Re: Reading news with Emacs

1996-10-14 Thread Rob Browning

Here's an example of part of my setup. Yours should be similar:

(setq gnus-select-method '(nntp "newshost.cc.utexas.edu"))
(setq gnus-asynchronous t)
(setq gnus-subscribe-newsgroup-method 'gnus-subscribe-zombies)
(setq gnus-check-new-newsgroups 'ask-server)
(setq gnus-save-newsrc-file nil)

;; So the server will accept me
(setq gnus-local-domain "cs.utexas.edu")

;; So the from field will be reasonable.
(setq gnus-user-from-line "Rob Browning <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>")
(setq user-mail-address "[EMAIL PROTECTED]")
(setq gnus-local-organization "The University of Texas at Austin")

You might have to delete your existing ~/.newsrc.eld file if things
still don't work. Sometime in the past I had Gnus get confused when
it had saved bad info to the file as a result of a misconfiguration on
my part.

Hope this helps. I have long mini-HOWTO about using Gnus, in all it's
glory, for mail and news. I'm going to try to set up a web page soon,
and put the file there.

Reading news with Emacs

1996-10-14 Thread Johann Spies
Hi,

After a few weeks trying out Linux I decided to downloaded Emacs and sofar I am
impressed with Emacs.

I have not succeeded in getting Emacs Gnus to read news, however. I did put
export NNTPSERVER=news.ilink.nis.za in my .bashrc file but it did not have any
effect on gnus' behavior

I get the following error message:
Johann (My computer name) open error:''. Continue?

If I answer yes then the following message appear:
Auto-save file exists. Read it?

After that "no news is horrible news" in the minibuffer and on the status bar
"Gnus: *Group* {nntp:Johann}

I do not understand the documentation in this regard. It talks about a
DOMAINNAME - variable but I do not read where I can find or change this
variable.

Can somebody help, please?

Thank you to everyone who patiently answered my questions on LaTeX and smail.

LaTeX problem

1996-10-14 Thread James W. Lynch

As some of you might remember I asked if there were any LaTeX problems
a week or so ago and received a few responses that indicated that
it was working for them. So I discarded my old reliable 1.2.13
system and installed 2.0.6 with all of the new elf software and
mostly all is well, except LaTeX is giving me a litle problem.

The following sample input and resulting output demonstrates my
concern. The line in the output that reads "JL" should be my name
and the next line ("O") should be the date. Even if I stick a /date
line in the input, I get the "O".

Would someone kindly run this through LaTeX and see what you get?

I used dvi2tty to generate the output, but since the PostScript
output looks the same, dvi2tty isn't generating the
errors.

Re: Boot disk SCSI kernel panic

1996-10-14 Thread David_Oswald

Hello ...

I have the same identical problem as you. And unfortunately I have not
figured out a cure either. I had to resort back to using an older AHA 1542c
controller.(which gives me no problems).

I also have experimented with the slakware distribution and found that
the darn thing worked nicely. (but that was several moons ago and I'm just not
sure If I tried that experiment on my current hardware ... I say nicely, but I
should say that it was actually impressive. At the time I had mount a 10mb/sec.
drive and I liked the way this machine performed.

Good luck ...

Subject: Boot disk SCSI kernel panic
Author:  Lindsay Haisley <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> at INTERNET-PUB
Date:10/13/96 2:06 AM

Package: boot1440.bin / aic7xxx
Version: Debian 1.1

I get a kernel panic on SCSI probing on attempting to boot from the standard
Debian boot disk and can go no further. My system is a 486 DX2/80 with an
Adaptec AHA2842 VL Bus SCSI card. boot1440.bin was obtained from
\buzz\disks-i3\current on the 3 Oct 96 Debian CD from iConnect.

On looking up the SCSI driver in the F4 help, I see that aic7xxx may receive
the options "extended,noreset". On checking the README for the driver on
another Linux system, I see no reference to "extended", and the correct
syntax for "noreset" is "no_reset".

