Check out a utility called fsdext2,
http://www.globalxs.nl/home/p/pvs/index.htm
It is a beta of a read-only utility to mount ext2 partitions under
Win95. I have had limited success with it(locked up Win95 solid) but it
looks real promising. The author is on hiatus while he moves.

This is because printers designed for PCs expect the MS-DOS at
the end of a line instead of . There information about this in either
the Printing-HOWTO or the Printing-Usage-HOWTO (I forget which). The
easiest way is to install either apsfilter or magicfilter, either of which
will handle both text or PostScript files (using ghostscript).

You will need to have it in /etc/fstab with a user option to do this.

keyboard locks

1998-01-29 Thread Harry Anderson
I'm trying to install debian for the first time, from the LSL Debian
1.3.1 CD.
If this helps, I have:
an AMD K6 on an Intel 430TX chipset installing from the CD via MSDOS-6.

Everything is fine when I boot up - I get the 'uncompressing Linux...'
message and the screen scrolls through all the hardware as it says in
the installation html document.

BUT: when the scrolling hardware screen gets to the keyboard, I get a
pause and then 'keyboard timed out' flashes up twice. The installation
then scrolls through more hardware and puts up the 'Color-or-Monochrome
Dialog Box'.

Trouble is that the keyboard has locked and I can't do anything except a
hardware reset.
The keyboard has a PS/2 connection, but should that cause any bother?

Anybody got any suggestions? Please?

- Harry

Yes. Install the dmsdosfs package from sunsite.unc.edu (you have to search
for the correct path, I don't know it. Probably something with
kernel/driver/fs in it). Read the documentation!

Another tip: Read the documentation!

There are some tools to access it form dos (perhaps windows too), but I
never used them. Certainly there are security issues involved. I don't want
Windows to have access to the linux file system. Try to involve your
favourite search engine.

You have a Pro Audio Spektrum 16 compatible card.

>From /usr/src/linux/drivers/sound/README.cards (outdated, but anyway):

  "ProAudioSpectrum 16 support",
- Answer 'y'_ONLY_ if you have a Pro Audio Spectrum _16_,
Pro Audio Studio 16 or Logitech SoundMan 16 (be sure that
you read the above list correctly). Don't answer 'y' if you
have some other card made by Media Vision or Logitech since they
  are not PAS16 compatible.

ProAudioSpectrum 16 and compatibles
---

PAS16 has a SB emulation chip which can be used together with the native
(16 bit) mode of the card. To enable this emulation you should configure
the driver to have SB support too (this has been changed since version
3.5-beta9 of this driver).

With current driver versions it's also possible to use PAS16 together with
another SB compatible card. In this case you should configure SB support
for the other card and to disable the SB emulation of PAS16 (there is a
separate questions about this).

With PAS16 you can use two audio device files at the same time. /dev/dsp
(and
/dev/audio) is connected to the 8/16 bit native codec and the /dev/dsp1 (and
/dev/audio1) is connected to the SB emulation (8 bit mono only).

It is always a good idea to read the documentation:

$ zless /usr/doc/HOWTO/Sound-HOWTO.gz

(if you have the doc-linux package installed)

Bye,
Marcus

as root, issue
mount -t [filesystem type] [device] [mount point]

this is normally

mount -t msdos /dev/fd0 /floppy

but make sure you have a directory called /floppy in your root directory
to act as a mount point.
Apparently, mount /floppy as a normal user also works, although i've never
tried it.

Then cp ~/myfile /floppy.

you may need to make sure the read-write permissions are correct on
/floppy, though.

If you want to eject the disk you'd better

umount /floppy

this cleanly unmounts the disk and makes sure everything is written on it.

I suggest you have a read of some of the pretty good online users guides
etc. I can't remember the URLS, but Linux Gazette (www.linuxgazette.com)
has a link to a linux resources page, which in turn has a link to the
linux documentation project (LPD) which has lots of stuff to read on it.

Ok. You also need to install (still using disks) the pcmcia packages.
You will need pcmcia-cs and pcmcia-modules to match your installed
kernel version. Once you have installed these, it should then
recognize your network card and let you connect to the network. Since
we have dhcp service here, I also installed dhcpcd when I did this not
too long ago. This should give you enough network service to be able
to use dselect's ftp method to install the rest (or the NFS method, but
I didn't have an NFS server with Debian available when I did it, so I
just used the ftp method.)

