Joining the Debian Python Team

2024-07-22 Thread Alexandru Mihail
Hey,

I would like to join the debian-python packaging team.
I am already the package maintainer for
https://salsa.debian.org/debian/mini-httpd and have also been
contributing to the wiki for some years:
https://wiki.debian.org/AlexandruMihail

Why you want to join the team: e.g. maintain your current packages
within the team, help maintain some specific packages, etc:

I intend to package https://github.com/astrofrog/psrecord and possibly
more useful python related things in the future.

Joining the Debian Python Team

2024-01-30 Thread Daniel Teichmann

Hey,

I wanna join the debian-python packaging team.

I've got Mike Gabriel, who will be my teacher guiding me through my way
to become a Debian Maintainer.
I already have got a bit of experience with Debian Packaging (especially
in the Debian Edu realm).

You can see that on my salsa profile.

I am online in the #debian-python IRC channel too, you can ping me
there, if you have questions.

2022-11-01 Thread Alper Nebi Yasak
Hi,

I'm packaging "depthcharge-tools", a Python project of mine that manages
the ChromeOS bootloader to make Debian natively bootable on Chromebooks.
My sponsor already cloned it to the python-team/packages Salsa namespace
and uploaded it to NEW with the Python Team as Maintainer. I want to
join the team to keep maintaining it as part of the team.

My salsa account name is "alpernebbi".

I have read and accept the Debian Python Team Policy:

Also, I have requested access to the cloned repo, please accept it:

Hello,

I just packaged docarray for Debian and plan to package jina, a reverse
dependency of docarray soon. As these are python packages I would like to join
the python team and maintain these packages under the team. I initially tried
going through Debian mentors and submitted an RFS for docarray but they
suggested I join the python team and do it through the team.

joining the python team

2022-06-25 Thread Étienne Mollier
Ehlo,

I would like to address #953053 affecting psychopy, under Debian
Med team. For parts of the package to operate properly, they
require several missing python dependencies. I noted some are
already under RFP, and one ITP. I would be happy to join the
team to help adding these packages and maintain them on the long
run. In exchange, I may pop up from time to time to help sort
random issues in various python packages.

Some random facts:
  * my salsa login is emollier;
  * I have read a debian python team policy document at [1] and
I agree to adhere to it;
  * I also happen to have hit the wiki page, but have not
followed all the links, yet[2];
  * I have plain quilt burned in my fingers but now that I read
about gbp pq, I will try to learn it;
  * I subscribed to the debian-python@l.d.o mailing list;
  * I also have joined the team on tracker.debian.org[3] to get
contacts, bugs, etc;
  * I am a DD.

Hi team,

I would like to join the Debian Python Team to maintain my python
packages within the team. I'm currently maintaining paperwork [1] and
its dependencies in an ad-hoc team [2] but I would like to move the
python packages to the DPT for team maintaining.

I still plan to maintain them myself but I would like to join the team

I'm still a Debian Maintainer and I also would like to take advantage
of this opportunity to ask for future advocates when I'll apply (I hope
soon, it's well overdue) for Debian Developer.

I have read and accept the Debian Python Team Policy

Sorry for the delayed reply. Thanks for the offer, we'd love to have
your help in the team.

However, I'm not going to add you to the team, immediately.
I'd recommend getting started by contributing Merge Requests in Salsa
and patches through the bug tracking system, or adopting some orphaned
packages, and getting some experience maintaining them. Ideally finding
some mentors to help you out, along the way. You can get uploads
sponsored through the team or debian-mentors.

Once it's clear that you're familiar with Debian development processes
and package maintenance, then we'll happily grant you commit access to
the team repos.

I have read the policy and I agree. My salsa login is dundee.

I would be glad for some tips for first work.

Joining DPT

2021-03-02 Thread Philippe Coval

Dear Python team

I'd like to join the team to work on TUF package:

* Package name: python-tuf
  Upstream Author : tuf developers
* URL : https://github.com/theupdateframework/tuf
* License : Apache-2.0

It has been requested by upstream year ago, but never landed

* https://bugs.debian.org/931178# RFS (2019)
* https://bugs.debian.org/934151# ITP (2019)

So I suggested upstream about cooperative maintenance through DPT,
and was then encouraged to help:

* https://github.com/theupdateframework/tuf/issues/263#issuecomment-781029348

I am motivated to do the initial work
because I know the procedures as one debian maintainers:
* https://qa.debian.org/developer.php?login=r...@users.sf.net

Also as requested I acknowlege team policy:

https://salsa.debian.org/python-team/tools/python-modules/blob/master/policy.rst

I planned to use GBP anyway along salsa, BTW here is my id:

https://salsa.debian.org/rzr

Meanwhile I will update activities regarding this packaging effort
on upstream tracker and crosslink to DBTS.

https://github.com/theupdateframework/tuf/issues/263

If needed feel free to ping me rzr in IRC

Hello Sandro,

I got accesses granted at the individual repository level.
I started working together with Josch in March 2020, back then I had worked on
construct (for which I took over maintenance), pycryptodome, several GUI apps
that we now have in Bullseye alongside their dependencies.

I guess I should have requested this earlier, my bad.

https://salsa.debian.org/python-team/packages/easy-ansi; also
src:python-easy-ansi, the python- prefix is not strictly required --
anyhow, the salsa project name should match what source package name

When we imported packages we set this up. But haven't automated managing
it on all / new packages, yet. (The tools for automation didn't exist at

As I understood it, that's the tagpending webhook, which we have set up
on all our repos, at import time.

You're free to ask for MRs, no team policy on this.

AFAIK, you don't need to add webhooks for that to work, something (I

Speaking of the policy, are there conventions about repository setup,
beyond complying with DEP-14? In particular the CI setup (the usual
pipeline?), whether it's fine to enable branch/tag protection and require
working through MRs, adding webhooks to tag BTS bugs as pending when a fix
is merged, ...

Gentle reminder to provide me access to python-debian on salsa
for new repository creation.

I have currently 3 packages waiting on mentors.d.n to have the
following repositories created to reserve their names before upload:

 * python-absl
 * python-strictyaml
 * python-vttlib

If access cannot be provided on salsa, I will have to create the
Vcs repositories in my own salsa namespace and remove debian-python@
from the maintainers list of these packages. I would like to avoid this
situation.

My login has now be moved to "microjoe", as "-guest" suffix are not
mandatory anymore for non-DD/DM.

Agreed. In my opinion what the policy allows and what is best practise
are two different things.

If you want strong ownership, you can get that already by not having the
package part of the team. To invite people to do so as part of the
Debian policy just makes the policy more complicated (and confusing)
then it needs to be. And creates needless conflicts within our team.

Depending on what you want, You are also free to follow the packaging
guidelines, policies, etc, even if the package isn't formally part of
the team. You could even join this group
https://wiki.debian.org/LowThresholdNmu and allow others to make changes
to your packages without going through the slow NMU process.
