follow up on bs/del
I've just tested netscape without the overriding translations and it works fine, with just keycode 22 = BackSpace. However, this is only true if I invoke it from the shell. If it's invoked from fvwm backspace doesn't work, with or without the translations. Here's what I use to call netscape (I don't use the debian package): #!/bin/sh XNLSPATH=/usr/local/netscape112/nls \ XKEYSYMDB=/usr/local/netscape112/XKeysymDB \ /usr/local/netscape112/netscape $* Carlos
Re: Supra 288i Sp Modem
Well, I have a Supra 288i modem although it's not speakerphone. I think the problem with plug and play stuff is that it's kind of undefined until the operating system tells it what irq and port to use. I also have dos and windows (Not Win95) on my system, and I first boot into dos to let the dos device driver that came with the modem to set the port and irq (I used other software that came with it to force it to pick the io port and irq that I wanted it to use), and then once I get a dos prompt, I control-alt-delete and go into linux with lilo, and the modem keeps the values that it's been set with, and works under linux. There may be better support for plug and play stuff for linux out there, but I don't have it if there is. If anybody knows a better way to do this, I'd be most appreciative to know it... module config in 1.1 install
I have recently installed the beta 1.1 release on 2 systems - a generic desktop PC (486DX4/80) and an IBM ThinkPad 360 Laptop. The install is very smooth now. However, I have not been able to configure modules for the kernel. I didn't even notice the module config option when I first installed, and was wondering where it got to. Then I spotted it later, but all of my attempts to install a module fail. There is a series of messages about not being able to find a module when I enter one of the subsections. Selecting a module for installation gives a "uname" error (?), and then indicates failure of the installation. If I try to "insmod" one of the modules, I get a complaint about symbols for kernel 1.3.95 not matching the 1.3.95 kernel. Finally, in order to get the builtin trackpoint device in the Thinkpad to be recognized, do I need to specify one of the busmouse drivers at bootup (I think the msbusmouse)??? TIA, Gary ps - these were "clean" installs. And there is nothing in the installation notes about configuring modules.

problems with nis
I am trying to use the nis package in debian. I have it setup as a master. When I boot up my system I get the following message. YPBINDPROC_DOMAIN: No bound server for domain Chipper Once I have finished the boot if I do a ypcat hosts the sae message appears. If I then start a ppp link the message goes away and everything is fine. This causes a problem with atrun. If I dont start ppp and leave my system on for a few hours I start getting the following mail once every minute to root. My question is why will nis not work unless I start ppp. Any help would be appreciated cause I have looked everywhere. TIA Dale Miller

Checking if the network is up
Luis Francisco Gonzalez: > Is there any way of checking whether the network is responding so > that I only run popclient when it is? That usually depends on what exactly you mean by "the network". If you're using diald or some such, take a look at the result of `route`. If the network is always "logically up" on your machine, but frequently not "physically up" you'll need to probe for a response from some remote system. Take a look at the man page for ping and read about the -c and -n options. You'll need to run grep on the result because the presence or absence of a remote host won't affect ping's return code. -- Raul

scsi on the 1.1 boot disk
I was curious as to why the new 1.1 boot disk kernels don't seem to have the scsi drivers compliled in? I've down loaded the latest disks and tried to boot up a couple of machines, one with the NCR 53c810 and the other with an Adaptect 2940 scsi controller, neither kernel pick up the scsi disks. Shouldn't the initial boot kernels have as many drivers as possible turned on?? Do I have to pass boot parms or make custom bootdisks in 1.1? Thanks. -- Mike Chovan CSGnet Sacramento, Calif.

Re: 1.1 X setup default: bs/del don't work with motif apps.
It's interesting that people are having problems now with Motif apps, because suddenly, my problems with Motif apps have been magically solved. That is, the backspace key now works correctly for both Motif and non-Motif apps. Previously, if I wanted the backspace key to work correctly with Motif apps, I would have to map it to backspace (where the default was mapped to delete). But, if I did this, then it would not work correctly with non-Motif apps because they generally want the delete key instead of backspace. There was usually a fix for each of these non-Motif apps but *each* app had to be fixed individually which was a pain. So, I just left the backspace key mapped to delete and used ^H when using Motif apps. Thanks to whoever fixed this. Please don't change it back to the way it was. So, if people are having trouble now, and they've previously mapped backspace to backspace (^H) for Motif apps, try changing the mapping back to delete and see if this solves the problem. cfengine-1.2.26-2.deb bad /etc/cfengine.conf
The default /etc/cfengine.conf does not work out of the box because the actionsequence is empty (parse error line 23). Also, wouldn't it be nice to have the postinst script get the timezone from the installed system? YA.

What you care about is LC_CTYPE (character set), not LANG (language), methinks. Anyhow... I've compiled my own fr_CA locale file. If you're interested just e-mail me and I'll send you a copy. After that doing "setenv LC_CTYPE fr_CA" will make nvi happy... assuming it calls setlocale() somewhere. (I did a small test similar to yours and it worked iff I did a call to setlocale().) I'll probably do a set of Debian packages for locale support at some point in the future... After I've done all the other stuff I have to do. Christian
Bug in date (1.1)
I can't find the name of the package maintainer, so here's the problem: when the timezone is incorrectly set (the default in my 1.1 brand new installation), saying % date +%Z does something bad: instead of returning an empty timezone (as if I say "date '+%H %Z'" which works perfectly), the disk starts spinning and date does not return until it is killed. Checking if the network is up
Hi, I am trying to write a script to use popclient to download the mail from the office's server. This will run on a portable. I want the script to check whether the network is up before attempting to retrieve any mail, as I am likely to use the notebook in other places and won't be hooked to the network. The question is: Is there any way of checking whether the network is responding so that I only run popclient when it is? Thanks. Luis.

The linux console is set up to produce a delete when backspace is hit. XFree emulates this. Typical behavior is both bs and del producing a del. Here is the xmodmap sequence to set both, though the second shouldn't be necessary. xmodmap -e << END ! Fixes backspace keycode 22 = BackSpace ! Re: How to remove a user?
Andreas Wehler > A> After searching a while for a program or script to completely > A> remove a user I didn't found something and did it per hand. Is > A> this neccessary? Thanks. Removing a user is something that should be done with thought. In some circumstances (user never existed), it's just a matter of removing the user's home directory and the entries in /etc/passwd and /etc/group. Other times (when the user really exists) it may be more appropriate to change the user's shell to /bin/false (or something hand crafted along the lines of /usr/local/bin/why-your-account-is-turned-off-user) for a period of time before removing stuff. Also, if the user really existed, there may be files outside the home directory that also need to be dealt with (e.g. /var/spool/mail/user, or /home/friend/shared/foo). What "dealt with" means depends on the situation... -- Raul

The fact that nvi (does not) displays diacritic characters has nothing to do with the fonts, just to what isprint() returns. I had it work under Linux using a Slackware 3.0 distribution. Doing a little test: #include #include #include main() { int c; setlocale(LC_ALL, ""); while ((c = getchar()) != EOF) { if (c == '\n') continue; printf("0x%02d: %d\n", c, isprint(c)); } } typing diacritic characters tells they are not printable with LANG set to ISO-8859-1 :-( Is it a bug in the libc5 used with 1.1?
