Your explanation implies, it won't be must or should, so I can conclude may or no reference at all? Hi again, in my understanding, there is no plan to promote the machine-readable format for debian/copyright defined by DEP 5 in the Debian policy. I think that a good parallel is the format of the Debian changelog. It now became so common that it would be disruptive to change it, and therefore alternative formats were eventually removed from Policy in 2009. I think that the machine-readable debian/copyright format specified in DEP 5 is far from that point. DEP-5 requirements (was: Re: RFS: pygtkplot)

Therefore, my package does not contain debian/copyright file using DEP-5 either. just in case it was still unclear, despite of Vincent's reply: debian/copyright is mandatory [1], its format not. Technically you are allowed to formulate the file as you want, as long as it is there and has all information needed [2][3]. DEP-5 is a draft for now, but may end up as a official policy at some point. As Vincent says, it is widely used for all newly introduced packages and mandatory for some sponsors. Dear Arno and everybody, DEP 5 will be distributed in the debian-policy package (see #609160), but there is not plan of making it part of the Policy, in the sense of being mandatory or strongly recommended. The Policy, and the licenses themselves, set some requirements on how to document copyrights and licenses in Debian packages, and DEP 5 provides a format to do this in a machine-readable way. Also, there is another player in the field, the SPDX format (http://spdx.org/), that would be equally good for debian/copyright, although given its fine granularity, I do not expect to see it used often in Debian packages when it is not used upstream.