The latter portion of the boot sequence output is as follows (close, I hope,
since I copied it by hand):

aic7xxx: (aic7xxx_isr) Encountered Spurious Interrupt
qlogicisp : PCI bios not present
PPA: unable to initialize controller at 0x378, error 2
scsi0: Adaptec AHA274x/284x/294x (EISA/VLB/PCI-Fast SCSI) 3.2/3.1/3.0
scsi : 1 host
aic7xxx: Scanning channel A for devices
aix7xxx: (aic7xxx_isr) BRKADRINT error(0x1):
  Illegal Host Access
Kernel panic: aic7xxx (aic7xxx_isr) BRKADRINT, error(0x1) seqaddr(0x0)

I had exactly the same difficulty with the Slackware 96 boot disk, write
Patrick Volkering and Walnut Creek about it and never heard a word from them.

It is worth noting that this same system is successfully running Slackware
Linux, manually upgraded from kernel 1.2.18 which boots from a zImage
bootdisk (kernel 2.0.12, or some such) made with "make zdisk" and the SCSI
boot operation is executed with no problem.

I don't know if this is a bug, a configuration problem, or a startup
parameters problem, but I assume the former since I can find no
documentation which might direct me to appropriate config or startup param
solutions.

Has anyone any knowledge of this problem and if it can be solved at my end?
I'll be happy to supply additional information if necessary.

Carl Streeter was the previous maintainer and added the pgp patches. Here

Use 'g++' instead of 'gcc' when compiling C++ code; it'll tell the
linker to link with the correct libraries for C++ code
('iostream' or 'stdc++', I believe).

Now for the next error you'll probably experience.

"test doesn't produce any output".

That's right... if you call it with simply "test", you'll start
"/bin/test" instead of "./test".

Hope this helps,

Those packages are experimental versions, and have at least
one problem: they don't provide the package "pgp". They're
better than nothing, of course.

gcc linker-error's

1996-10-14 Thread Niels Bo Johansen
I have tried to compile the most simple C++ program whith the gcc
compiler (2.7.2). I do not have the exact source code, but it's
something like:

#include

void main() {
  int i = 9;

  cout << " write a some text.\n";

}

saved in a file called test.cc.
Trying the following:

   gcc -c test.cc (works fine indicating the the compiler accepts
   the input)
   gcc -L test test.o (assuming test.o made as above)

or simply

   gcc -o test test.cc

both give the following (linker) errors:

/tmp/cca001121.o: In function `main':
/tmp/cca001121.o(.text+0x13): undefined reference to `cout'
/tmp/cca001121.o(.text+0x13): undefined reference to
`ostream:operator<<(char const *)'

does anyone have a solution to this problem. Besides gcc and binutils
I have installed: libc5-dev-5.2.18-9.deb, libg++27-2.7.1-2.deb. Also I
have tried with: libobjects-0.1.19-1.deb but it didn't help.

thanks in advance, Niels Bo Johansen

Where is pgp?

1996-10-14 Thread Volker Ossenkopf
In an old package list, I have copied in August, the debian
pgp packages (US and international) were in non-free.

Nowadays, there does not seem to be any pgp package available.
I have scanned the ls-lRs at Debian and some mirrors, but
NO pgp.

I desperately need pgp since I have created some new
debian packages (xvmount and xcolorsel) but I cannot
submit them without pgping them (until now I never saw
a real reason for pgp signing or encrypting anything.).

Where can I find the debian pgp packages now?

Hoping for help -- Volker

It should by now be common knowledge that no CGI script whatsoever
is working on www.debian.org.

Explanation: www.debian.org has moved to another machine. In order to
make mirroring it easier, it has been decided to implement a "cgi.debian.org"
to execute CGI scripts. The HTTPD on cgi.debian.org has not been set up
yet.

I've updated the root document to include a link to Brian C. White's "InSite"
search system. www.debian.org has not mirrored this yet.

Try http://insite.verisim.com/search/debian/simple

Dominik,

Sorry to bother you about this, but I haven't had too much
luck at Kingston. I have a kingston KNE-PCM/M PC Card
ethernet card I'd like to use with Debian. The pcmcia-ps
package seems to support it and recognize it, but I'm unable
to get the card to work. I was using a Xircom, but that's
not supported under Linux. I'd like to switch, but can't
get the Kingston to transmit. I have Win95 (unfortunately)
instaled on the first partition, and the kingston doesn't
work there either, although Device Manager reports all is
well. Do you have any experience with these cards? Do you
have any idea what may be wrong? The Xircom card works in
the same slot, with the samce network cabling.

Thanks in advance
