviceTree files (*.dtb) as shipped with the Debian kernel have the
executable bit set, but there is absolutely no need for that.
Lintian rightfully complains about it (executable-not-elf-or-script).

$ ls -lh /usr/lib/linux-image-6.1.0-1-arm64/rockchip/rk3328*.dtb

/usr/lib/linux-image-6.1.0-1-arm64/rockchip/rk3328-roc-pc.dtb

The sources for them (*.dts) don't have the executable bit set though.

Package: src:linux
Version: 6.1.4-1
Severity: serious

Hello there,

Since booting 6.1.0-1, the 2nd DisplayPort output from my Lenovo Docking
Station doesn't get any output. It is _seen_ as connected by the screen, but
apparently gets no video signal (or just blank). This is clearly a regression
from 6.0.0-6 where this was working.

I'm quite confident this is a kernel-level change (and not X11 or Plasma) as
this already appears clearly at cryptsetup password prompt (which usually goes
to all outputs, but not on 6.1.0-1 which only displays it on the laptop screen
and the 1st connected DisplayPort.

Happy to help solve this.

Best,
OdyX

Package: linux-image-6.1.0-1-amd64
Version: 6.1.4-1
Severity: important

Hello there,

this is a regression from 6.0.0 too; after post-suspend wakeup, my
plasma wayland session stays frozen; the two DisplayPort screens light
up, backgrounds are shown, but the mouse doesn't move, nothing works.

I'm reportbug'ging this from a SysRQ-R, Ctrl-Alt-F2 text tty.

>From cursory dmesg reading, it seems amdgpu has an "IB test failed"
_before_ kernel suspend.

This is on 6.1.4-1a~test, patched against the "2nd DisplayPort doesn't
light up", so feel free to close the bug; I'll test if I get the same
symptoms on an unpatched kernel anyway :-)

Best,

OdyX

Dear Maintainer,

Please enable the Intel Uncore frequency control driver.
This driver allows control of uncore frequency limits on
supported server platforms.

# Intel Uncore frequency control driver

  CONFIG_INTEL_UNCORE_FREQ_CONTROL=m

Some server users set limits on the uncore frequency using MSR 620H, while
running latency sensitive workloads. This driver "the uncore frequency",
  controls RING/LLC (last-level cache) clocks.

But MSR control is not always possible from the user space, so this driver
provides a sysfs interface to set max and min frequency limits. This MSR
620H is a die scoped in multi-die system or package scoped in non multi-die
  systems.

When this driver is loaded, a new directory is created under
   /sys/devices/system/cpu.

For example on a two package Skylake server:
  $ cd /sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_uncore_frequency

  $ ls
  package_00_die_00 package_01_die_00

  $ ls package_00_die_00
  max_freq_khz min_freq_khz initial_max_freq_khz
  initial_min_freq_khz

  $ grep . *
  max_freq_khz:240
  min_freq_khz:120
  initial_max_freq_khz:240
  initial_min_freq_khz:120

Here, initial_max_freq_khz and initial_min_freq_khz are read only
attributes to show power up or initial values of max and min frequencies
respectively. Other attributes are read-write, so that users can modify.

Dear Maintainer,

Please enable the 5-level paging support.

Original x86-64 was limited by 4-level paging to 256 TiB of virtual
address space and 64 TiB of physical address space. We are already
bumping into this limit: some vendors offers servers with 64 TiB of
memory today.

To overcome the limitation upcoming hardware will introduce support
for 5-level paging. It is a straight-forward extension of the current
page table structure adding one more layer of translation.

It bumps the limits to 128 PiB of virtual address space and 4 PiB of
physical address space.

In Debian this feature was added as disabled at 998b27af2f57 ("Explicitly
set various config symbols to their default values") [1], but in Linux
upstream at 18ec1eaf58fb ("x86/mm: Enable 5-level paging support by default")
[2] it was flip to default-y.

A merge request against SID was made at:

https://salsa.debian.org/kernel-team/linux/-/merge_requests/647

I don't know if this fix should be propagated to others branches.

