eth0: Bogus packet size

Can anyone tell me why I get the message:

eth0: bogus packet size: 4160, status = 0x21, nxpg=0x30

on my console?  Does this indicate a "packet corruption"
of some sort?

I have a WD80x3-based LAN adapter in my Debian
machine, which is running back-to-back (via a crossover
cable) to a Win95 machine with a 3Com 3C503 adapter.
Although this should be a straightforward configuration, I
haven't been able to make it work.

If I ping my Debian box from Win95, I see the RX light on the
WD card blink each time a packet is sent, and I (usually) get
one of the above complaints.

If I ping my Win95 machine from the Debian machine, I don't
see the TX light flashing as much as I would expect (i.e. it
doesn't blink once per second).  This leads me to believe that
there is a problem with my Debian setup.  ifconfig reports
nothing out of the ordinary, except that it shows the adapter's
I/O address as 0x290 rather than 0x280 as it is jumpered.  (I
see the same thing on another Debian machine, which works fine)

Any hints would be welcome!

Is there an ELM package?

Is there a Debian package of a normal version of ELM?  I'm using
elm-me+, and it seems to have _lots_ of trouble handling MIME and PGP.
I figure I'd be better off with a mailer that doesn't know about either
of these.  Any suggestions?

hardcrack compile problems

Hi everybody, I am trying to compile hardcrack from sunsite.  I am running
into a little problem.  Here is the error that I am getting:

gcc   -DALT_ECB -O6 -mpentium -funroll-all-loops   -c cbc_cksm.c -o
cbc_cksm.o
cc1: Invalid option `pentium'
make: *** [cbc_cksm.o] Error 1

I have not changeed anythng in the source I put it in /usr/src/hardcrack.
The instruction say to do 'make' and I do and that is when I run into
problems.  If anybody could help me that would be great.  Need more info
email.  I am using kernel v2.0.31 and gcc2.7.something.  Any insight
would be great.

There could be several reasons.  

1) There are several different 56K protocols that are incompatable with each
other, you must buy the modem with the protocol that your ISP supports. If you
switch ISP's you might find that you may need to switch brands of modem to
maintian a 56K connection. 

2) It only works if the connection at the other end is a digital connection,
you will never get a 56k analog to analog connection.  In other words, if the
modem at the other end is connected to a regular phone line, it will never
connect faster than 33.6 under any circumstances.

3) The telephone circuit over which your connection travels may have only one
analog to digital conversion.  If the signal gets converted to digital at your
telephone office and is converted back to analog anywhere in transit and again
converted back to digital before being presented to the ISP's equipment, it
will never establish a 56K connection.

4) The above holds true for dialing out through a PBX at work where your voice
channel may get converted to digital for switching inside the PBX but is
reconverted to analog for transmission to the phone company over an analog
circuit ... again, you will never get a 56K connection because of the
analog->digital->analog conversion.

You can put things after your window manager in .xsession.  These will 
be executed after your window manager exits (user logs out) but before

Use Sun's JDK.  I made a package of it - it is in unstable, non-free.

If you want to use kaffe, don't use the Debian package - it is out of
date.  Instead, download a copy from www.kaffe.org and install it in
/usr/local.

And don't use the latest versions (0.9.0 - 0.9.1) if you need graphics,
because they do not support Peter Mehlitz's Biss-AWT.  He is going to
release a new version in the next few weeks that might work.

Your best bet is to use kaffe 0.8.4, with the biss-awt package.  I had it
sort of working here once.  It's very tricky to get it running.  You still
needs Sun's class libraries.

And don't expect 100% compatibility with Sun's JDK - expect more like 50%.

I do want to update the kaffe package somewhat - but I'm waiting for the
"kore" package to become available - which will reduce the dependence on
Sun's non-free class library.  Compatibility will still suck though.

Nice program.

Adding the "-s 1024" flag to ping would make the packets closer to the
size of FTP packets, and make the results more accurate.

I would suggest that the program create its own temporary directory under
/tmp and delete it when it is done, rather than insist that ~/tmp exist.
Set your umask so that others do not have write permissions on the directory
and its files _before_ you create the directory. Mkdir will fail if any of
the security problems exist.

Please do some AWK work to take the number of dropped packets into account. 
"Speed" should probably be something like:

reliability = (100 - dropped_packet_percentage) / 100
real_speed = speed * reliability

Indeed, because of the re-transmission delay for dropped packets, you
may want to increase the penalty for them above this.

