1998-05-03 Thread hospedales
I did an 'apt-get upgrade', and apt went ahead and removed e2fslibsg in
favour of e2fsprogs without any messages or warnings. So now I have no
e2fslibsg, but everything seems to be fine, what will happen if I have to
reboot?

Thanks,

PS, for the developers: apt-get upgrade is really cool! I suppose people could
just set it up as a weekly or monthly cron job and have machines keep
themselves up todate! :).

I did it using the --force-remove-essential flag to dpkg while
removing. Make sure that you install e2fslibsg before rebooting the

Re: Diety / Apt Questions.

1998-05-03 Thread hospedales
First, thanks alot for everyones help!

I am presuming that you want to run programs that open windows on the
X-display that you have already logged into as a 'normal user', yes?

The 'xhost +localhost' (or any other host that you are using on your
network) is a good solution (probably the best).

IF you are not running multiple X displays on your machine then a
simple technique is to 'su' in an xterm,
 'cp /home/user/.Xauthority /root'
which will then let root open things on your display.

So does root get to keep my user's .Xauthority file permanently then? Or is
.Xauthority periodically generated? (Man -k xauthority and variations thereof
return nothing. :(...) And what does the .Xsession file that someone was
talking about do? (No luck with man and that file either)

SNIP
BTW, unless I am mistaken, you never need to do the 'export DIPLAY'
command unless you are trying to open a display on a display OTHER
than the on that you are using to issue the command.
So if I am logged into a remote computer telnet, could I do xhost
+remotecomputer on mine, and export DISPLAY=myipaddr on remote, and then start
some X program on remote and have it send the display to my Xserver?

thanks,
Timothy

You could. it no longer keeps the files after downloading them though.

 3. If apt retrieves a newer version of a package and stores it as usual in the
archives directory, does it delete the older one? or does that directory grow
 without limit?

In newer versions it deletes all files in the cache after it finishes with

 for mailing lists).

Actually, mutt does real threading. =

Only, mutt opens on /var/spool/mail/user which usually is empty and I
have to do a 'c', '?', select with cursor key to one of the mailboxs
 that actually contain the mail.

For my inbox, a Maildir called INBOX in ~/.folders (which one day I will
change to .mail, but anyway) here's what I have in .muttrc:

set folder=~/.folders # where I keep my mailboxes
set spoolfile='+INBOX' # where my new mail is located

The docs indicate that I should be able to just press the TAB key and
go to mailboxes containing new mail...

The docs lie, press c (I think that's your binding isn't it?) and it'll pop
up the next box with new mail in it. I -WISH- tab worked like that though!

Anyone know what I am missing about this?

set spoolfile above.

Introductory security texts - ssh, tcpd, tripwire?

1998-05-03 Thread David Welton
Hi, I'm looking for a basic document describing how to take some basic
(but important) steps towards securing your computer. Something that
describes to the new user how to use things like tcpd, ssh, tripwire,
and other things to keep their system secure. Something that is not
comprehensive, but that would take the person through some of the more
important things that can make the system reasonably secure, at least
from attackers who are not determined.

This sounds like it would be quite an effort to write myself.. And I'm
not sure I have as much experience as I'd like.. Actually, what would
be perfect is if any of the Italian readers out there avessero
qualcosa del genere da mandarmi, che lo vorrei passare a un'amica:-)

Thanks for any suggestions:-)

Terminal Corruption

1998-05-03 Thread hospedales
Any idea why / how to prevent the text on Virtual Consoles going nuts and being
replaced with lots of funny garbage characters?

This happens to me occasionally if I accidentally cat an executable file. But
today it happened when I mounted an msdos floppy, and tried to do 'ls'. When
this happens the VC it happens on is useless and the characters are only normal
again when I reboot. Even when I type exit (which appears all corrputed of
course), the little pengiun logo on the login screen is all corrupted. :(.

Any ideas? I really hate having to reboot my computer, it reminds me of
windoze!

Thanks!

small bug in Debian 2.0 installation

1998-05-03 Thread Paul Miller

I found a small bug in the Debian 2.0 installation... the installation
program doesn't see the last logical partition..

For example, if I partitioned my drive like:

/dev/hda1
/dev/hda2
/dev/hda5
/dev/hda6
/dev/hda7

I wouldn't be able to install to or access the /dev/hda7 partition from
the installation program.

Subject to the other rules about who may connect to the X server

of course because /usr is readonly, and /var and /etc are machine-specific.

An alternative is to use the nametrans patch for the kernel (I think this
has actually been integrated into the 2.1.x kernel). This lets you nfs mount
server:/ on the clients at their root directory. The few files
(/etc/hostname, /etc/init.d/network, etc) that need to be different for each
computer are given special names, like /etc/init.d/network#HOST=foo#, and the
client named foo will see that file as /etc/init.d/network.

This simplifies administration a lot - you only have to install everything
once and it's visible to all your computers. It also uses only a few extra K
per client.

This sounds nice, but would it support say /etc/init.d#HOST=foo#?
My diskless clients are low end machines (386s, 486s with 8-12mb RAM)
and so I don't want to start up everything I do on the server, for example.

