RFS: agedu (updated package)
Dear mentors, I am looking for a sponsor for the new version 8928-2 of my package agedu. This update is a simple version bump, and conversion to use the new 3.0 (quilt) source format. It builds these binary packages: agedu - a Unix utility for tracking down wasted disk space The package appears to be lintian clean. The package can be found on mentors.debian.net: - URL: http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/a/agedu - Source repository: deb-src http://mentors.debian.net/debian unstable main contrib non-free - dget http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/a/agedu/agedu_8928-2.dsc I would be glad if someone uploaded this package for me. Re: RFS: agedu (updated package)
Hello, It's probably best if I use the version number 8928-1 instead of 8928-2 to prevent confusion. (8928-1 used to be an intermediary step in my own packaging process). Quoting Alexander Prinsier aphe...@mailhaven.com: Is there nobody who wants to sponsor this upload? It's a really basic package, no oddities :) I took a look at this. First, the changelog doesn't say it's a new upstream version, which it appears to be. Second, are the debian/changelog items in the latest entry really what has changed upstream? If so they shouldn't be in debian/changelog. Colin -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-mentors-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact listmas...@lists.debian.org

Hello, Thanks for taking a look! Colin Tuckley schreef: First, the changelog doesn't say it's a new upstream version, which it appears to be. I thought this was evident, because of the version number. I'll fix it and add an explicit entry. Second, are the debian/changelog items in the latest entry really what has changed upstream? If so they shouldn't be in debian/changelog. Yes some are. I thought I'd list the most important changes, so that users have an easier time upgrading, knowing what 'defaults' were changed (the package itself doesn't have a changelog, except for the subversion log...). But the one that closes the bug should be there anyway right? I'll remove those other changelog entries and re-upload in a few hours. Thanks! Hello, On Fri, 29 May 2009, Alexander Prinsier wrote: Anything else that keeps my package from getting sponsored?;) Uploading! I'm uploading the package. However, you should find a different way to handle the manpage patches in the long run. - send those patches upstream so they can be incorporated into the upstream source. This would be the ideal way. - (possibly in parallel) use some sort of patch management like quilt to manage Debian patches in debian/patches and push the patches into the quilt series. The latter will be useful in case upstream is slow to incorporate these fixes and/or there are other patches which are required for the Debian package. Kapil Hari Paranjape wrote: Uploading! Great! I'm uploading the package. However, you should find a different way to handle the manpage patches in the long run. Yes, indeed. I'll send them upstream soon. For the next version/update I'll put the patches in quilt or dpatch. PS: can I bother you when I have an update available for agedu or should I mail to debian-mentors again? PS2: for DD's, is it customary to upload a new version to unstable even if it only fixes a small issue? Or should small issues be batched into one update? Couldn't find an answer on this in the Debian policy. As I have to work through a sponsor (for now...) I'll evidently try to batch my updates together ;) Thanks again, Alexander -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-mentors-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Hello, On Fri, 29 May 2009, Alexander Prinsier wrote: PS: can I bother you when I have an update available for agedu or should I mail to debian-mentors again? You could email to me with a cc to debian-mentors. It may just happen that I am unavailable at the time and someone else will sponsor the package if you send a copy to debian-mentors. PS2: for DD's, is it customary to upload a new version to unstable even if it only fixes a small issue? Or should small issues be batched into one update? Couldn't find an answer on this in the Debian policy. There is no one formula to fit this. If you think that the package looks bad without this fix and/or there is a release/freeze coming up then it is better to fix even small-ish issues. On the other hand if there is a lot of upstream flux or the package is new and is likely to draw a lot of comments/bugs then it may be better to wait so as to incorporate all these as well. Regards, Kapil. P.S. There was a discussion on what fixes are too small on debian-mentors a couple of months ago but I couldn't locate it in my mailbox! -- signature.asc Description: Digital signature

If you have a fix prepared but don't want to upload a new version immediately, file a bug to prevent the broken package from migrating to testing. That way you can batch small fixes without torturing testing users or having to do an upload to testing (good luck when it's not freeze time). -- Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. ,= ,-_-. =. b...@iguanasuicide.net ((_/)o o(\_)) ICQ: 514984 YM/AIM: DaTwinkDaddy `-'(. .)`-' http://iguanasuicide.net/\_/ signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.

Or should small issues be batched into one update? Couldn't find an answer on this in the Debian policy. It depends. Especially it depends on the size (and buildtime) of the package compared to the size of the issue. I might upload some of my small packages for a typo fix in the description, whereas large packages that takes 2-4 days to build on a slower arch, and a 1-2 months release schedule only on rc bugs gets uploaded in between the upstream releases. Thanks for taking a look at the package! I believe I addressed all the issues correctly in the version I just uploaded now. See below for details :) Kapil Hari Paranjape wrote: The package appears to be lintian clean. Appearances are deceptive. :-) Run a recent version of lintian with the -iIv options to see more! Oh I only used -i :) I fixed the additional warnings, see below. - the manpage uses a hyphen instead of a minus sign Indeed, I corrected those. - there is no debian/watch file Yes, this also bothered me ;) The website of the program only puts a direct link to a file. There is no directory index containing all versions that uscan would be able to parse. So I believe I cannot build a correct watch file. As lintian suggested I created an empty watch file with a comment inside to explain this situation. I hope this is ok? - the standards version is 3.8.0 whereas it should be 3.8.1 There don't see to be changes that apply to my packaging, so I just incremented the Standards-Version to 3.8.1 now. - The word Copyright or the unicode copyright symbol should appear in the copyright file Fixed that now. P.S. It would be nice if the key with which you sign the dsc file was in some public place like the keyrings at keys.gnupg.net or pgp.mit.edu Oops, I wasn't aware it didn't spread yet...