This seems to limit the number of pings while not waiting longer than
necessary.  (Please note that I'm not good at shell scripts; there may
be a much better way to do this - it just worked for me).

  It would need some additional work to make it more resistant to
problems like the ulimit -u thing, though.  E.g., there is an unknown
host (debian.med.miami.edu) in README.mirrors, and the ping error
message regarding this host should be killed, I think.  I also noticed
during testing that there is a big difference in results between
subsequent runs of the script - perhaps it would be better to make ping
run a little longer.  Lastly, it would be nice if the script FTPed the
README.mirrors file itself (from ftp.debian.org) if not present.

  Other than the above, I found your script very useful, and I'll save
it here - it may be useful to check Simtel, sunsite, etc. mirrors too
;-)

It's even easier. All you need to do is add the line:
start-xdm
to /etc/X11/config

See /usr/doc/X11/debian.README for a description of this.

Hmm, I don't have fvwm installed, but probably what happens (I'm guessing)
is that system.fvwmrc is loaded, then since you copied it to your home
directory it's loaded again, and that causes some errors. Check the man
page to see if fvwm does this. In any case it's likely that system.fvwmrc
isn't designed to go in a home directory. 

You want to have your .fvwmrc modify the defaults set in system.fvwmrc,
rather than start over again from the bottom. If you email me the
system.fvwmrc I might can tell you what's wrong better. Though I'm sure
someone else will jump in who already knows. :)

Database advice?

Hi everyone,
   I was wondering if I could get some advice on what database I should
use.  I'm predicting I'll need to use a database for 3 things.  First,
personal use on my linux box.  I'd just like to get familiar with SQL,
setting up a db, etc.  I'm thinking of using this to help out the debian
testing team, so I should probably learn soon if I'm going to have it
working for the 2.0 testing.  Second, I'm planning on converting a bunch
of data from work to a db accessable from the web.  Finally, I'll probably
take a class using Oracle fall of next year.  I'd like to use the same db
at home and work.  It should give me a good start for working in Oracle.
A nice GUI would be helpful.  SOLID looks nice and received high ranks in
LJ recently.  I was also thinking of progreSQL.  Does anyone have any
advice on this?

Is there an advantage of the rotatelogs program over the savelog script?
I like the script so much, I use it on a sun that I admin and for rotating
my own user logs (e.g. procmails log).

Hi,
I am new to Debian Linux and I am having problems with xdm and fvwm.
When I used Red Hat Linux, all I had to do to get Xwindows to start at
login was to edit the /etc/inittab to go default to run level 4.  Now, I
am running Debian 1.30 and do not even see a reference to xdm in the
/etc/inittab.  I am obviously missing some key point, can anyone help?
Also, when I startx manually, the system will not use my .fvwmrc.  I get
too many errors to list here, but all I did was copy the
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fvwm/system.fvwm to my $HOME/.fvwmrc and tried to add
an additional xterm at start-up, and change to setroot color to solid
SteelBlue.
I don't believe these changes made any impact because when I keep the
defaults in my .fvwmrc, and try and refresh fvwm, I get the same errors.

Has anyone had similar problems?  Please let me know if you have.

The modem hangs off 0x2F8, with IRQ 3 the active
interrupt request.  'setserial -a /dev/ttyS1' verifies this
data.

But if I say (from root):

# cu -s 115200 -l /dev/ttyS1

I get a "Permission denied" error, even though
'ls -l' shows /dev/ttyS1 to be read/writable by
user&group.

If I go to kermit and say [this if from the Serial-HOWTO]:

c-kermit> set line /dev/ttyS1
c-kermit> set carrier-watch off
c-kermit> set speed 115200
c-kermit> c

the kermit-shell hangs and I do not get an OK prompt.
But, if I toggle to another Linux screen and say

# cat /proc/interrupts

interrupt 3 is shown with a 0-count.  As soon as
kermit is killed, then interrupt 3 disappears from
/proc/interrupts.

All of this, BTW, happens after I successfully dial
out from Win95, and reboot to Linux from the rescue
floppy, ie, without powering off the CPU.

Once the device is configured to a known location, either by
your BIOS or by isapnptools, then it should work. What is
the problem exactly when you try to use the modem? If
the port doesn't seem to exist to Linux you might need to
uncomment some parts of /etc/rc.boot/0setserial which
from memory only enables the first two ports by default.
I had a PnP modem working here while testing it, using
isapnptools.

