I have created a package 02-01-05+dfsg1-2 that is of the current
02-01-05 plus the fix for bug 685839. However I have not uploaded it to

not look further into why that was, but just changed to rsync. If you
think that is abuse I can investigate the svn issue again.

Well, as I've said it's not wrong to use rsync here but it feels a bit weird
when reading the packaging the first time as using rsync somewhat suggests
that there may be stuff pulled from the net which of course would be a
no-go. After reading more into the matter it's perfectly clear that you use
it only to shuffle around files locally but that was where my comment came
from. I'll leave it up to you to decide what's the best version for your
package. I could also think of using two tar processes with pipe in between
to achieve the same result. That's the great benefit of having so many
different (and valid) solution in the open source world!

I put leading zeroes in my version number thinking that in future if I
went from 2.9 to 2.10 it would be considered as a lower version
somewhere. Perhaps my 3 part version number is a bit excessive.

I'm quite sure that you may be interested in this:
$ dpkg --compare-versions 2.9.1-1 lt 2.10.1-1echo ok
ok
$

and luckily also:
$ dpkg --compare-versions 02.09.1-1 lt 2.10.1-1echo ok
ok
$

So sorry but I can't buy that excuse. ;-)

I am not sure what is so bad about a relative classpath in a jar file. I
can get rid of the duplicate icon file.

Feeding the warning into lintian-info I read:
N:
N: The classpath listed in the jar file refers to a potential missing jar
N: file. This could be the remnants of a build-time classpath that are
N: not relevant for a JAR bundled in a Debian package.
N:
N: Alternatively, the classpath may be correct, but the package is
N: lacking a jar file or a symlink to it.
N:
N: Note, Lintian assumes that all (relative) classpaths pointing to
N: /usr/share/java/ (but not subdirs thereof) are satisfied by
N: dependencies as long as there is at least one strong libX-java
N: dependency.
N:
N: Severity: normal, Certainty: possible
N:
N: Check: java, Type: binary
N:

So if you can confirm this is not a problem as explained by lintian you may
want to put an override and have this ignored from now on.

Yes, mentors or another location your sponsor can fetch and sponsor it

As a side note it seems the DEP-5 Format URL is broken even though it's

 Anyway, built, signed, uploaded.

As a side note it seems the DEP-5 Format URL is broken even though it's

It does, yes. You should not need to remove the package on mentors.d.n

Your rules file contains:

%:
dh --with quilt $@

that is, you explicitly invoke dh_quilt. This is not needed for you,
using the 3.0 (quilt) format which implicitly uses quilt. Hence it
should be safe to remove the --with-quilt flag for you.

This is also what Lintian is catching.

Thank you Arno for your assistance.
I have uploaded a new version of jampal, 02.01.05-1
All problems previously noted have been fixed.

The lintian appears to be clean
lintian -I --pedantic jampal_02.01.05-1.dsc
gives no error.

I am looking for a sponsor for my package jampal.

* Package name: jampal
  Version : 02.01.05-1
Upstream Author : I am the upstream author. Peter Bennett
pgbenn...@comcast.net.
* URL : http://jampal.sourceforge.net
* License : GPLv3 or higher
  Section : sound

It builds these binary packages:
tagbkup- back up and restore mp3 tags
jampal - mp3 song library management system and player

I am using wheezy/sid x86_64

My motivation for maintaining this package is: I believe this can be a
very useful system for people with large collections of mp3 music files.
It has many features not available with any other program.

The package can be found on mentors.debian.net:
- URL: http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/contrib/j/jampal
- Source repository: deb-src http://mentors.debian.net/debian unstable
main contrib non-free
- dget

I would be glad if someone uploaded this package for me.

Please copy pgbenn...@comcast.net on any emails.

Kind regards
 Peter Bennett

Hi Benoît

I am about to release a new version of jampal, and I have addressed most
of these issues (see below) in my latest debian build. However I still
have a couple of questions.
I am using wheezy/sid x86_64
This is the lintian report
lintian -I --pedantic *.dsc
P: jampal source: unneeded-build-dep-on-quilt

I still have the quilt in there in case I need to apply some patches. Is
this OK or should I remove the dependency?

I am not sure what to do about the copyright on ID3v2. It is not a
license, and it is not code that is copyright. This is documentation
that I have included from ID3v2 in the help files. It makes sense that
the documentation cannot be changed since it describes a standard.
Perhaps the copyright statement for the documentation should not be
included in the debian/copyright file?

I reviewed your package, and here's a list of things that could be
 improved:

   - Your debian/watch file currently matches the upstream version
'build-Linux-x86_64-02.01.04', which is not what you want; you need
to refine it; also, this file shouldn't be executable.

