2017-06-05 Thread Andreas Hoenen
Package: sponsorship-requests
Severity: important

Dear mentors,

I am looking for a sponsor for my package "dblatex"

  Package name: dblatex
  Version : 0.3.9-3
Upstream Author : Benoît Guillon <mars...@users.sourceforge.net>
  URL : http://dblatex.sourceforge.net/
  License : GPL V2+

Alternatively, one can download the package with dget using this command:

  dget -x
https://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/d/dblatex/dblatex_0.3.9-3.dsc

Changes since the last upload:

  * Fix upgrade errors when dist-upgrading from jessie to stretch:
+ Change the dependency from meanwhile virtual package
  texlive-math-extra to its successor texlive-science.
  Closes: #863683
+ Remove the call of command mktexlsr in postrm as it may be
temporarily unavailable when dblatex postrm is called and as it is
superfluous (mktexlsr gets called via a trigger anyway).
+ Remove postinst as it consists only of the problematic and
  superfluous mktexlsr call.
Thanks to all the people who helped to analyze and to resolve this
problem. Closes: #863890

It's quite important that this fix gets included into stretch, as it
will avoid jessie-stretch upgrade problems for systems with dblatex
installed. Thus shamelessly adding those to cc: who have been involved
in analyzing and resolving this problem until now.

Thanks, Andreas

Hi Gianfranco,

first nitpick: not needed to upload a -2 version. using the same -1
is fine and works until the real upload (on Debian ftp-master) is
 performed

I'm used to be very careful (you could also say: paranoid) regarding
publishing: never publish anything changed under the same release number
as before, even if it's only a release candidate on mentors.

But as this seems to be overdone, I will merge the two changelog
sections and return to 0.3.7-1 on my next upload.

Here I disagree again: dblatex-examples.tar.bz2 has been uploaded one
time (in 2009) to SourceForge and hasn't changed since then, the archive
is not versioned at all. Thus IMHO it's overkill to use a separate
package for this small, static add-on.

mmm what does it happen if they gets updated and you miss it because
there is no uscan detecting them?

I see that the watch file already takes care of them, unfortunately they
are not versioned, so we might not catch an update there...

this is usually bad, maybe ping upstream about adding an 1.0 somewhere
to avoid people missing examples updates
(but here we might really don't care about examples 10 years old never
 updated)

I'd suggest asking him to add a version number to the *next* examples
update (which I don't expect to happen soon). That should be enough,
shouldn't it?

BTW you might also use pypi to fetch your sources from
 http://pypi.debian.net/dblatex

(there is also a watch file for the source tarball, you might want to use
it and add the examples part)

Interesting service (didn't know about it), but I don't understand: what
is the advantage over querying SourceForge directly? The latter is the
URL always given in the upstream release mails, thus I regard it as the
canonical source.

 Some other nitpicks:
I see you runtime-depends on python-apt, not sure why, but please consider
 adding it to the

install_requires section of setup.py and let python:Depends do its job :)

As setup.py is contributed by upstream, I don't want to add a patch just
to replace the rules dependency. However I will ask upstream to add the
install_requires section in the next upstream release, then I can drop
the rules dependency.

Any more loose ends? Otherwise I would merely do a merged upload under
the original version numer, as explained above.

Bug#795771: RFS: dblatex/0.3.7-1

2015-08-23 Thread Andreas Hoenen
control: retitle RFS: dblatex/0.3.7-2

Gianfranco Costamagna costamagnagianfra...@yahoo.it wrote:

Hi Gianfranco,

thanks again for your review. I have uploaded dblatex-0.3.7-2 to
mentors:

http://mentors.debian.net/package/dblatex

Alternatively, one can download the package with dget using this command:

  dget -x http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/d/dblatex/dblatex_0.3.=
7-1.dsc

Regarding your findings:

 let's review:
 1) please use a machine-readable copyright file

Sorry to disagree with your first suggestion (terrible start, I know):

Using a machine-readable copyright file is optional according to section
12.5.1 of the Debian Policy Manual. In contrast to this idea I prefer
to keep as close to the upstream copyright file as possible, thus simply
diffing the upstream with the Debian file is enough to keep the latter
synchronized with the former.

 http://www.debian.org/doc/packaging-manuals/copyright-format/1.0/
 2) d/compat: please bump to 9

Happy to comply, done.

 3) d/control: you might want to run wrap-and-sort to clean the formatting=
 up,
to bump debhelper to =3D9 and to remove some already satisfied in oldsta=
ble version constraints.

Thanks for pointing me to wrap-and-sort, it's a nice tool. Done.

 4) d/rules: please prepend comments in overrides with a tab instead of =
spaces
(vim is really showing them in a bad way)

That means sending the comments to the shell for evaluation, which is
superfluous (although it does no harm). When doing so, the lines look
bad in emacs, as they are marked in warning style (that is pink
background with my color scheme). The reason for the warning as found
in make-mode.el.gz:

;; Highlight shell comments that Make treats as commands,
;; since these can fool people.

Anyway, I'm happy to comply and have changed according to your
suggestion.

 5) d/rules:
I do not see the reason for get-orig-source target. if uscan works,
what is the pourpose of it?

I have moved the retrieval of the examples tarball to the watch file and
eliminated the get-orig-source target and all related stuff. Indeed
this simplifies the rules file remarkably.

 6) d/rules: examples should belong to dh_installexamples not to dh_instal=
ldocs (unless
 I'm missing something)

You're right, done.

 7) d/rules: I would add something like --buildsystem=3Dpybuild to the d=
efault dh call.

Done.

 8) if the examples are the reason for the get-orig-source target, and if =
upstream ships them
in a different source tarball, please then consider a package split

Here I disagree again: dblatex-examples.tar.bz2 has been uploaded one
time (in 2009) to SourceForge and hasn't changed since then, the archive
is not versioned at all. Thus IMHO it's overkill to use a separate
package for this small, static add-on.

 9) d/rules: mv debian/dblatex/usr/share/doc/dblatex/xhtml debian/dblatex/=
usr/share/doc/dblatex/html

it is nice to current don't break existing installations, but I would ins=
tead create a symlink,
rather than breaking the new installations (assuming some users might hav=
e compiled the documentation
 on their own.

man dh_link might be useful there

Good idea, done.

would you mind fixing the above?

As you see, I've been happy to implement many of your findings, however
I disagree with your vote on the machine-readable copyright file and on
the package split. I hope that you will nevertheless consider to
sponsor this upload, although I would also understand if you forbear
From=20sponsoring as you don't agree with my packaging decisions.

However you decide, thank you honestly for your review time and for your
valuable feedback, I have enjoyed improving dblatex's packaging.

Where does clean1 target come from now? I don't see any reason for it.

Just taken from the example in the manual page DPATCH.MAKE(7). I think
the reason for this indirect approach is as follows:

build-stamp: patch-stamp

causes patch-stamp to be executed as first action before the build-stamp
commands get executed. Symmetrical to this the construct

clean: clean1 unpatch
clean1:

causes unpatch to be executed as last action after all clean1 commands.
Whereas

clean: unpatch

means unpatch being executed before the clean commands. For dblatex it
seems to be a matter of taste, as the stack approach is not needed.
Thus adapted.

I think it is cleaner not to have things like if [ -f
debian/lintian.overrides ] in debian/rules. You know whether there is
lintian override when you create package.

My argumentation is as follows: For some releases I need overrides, for
others not. I prefer to change only one location (overrides file
itself) than additionally the rules file. But this seems to be
  arguable. Thus changed.

It's better to fix reason why you need override than adding one on so,e
 releases.

In general you are right, however I added the override for a false
positive from lintian [1]. (Although there Russ Allberry seems to
advise not to override lintian bugs.) Of course I prefer obeying
packaging standards to overriding warnings about real violations. ;-)

And one more note - watch file could be simplified to this and use
 uscan support for sourceforge:

RFS: dblatex: long term / current release 0.2.8-3

2008-01-19 Thread Andreas Hoenen
Dear mentors,

as my default sponsor recently has not found the time for sponsoring,
and as he agrees I should better search another sponsor - well, here I
am :-)

Currently I'm the maintainer of dblatex [1] and co-maintainer of
apt-show-versions [2]. Thus my involvement is limited, but I set a high
value on doing my job properly and long-ranging - thus I only take over
a package if I'm really and durable interested. a-s-v is sponsored by
the package owner (as a native package it's his child), thus
sponsoring is needed for dblatex. Current release awaiting upload is
0.2.8-3 on mentors.debian.net [3].

At the moment I have no plans to become a DD, being confident with my
current level of involvement. This might change sometime, but I won't
count on it. On the other hand, I'm definitely interested in becoming a
DM - it looks convenient for all parties and expresses trust in my
packaging. But that is second-rank, first priority is to get dblatex
releases published in a timely manner, which is my reponsibility to its
users.

To finalize my advertisement: the dblatex package is not very
complicated (architecture all), with a frequency of at most one release
per month. However, IMHO it's a useful and important package, being the
sole DocBook-PDF tool in Debian main. And although I'm making
packaging mistakes, usually I learn and avoid repeating them. My GPG
key is signed by one DD, thus I'm basically connected to the web of
trust.

I hope to have given a picture clear enough to base a sponsoring
decision upon. Thus, if someone is interested, I really would be glad.

Now there's just one last minor problem: since you closed some bugs on
0.2.8-1 which never got uploaded, you would have to close them manually
as the automatic bug handling wouldn't be triggered for them.

I don't know if there's anything on mentors.d.o that stops you from
doing this, but I'd personally say you don't need to bump versions
before the package actually gets into the archive, so you could just
stick with '-1' for a Debian version, so merging the changelog entries
 should do the trick.

