dpkg freezes system
Dear Debian Users, I've recently installed debian linux on my portable and have run into a problem with dpkg. First, some background. I don't have access to an up and running linux machine, except for one with minimal disk space. I used that to make floppies for a base installation. Then I put my zip drive on a mac with an ethernet card and ftp-ed the most of the debian installation from my our mirror (most means Packages.gz and the directories admin, base, comm, devel, doc, editors, mail, math, misc, net, news, shells, sound, tex, text, and x11) I ftp-ed these to a dos formatted zip disks. Next, I reformatted my hard drive with three partitions: one for linux, one for linux swap and one a 200 Mb dos partition. Then, I booted DOS from a floppy that included drivers for my adaptec pcmcia scsi card, and I copied everything from the zip disks to the dos partition on the hard drive. After that, I rebooted with the linux boot floppy and went through the installation procedure. Up to this point all was great. I had a working base installation and I could boot linux from my hard drive. When running dselect, all seemed to be ok, but I couldn't seem to install anything, even when dselect told me it had installed things. So, I looked at the debian .deb files on the msdos partition. Because they were copied from a mac to a dos formatted disk, they all had names like `!acct_62.-0d'. To simplify dealing with them from bash, I wrote a script that removed the `!' from the filenames. Still, dselect didn't seem to be able to find them, so I started using dpkg by itself. This worked great, until I started trying to install xlib and emacs. Now dselect tells me that they are both half installed and need to be reconfigured. When I run dpkg to reinstall them, dpkg freezes my machine. Any ideas? Regards, Mike

PS2 PROBLEM SOLVED -- sort of
Many thanks to Susan, Digge, Adrenolin, JinHo, and others who responded to my call for help in getting my mouse set up. I think that I have solved my problem with using my PS2 mouse with X. My solution is to not use a PS2 mouse. Use a serial mouse instead. My theory is that the base system for Debian 1.1 does not support PS2 mice for certain non-standard but common hardware configurations. I believe that the root of the problem is somewhere in the land of /dev/. This is certianly speculation on my part, but I do have some evidence to back it up. I will submit a bug report through normal channels and put the details there. Mike

IP aliasing question
I have a single machine on the net (zachs.place.org) with ip aliases to make it also be (eth0:0) juggling.place.org and (eth0:1) www.worldwind.com. Which all works fine. Except... that anywhere I telnet to from that machine sees me as coming from www.worldwind.com instead of from zachs.place.org. Which screws up ip-based filters, and etc. So does anyone know how/why this happens? IMHO, telnets should appear to come from the 'primary' (non-aliased) IP, not from one of the aliases. ideas? --Zachary

smail upgrade from old Slackware - Debian?
I'm finally upgrading a 2-years-ancient Linux system, running an old Slackware 1.2 (or so) distribution. Back then Slackware's default mail agent was smail; since then they've switched to sendmail. Slackware 3 was pre-installed on the new machine I bought, so I thought I'd try using it as the base system and selectively restoring my old setup as needed. I had problems compiling the latest smail from source, and the current Slackware smail binaries aren't configured to look for the same things as the old ones did. After a few hours of tinkering I had outgoing mail working but not incoming. I'm wondering if it wouldn't just be easier, since I'm in for a reinstall anyway, to junk Slackware and try building on a new Debian system. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has taken a similar leap from an old Slackware setup, especially re: the smail configuration. -- David Sewell * [EMAIL PROTECTED] | Night-walkers, wizards, Dep't of Geosciences, University of Arizona | bacchanals, revellers, http://packrat.aml.arizona.edu/~dsew/ | sharers in the mysteries. | --Heraclitus

tar gives segmentation fault !!
hi folks, Just after having installed Debian 1.1.3 from buzz-fixed/1996_07_14 I was using tar to copy debian packages on the disk, more precisely: tar -xvMf /dev/fd0 (they are multi-volume files). Doing this I get segmentation fault. I've tried with different volume sets (I've done one for each section, base, admin, devel etc) and I get inconsistent results. Some stops at the very first disk and some after that. Moreover dropping the -M or -v or both option (that of course results in a incomplete backup) works for the volume sets that stops at the first disk. Anyboby experiencing the same? Any idea. On the other hand, you could copy the relevant directories off of the CD and put them into the path structure that this version of dselect wants to find them. what exactly IS that path structure that dselect expects? I would like to know the answer to this for two different scenarios: 1) Long (i.e. original) filenames on a Linux-native (ext2fs) file system; 2) Short (msdos) filenames on an msdos partition. If I installed a new vmlinuz without rerunning lilo. Good Luck, Nathan

More adaptec 2842 problems
Now I have found bootdisk (.../buzz-updates/disks-i386/special- kernels/boot/boot1440_2.0.5-1.bin) from wich I can boot. That's good, but now new problems has raised. After ``booting/rooting'' I tried to install the basedisks. While doing that the installation process sometimes stops telling that one of the basedisks (it's random witch one) is bad, but they are not, they are new and I have checked them with more disk utilities. Mustly I can read all the disks correctly, but when time comes to extracting the files new problems shows up. Each time when extracting the files each time I most likely get a new error. Typical I get a message somthing like: general protection : CPU : 0 EIP : 0010:[00118be4] EFLAGS : 00010206 . . . several register, stack, ... dumps . . . Segmentation fault One time I was actually lucky installing the basesystem. But (again) then a new problem showed up. I copied some *.gz files to my computer and then tried gzip's integrity test (on the file ) gzip -tv filename.gz (file on the computer) and sometimes I am told that the same file is OK and sometimes not (more or less random). But what is much worse is that I often get one of the ``Ooops'' and dumps like a I have just mentioned. What I am telling is that something acts unstable and that's what I would like to ask some of the experts out there about. Is it - Because of some bugs in the rather new kernel version or some of the modules (aic7xxx or some other), or is it - Because of my hardware (jumper settings, BIOS settings, etc) or whatever one can imagine. Is there som thing special one should be aware of installing on a PC machine with an adaptec 2842 host adapter. I am ready to give more details about my everything. I can tell that DOS (5.0 or 6.2) is running fine on my machine, but on the other side a real mode system as DOS does not require much of the host adapter. Niels Bo Johansen