After you install everything, you should compile a custom kernel (as
usual); install the pcmcia-source package and compile a custom version
of the pcmcia modules to match your new kernel.

You should also check out the Linux laptop home page at
http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/kharker/linux-laptop/ which has more
information about running Linux on a laptop than you wanted to know.
It appears as though there is in fact a link to a page dedicated to the
Compaq Elite series there. I found the Linux Laptop Home Page to be
invaluable in getting my laptop started and tuned under Linux.

question on using lpr

1998-01-29 Thread BobHock65
I just installed Debian version of Linux on my PC. I created a sample C
program using Vi Editor. When I entered the command "lpr proga.c" it looked
like this:

1st line
  2nd line
 3rd line
4th line ..(you get the idea).

I am new to UNIX; however, I have been in the computer industry for 30 years
(MVS, VM, Windows) and have never seen anything like this. What is so
incredible is how each line aligned itself in a staggering formation. Anyways,
can somebody help me. What do I need to do to format this properly? Is there
any documentation on the arguments and options?

Also, how can I copy a file from my harddrive to a floppy (i.e., A: in Windows
or MS-DOS). I am taking a class on UNIX and may need to transport files from
my PC to the lab.

Thanks in advance,
Bob Hockensmith

Hi experts,

I tried to install XFREE86, but I have problems in selecting the correct
options for my graphic
card and my monitor.

According to the handbook the Omnibook has a graphic card supporting SVGA
but the laptop monitor is VGA.

I tried:

   X-ServerGraphic Card MonitorResult

VGA16 unsupported VGA VGA 640x480 black screen

SVGA unsupported VGA VGA 640x480 X works with
resolution 320x240

(not satisfying)

   SVGA wd90c24a2VGA 640x480 I see some
pixels on the screen

   SVGA wd90c24a VGA 640x480 I see some
pixels on the screen

My handbook says that the omnibook has a Western Digital Graphic Card and
it should be wd90c24a2.

What options should I use? I want to use X only for the laptop monitor, not
for an external monitor.

Does anybody have expieriences with LINUX/XFREE86 on an Omnibook 4000 C?

Please send any answeres to me directly, because I am not on this list.

Thanks for any help

No. But you can do it *without* the floppies. ;-)

I suggest you install the kernel-source and kernel-package packages,
and read their documentation.

Now that I look, it seems that plip is included in the base Debian
kernel (kernel-image-2.0.32, at lesat) as a module. Have you actually
tried using it?

Find out which kernelversion the patches are made for. Download the
official kernel sources from ftp.kernel.org. You cannot use the kernel
source provided by Debian, because they may already contain some
patches.

Unpak the kernel source into /usr/local/src. This should create the
directory /usr/local/src/linux. Enter this directory and type the
command: patch -p0 < some-path/patchfile

Now you are ready to compile the kernel. I suggest you install the
Debian package "kernel-package". This package contains scripts that
allow you to easily compile the kernel into a ready-to-install
kernel-image.deb package.

I have different Sound Card, but may be my recommendation will work for you.
I have Pro-Multimedia Sound Card (I failed to find any info about this card on
the Web). There are 3 partitions on computer (Dos+Win95+Linux)

Compile sound.o as module, following Howto-SOUND. Only allow Sound Blaster,
Sound Blaster Pro options. Install your module. It is very probable that
sound still will not work. Reboot in DOS (to initialize card) and Load Linux
thru loadlin. If you Load DOS and reboot thru Ctrl-Alt-Del - may not work.

For me this was the ONLY WAY which made my sound card work under Linux.

Both smail and sendmail can do this. I never used sendmail, but I can tell
you what to do with smail.

If you install the smail package, it will start smailconfig.

It asks you what kind of system you have. Answer 1, a internet host.
It will also ask you whether to use a smarthost. Enter the name your ISPs
mailserver.

Then say that all outbound mails should be send using the smarthost and
you are done.

Write your emails offline and call "runq" in ip-up to send these mails
when you connect.

What I want is the system that I can 'send' email while my machine is

unfortunately they just write error messages about the email address not

I can use netscape but I have several users on my machine and it would not
be economical to let each person connect separately or for too long.

Any ideas appreciated.

