basic install problems
I installed Linux 1.3.1 thru floppies, but run into rough water. I have a plain 486 DX2 66 Mhz, with 16 MB, 2.1 Gb IDE HDD and a Creative CDrom (Matsushita - CR 581-M) on a Soundblaster 16 card. 1. During the installation Linux asks for the device drivers to be installed: - Block device drivers: cannot figure out what to install? - CDROM drive: sbpcd is offered, but Linux cannot find any on my system. Thus I installed plain cdrom. - Further I installed the serial and parallel port device drivers, plus a NE 2000 driver, though the card is not yet connected to a net work. Other intall sequence went alright. Then I made a boot-floppy and installed LILO as I was adviced. Only Lilo does not give a boot prompt when pressing Shift on booting only something like A2E. But no choice available, neither thru Tab not ? and Linux starts. Then I appended to lilo.conf: other=/dev/hda1 table=/dev/hda label=win95 But to no avail. Then I tried to use dselect to install the packages but my cdrom is not being recognized. Dselect asks for the Block Device name; I cannot find any references to that. So I abandoned that part of the install. I figured out how to get to the LILO docs and de-installed LILO in order to get the old boot records in place but now nothing is booting anymore: no Linux, no Win95; W95 start-up disk searches the floppy-drive for system, not the HDD. Questions: - How to get LILO boot both linux and Win95 (again)? - How to get Linux recognize the Creative CDROM? - How to get Linux recognize the SB 16? - Suppose I do a new install, what drivers are necessary to install during the installation process? Re: Just starting - looking for references
Thanks all for the tips. I couldn't wait for my distribution to arrive so I've borrowed a copy of Debian ver 1.3 It is a slightly limited copy from a trilinux CD with all 3 major disributions on 1 disk but should keep me happy untill my ver 1.3.1 arrives. I believe that the difference from ver 1.3 to 1.3.1 is basically the inclusion of Xfree86 3.3 The install went smoothly and I only had to bite my lip a few times when I got to the dselect part of the install, but the great thing is, I can run it many times and I dont' have to be in X to browse my available packages. Not sure how I should have gone about setting up LILO because the install process wouldn't let me put lilo on the MBR of my first IDE. (I installed debian on /dev/hdb2 and /dev/hdb3) I modified a lilo.conf that I had saved on a DOS partition and it worked out OK What I did like is the /etc/X11/window-managers file which rather easily lets me specify the default window manager. So, which of the versions of Unix comes closest to resembling Linux from Debian? I've been using Redhat for a while but I expect the layout of files will be different. -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Re: basic install problems
Dirk, A few questions: 1. After you modified your lilo.conf, did you re-run /sbin/lilo? 2. How is your drive partitioned? 3. What drive letter is your CD-ROM under Windows 95? Under the Debian install, the ATAPI/IDE CD-ROM drivers are installed by default (at least on my disk from Linux System Labs). My concern is that your drive is hooked up to your SB 16 card. I do not know what kind of interface is used for this card (ATAPI/IDE) or proprietary SB, but even if it is ATAPI/IDE, the interface is probably not recognized out of the box by GNU/Linux. I would suggest printing a system summary from Windows 95 (right-click on My Computer, select Properites, then something about devices.) It will show you a graphical list of devices in your computer. There will be a Print button. Press it and select summary. This will at least tell you how things are configured under Windows 95, which will then give you a hint on how to get them working under GNU/Linux. I have had *no* problems making GNU/Linux and Windows 95 co-exist on my machine, however, I realize I am very lucky: Many people have terrible times getting this to work. Let me know what you find out, and I will make any suggestions I can. LGW4 Dirk Kievith wrote: I installed Linux 1.3.1 thru floppies, but run into rough water. Trouble with resc1440.bin on new Ultra DMA IDE motherboard