Hopefully some others will reply to this, becuase you should have been
able to install from CD (Ihave always done it on the net, so I can't
comment). Anyway, when you copied the entire CD to harddisk, did you
preserve all the symlinks properly? I would expect dselect to bomb if you
did not. Then it should be a matter of pointing dselect to the base
directory where you have put debian (i.e. the directory that contains
bo, hamm, etc. After that, you should be able to select stable or
unstable. Cheers.

I'd like to try this too, where do you get rvplayer5.x in the first place.
It doesn't seem to beDebian package.

Also, I've put an index.html file on the homepage space on my ISPs NT (ugh)
machine. It includes a line:



and vi.gif is in the same disk area as index.html, but the image doesn't
appear (though the rest of the .html file does) when I open it with netscape
4.0. Can anyone provide a clue. TIA

and i executed dselect but it couldn't find the /stable/binary-i386
directory. I have selected /bo/binary-i as this directory an it lets me
choose the packages to install but when proceeding with installation it
aborts because of many erros.

What am i doing wrong?

Low speed response w/ Logitech Trackball

Hi!

I use a Logitech Trackball (Marble), attached to PS/2 port, and i
cannot get it work fast enough in X, so my thumb gets really tired... Is
there any way to change the responsiveness in X ? I know how to do it w/
gpm, but it is useless in this case, even if i configure gpm to generate a
fifo where the X server reads from. I don't feel like editing the kernel
source, since i do not believe it is a good way to accomplish the
adjustment.

The driver included (for DOS) allows me to change this speed, and it works
fine, but i am trying to erradicate DOS for Debian operation. It's a bit
depressing that i have to boot w/ DOS if i am to be able to use my
peripherals (Trackball, GUS Extreme), and also a security hole at boot
time. I miss LILO :.-)

Other possible option could be attaching the trackball at a COM port, but
it is a bad one for me, because i would need an adaptor.

Please, help me to throw away DOS from my life...  :-)

Any comments about PS/2 port?

log rotation package?

Hi people,

Is there a .deb log rotation package?  You know what I mean, just
something to swap out the logs in /var/.. every week and rename them
*.1, *.2, ..  up to the number of weeks you want to keep them.  This has
been on my mind for quite some time, because I've been thinking that
it's just gotta be on the cd somewhere, but I've looked and searched all
over,..  With 980 packages, maybe I missed it, though.  

I saw the remark in /etc/cron.daily/sysklogd, but I'm having a difficult
time imagining that all debian users write their own scripts for this
procedure.  I know I could do it, but it wouldn't be a pretty sight.

io was removed some time ago from the driver.
The irq should be enough to detect the card and will allow to find the ioport 
magically I think.
Actually, unless your setup is really special, it should autodetect the card 
automagically. The auto-detection routine has been improved lately.

2.0.32 kernel: strange error

I just compiled and succesfully booted the new 2.0.32 kernel. But I am
getting a strange error message which I also got with 2.0.31 and not with
any lower 2.0.x kernel.

I am using modules for most drivers. Only drivers that are needed at boot
time, like ide and ext2fs, are compiled-in. I use kerneld to load the
modules automatically. I have been doing that succesfully for a long time.

The problem is with the 3c509 driver. I have a 3COM 3c509 card and an El
Cheapo NE2000 clone, which have always worked flawlessly. The relevant
lines in /etc/conf.modules are:

alias eth0 3c509
alias eth1 ne
options 3c509 io=0x300
options ne io=0x280

I supplied the 'io' parameters because
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/networking/net-modules.txt says that probing
for these cards is unreliable.

Now, when I boot a 2.0.31 or 2.0.32 kernel, I get this error message when
kerneld tries to load the 3c509 driver:

symbol for parameter io not found

and in the syslog there is a line:

Nov 20 04:17:40 blaakmeer insmod: /lib/modules/2.0.32/net/3c509.o: symbol for 
parameter io not found

I have discovered that removing the 'options' line for the 3c509 solves
the problem, but I can't find any documentation describing this change in
behaviour. Does anybody know what's wrong?

This file is created by the installation software when you "configure the
network". This is why dpkg doesn't know about it. If no network
configuration is made, or you answer no to the first question, the file is
never created. The solution is your favorite editor.

   Remove hdb.  Remove hda and move hdb to hda.  Swap hda and hdb.  Try hda in
   another machine.

   Boot dos(ick!), run FDISK, then run FDISK /MBR.

I tried removinnng hdb, and it did not help.  Given that, swapping the
drives did not seem likely to be helpful.  I had also done fdisk /mbr,
and  it does not seem to have helped.

I did end up putting the incooperative drive is another computer, since I
had three drives for two computers.  (I could get some additional 80 MB
drives, but it doesn't seem that installing them is worth the effort.)

In the slower computer, the incooperative drive works fine, althought
Linux did complain about an invalid partition table until I repartioned
the disk under linux.  (The error was something that mentioned a `sun
disklabel' and a bad magic number of .  Windows 95 seemed happy
using the drive in the original machine.)

I'm inclined to believe that there is some sort of wierd timing problem,
but I do not know.

In any case, I don't have the opporrtunity to experiment futhur, because
that hard drive (and the slower of the two machines) is soon going to
be a critical router at my school.

It would be stupid to enforce restrictions like that on the
messages. Your sorting problems should be solved in another way. I
suggest you sort by the resent field. All messages in this list
contain the header: "Resent-From: debian-user@lists.debian.org"

I think I had this same problem.  Let me have a look at your
/etc/init.d/network.

I thought it was something that I scewed up during the install but it looks
like it might be a bug. It sets the local interface as the default route rather
than setting it to what is supposed to be the gateway. (looks like the local
interface somehow gets plugged into $GATEWAY).

Kernel build and install problems

I just used make-kpkg to build a new kernel for the unstable 
installation on this machine.  I built the new kernel primarily because 
I was (and am) having trouble getting the ethernet module to load at 
boot.

I had some surprising trouble building this kernel.  I (and indeed, 
make) could not as86 or ld86.  I tried searching in the Packages files 
and even Packages-Master.  I grepped the contents of several (likely in 
my opinion) packages but could not find them in unstable.

Ultimately, I just mounted the stable systems usr partition on a 
directory in /mnt/ and linked the stables versions to unstable.  I was 
pleasently surprised by the fact that this seemed to work -- at least 
the kernel compiled and the machine boots the new kernel.

Are these two rather important programs not in unstable?  I guess that I 
am more than just a little mystified as to why they are not present on 
my machine?

local net problems

I have installed debian hamm (on an EIDE Pentium about a week ago).
Kernel 2.0.29 (since configured, compiled, and installed a 2.0.30 
kernel).

There are two weird problems that I am experiencing...

The first problem is that the ethernet module is not loading.
But typing "insmod /lib/modules/2.0.30/net/3c509.o" loads
the module without error.

An "ifconfig eth0 199.79.129.32 up" works without error.

"route add -net 199.79.129.0" correctly sets up the
route.

After the above, ping, telnet, and rlogin all work
on the local network.

I recompiled the kernel yesterday.  The 3c509 
module still did not load (I also added the 
"options addr=0x300 irq=10" line that exists
in the conf.modules file for the stable 
release machine -- still no help).

I noticed that there is mention that kerneld might
not work if /usr is not mounted and that if this is
the case that a work around is to copy a librry to
/lib (which I did and created the link).  I really 
did not expect this "fix" to work as all other modules 
seem to load ok.

parallel zip and scsi-kontroller conflict

If I try to use the zip-drive "insmod ppa" fails (maybe

Sure it is possible. Assuming that your configuration is NT-Workstations in one
or more workgroups, the linux box can exists just fine. You are going to need
some software that I do not think has made it to Debian yet.  Look around on
sunsite.unc.edu for ksmbfs and rumba.  Rumba is the opposite of samba, it lets
a linux machine use SMB resources as if they were native linux.

Once the device is configured to a known location, either by
your BIOS or by isapnptools, then it should work. What is
the problem exactly when you try to use the modem? If
the port doesn't seem to exist to Linux you might need to
uncomment some parts of /etc/rc.boot/0setserial which
from memory only enables the first two ports by default.
I had a PnP modem working here while testing it, using
isapnptools.

RAID controllers?

Does anyone have experience with RAID controllers such as Mylex DAC960 or
DPT2144UWR ??

I assume they're supported under linux, right?

Question, do any of these support automatic recovery? I heard the DPT
needs to be booted up into DOS in order to perform a rebuild... Is that
true? What about the Mylex?

Although an interactive rebuild is fine, auto recovery would be wonderful.

running off an AMD K6 platform.  Win95 uses a
Plug-and-Play modem from Computer Peripherals, Inc.
(a ViVa 56LC-SM).  Linux, however, cannot dial out
on this device; in fact, cu/kermit cannot even connect
to the device.

I have verified with setserial, /proc/interrupts, minicom,
and my BIOS configuration that IRQs and other system
parameters are reasonably set.