I like WindowMaker, it's fast and stable and under active developement.
You can find a copy at:

It's another Next clone so it looks a lot like Afterstep only, IMHO,
better.

lprm not working for users

1998-01-29 Thread Marsh
I just installed Debian 1.3 and all is mostly well. However, when a
non-root user attempts to remove a print job from the queue lprm gives
a "permission denied" message. The lp executables all seem to be
installed suid:

-rwsr-sr-x 1 root lp 13208 Feb 11 1997 /usr/bin/lprm

and the spool path is: /var/spool/lpd/lp

drwxrwsr-x 2 root lp 1024 Jan 27 11:52 lp

Did I miss something?

Hi,

thank you very much, the problem is solved. The error occured because of

Nevertheless you should be on network like my.home or such ->
debian.my.home

If you use smail 3.2.100, then there are bugreports about this. Check the
bug tracking system on debian.org for details.

As a workaround, install procmail and use a ' mda "formail -s procmail" '

I did something similar when I was converting from a.out to an elf

The problem with 'Expect' is that it takes up a lot of hard drive

I need to have a more flexible expect/send than chat provides.

Parallel port patches

<-Please, reply to this message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] ->

Hi to everybody.

I have downloaded from the internet some "patches"
for my parallel port. The objective is to finally use
the printer and the Zip drive, but not at the same time.

Basically I have 2 questions:
1) How should I "install" these patches and then configure
it all to finally be able to print?

2) Do you know if this problem (or bug, whatever you want to
say ;-) ) is being solutioned in Debian 2.0? If not, I think
it would be interesting to correct the problem, because there's
a lot of people who use a printer and a Zip drive.

Well, thank you.

inbound traffic problem with hamm

i'm having some problems (well, COMPLETE problems) with incoming pop and

the pertinent crontabs i'm having trouble with (which were working
pre-upgrade)

10,20,30... * * * * /usr/bin/fetchmail
10 * * * * /usr/bin/tin -q -r -S -n

in my .fetchmailrc i have "poll pop.primary.net protocol pop3 user jhonold
password PASSWORD fetchall". running fetchmail -v last night yielded
"unknown host debian -- you need a . in your hostname). debian is the name
of my localhost (not on a network). i used smailconfig to set my outgoing
message domain to bigfoot.com. the newer smail has unfortunately bound
both bigfoot.com and debian -- and uses debian as the first, i guess.
running fetchmail -v this morning said "smtp connect to debian failed -
connection refused". i tried telnetting to 127.0.0.1 smtp and i got the
connection refused as well.

with tin it says it's connecting, and that posting is okay. then it hangs.
i noticed after leaving my box on overnight my system was SLOW in the
morning. turns out i had about 10 stale tins running from my crontab -- i
killed them and it was fine. i can send and recieve email/news from
netscape, so i know that's not the problem. any ideas?

Ehm, no. a+s means "add an `s' bit to all (user + group + other)
permissions". That's not what you want.

Anyway. UUCP has a weird setup, but it works. I needed the following:

- uucico anly available to users in the group "uucp"
- uucico must be setgid "dialout" to access a tty device.

Those points conflict, you cannot make a program setgid dialout and
only executable for group uucp at the same time.

So, uucico is now placed in the directory /usr/lib/uucp, which has
permissions:

drwxr-x--- 2 uucp uucp 3072 Jan 29 16:40 .

Only users in the group uucp can access files in /usr/lib/uucp. So
now we have satisfied both above mentioned points.

If you want other users to be able to use uucico, relax the permissions
on the directory /usr/lib/uucp ..

Please excuse my ignorance, but why would you want to do that? Why not have
"cron" start a UUCICO process at regular intervals? If a UUCICO process is
still on the line, the new one will automatically die; thus no conflicts!

You should add "sound" to /etc/modules (it actually is explained in my
howto in great detail. I won't bite you, but please read it again, perhaps
it is now clearer how things work together).

The automatic kernel loading by kerneld will remove all settings from the
sound module, so you should really add the line, so the sound module will
never be unloaded (except you explicitely do so).

There are default fonts on your card, but they need to be activated by a
dummy sound font bank. As this ships with the sound card, it is no
problem. However, it can't be included in the module due to obvious
copyright problems.

how to integrate non-US AND local packages to dselect

1998-01-29 Thread clasen
Hi

I want to install debian 1.3.1r6 on several machines via NFS.

Is there a way to offer all packages to dselect when non-US packages and
local (self-made) packages are located in different sub-directories.

I imagine a directory-structure like this:

 /pub/debian/bo # with a link from "stable"
/contrib
/non-US
/local

Just so others on the list are aware... I have various drives on one of my
systems with the first hard drive containing win3.11 and the rest linux
ext2. I had the win95 upgrade sitting on the shielf for the last year and
decided to finally set it up.

It installed safely without touching any other drives (tho the generic
drivers it uses didn't find a single device, all of which i had to install
manually :) ).

Anyhow just a note for others that win95 didn't give me any problems
concerning booting linux or messing up the linux drives.

noticed the same thing. Any ideas on this?

Hmm got off track there but i had to ask on that...

Now i also have an old IBM PS/2 Model 80 386 and an even
older PC2000 XT (8086 maybe) sitting in the closet. The IBM runs fine with
it's 2-4 mgs of ram (i forget right now) and it's 70 mg hard drive with
dos and win3.11 installed. The XT i don't even know if it works yet. Now
what i want is a direct connection from these to my P200 server -without-
the use of any software. ie a dumb terminal.

What would be best to use for this.. would a cable from serial
port to serial work? Basically even if i took the 70 mg drive out i still
want to turn this on and have a login prompt from the server. Any help on
this would be great.

dhcpcd broke?

1998-01-29 Thread Richard Kilgore
I just upgraded all my systems to the latest hamm stuff, and
everything seems to work fine except for dhcpcd on the host
connected to my cable modem. Here's my current software:

Linux version 2.0.29 ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version 2.7.2.3)

You can install ash and make that your sh; I also have bash 2.01
binaries built on my bo (libc5) system; however, I wasn't careful
about the version numbers when I made them so they don't really fit
into debian's version scheme, (namely, the version number looks like a
maintainer's version number, whereas I am not the bash maintainer) and
you'll have to remember to upgrade them manually if/when you go to
hamm. If you want them, they're available at
http://www.math.jhu.edu/~martind/bash/

Hi Bob:

You have to install the print spool software. Use deselect.

Since you are a beginner, install the simple lpr package.

Of course!!! Debian users to the rescue come here!

There are two printer spooling systems packages in Debian:

LPR and LPRng, both are BSD style, so initially think that you do not have
an "lp" command wich is part of a SystemV printing system (HPUX, IRIX...)

I suggest you install LPRng wich is and enhaced version of LPR
(commands and options are the same), also install magicfilter wich will
configure you the printer system in a very easy way, then with
"lpr " you'll print it. Easy.

LPRng also comes with an "lp" shell script wich you will let you to
interface to the print system ala System V. I think there are also lpstat,
etc.. shell scripts...

There are many methods to instally packages, the most simple for me when
I only want to upgrade/install one package is: download/get from CD the
package, then type as root: "dpkg -i ". "-i" stands
for install.

I hope this helps,

If something is not clear, don't doubt to repost it

There is no "lp" command in Debian, but there is an "lpr" command, available
from the "lpr" and "lprng" packages.

No. You can start "dselect", point it to your CD, and select for example the
"lpr" package for install. "dselect" will skip packages that are already
installed.

You're not specifying any libraries against which to link, so the only
library used is the C library. You should specify that you want to link
against the aa library, so probably you need "gcc info.c -laa".

You got the answer before: nearly any windowmanager offers virtual desks
using _one_ Xserver. So you can easily have multiple desks. 16MB are
sufficant for doing this, but you can never have enough (just in case you
want to start netscape4 and xemacs).

Actually, this is a feature, and you should be glad for the demonstartion
the watchdog gave you :-) By the way, the watchdog *was* able to do what
he has to. He did restart your system, didn't he. This is his purpose, if
he detects a "systemoverload" (lets call it that way).

This whole prozess has nothing to do with multitasking but with your
hardware. If you start 100 prozesses each using 1 MB of data, then linux
can handle this well. It is your lack of RAM and the slowness of a
harddisk which slows *everything* down as the kernel has to do *lots* of
swapping.

Without the watchdog, you could kill the prozesses and everything would be
OK again.

This "systemoverload" could also happen due to a deny-of-service
attack. And in this case the watchdog will bring the system to a sane
state by doing a clean shutdown and a reboot. Or do you want to watch your
server (if you had one) 24h/7days a week?

Ciao,
Martin

There is no locale called "us" on your system. It should be "en_US" I
believe.

Check /etc/profile for a line LANG=us and change it.

You can do a "dpkg -L wg15-locale|less" to get a listing of the locales
installed on your system. Just in case en_US is wrong.

This is the Motif library (version 2.*). Lesstif cannot replace it

Upgrade or downgrade Bash. This problem is specific to the 2.00
version in 1.3.