   - lintian -I --pedantic jampal_02.01.03-1.dsc reports the following:

   P: jampal source: source-contains-svn-commit-file svn-commit.2.tmp
   P: jampal source: source-contains-svn-commit-file svn-commit.tmp
   P: jampal source: source-contains-prebuilt-windows-binary
 misc/windows-32/mbrola.exe
   P: jampal source: source-contains-prebuilt-windows-binary
 misc/windows-32/pttsjni.dll
   P: jampal source: source-contains-prebuilt-windows-binary
 misc/windows-32/libgcc_s_dw2-1.dll
   P: jampal source: source-contains-prebuilt-windows-binary
 misc/windows-32/ptts.exe
   P: jampal source: unneeded-build-dep-on-quilt
   W: jampal source: out-of-date-standards-version 3.9.1.0 (current is
 3.9.2)

   - debian/copyright: I don't think ID3V2 is a free license; it doesn't
seem to allow modifications, only redistribution. Also, you may want
to upgrade to the latest DEP-5 revision.

   - debian/control: you recommend openoffice packages, it seems
overkill. The Recommends field should list packages that would be
found together with this one in all but unusual installations [1],
would you say it's the case here?

 [1]
 http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-relationships.html#s-binarydeps

Your long description seems a bit convoluted and you repeat the
words the library a lot. Also, your spelling of ID3v2 is not
consistent. Have a look at [2] for the best practices.

 [2]
 http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/developers-reference/best-pkging-practices.html#bpp-debian-control

   - debian/patches: if you're upstream, you shouldn't have any patches
here, you can merge them directly.

   - debhelper compatibility level should be 8 (in debian/compat and
 debian/control).

 Cheers,

Regarding openoffice, I am removing it from the dependency lists. It is

I shall be creating a new package soon.

Please see [1]. The VCS should point to the version control system YOU

the upstream repository.

If you are maintaining this stuff in a Sourceforge repository from you,
that's fine and point there then. Otherwise I'd suggest you to go with

Hi Peter,

Peter Bennett wrote:

I will take care of these and get a new package uploaded.

You're welcome. Thanks for your work on this package.

Regarding openoffice.org - the envelope command creates an openoffice
or libreoffice write document. Also there are some sample spreadsheets
in openoffice format. You can certainly use most of the features without
open office. I will remove it as a recommended package.

Maybe you can change it to a Suggests, but keep in mind that openoffice
isn't the only application that can read the OpenDocument format.

Regarding patches to upstream - it is a lot of work to release a new
upstream version, and I would not want to do that just to fix an issue
with Debian that does not affect other non-Debian users. In that case I
may include patches, which would be rolled into the next upstream
 version. Does this make sense?

That makes perfect sense, thanks for clarifying.

Cheers,

glad to see you fixed most of the problems I addressed last time. Thank

This time I have some minor, mostly cosmetic issues only but please note
I didn't extensively review your package. I was just looking how you are
doing. Here we go:

* Your standards version is still outdated. Please push to 3.9.2 after
verifying eventual changes [1]
* Please remove the VCS links in your control file if you don't use it.
Even better it would be, if you would use a VCS for Debian related
packaging though :)
* Another thing I mentioned last time is to eventually push debhelper
compatibility level to version 8 (in debian/compat and debian/control).
This is the recommended version as of today.
* Benoît already mentioned the concerns about OpenOffice I addressed
last time as well [2]. You can certainly recommend it if you believe
this is the way to go, see [3] for the precise meaning of package
relationships. However you still need to exchange OpenOffice by
LibreOffice. Its the latter which is in Debian now.
* The long description of tagbkup (glad you made a dedicated package for
it!) contains something like (use the -cm option, see below) which was
probably extracted from a manual or so. Please rework the description
since neither the switch should be explained in the description field
not does below exist at all.

Re: RFS: Jampal (2nd try)

2011-07-03 Thread Peter Bennett
Hi Benoît

Thank you for taking the time to review this.
I will take care of these and get a new package uploaded.

Regarding openoffice.org - the envelope command creates an openoffice
or libreoffice write document. Also there are some sample spreadsheets
in openoffice format. You can certainly use most of the features without
open office. I will remove it as a recommended package.

Regarding patches to upstream - it is a lot of work to release a new
upstream version, and I would not want to do that just to fix an issue
with Debian that does not affect other non-Debian users. In that case I
may include patches, which would be rolled into the next upstream
version. Does this make sense?

Regards
Peter

RFS: Jampal 02.01.04 New Package

2011-06-05 Thread Peter Bennett
Dear mentors,

I am looking for a sponsor for my package jampal.
I have fixed errors that were pointed out to me after the
previous attempt.

* Package name: jampal
  Version : 02.01.04-1
Upstream Author : I am the upstream author. Peter Bennett

The package appears to be lintian clean.

My motivation for maintaining this package is: I believe this can be a
very useful system for people with large collections of mp3 music files.
It has many features not available with any other program.

The package can be found on mentors.debian.net:
- URL: http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/contrib/j/jampal
- Source repository: deb-src http://mentors.debian.net/debian unstable main
contrib non-free
- dget
http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/contrib/j/jampal/jampal_02.01.04-1.dsc

I would be glad if someone uploaded this package for me.

Please copy pgbenn...@comcast.net on any emails.

Kind regards
 Peter Bennett

Hi Peter,

please reply with the debian-mentors list in CC (at least). This helps
other people to keep track. You can, but you don't need to address me
personally as I'm subscribed there as well.