The Serial-HOWTO indicates that PnP modems are
*not* recommended, but that people are known to
have got them working.

If so, how?  I have David Howell's pnp module/driver
software, but I'm reluctant to install and use it.  Does
anyone have hard evidence that a ViVa 56LC-SM will
work under Linux?

I didn't compile it as a module.  I compiled support for auto loading
of modules, but didn't compile anything as modules.

No.

I'm afraid that my question about wild interrupt detection was probably
misleading.  COM1 and COM2 were disabled for some reason, and when I
enabled them the warning about wild interrupt:5 disappeared.  Or, if
I left them disabled and removed the modem (COM 4 IRQ 3) the message also
disappeared.  This doesn't make sense to me, but it probably means
simply that there's an unknown device using IRQ 5 and this was detected
during initialization of the serial ports.

For what it's worth, here's a snip from /usr/src/linux/.config

Firstly, did you compile ne2000 etc. as modules?  If you just answer
`yes' then they aren't modules, they're compiled into the kernel
itself.

Second, you probably want to install the Debian package
`kernel-package'.  It lets you make a Debian package of your kernel
and automates installation of it with LILO and onto floppy disks.

hitch.  then I ran make modules and then make modules_install and that 
seemed to go ok too as it created a directory called 
/usr/lib/modules/2.0.30 with a few modules in it.  only problem is it's 
missing ppp.o, lp.o, ne.o, slip.o and the kernel gives errors indicating 
that when it tries to load them.  when I look in /usr/lib/modules/2.0.0 
they are still in there but if I copy them to the same place in 2.0.30 it 
gives me errors saying that those modules are for the wrong kernel.  how do 
I get the ones I need where they are supposed to be?

Wild interrupt detection, and ATI bus mouse

My ATI bus mouse doesn't work, with either GPM or X.  But first, what does
"Wild interrupt detection" mean?  While booting I get the message
   Wild interrupts found: 5
The message is generated by setserial, in /etc/rc.boot/0setserial.
It's interesting that IRQ5 is the interrupt of the non-working mouse.
I can't find any conflicting device, and the mouse works fine with
Windows 95 and ATI's test program.

Because of the above message, I imagine that my problems begin before gpm
is even started.  However, I'll mention a few details;
- I compiled the kernel with ati bus mouse support
- /dev/mouse points to /dev/atibm which looks like
  crw---   1 root sys   10,   3 Oct 12 14:38 atibm
- I run "gpm -t bm" or "gpm -t bm -m /dev/atibm
- The message returned by gpm is
   /dev/mouse: no such device   (or /dev/atibm: no such device)

xinit won't load that lib. And the package should be installed though
all those many libraries missing are strange.

Remove hdb.  Remove hda and move hdb to hda.  Swap hda and hdb.  Try hda in
another machine.

Try looking at samba and/or ksmbfs. samba lets you appear to be a SMB
server, and ksmbfs lets you mount SMB volumes (if the appropriate option
is in your kernel or available as a module).

ownership and permissions

Hi,

If root initiates pon (pppd is owned by root, group dip), how can I 
setup /etc/ppp/ip-up so that it runs /home/user/.checkformail as user 
(not root)?
I know several ways root can get the job without being user, `here' 
`there' in fetchmailrc is one, and I know I can change permissions on 
pppd to run pon as user, though I've never been able to get that to 
work, but I'd like it to run as user regardless of who initiates pon.  
I didn't find much in man su.

Speaking of su, I have a root window (rxvt -e su --) in a user X-window 
session, and I seem to not be able to run X apps from the root window 
due to the DISPLAY env variable, but it is identical to user's (0:0), 
and running xhost complains about an invalid magic cookie, unable to 
open display.  What do I need to do to get X apps to run from a root 
window in a user's X-window session?

This is my first (non-test) message from exmh, so I hope it looks ok.

Debian <-> NT interaction

My office runs NT in a peer to peer configuration.  We use foxpro alot. 
Is there anyway that I could run Debian on my machine at work, so I can
use what I am already comfortable with, but maintain a connectivity with
the rest of the network?  That is can I stick a debian machine into an NT
network, access and work with the foxpro database, and communicate with
the rest of the network?  I am afraid I already know the answer to this
question, but hope springs eternal.  I don't really have the technical
expertise to convert the network over to linux, so I can't really sugest
that.   
The office network is not yet setup to allow access from home. When it is
should I request anything specific in the configuration to make access
through debian easier?