Hello, I've been using debian for about two years now, for work and home, and this is my first post ever... A friend of mine enrolled in some programming classes and just bought himself a new computer. We were putting the system together last night and I ran into a serious problem while trying to install linux. The debian boot disk (resc1440.bin from 1997-10-13 and 1997-08-01) died just after the kernel was loaded and booting, after about 10 kernel boot messages the system rebooted itself (too quick to read just what the last messages were, maybe PCI stuff). The system is an AMD K6 200Mhz, Iwill P55XB2 motherboard, 64Mb, 4.3Gb IBM Ultra DMA IDE drive. I thought that the new IDE might have trouble with linux while we were buying the hardware, but I never would have guessed that linux would blow up like that. Has anybody seen this behavior with the debian disks, or linux before? Has anyone tried the new Ultra DMA with linux? Also the BIOS PCI device listing has something called Serial Bus Controller, I have never seen this before, strangly it shares the same interupt with the video card (Matrox Millenium II), I assume this is part of the Intel 430TX chipset, but have used the TX before, any idea? Linux as a Firewall
Wow!!! I'm on the firewall mailing list (http://www.greatcircle.com) where they've been having a bit of a discussion about the pros/cons of using Linux as a firewall. If you're interested, read on (I think Debian developers will get a bit of a kick regarding what is said about Slackware/RedHat/Debian developers in general - or, at least, what is implied) Anyone here care to comment? Also, I'm not just posting this to start some type of flame war, etc. I've been considering building a commercial product based on Debian Linux - it's features to include basic firewalling capabilities. So, I'd like to begin some discussion in this list on the merits of using Debian as a firewall - something beyond just IP Masquerading, etc. Later, Kevin Traas -Original Message- From: john [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Greg Whalin [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: Firewall list firewalls@GreatCircle.COM Date: Friday, October 31, 1997 10:08 AM Subject: Re: Linux et al PFs I've been hit by about everything, from one time to another. Be it simple buffer overflows - SYN or Smurf attacks. And i've seen linux puke under conditions that BSD sailed right through. I think that speaks for itself. Linux isn't anything new to me. Aside from the old SysV/Xenix machines I used, it was my first personal unix. I have had alot of experience with it in both firewalled and non-firewalled enviroments. It's a great personal work enviroment. It can't take high stress. I dare you to take a Linux 2.X kernel machine- and hit it hard, with a syn attack. It will puke, unless you have some serious CPU/Memory. I've seen attacks hit a FreeBSD 2.2.X machine running on a *486/33* that were correctly filtered and everything went on like normal. Similar attacks on a Pentium 133 we were useing for testing (which now serves as a quake server) made it Kernel Panic - AHHHEEE in a matter of about 10 minutes. Again, i'm only pointing out, it is just not a very suitable OS for large networks, or anything where you're really worried about security. I could name off about 10 different bugs - external, and internal, that is default with most Slackware/Redhat/Debian installations. The fact is: Linux is not designed by a group of people intent on makeing a secure OS. It's hacked together, and there is always some new problem with it. Be that security holes, kernel bugs, etc. I'd rather place my bets with something time-tested, and worked on by a set group of experienced individuals. As I have stated, I use several linux servers running on (actual) well configured platforms as corporate firewall systems with heavy network bandwidth demand. They perform brilliantly every time. I have zero OS related crashes in over two years of uptime. In fact, the only crashes I have handled are hardware related. I would venture a guess as to say that your statements are biased, or uninformed, or quite simply that you are not setting these systems up correctly. I am not here to say that linux is better than any BSD variant. In fact, I am not even discussing any BSD OS. I've been running FreeBSD for all of my commercial applications, be they serveing webpages, or firewalling, and i've been much more impressed with it's stability, sense of security, and in some respects, it's preformance. can't get remote xdm login screen...help!
Hi, After getting my Linux pc on the network here at work using DHCP (thanks for the help), I've tried getting in via xdm using xwin32, but without success. Here's the score - if I use xwin32 and try to query the linux machine directly, after a very long pause (say a minute?) I get a message saying something along the lines of 'Display some obscure network name which isn't the network name of the linux machine could not be opened'. If i bring up a choser using the 'broadcast' option, I get our SG machines on the list with 'willing to manage'. Selecting one of those brings up the xdm login screen. Fine. But my linux machine, although on the list, has the message 'available' (not 'willing to manage' as with the SG machines). Selecting it just gives the same problem as mentioned above. I don't know the difference between 'willing to manage' and 'available' but guess that if i could get my linux machine on the list as 'willing to manage', then i could login via xdm. Can anybody help me? This is Linux advocacy stuff... Martin -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Trouble? e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] .

The IRQ summary shows standard config of the system: SB16 at 05, IDE controller at 10 (must be CDROM), IDE at 14. At IRQ 09 is a CDROM controller, but it is disabled by the system. Main problem remains how to get Linux recognize or configure it to these settings. I have had *no* problems making GNU/Linux and Windows 95 co-exist on my machine, however, I realize I am very lucky: Many people have terrible times getting this to work. Let me know what you find out, and I will make any suggestions I can. You are indeed lucky. Moreover I need my system for my general and other work and had hoped Linux would enhance and improve the performance of my machine. Now I get kind of stuck up and may have to stick to Win co. :-( Now during installation, is it necessary to specifically install the 'Block' and other devices, like serial and parallel ports, or does the system recognize these standard devices by itself?? Re: Linux, FAT32 and a mighty odd MBR.

Hello. I had a weird problem last night, installing Debian 1.3* on a friends PC. For what it's worth, it's a PentiumII/266, some hideous amount of memory, some hideous amount of HD space. Aside from the SuperMicro motherboard bug [Which has been reported, I'm fairly sure..], you know, the one where the bootable cd sits there at the LDLINUX.SYS line.., everything went fairly smoothly. Until it came to LILO. Installed LILO, booted Linux fine. Added the lines to boot Win95, it took 2 goes for it to install the new record [it never complained the first time about failing]. Problem is, it simply doesn't boot Win95. It says booting Win95, then returns to the LILO prompt. Ok, a bit of a hassle. He needs his Win95 stuff more than Linux, so I'll just remove LILO and figure out something else later. lilo -u, lilo -U both complain that theres no LILO boot signature on /dev/hda. Hence nothing is removed. Hmmm. Boot via Win95 rescue disk and fdisk /mbr. Reboot and LILO's STILL there. Tried this more times than I can recall.. LILO won't die. System Commander reported some wacky things about the MBR, saying things were pretty well screwed with it. The problem remains, I can't seem to overwrite the MBR, not with LILO, not with fdisk. I found out that the Windows partition was FAT32, but surely LILO can handle this? [does it make much of a difference with the MBR?] So, I guess I'm throwing this out to you guys, is this a Windows problem? A Debian problem? A LILO problem? A FAT32 problem? Any suggestions for fixing? Thanks, D. Using this setup /dev/hda1 Win95 /dev/hda2 Linux /dev/hda3 Linux Swap /dev/hda Generic MBR, not Lilo /dev/hda1 Win95 Boot sector /dev/hda2 LILO /dev/hda2 is set as active with FDISK. Bios reads generic MBR off of /dev/hda. MBR reads the first sector off the active partition, ie /dev/hda2. LILO is now active. From here, it either reads the linux kernel, or some other, ie chained, partition. Solution: Use FDISK to change active flag. I don't know why you can't boot win95 from lilo's prompt. Could we see your /etc/lilo.conf file? And a copy of fdisk's output? Intranet Web Site
This is a little off-topic;however I've just been tasked with setting up an Intranet Web Server for our company and I need some help with sizing - I haven't been able to find any info on this posted on the web anywhere. Anyway, I want leverage my existing experience with Apache and Debian Linux, so I'm thinking of putting the two together and coming up with a solution that will cover what we need. I need to setup a server that will handle approximately 100-200 concurrent users accessing fairly typical web site information (mix of text and graphics). Any ideas on what I can expect for typical data throughput per user? 100KB per minute? If so, then I need a system that will support 200 x 100KB == 20,000KB/minute == ~350KB/s throughput. With these numbers, I don't see network capacity as being a problem. However, I have no idea what type of hardware I'm going to need to support this. i.e. what might I require in the way of CPU, RAM, and Disk I/O? I assume order of importance will be RAM, CPU, and finally Disk I/O, but what quantity/quality of each will I require? One other thing. I'm probably going to need Apache-SSL Any help you can provide would be much appreciated. So, you either have to have ALL variables the locale, or ALL to the C style. But, by undefining the LC_ALL variable and using the LANG variable instead. You can then select which category is what. You can thus set your LANG to... LANG = is_IS LC_TIME = C And then the fields LC_NUMERIC, LC_MESSAGES, LC_COLLATE, LC_CTYPE and LC_MONETARY will function as the locale specifies. But the result of the 'date' command... Sat Nov 1 1997. 17:24:00 GMT ...the C locale as specified by the LC_TIME variable. Thus, you have a better control over you locale's settings. Re: On entering a secure directory, would like warning.
Jameson Burt [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: I have been told to display a warning message whenever a person enters a particular, secure, directory. Of course, on first thought this is a lame idea since people can access a directory without using cd. A fairly clean solution that might do what you want is to restrict access to the directory to a particular group. Then, force people to run a simple setgid program that prints the warning message on stderr and starts a shell (or, perhaps, a program specified on the command line). Having the shell prompt change to reflect the secure status might be a nice touch here. This has the advantages that (1) no one can access the directory without seeing the message; and (2) you can log accesses to the directory, if desired. An obvious disadvantage is that it complicates casual access to the directory; for example, if I'm running an editor and want to get a file from the secure directory, it could be pretty awkward. Re: [OFF-TOPIC] C++ template question
For template classes, the class has to be in the header file only, it can't have separate files for header and class file. When you want to use the template class, only include the header file, and compile only the test file, not the template class file. Ex. template class file : bar.h test file: foo.c #include bar.h void main(void) { ... } and compile using g++ -o foo foo.c Qiang -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . RE: chimera compile: package dependencies
Hi, In a previous post I asked for help compiling the chimera-1.65 web browse. When I ran xmkmf -a, I got the following message: bash# xmkmf -a imake -DUseInstalled -I/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/config Imakefile.c:3: Imake.tmpl: No such file or directory imake: Exit code 33. Stop. bash# Someone (I think it was Joost. Sorry if I got your name wrong. I don't have the message anymore.) was kind enough to tell me that I needed xlib6-dev to get the missing files. I've got them from the Debian site but as a result have been sent on a depedency chase. I have lost my way and would be greatful for some more help. I will include the messages I received while unpacking and installing the various packages downloaded, but first, here is a summary of the trail I have taken: - downloaded xlib6-dev_3.3-4.deb required xlib6 - I acquired xlib6_3.3-4.deb which needs libc5 (= 5.4.0-0 The installed version was 5.2.18-9. - The site says that libc5 depends on ldso = 1.7.14-2 and libc6 = 2.0.4-1. - I downloaded ldso_1.8.12-1.deb. I was confused about which libc6 to get so thought I would try to unpack install libc5 and read the error messages. Here things start to get confusing for someone just reading about what I've done. - unpacking installing ldso failed because of files it couldn't find. I don't know what they are or where to get them. - unpacking/installing libc5 also failed due to unfound files. - I thought unpacking/installing libc6 might provide the files, but that failed because of a confilict with libc5. I thought libc5 depended on libc6. - the files that ldso can't find are /usr/X11R6/lib/libXext.so.6 and /usr/X11R6/lib/libICE.so.6. - the files libc5 can't find are /usr/lib/libpthreads.so, /usr/lib/libc.so and /usr/lib/libm.so. I should mention that I am using Debian 1.1. The following is the output from the various unpack/installs that failed: # dpkg -i ldso_1.8.12-1.deb (Reading database ... 11683 files and directories currently installed.) It seems that your AMD K6 have the reported 32M hardware bug. When did you buy your CPU? Make sure your K6 is made after week 30 or contact AMD and they will give you a new one. By the way, try to compile the linux kernel. If your CPU have the bug, then you should not be able to compile the linux kernel. Daniel J. Mashao wrote: Hi My system crashes with the following output. Add a line with just `psaux' on it somewhere in /etc/modules. Then you need to run some program that actually uses a mouse; i.e., gpm or X Windows. These will need to be told to use a PS/2 mouse; run XF86Setup or gpmconfig if you've already installed them. Torsten Or just LC_ALL=es_ES (as I do it with de_DE). This sets all the LC_* variables. What LC_ALL variable will do, is *force* all variables to that setting, this however is *not* always the desired result. Let me give you an example... if you're on a modern advanced workstation (Not Linux, but one that has locales fully functional), then... LC_ALL = is_IS Will cause the result of 'date' command to be... Lau, 1 Nóv 1997. 17:24:00 GMT Which *legedly* causes some scripts to malfunction, because they expect a C style date. The date is controlled by the LC_TIME variable, but changing this one, won't matter, as the LC_ALL variable has precedence. Yes, but LC_ALL is for the lazy ones, like me :) You are right in all points, although I don't know the meaning of legedly (my dictionary does not know it, too). I would consider a script that depends on the setting of a locale as buggy, So I would encourage LC_ALL for people that want to do testing. If a script really does need C locale, it should be wise enough to set it temporarly. Thank you, Marcus -- Rhubarb is no Egyptian god. Re: perl and ISO-8859-1
Orn, Locale es_ES has Latin-1 character set as default? If so, just do a 'unsetenv LC_CTYPE', the LANG variable will see to that the LC_CTYPE is set properly. Perl doesn't complain anymour if I unset LC_CTYPE, but bash does. It doesn't let me put latin-1 characters. But I think changing ISO_8859_1 to iso_8859_1 would do the trick. It doesn't. :( Salutacions, Pere __o mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] 2:343/108.91 - _`\;_ http://casal.upc.es/~pere/ PGP key available --- (_)/ (_)Lo importante es el concepto -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Re: [OFF-TOPIC] C++ template question
On Fri, 31 Oct 1997, Shaleh wrote: How is the STL shipped then. We do not have access to its code do we?? First off, since it's an official part of Debian, yes, we must have access to the code somehow. But aside from that, yes, _any_ template library that someone provides for developers to use must be provided in source code form. The standard templates shipped with MSVC/C++ are all shipped in source code form. The best way I've found to think of templates is as compiler macros. (no, I didn't say pre-processor macros, I said compiler macros - this means that templates are more intelligent than preprocessor expansions). They don't actually generate any code until they are invoked; this is because the code they could generate can't really be determined ahead of time - how is the compiler going to know ahead of time whether 'a + b' occuring in a piece of template code will eventually refer to one of the builtin meanings of addition, or to a function of the form type type::operator+(type arg) or a function of the form type operator+(type a, type b) ? The short answer is that the compiler can't know - C++ allows so many results from similar-looking code that the compiler just can't compile templates by themselves. However, once a template is instantiated, then the compiler can go ahead and determine the basics of what the code means. This is why splitting templates into header and .c files doesn't make much sense, any more than it would make sense to try to pre-compile preprocessor macros. (This is just one of the reasons why I find templates nasty to work with, and really prefer to work in a language that is completely object-oriented - the use of templates always seems ridiculously arcane to me) -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Re: perl and ISO-8859-1