To explain my version bump:

I rememer a thread on this mailing list starting with [1] that discussed
the issue of reusing the same version number for different uploads to
mentors.debian.net. Most participants agreed to use a new version
number for each upload. I like this approach, as m.d.n. is public, thus
somehow the upload to m.d.n already is a form of distribution. And it
gets quite confusing if there exist different distributions with the
same version number.

Leo, thanks for your upload as well as for your feedback.

RFS: dblatex (updated package): 2nd try

2007-12-15 Thread Andreas Hoenen
Dear mentors,

what shall I say for advertisement? I think dblatex is not an
unimportant package, AFAIK it's the only free, working DocBook-PDF tool
in Debian. Moreover, the current Debian version (0.2.6-1) is quite
outdated as sadly 0.2.7-1 did not get sponsored. Thus I would really
appreciate if someone could sponsor the new version.

Thanks, Andreas

Hello Leo,

thank you very much for your feedback. It seems that another pair of

I am fairly inexperienced with docbook and python policy, but here are a
few remarks that I hope make sense:

 - the package adds a Makefile on '/usr/share/dblatex/tests/mathml/'

You're right. The whole subtree tests/ is superfluous for running
dblatex. No need to install it.

 - I'm not sure the lintian override for the changelog line length is
necessary; you could just mention bug # on the sourceforge tracker.
Using the override could mask a future line length issue, and even
though this is certainly something minor, I personally don't think it's
 worth it.

I don't find a search possibility for SourceForge bugs that is
independent of a project. Maybe just being blind... Anyway, the SF
dblatex project tracker can be used, thus you are right: the link can be
omitted. (By the way, I had the intention to remove the override with
the next release, as the check only applies to the most recent release.)

 - the wrapper in /usr/bin seems strange, isn't there a better way to
implement this? The way I see it, it makes the script in
 /usr/share/dblatex a bit redundant.

The other way around, /usr/share/dblatex/scripts/dblatex is superfluous.
My fault, the native installation procedure uses this file as a template
for creating /usr/local/bin/dblatex, but naturally does not install the
template itself. (This has gone unnoticed due to a bug in my check
script for comparing native with debian install contents :-( )

 - perhaps you could remove the sourceforge site link from the
description? It's linked from the homepage.

Ok.

Overall, I'd say doing a quick check with debc, aside from lintian is
always a good idea, but the package seems good.

After you take a look at these issues (or just justify them) I can
sponsor you, if no one with more expertise in this sort of package pops
 up until - let's say - monday.

Thanks, great!

The first pair could just be symlinked from the established place, and
then adding support to parse an additional per-user directory is just a
 goody.

Thanks for your solution, it works as expected. I have adapted the
package accordingly (without the goody for the moment), thus now
configuration file handling should be Debian policy compliant.

RFS: dblatex - Produces DVI, PostScript, PDF documents from DocBook sources

2006-02-01 Thread Andreas Hoenen
Hello,

I'm searching for a sponsor for the following package:

* Package name: dblatex
  Version : 0.1.8
Upstream Author : Benoit Guillon [EMAIL PROTECTED]
* URL : http://dblatex.sourceforge.net/
* License : GPL
Description : Produces DVI, PostScript, PDF documents from DocBook sources

DocBook to LaTeX Publishing that transforms your SGML/XML DocBook documents to
DVI, PostScript or PDF by translating them in pure LaTeX as a first process.
MathML 2.0 markups are supported, too. It originally started as a clone of
DB2LaTeX, but has been enhanced extensively since then and is actively
maintained by the upstream author.

The source package is found at http://mentors.debian.net/ It is Lintian
and Linda clean and builds with pbuilder. The ITP is numbered #350397.

Benoit Guillon, the package's upstream maintainer, is informed and
agrees on getting dblatex packaged into Debian.

For discussions whether or not dblatex should be included into Debian,
you might be interested in the mail threads:
-
http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/debian-xml-sgml-pkgs/2006-January/001680.html

One package problem is remaining, where the upstream author and me
would appreciate advice from a sponsor:

At the moment there exist two configuration directories, where the user
can place additional configuration files/subdirectories - called
specifications and styles - besides the predefined ones:

- /usr/share/xml/docbook/stylesheet/dblatex/latex/specs/
- /usr/share/xml/docbook/stylesheet/dblatex/latex/contrib/

These additional files/subdirectories must be left alone at any package
upgrade/removal, and their location looks problematic inside a Debian
system. What about system wide and user's configuration directories
like:

- /etc/dblatex/{specs|contrib}/
- ~/.dblatex/{specs|contrib}/

dblatex would have to scan these directories in addition to the original
ones where its own specifications/styles stay located.

The upstream author has indicated that he might adapt his sources after
an agreement upon a sound solution. (Benoit, please correct me if I
have misinterpreted you.) This just needs to be discussed with an
Debian expert (or in this public forum).

Thank you for your attention,

Andreas