Also, what about /tmp and /var -- those howtos seem to suggest that
each machine should have its own. Mounting all of server:/ seems to
be all read-only or all read-write too. I would prefer /home, /tmp
and /var (the last two being machine specific) to be read-write,
but everything is readonly. Although it's only me using these things
it's better to play safe.

One problem with the way I have it now is that the root is like
server:/tftpboot/client_IP, and without creating a different fstab
for each machine, I can't put the root in the fstab. This seems to upset
the scripts and mount a bit, but it works anyway.

I use the afbackup package (current version 2.11.5-3 for hamm (*)) and the
corresponding client for regular backup. I tried amanda but had
problems storing the dos partition.

afbackup support easy invocation of incremental and full backup, it
uses the backup set (I use 10 tapes) as a virtual gigantic tape and
will write the backup to the end of the current tape and request a new
one.

Description: Client-Server Backup System (Server side)
This is a client-server backup system offering several workstations a
centralized backup to a special backup server. Backing up only one
computer is easily possible, too. Any streaming device can be used
for writing the data to it, usually this will be a tape
device. Writing backups is normally done sequentially: The next
writing to tape goes to the end of the previous write no matter where
you have restored from in the meantime.
   .
Features:
- Authentication of the client is performed before it can take over control
- Access restriction for the streamer device - security
- Client-side per-file compression - reliability
- Data stream is written to tape in pieces - fast finding of files
- Tape position logging for each file
- Tape capacity is fully used
- Full / incremental backups
- Raw partitions can be backuped
- Client and Server buffering for maximal throughput is done
   .
Note: Tk is required if you want to use the graphical configuration
tool instead of the text configuration tool.

If I rebuild the whole machine (e.g., replacement of a hard disc and
repartioning everything) I use tar to make a complete backup.
Fortunatly, the last backup was just 2.6 GB and fitted on my 90m DDS2
tape (with hardware compression).

(*) I suggest not to use a version prior this, as a lot of things have
changed (location of backup infos, file names, manpages). On a BO
system fetch the debian source and compile it by yourself.

I was brought to debian by 2 things. One was the package system/upgrade
handling, but the other was that at the time I was looking Debian was
the only release with full elf.

Is debian now trailing the stae of the art (libc6) instead of leading?
Shouldn't more effort be being put on fixing thes bugs, and not on
geting the developers still furthe away from the users?

Actually there is support for Intense 3D Voodoo. Where have you been? :)

The latest XF86_SVGA server has support for the AT25/AT3D chipset which is
on Voodoo Rush cards. I have the exact same card you have and it works
fine. If you can, install the XF86 3.3.2 Debian hamm packages.
Otherwise, you will have to do a manual install of the Linux_ix86

There was an effort to port the Glide libraries to Linux but I don't if
the Rush supporting version ever was. So, you may be stuck with 2D only,
which really isn't so bad. :)

important things that can make the system reasonably secure, at least

We don't want Debian 2.0 to be yet another Red-Hat 5.0.

We don't know for sure when it will be released, but we know that it
should be bug-free enough before it will be released.

I keep seeing messages abut bugs that *must* be fixed, yet I notice the

When hamm was frozen, slink becomed the new unstable, so new packages
should in general go there and that's why slink is now growing. This does
not mean bug in hamm are not being fixed at the same time.

I was brought to debian by 2 things. One was the package system/upgrade

the only release with full elf.

Debian 2.0 not only will be full libc6 but also libc5-compatible. This
means that you will be able not only to run old libc5 apps but also
*compile* them by using the -altdev packages.

Glide exists for Linux for Voodoo1 cards only, though there is a detection

it works fine.

Daryl Strauss is the official maintainer of Glide for Linux and he has
been working very hard to add Rush support. He's had to modify the rush

Imagine, the card has a 3dfx Voodoo Rush chipset for 3D plus an Alliance
AT25 chipset for 2D. The 3D chipset does the rendering seaparately and
blits the rendered image of a bridge to the 2D chipset. This is a lot
trickier that the combo 2d/3d chipsets that are out there.

Anyway, he still has some issues that are giving him a problem so he was
flying out to 3dfx (on his own dime) to meet with a 3dfx engineer to solve

BTW, full Voodoo2 support already works, he's just waiting for approval

What is the real story with debian 2.0? IE when ill it be released? I
have a 1.2 system that I want to upgrade, but I need it to be
dependable, so I am waiting for the final release.

From what you just said, you question would better be worded: When will
2.x be reasonably stable for a non-experimental user? As a non-developer,
let me give you my best estimate:

Never. History will probably repeat itself and the project will
go even further away from this planet. Rather than focus on building a
2.0.x release that kicks ass, they will concentrate on playing with new
toys.

I keep seeing messages abut bugs that *must* be fixed, yet I notice the
next genertaion of Debian slink continues to grow on the ftp site.

And the changes are too frequent for ordinary people to keep up
with it. I am concerned that they could lose full mirror sites. You have
to consider the load on a mirror site could be unacceptable. Check out
some of the mirrors and see if they are complete and up to date. I did
this a while back and was not pleased at all.

I was brought to debian by 2 things. One was the package system/upgrade
handling, but the other was that at the time I was looking Debian was
the only release with full elf.

Same here, but I have resorted to only using dpkg. Dselect is needing some
updates. One of the major needs is the ability to span multiple volumes.
Suppose, I have a CD with main and contrib, another with non-free,
another with non-us, and a zip disk with local packages. To make it more
interesting suppose someone else gives me a CD or zip disk with updates
only to all the above sections. If I had enough CD and zip drives to mount
all these volumes, I could create a debian directory with a few files and
symlinks to the mounted volumes. But most of us don't have the available
hardware for such workarounds. To make it even worse, hamm is so big that
you can't make an i386 CD with install, main, and contrib. How does this
affect the expected release date of an _acceptable_ 2.0 ?

Is debian now trailing the stae of the art (libc6) instead of leading?
Shouldn't more effort be being put on fixing thes bugs, and not on
geting the developers still furthe away from the users?

Remember the 'Debian rides the space shuttle' news releases? They referred
to the software being used in space. Maybe the upcoming news will be that
the project itself is lost in outer space.

Then there is the matter of this list. It doesn't seem oriented towards
users of stable. Bo users deserve highest priority for debian to be
recognized as valid alternative to other distributions. People who
want/need to use anything from unstable should discuss it on other
existing lists or a new one (debian-chat) that should be created. If so
many users cannot get by with what is available in stable, it is time to
put the stuff in bo-updates and bo-unstable along with some additional
goodies into bo (debian 1.4).

I thought this was going to be a distribution that easily upgraded in
place? It is for people like me who know how to download upstream source
and build it, but what about the others? I would like to encourage others
to use this distribution, but that usually means I will have to do too
much work installing, configuring, and maintaining their system.

Regards,
Another Debian Orphan

 Hi,

Thanks to all for the quick answer. The

 $ emacs -batch -q -no-site-file -f batch-byte-compile source-file(s)

is what I've wanted. But this leads me to another question: now, as
a 'system adminstrator of my own PC, I just wonder which is the
right way to add files to emacs and to make them available to those
who are working on my computer. For instance, I want to add the JDE
and don't know exactly were to put it and how to make it system
 available.

Every Emacs has a site-lisp directory. On a Debian system it's
normally /usr/local/lib/emacs/site-lisp or
/usr/local/share/emacs/site-lisp. Examine the variable load-path
within your newly created emacs and look for site-lisp components.
Just put your lisp file there and byte-compile it.

For bigger packages I suggest creating a subdirectory there, put all
the files into that directory, and create a file called
package-init.el which contains something like this:

(setq load-path (cons /usr/local/share/emacs/site-lisp/package load-path))
(require 'whatever might be neccessary to load your package)
(provide 'package-init)

The ...-things are to be replaced.

Hi,
Does your chatscript contain noauth ? The hamm pppd package
has auth enabled in the default /etc/ppp/options file, and for most
ISPs it must be disabled either in the options file or in the
chatscript. Does your ISP use PAP? If so look at
/usr/doc/ppp/README.debian.gz for guidance.

The easiest way to get ppp working is to get the package
pppconfig. It is in the hamm/hamm/binary-all/admin/ directory on the
mirrors, as pppconfig_*.deb. Of course, it won't be easy to download
it if you can't get connected to the net. :-(

I feel that the effort that is being made to make hamm actually stable

telling me the cache size and clock speed. if i try to do it with my boot
disk, it works for a while, then alerts me to a kernel panic (unable to
mount root fs on 03:05).

i think i may need to enter some option(s) at the boot: prompt on the
rescue disk, but i don't know what the options are or how to find them.
anyone know how i can get anything working?
plase? :)

aaron.

Incoming telnet attempts during leafnode/fetch nntp connections

1998-05-03 Thread Jack Kern
During leafnode's fetch nntp connections there have been attempts
(unsuccessful) to telnet into my machine. My machine dials in to an
isp using pppd (dynamic address allocation) and ip-up: runq,
getpop3, fetch and disconnects. Sometimes fetch stays connected
for as much as 1 hour and more.

Newserver is 142.77.1.190, nntp.uunet.ca; I am connecting using
news.klis.com. /etc/hosts.deny is ALL: PARANOID; /etc/hosts.allow
is null.

The latest attempt was logged as from 1Cust43.tnt2.tco2.da.uu.net. A
part of another machine name was alvirus.

I don't know if I should pay any attention to this.

Will boot from floppy but not from hard disk

1998-05-03 Thread Hans Ehrbar

I installed bo on my old 486, and the installation was
completely smooth, but I can only boot from the floppy, not
from the hard disk. This is the second time that I tried to
install it, in my earlier attempt I could not boot from the
hard disk either. I suspect the problem may be due to the
BIOS settings: a copy is attached here, they are all the
default settings except the setting for the Hard Disk type
47 RAM Area which has to be DOS 1KB according to a remark
buried somewhere in the LILO documentation. Any suggestions
what I should do? Your help is appreciated.
