Bug#802718: lintian: Blank lines in a vendor profile cause errors for valid lines

2015-10-22 Thread DJ Stauffer

Package: lintian
Version: 2.5.30+deb8u4
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

  I created a vendor profile named main.profile with the following lines:

#start of profile file
Profile: test/main

Extends: debian/main
Disable-Tags: dir-or-file-in-opt
#end of profile file

I placed that file in the directory ~/.lintian/profiles/test

then ran:

  lintian --profile test {path to a .deb file}

The output was:

  Unknown field "disable-tags" in test/main (section 2) at
/usr/bin/lintian line 979.

If I remove the single blank line from the main.profile file, and run
the lintian

command again, the command succeeds.

The vendor profile example given in section 2.5.2.3 of the lintian
documentation

has a blank line in it. Also given that the man page for lintian says the
 --tags-from-file and --suppress-tags-from-file options both ignore blank
lines, I was expecting vendor profiles to do the same.

I am assuming this is not the indended outcome, and is therefore a bug.

In case it is of interest, I first discovered this on a system running
debian wheezy, and lintian version 2.5.10.4 (the outcome was the same
both on wheezy and jessie).

Yes, this is intentional behaviour. The profile must satisfy the format
of the "deb822" format.

> The vendor profile example given in section 2.5.2.3 of the lintian

The crucial part is /where/ the blank line is, or rather, which fields
are in what part of the file. A deb822 file consists of one or more
"paragraphs", which are separated by empty lines.
  The example in 2.5.2.3 has "Extends" and "Disable-Tags" in the "first
paragraph" ("Main profile paragraph"). The example you provided that
fails have them in the "second paragraph" (a "Tag alteration paragraph").

Sorry for the confusion, but the profile file is (and have always been)
an entirely different format.

Thanks,
~Niels

Bug#802725: lintian: add improved documentation for --display-level in man page

2015-10-22 Thread Matt Zagrabelny
Package: lintian
Version: 2.5.38
Severity: wishlist

Dear Maintainer,

Please consider adding more extensive documentation for the
--display-level option and other options that take similar arguments.

For instance:

[+|-|=][>=|>|<|<=][S|C|S/C]

How does the first set of symbols differ from the second set? What is
the difference between +, -, and = in the first set?

There are times when the first symbol is omitted. What does that mean?

The --default-display-level option says that it behaves exactly like
passing:

-L ">=important" -L "+>=normal/possible" -L "+minor/certain"

What does it mean to pass three incantations of -L to lintian? Under
what circumstances would/should you do this?

Thanks for improving lintian's documentation!

Cheers,

-m

Bug#802721: lintian: mojibake in HTML documentation

The HTML files in /usr/share/doc/lintian/lintian.html/ are written in
UTF-8, but they don't have any encoding declarations. This makes
Iceweasel display mojibake like "§5.1".

Bug#802729: lintian: please clarify whether "-L +=pedantic" is legal

2015-10-22 Thread Jakub Wilk

Package: lintian
Version: 2.5.38
Severity: minor

The manual page says that the syntax for -L is:

-L [+|-|=][>=|>|<|<=][S|C|S/C]

Later it says that --pedantic is equivalent to:

-L +=pedantic

But "+=" is not legal according to the aforementioned syntax; only
inequality operators are allowed after "+".