So I've tried to isolate the necessary changes to pppd/lcp.c and put them into the ppp-2.2.0f source. I've included the patch below. Let me know if it works. trouble with perl ... continued
I took the advice of a couple of individuals: (1) installed wg15_locale_1-1 (2) already had perl_5.003-2 installed This did not fix the problem below. I have verified that the /usr/share/locale and /usr/share/nls directories are present. I think there may be something missing in the configuration of either perl or wg15_locale. Just say the word, and I'd be glad to issue a new bug report... I get the following error messages every time perl starts up on my debian-linux machines (perl and return with do it!) This is the current perl-5.003 release. Any idea how I can rid my system of this problem? Problems with install from PHT CDROM
I borrowed a friends monthly Pacifix Hitech CDROM to install Debian. I created all the disks and started the install. I had to redo each of the base disks at least once because of errors. Then when installing the kernel it gives me a crc error with gzip. The system will boot from the custom boot disk but I can't mount the CD to continue installation, because it says the kernel does not support iso9660 which I thought was rather strange. Any ideas? Thanks. Tim Gray
Re: a memory + SCSI error??
Sounds to me like you might have unseated one of the cards, most likely SCSI, or loosened a SCSI cable. You might want to check that. Also make sure all your termination switches (if any) are right. -- Rob

I'm going to call and tell them if I don't receive it this week I'm canceling my order. I'm sorry to but in here, but I feel I must comment. If you are impatient after only waiting a week (or three in the case of the Israel order) you need to kick back and chill out a bit. Joshua in particular needs to get a grip. I ship CDs both inside and outside the US and have often had shippments take more than a week inside the US. Outside the US, an AirMail posting from New Zealand took almost 4 weeks to get here, and my AirMail deliverys to Europe take a good solid 3 weeks. So, be patient and don't lay all the blame on Simon. Technically, I am in competition with I-connect (and the rest of the world) for CD sales, but (as far as I know) Simon and I are friends and associates, and I must say that I know Simon to be honest and trustworthy, and as dedicated a person as I have know in this group. Those who have complained about the poor service, will, I hope, spread the responsibility for the delays more evenly on the rest of the people that are in your critical path and not heap it all on one person, who is doing his best to provide service. Re: unreliable service of I-Connect
Joshua, I too had a similar problem. My order from i-Connect was three weeks late, but I called Simon and he explained the problems he had and apologized. He also gave me a new ship date another week later, which was acceptable. I would have liked to have gotten my CD on time too, but sometimes these things happen. I know from dealing with Sun Microsystems that these things happen to everyone and not just i-Connect. I think that as long as Simon is keeping his customers properly informed, and not BS'ing us, we should have a little patience in understanding his situation. I've been waiting for Sparc Ultra 2's from Sun for two months, but instead of getting upset, I simply need to be informed of the current ship status. Simon has been honest and up front with me, so I have nothing bad to say. If i-Connect can't meet your needs though, perhaps you should look at other options. I simply don't think bashing Simon here is going to help matters. JMHO. :-) I believe Dale and Bruce are also selling CD's, no? Maybe you should see what their lead times are and see if they can meet your needs. I can tell you that after finally getting my Debian CD, it was well worth the wait. RE: Two Questions
1. How do I set up a boot so I can boot Debian or Win95? Now I have to use a boot disk to get debian to boot... I believe there's a command line linux loader you can use to boot linux. I suppose the easiest thing to do would be set a batch file to present you a menu and allow a selection of either 95 or linux. I can't remember the name of the command line loader though, I use LILO on a machine that runs just Linux. 2. How do I change the diplay mode in XF86 from 8bit to 16bit color? I have a Diamond Stealth 64 Video VRAM w/ 2MB and use 16bit color in win95 so there shouldn't be any probs to get it in X too.. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think there is a problem with the Diamond card. If memory serves me well, Diamond does not publicize code to drive their cards without signing a non-disclosure agreement. Since Linux includes all source code under GNU, this would break the NDA and cause all sortsa trouble. Good luck with it, and like I mentioned, I think what I just said is accurate, but check me on this one, I may be thinking about a different video card. Tim --- I am Pentium of Borg. what files does dselect/dpkg use to discern choices?
Now, to explain the question, since I can't understand the Subject: line and I wrote it myself... I've got approximately 50 machines I need to build. My best option for the initial system build, unless I've missed something, would be to run deselect on one machine, then take a deselect-generated file containing my selections and exporting that file to all the other machines, so I can just start up dselect and choose Install without having to go through Select on each. How can I accomplish this? Which file(s) do I need to export in order to make this happen? And, is there a better way to achieve the same results? Now, a meta-issue. I've been extremely pleased with the Debian distribution, as well as the support I've received from this list. Thanks, all! David [EMAIL PROTECTED] aka [EMAIL PROTECTED] Office: 3503 WeH, x86720

Re: unreliable service of I-Connect
I am to in this situation: waiting for the CD for 4 weeks. I can't have any response from Simon Shapiro (I-Connect) on my order since 2 weeks so I am considering to ftp the files and master a CD for my use. For what it's worth, I'm in Canada and it took about 2 weeks to receive my CD from Simon. Europe, three weeks. Still waiting for a bill though (don't know if the credit card has been credited yet). Never got a receipt of order confirmation of any kind... (the CD is fine though :) Niels