Dear Maintainer,

My Netgear A6210 (Mediatek MT7612U) hard locks the system on login. If I
instead log in via console,
the first network access (such as ping) results in a kernel panic.

I found this upstream bug report:
http://lists.infradead.org/pipermail/linux-mediatek/2022-December/054010.html

However it is unclear to me if or when the fix will be applied to the kernel.

Best,
Stuart

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?

This was triggered when trying to capture video via a bt878 card using the
https://github.com/ali1234/vhs-teletext script. Note 'xawtv' is working
fine, so the card is generally happy.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

I ran 'teletext record -d /dev/vbi0 > capture.vbi' from the above package
that triggers a read from vbi0; an strace shows:
[pid 6466] read(3, 0x27feb20, 65536) = -1 ENOMEM (Cannot allocate memory)

and the WARN_ON in the dmesg

   * What was the outcome of this action?

a WARNING in the dmesg, see below; and the python script backtraced
with apparently an -ENOMEM; but there's plenty of RAM:
dg@major:~/vhs-teletext$ free -m
   totalusedfree shared buff/cache available
Mem:7937 7892963 244847147
Swap:974 0 974

   * What outcome did you expect instead?
Happy gathered video.

Sure, that package is in main, so doesn't need to move from non-free to
non-free-firmware so wasn't on that list. :)

Bug#1029990: ath: phy1: DMA failed to stop in 10 ms

2023-01-29 Thread Vincent Danjean
Package: src:linux
Version: 6.0.12-1~bpo11+1
Severity: normal

I've spurious problems with my atheros PCIE card.
It is used with hostapd to provide wifi AP.
Sometime, the client do not succeed to connect to internet.
In the log, I can observe the following lines. It seems that
most (all?) of the time, they are preceeded by:

[...]
Jan 29 17:08:33 aya kernel: [573587.069575] ath: phy1: DMA failed to stop in 10

[...]
=> see how a bunch of "ath: phy1: DMA failed to stop in 10 ms" are
just following two "DMAR: ..." lines (and this pattern is recurent).

I was using this PCIE card without any problems for several years.
The errors occured when I changed my tower for a more recent processor
and motherboard. The disk (software and system config) have been
kept.
I suspect interraction between the atheros driver and the iommu
(DMAR), the latter was not available on my previous processor.

Do you have some ideas about which kernel options I can try ?
Note that iommu is not used on this machine for now, but I plan
to use it now that the processor support it (several kvm virtual
machines are running, I would like to manage some hardware
directly in some VM)

  Regards,
Vincent

PS: the BIOS is up-to-date (with already two upgrades for one month)

I built upstream kernels 5.18.0 and 6.1.0 and both of them work for me.
Which makes life much more painful to find.

Bug#1029850: linux: Driver not loaded for ST Microelectronics LSM6DS3TR-C accelerometer (acpi:SMO8B30:SMO8B30:)

2023-01-29 Thread Darrell Kavanagh
I've been in touch with the maintainers of the st_lsm6dsx kernel module and
we've made good progress. In short, it is now working. See details below:

Hi Jonathan,

Thank you. The driver has evolved quite a bit in 6.2 (I read somewhere that
6.2 includes some i2c enhancements), but I adapted your changes to fit my
Debian 6.1 kernel and it works. Two IIO devices are created in sysfs,
iio-sensor-proxy.service starts up and automatic screen rotation in Gnome
just works.

To get the modules to load on boot, I made a small change to your code in
st_lsm6dsx_i2c to add the acpi alias to modules.alias:

adding a null element to st_lsm6dsx_i2c_acpi_match:
static const struct acpi_device_id st_lsm6dsx_i2c_acpi_match[] = {
 { "SMO8B30", ST_LSM6DS3TRC_ID, },
 { },
};
then:
   MODULE_DEVICE_TABLE(acpi, st_lsm6dsx_i2c_acpi_match);

dmesg shows:

[ 7366.120208] st_lsm6dsx_i2c i2c-SMO8B30:00: supply vdd not found, using

Is this a problem?

Thanks again.