Andy, setting the locale for LC_CTYPE failed. You currently have LC_CTYPE=ISO_8859_1. Check if that locale is supported and installed on your system. I'm pretty sure you can find locales in /usr/lib/locale. I only hace en_GB there, but in /usr/share/locale I have all the others. The thing is that -I think- I have installed all the needed packages for locale support, but perl is not getting it. Bash doesn't complain about LC_CTYPE. In fact, if I unset LC_CTYPE, I can't type latin-1 characters in it. Check carefully, and note that the setting is case sensitive. That is, you might have iso_8859_1, but not ISO_8859_1. I tried, but it didn't work. Thanks for the help. Re: Thanks and a question
From: Howard S. Ostrowsky [EMAIL PROTECTED] It turns out that my problem was due to the fact that I had LD_PRELOAD set to libgnumalloc.so.5, which is apparently no longer needed with libc6. But my question is this: I had added this environment variable long ago because it was needed by some program (I can't recall which one!). But I have no idea what LD_PRELOAD is really for. This was a hack to switch to using a different memory allocator because Netscape had some buffer overrun problems. LD_PRELOAD caused libgnumalloc.so.5 to be loaded before the C library. With dpkg -l package you can check if you've already got the package and if it is a recent enough version. When you find a lot of dependencies, it makes sense to write the dependencies down in a sort of scheme and use that scheme to fetch and install packages in the right order. When you find a lot of dependencies and it looks like you'll need a lot of paper to write down the package names and their interdependency scheme, use dselect (in fact, always use dselect.) Dselect takes care of all the dependency bookkeeping for you. All you need is to have a working net connection. Choose ftp in the access menu in dselect and confirm all the defaults. If all you want is to compile chimera, then all you need is stuff like xlib6-dev, or whatever it was called like in buzz (debian 1.1.x). If you still have a buzz cd, then install it from that cd. Unfortunately, yuo have a slightly messed up system now and you have to decide if you want to: - go all the way and install debian 1.3 (and maybe eventually debian 2.0). That will take several megabytes (probably over a hundred for a more or less complete update) to download or several days to wait for an ordered cd or several miles to a decent bookstore to get a cd. Bonus is that you get the newer packages, with lots of bugs fixed (nasty samba bugs for example). - reinstall the packages you have been installing, but do it from a 1.1 cd. dpkg -i is enough to unpack, install and configure. Bonus is that it is probably faster and easier (but you do need that 1.1 cd.) My advice is to order a 1.3.1r5 debian official cd. Anyway, selecting my machine won't bring up the xdm login window (will with the sgi's...), i just get some error message from xwin32 whihc exactly is: XDMCP: Session failed: session 369920001 failed for display UKJHAG217600.ukjh.zeneca.com:0:cannot open display (UKJJHAG217600.ukjh.zeneca.com is the name of the machine from which I'm trying to connect). Meanwhile, on the linux box my /var/log/xdm-errors file is as follows: XF86Config file stuff . xdm error (pid 244): Cannot convert Internet address 156.71.78.38 to host name xdm error (pid 244): Cannot convert Internet address 156.71.78.38 to host name . . The nameserver's set OK (from dhcp), so it's not that. Any body got a clue? Ta, Martin -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . [OFF-TOPIC] linux-kernel list is down?
My apologies for the absolutely off-topic question here, but does any one know if the linux-kernel mailing list is down? I haven't received anything in the past days and that's quite strange given it is a high volume list, comparable to debian-user. Thanks, E.- -- Eloy A. X, S3 server, and #9 Motion 771
There appears to be a problem in the X3.3 packages. I have a #9 Motion 771. I can run XF86Setup, and I can enter all of the setup info. But then when I click Done and it tries to start the server for my card, it dies. It says starting server, the screen blanks, it flickers a couple times, and then the hard drive stops running and it locks there with the blank screen. Any ideas? I had X running just fine with X3.2. Anyone know if the 3.2 packages are still around somewhere? Some more info about my system: kernel 2.0.27 #9 FX Motion 771, local bus, with 4 megs of vram Eh, thats all, let me know if you need more info. -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] .