The error occurs because bash parses the first two parenthesis as part
of a (( )) construction (which has a special meaning). Wether this is
an error or a feature is a subject of discussion, but the problem
dissappears in version 2.01

Netscape communicator helper applications and bash

1998-01-29 Thread Jan Weytjens
I have Apache (from the debian distribution 1.3) running on a Toshiba 530CDT
notebook running Linux 2.0.30 (debian 1.3).
I also have Netscape communicator 4.04 on the same machine.
When I configure edit preferences navigator applications to use acroread to
open URLs pointing to pdf files as follows:

DescriptionPortable Document Format
MIME type application/pdf
Suffixs pdf
Application /usr/bin/acroread %s

I get an error when I open URLs that point to pdf documents.

The error is in the shell command communicator tries to run with sh:

((/usr/bin/acroread /tmp/MOsomething.pdf); rm /tmp/MOsomething.pdf)&

where MOsomething.pdf is a temporary file in the /tmp directory.
The problem is the (mis)matching of the parentheses.
When run in an xterm window, I get the same error message.
Apparently, the problem is with bash (/bin/sh is a link to /bin/bash) which
complains about about the following syntax:

((echo A); echo B)

Interestingly, at work we use bash on both SGI and Sun workstations.
bash on Sun does have the same problem, while bash on SGI doesn't.

Is there a clean solution?

OK. I had to make one small change because I don't have a ttyS0, but
I do have a modem on ttyS1.

% make testsp
cc testsp.c -o testsp
% strace ./testsp
execve("./testsp", ["./testsp"], [/* 31 vars */]) = 0
...
open("/dev/ttyS1", O_RDWR

It stops at this point, with "TR" lit on my modem. If I happened to
have my modem set to auto-answer, and something connected, *then* the
open() would complete.

If I already had something on there that had set CLOCAL, like mgetty,
it would have run through. BTW:

% strace ./testsp2
...
open("/dev/ttyS1", O_RDWR|O_NONBLOCK) = 3
ioctl(3, TCGETS, {0x1002 /* B??? */ -opost -isig -icanon -echo ...}) = 0
ioctl(3, SNDCTL_TMR_START, {B9600 -opost -isig -icanon -echo ...}) = 0

Given that I received a private email that ddd-2.2.2-1 had the same problem,
this looks like the likely explanation. Unfortunately, though I am the

Hello All,

Sorry if this too far off topic, but I thought there might be others out

Devon,

I'm not completely clear on a couple of things with pgp yet... By way of
explanation, I'm really a newbie at Linux, having migrated over from Win
3.1/95. I was using MIT pgp 2.6.2 with an RSA 2047 bit key. It's been
awhile since I've really used pgp and wanted to update myself. I downloaded
the freeware MIT 5.0 version, installed it on my Debian machine and was
under the impression I _had_ to
generate the Diffie-Hellman keys to be able to communicate with other 5.0
users.

During the install process, however, I noticed immediately I was missing
my pgp.cfg file. While thrashing around the pgp newsgroups and Deja News
looking for answers, the impression I got out there is that freeware 5.0 pgp
really isn't all that great, and is useless when it comes to communicating
with folks that are usng RSA keys.

At this point, I've deleted freeware 5.0. I'll probably go back to MIT
pgp 2.6.2 and just copy my old keys to the Debian side of the house, at
least until I've educated myself further on the 2.6.2 vs. 5.x varieties. I
didn't really find any clear cut answers out there while looking around, but
so far it looks like I'm better off with my RSA keys...

If you have a different take on this or can enlighten me, I'd like to
hear from you... BTW, Is there a Debian build for US pgp 2.6.2?

Star Office, Latin 2 and many more

1998-01-29 Thread Bostjan Jerko
Hello !

I have 2 questions:

1) I tried to install old version of Star Office (the only one I have), but I
get error message, that I am missing libXm.so.2 ? I guessed it will be part
of lesstif package, but I was wrong. Any ideas where to get this library ?
Oh, yes. I am not prepared to download new version of Star Office (using
only dial-up connection).

2) Does anybody know any usefull word processor for Linux using Latin 2
fonts ? (I know about Lyx, but it doesn't work for me.) I was thinking about
Andrew package, but I can't find the type of font option.

Thank you,

Bostjan

Re: How to share files with Win95 or NT

1998-01-29 Thread Gerald V. Livingston lI
This was suggested in another message --- but not clearly.