On 15.05.2011 16:56, Peter Bennett wrote:

 understanding.

You don't need to know (almost) anything about quilt. A native package
is still wrong, as those are native /to Debian/, that is where no
upstream does exist at all. All other packages have to be non native
(being in 3.0 format or not).

The only difference, as of your point of view is, you have to provide an
unmodified orig.tar.gz packaging one of your releases, the 3.0/quilt
format merges with a debian directory you provide along. Note the debian
directory is automatically stripped from the upstream tarball if it
exists. This is because it is discouraged to maintain the Debian
packaging directly at upstream's VCS (i.e. yours).

Since i was building a native package this seemed the correct thing.

You would still not put any release history there which was never
released as a Debian package. Please compare with the dpkg [1] changelog
which is a (real) native package.

There is one command that uses lame, it is not a major part of the
package.
I could take out lame and mention that restriction in the man page.

Fair enough. All I wanted to say is, you can't distribute your package
in Debian while you depend (or recommend) lame.

Open Office is used by the CD cover printing command and I included
some example spreadsheets for Open Office that allow for updating of
 tags by spreadsheet.

Sounds like a good example for recommends, indeed. Maybe you find some
lighter alternatives, but this is definitively not a must have.

Ok. I mention 40,000 songs as an example, perhaps I have to be clearer.

Maybe not in particular clearer, but more general.

The postinst script for update-menu I added because lintian complained
 it was needed,
 although my experience showed otherwise.

Oh, ok. As said I don't know about desktop applications. More important
is the #DEBHELPER# hook which is used as place holder for debhelper
commands which can add their own hooks there.

Actually ptts is not being built. I should probably remove the source.
It is a windows program that goes with the windows version of jampal.

Please do so. Note, if you don't want to drop Windows support for you
upstream as well, you may want to repack the source tarball for Debian
(learn about DFSG tarballs on [2]). This is required for Debian if you
target main as this has to be self-contained. That is, it must be able
to reproduce your source package entirely with packages available in
main already.

Same may hold for other libraries/utilities you
 bundle (§ 4,13 [6]).

tagbkup is a utility command that is bundled with jampal and used for
some of the jampal commands. Perhaps it should be packaged separately.

Yep. See my policy reference.

Sound Video is how Ubuntu sets up its menu structure. I actually
built this for
Ubuntu but submitted here to see if it could get into Ubuntu through the
 Debian process.

Apparently not :)

Hi Peter,

some comments about your package. Note I'm no DD, so I can't sponsor
you, therefore my suggestions may not be effectual for you. Note your
package is not distributable in Debian as is (see below).

* You built a native package, that's wrong (if you would have native
package you would know :)). Learn more on [1]

* You seem to use a merged changelog for your upstream changes and
Debian related changes. Note this is not the intention of
debian/changelog. The Debian changelog should highlight changes when
compared to the upstream (source) distribution [2].

* You seem not to have filed an ITP for your package. Please do that if
you want to introduce your application to Debian. This is to tell other
people someone is working on a given package to avoid waste of
resources. Learn more about ITPs on WNPP [3]

* You Standards version is outdated, please bump to 3.9.2(.0)

* Your binary dependencies are redundant (you have put openjdk-6-jre
twice) and you depend on lame. Lame is not in Debian and since you have
this as dependency, your package is not suitable at all to Debian. I'd
suggest you to use another (available) alternative. Moreover I'm not
entirely sure why you recommend Open-Office.org (maybe you could
elaborate?). There is no OpenOffice in Debian anymore - please depend on
Libre Office instead

* Your synopsis line needs some improvements. Notably it should start
with a lower case character [4]. Your long description reads fine, but
I'm unsure why it would make sense to point out you/one can manage
exactly 40k songs with it.

* Your maintainer script miss the DEBHELPER hook, please leave that
untouched from the template or add it again. Someone being familiar with
desktop applications might also be able to tell, whether a postinst
script is really supposed to call update-menu. afaict there is a hook
for it (but I'm unsure)

* You should rework your rules file. While it does not look terribly
wrong you are really suggested to use debhelper scripts, for instance to
install changelog (dh_installchangelogs), docs and so on. While doing
you could also think about switching to dh 8 (debhelper(7)/dh(1)). This
also includes to give the dpkg build tools a hint about your
compatibility mode (debian/compat file).

* You don't include a watch file [5]. This is not strictly required though.

* Your debian/copyright file looks good, but it seems to be a scary mix
between DEP-5 and traditional copyright files. It does not look entirely
wrong, but there are some files without copyright statement. You should
fix this for files you are authoritative (i.e. the author), e.g.
tagbkup/build.sh. How are files like ptts/pgbennett_speech_Speaker.h
generated?

* What is tagbkup/? That looks like a bundled library. It is a policy
violation to build a binary packages with bundled libraries. Moreover
this is C code and therefore not platform independent (you specified
architecture: any). Same may hold for other libraries/utilities you
bundle (§ 4,13 [6]).

* Your package is not Lintian clean:
