Bug#810947: kwin-x11: iceweasel locks up when multiple windows restored

2016-03-03 Thread Arthur Marsh
Package: kwin-x11
Version: 4:5.5.4-2
Followup-For: Bug #810947

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?

When using Plastik window decoration, kwin_x11 locks up when iceweasel
restores multiple windows (tried 3 times in a row today).

After setting window decoration to org.kde.breeze and restarting the session,
iceweasel restores without any problems with kwin_x11.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
   * What was the outcome of this action?
   * What outcome did you expect instead?

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?

I ran several tests using kernel:

linux-image-4. 4.4.2-3

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

If I attempted to start iceweasel in a KDE Plasma desktop session straight
after a reboot using the Plastik window decoration, kwin_x11 would lock
up when iceweasel opened multiple windows. If I quit iceweasel, logged out
of KDE and logged in again, I could start iceweasel without any kwin_x11
problems.

If I attempted to start iceweasel in a KDE Plasma desktop session straight
after a reboot using the org.kde.breeze window decoration, kwin_x11 kept
running fine.

Just for kicks I've collected all the 'Kernel: ' lines from this bug report:
Kernel: Linux 4.4.0+ (SMP w/4 CPU cores)
Kernel: Linux 4.4.0+ (SMP w/4 CPU cores)

Kernel: Linux 4.5.0-rc5 (SMP w/4 CPU cores)
Kernel: Linux 4.5.0-rc5+ (SMP w/4 CPU cores)

In that list I see only ONE kernel which was released by Debian and that was
4.4.0-rc8-amd64 ... which wasn't even a stable kernel.

Bug#810947: kwin-x11: iceweasel locks up when multiple windows restored

Version: 4:5.5.4-2

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?

The last few times kwin_x11 would lock up on the first time running iceweasel
after upgrades of packages used by KDE, but I could quit iceweasel, log out
of the desktop and log back in and iceweasel would start without problem
(possibly due to caching of data used by iceweasel).

However, since the last lot of updates, I had one time where kwin_x11
segfaulted/restarted and DrKonqi was able to get a usable back-trace:

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=359749

that was with exactly the same kernel, and packages as reported in this
Debian bug report.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or

Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?

I was running ok for a few days up until the libstdc++ upgrade associated with
gcc 5.3.1, then tried upgrading kwin-x11 from experimental.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or

kwin-x11 from experimental runs alright up until about half a minute into
loading iceweasel then locks up, but if I attach gdb to the kwin_x11 process
before starting iceweasel and "continue" it, kwin_x11 runs fine while
iceeweasel runs up multiple windows.

After the latest libc6 update, iceweasel restarted fine, so I checked the
libc6 changelog and it referred to bug #814958

This might be what happened in my case as I have 4 GiB of swap and the
error was that kwin_x11 would lock up at the time that swap started to
be required.

Bug#810947: kwin-x11: iceweasel locks up when multiple windows restored

2016-02-09 Thread Arthur Marsh
Package: kwin-x11
Version: 4:5.4.3-1.1
Followup-For: Bug #810947

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?

With current kernel and libraries, first time to attempt restoring
iceweasel can still lock up when restoring multiple windows, but after doing
a kill -9 on the locked up kwin_x11 process, allowing iceweasel to restore
windows and shutting things down cleanly, logging out and doing an init 1
to even restart dbus, the next login and iceweasel session restore works
without any lock-up.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

I attempted upgrading kwin-x11 to 4:5.5.4-2 but that would lock up right
at the start before attempting to run any programs like iceweasel or konsole.
(See attached back-trace).

   * What was the outcome of this action?

Bug#810947: kwin-x11: iceweasel locks up when multiple windows restored

2016-02-02 Thread Arthur Marsh
Package: kwin-x11
Version: 4:5.4.3-1.1
Followup-For: Bug #810947

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?

The problem still comes and goes semi-randomly when updating various packages.

This time when it locked up I ran gdb on the hung kwin_x11 process and have
attached the log including backtrace.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
   * What was the outcome of this action?
   * What outcome did you expect instead?

   * What led up to the situation?
   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or

After experiences problems as late as yesterday 23 January and applying some
upgrades today, both my usual session and a test account were able to launch
iceweasel with multiple windows (16) being restored without any lock-up of
kwin_x11.

I'll keep checking to see if they problem stays away.

   * What was the outcome of this action?

How about following the same suggestions as I did in
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=805341#30 ?

That fixed the issue the previous time ...

IOW: Decide how you want to use your system and if you like to run unstable,
then get rid of at least the oldstable lines in /etc/apt/sources.list
I wouldn't be surprised if several of your problems are caused by this mess.

And next time when you get an issue, first try to reproduce the problem on
Debian stock kernel instead of your own compiled one before you report it to
the BTS.

2016-01-14 Thread Arthur Marsh
Package: kwin-x11
Version: 4:5.4.3-1.1
Followup-For: Bug #810947

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

I've commented out oldstable from /etc/apt/sources.list, purged most of the
packages now listed as obsolete and re-run things with a stock Debian kernel
and am still seeing the same things ie iceweasel locks up when attempting to
restore several windows when starting from the start menu (and this time it
did the same starting from krunner).

If I kill -9 the kwin_x11 process that is the child of the process with the
command line /usr/bin/kwin_x11 --crashes 1 the iceweasel process continues
and everything loads normally (the /usr/bin/kwin_x11 process continues to
run and I get the tops of windows still showing).

I'll do a check of starting iceweasel from xfce just to make sure that
still works.

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?
   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

I copied my iceweasel profile (~/.mozilla/firefox/profiles.ini and
~/.mozilla/firefox/vl23iilx.default directory tree) to a new account,
and started iceweasel in KDE plasma without issue.

I then went to my original account:

cd
cd .mozilla
ls -al

I moved everything except the empty fonts directory and firefox directory out
the way, then restarted iceweasel under KDE plasma without problems.

I then quit iceweasel, moved the old directories and mozver.dat and
oldpluginreg.dat back and was able to start iceweasel under KDE plasma
without problems.

Even if iceweasel had completely locked up, should it lock up the rest of
the plasma desktop with it?

Arthur.

Bug#810947: kwin-x11: iceweasel locks up when multiple windows restored

2016-01-14 Thread Arthur Marsh
Package: kwin-x11
Version: 4:5.4.3-1.1
Followup-For: Bug #810947

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

In previous situation where I had started iceweasel alright with the original
account and profile, the panel (k start menu, iceweasel icons, clock) had
locked up and become unresponsive.

After logging out and logging back into the KDE plasma session on the
original account and restarting iceweasel, iceweasel locked up as before
and locked up the panel (as had happened with every iceweasel lockup before).

Doing an alt-F1 to get another virtual terminal and doing kill -9 on the
kwin_x11 process allowed iceweasel to continue and the panel became responsive
again.

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?

Please see bug report #806213 - iceweasel would lock up when restoring
multiple windows.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

killing kwin_x11 process after starting plasma desktop, then letting
iceweasel start up fully, then running kwin_x11 after.

   * What was the outcome of this action?
   * What outcome did you expect instead?

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

I found that I could start iceweasel from krunner (alt F2 from plasma
desktop) without issue while kwin-x11 was running.

The problem seems to be a difference between launching iceweasel from
kdeinit5 (plasma start menu) and krunner (alt F2 from plasma desktop).