You say you have a shared WIN95 box with a CD available. I assume
it is on the same side of the firewall as you -- meaning you would
not have to go through your proxy server to *FTP* to that WIN95
machine.

  So, get a FTP daemon for WIN95 (I suggest WAR-FTPD -- 100%free
software) and set that up. Make sure you set yourself up a user
account on the new FTP server that has access to the CD-ROM as one of
its directories. Now use dselect in FTP mode (in house, direct --
not through the proxy server).

Actually, no... it will never get run, even if you create it.
Debian uses SYSV style init, whenere rc.local is from BSD style
init. Slackware uses this. Whatever you need to run, the easiest
is to create a quick script and drop it in the /etc/rc.boot dir

permissions on uucico

I have the following permissions for uucico:

I try to change permissions to allow ordinary users to invoke uucico

I already tried: chmod a+s uucico (I imagined that this way the setuid

It's confusing at first, but if you look at the rc?.d directories, you
will see that all the entries are symlinks to files in /etc/init.d. You
(or dpkg) can add additional entries and create new links with
update-rc.d. For instance, I created /etc/init.d/local for customized
stuff and ran update-rc.d on it and it was then linked to the appropriate
rc?.d location.

If this is something you need to run only once at boot time, it is very
simple.

If you have a directory /etc/rcS.d/ (i.e., a fairly new sysvinit), place a
script in /etc/init.d/ and put a symlink to it in /etc/rcS.d/ like the
others that are there. Set the number to something appropriate. Read
/etc/rcS.d/README for information on this.

If you don't have this directory, place a script in /etc/rc.boot/ . The
scripts there are executed in alphabetical order at boot time.

If someone out there is too the point where they can hit a key on a midi
keyboard and get a sound out, I would love a brief description of how you
did it. Rosegarden seems to promise that sort of behavior, and the web
page even talks about the AWE 64 briefly, but I havn't been able to make
it work.

This sounds like a good idea to me, except that perhaps it would increase
the size of the driver. It is probably bad practice to have a piece of
kernel code automatically looking into the filesystem to load a sound font
as well. If there was a way of circumventing these diffulties I think a
default fount would be a good idea.

Re: X-Windows questions

1998-01-29 Thread Britton

I think you are ust asking too much of your machine :) It is a kind of
multi-tasking linux uses that means you will occasionally (and not
entirely predictably, though doing fewer things at once helps of course)
have halts. It is not a real time system. On the other hand, you can
give priority to important proesses with the 'unice' command and (I think
though I've never used it) an equivelent system call.

I have a Quantum Fireball ST 3.2 GB, which has UDMA capability. The
current version of Linux just ignores the UDMA, and uses plain DMA.
It works fine for me. However, some people have had problems with UDMA
add-on cards, like the Promise controller (apparently used in some
Gateway machines, for example). The solution is to use the mainboard's
on-board controller instead.

BTW, does anyone know when the kernel will have ultra DMA support? I
remember one discussion a while back about kernel hackers not caring about
IDE, but I don't remember any conclusions about which kernel would have
UDMA or when that kernel will likely be released.

Perhaps this is caused by NEdit (in Hamm) being linked with Lesstif
(the free Motif clone). Lesstif is still not fully compatible with
Motif.

Re: fips equivalent for ext2?

1998-01-29 Thread Robert D. Hilliard
I assume you have disk space available, either on another
partition or available to partition. Assuming that the new partition
is to be /dev/hdxn. As root, you should do the following:

 1. fdisk /dev/hdx Use p to see the existing partition
arrangement, then, if it doesn't already exist, use n to create a
partition for /home. This partition does not have to be on the same
drive as the rest of the system.

 2. mkfs.ext2 /dev/hdxn

 3. mount /dev/hdxn /mnt (or any other convenient mount point)

 4. cd /home

 5. cp -a /home /mnt

 6. umount /mnt

 7. mount -t ext2 /dev/hdxn /home (Note that this does not damage
the existing files on /home.)

 8. create an entry in /etc/fstab that will mount this new home
partition on /home.

After testing this setup, and being satisfied that nothing is
missing from the new home directory, you may reclaim the disk space
from your old /home directory as follows:

 1. umount /home

 2. rm -fr /home (This irretrievably destroys all files from the
old /home directory.)

 3. mkdir /home

 4. mount /home

On the binary (yes binary) CD there are kernel-source packages. There
is also a package called kernel package which makes it very easy to
