Boot Messages
I'm sure this is a FAQ, but I seem to have lost my start-up messages since upgrading to hamm. Everything used to go into /var/log/*, and my /etc/syslog.conf hasn't changed, but I don't seem to have much in /var/log any more. Anyone know where it goes now, or what's changed, or how to scroll the console back? Otherwise, the upgrade to hamm was pretty hassle free. Couple of problems I had though were: I had to recompile the kernel to get my psaux mouse back before xdm would start X properly again, as the upgrade booted a newly installed kernel rather than my existing 3.0.33 kernel. I installed kernel headers for 3.0.32 as something depended on this package, although I already had kernel sources fo 3.0.33 as I needed this before the upgrade to drive my ISDN card. Dselect wanted the new kernel source and image packages though, and they installed fine, although the installation scripts set the /usr/src/linux link to kernel-headers.3.0.32. I had to re-edit all the config files to get my afterstep settings back. This was fine after I found the new config files (the setup doesn't copy them all to each user's directory). My ISP connection from linux doesn't work anymore (that's why I'm posting from Windoze). I have edited all the configuration files under /etc/isdn and removed my old rc.connect from /etc/init.d, but what do I do to actually bring the connection up? Sorry for all the supplementary questions, but thanks in advance for any suggestions, and there's plenty of cool new stuff in hamm to make it worthwhile. Just fire up and tap enter a few times. It is usually a good idea to upgrade dpkg first with dpkg, in case there have been enhancements of the package system. for an upgrade from bo/rexx/buzz to hamm, DO NOT attempt to upgrade with dpkg. Doing so will break bash, resulting in a non-working system...recovering from this situation is difficult for an expert and probably impossible for a novice. DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME. Use the HOWTO, or use autoup.sh which a) upgrades bash and libreadline and other stuff in the correct order, and b) upgrades dpkg to the latest version. my preferred method for upgrading to hamm is: 1. download autoup.sh and the tarball from http://debian.vicnet.net.au/autoup 2. read autoup.sh to get an understanding of what it is about to do. also read Scott's HOWTO. 3. run autoup.sh 4. when autoup has run, THEN (and only then) is it safe to run dselect to complete the upgrade. Use the 'mountable' method if you have a CD or a local mirror - it works better than the old 'mounted' method. Alternatively, use apt (but you'll need to install apt and several other packages by hand first) as mentioned yesterday, i have used this method to successfully (and painlessly) upgrade dozens of systems to hamm. it works. craig -- craig sanders -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. Thanx It is a bit confusing, isn't it. Here's the situation under Debian: If you start X with startx, then: first it tries to do the stuff in your .xinitrc; if you don't have one, it goes and invokes the system xinitrc, which on Debian goes and does what happens when you use xdm to start X. If you start X with xdm (the graphical login screen): It does the stuff in the system-wide Xsession. On Debian, this does nice things like suck in your ~/.Xresources file if you have one and then if you have your own ~/.xsession, goes and does that - if you don't have your own ~/.xsession, it tries to start an xterm and whatever you have set up as the default window manager for your system. The combined moral of this on Debian is: A ~/.xinitrc is pointless - if you put all your customizations into ~/.xsession and delete your ~/.xinitrc then you'll get the same environment no matter how you start X, and when using startx you'll get all the nice standard startup things from the system-wide Xsession. It's really the better way to go. Also how do i load the modules for fvwm2? they won't load for me with an error message saying that they should be called from inside fvwm (i tried t load them from inside fvwm2 but it didn't work) And how do i set a back groung pix under fvwm2 and afterstep (can it be jpeg?) The error message means to say that the modules should be called directly by fvwm2, (e.g. through a menu item or in a startup file). The easiest way is to install the menu package and then use the menus that appear when you click on the left button in the root window. (the root window is what is known to the rest of the world as the background - also note that you'll have to exit fvwm2 after installing menu) If you want to invoke a certain module with command line arguments, then you might try using the FvwmTalk module - this lets you send commands to fvwm2 as though it were reading them from a startup file. Also, if you've been getting non-Debian advice on configuring your system, someone may have told you to create a ~/.fvwm2rc file. Resist the temptation. Debian has a much better way to configure fvwm2 - read the /usr/doc/fvwm2/README.sysrc.gz for details. (Basically, create a directory ~/.fvwm2 and then put anything you want to add to the default setup into ~/.fvwm2/post.hook and all will be well) Finally, a background picture is easy with the Debian fvwm2 setup (I don't know about afterstep myself) - just put your background image into ~/.fvwm2/background.jpg. Or, to automatically size your picture to fit your screen, you can abuse the program that chooses background images and put the single line: -fullscreen /path/to/my/background.jpg into the file ~/.fvwm2/background.list - note that a ~/.fvwm2/background.jpg file takes precedence over a background.list file. You can add more lines to the background.list file to have it choose a random one each time you start X. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? I am running bo and I am have troubling compiling with gcc/g++. The compiler does not find the prepocessor directive header files ie iostream etc unless I include a switch -B (or is it -L) with the path to my header and library files included. Then I've set some symlinks in /usr/local/bin: scilab - /usr/local/scilab-2.3/bin/scilab intersci - /usr/local/scilab-2.3/bin/intersci BEpsf - /usr/local/scilab-2.3/bin/BEpsf In this way I've got a newer version of Scilab, and everything works fine. palmpilot III and ibm thinkpad 760xl
so my parents gave me a palmpilot III for my birthday (which was nice). However, I can't get it to work with my thinkpad. here's what I have debian 1.3.1 pilot-link 8.9 a palmpilot III here's what I did compiled pilot-link 8.9, no real problems installed pilot-link stuff, no real problems tried to get it to communicate with my palmpilot via pilot-xfer /dev/ttyS0 -l with no luck, palmpilot can't find my computer. But this is not a surprise really because gpm is using /dev/ttyS0. so I mv'd the gpm script in /etc/init.d/ to gpm.bak and ran update-rc.d gpm remove and rebooted. 0setserial configured /dev/ttyS0 to the following uart 16550A port 0x03f8 irq 4 which is what the thinkpad documentation says is one of the possible resource defaults for the serial port. still no go _and_ my xserver starts going weird (race conditions or something causing it to die) and my pcmcia cardmanager fails to correctly set up the serial connection for my modem card. so bag that and reinstall gpm and everything is okay. I don't know why my system seems dependent on gpm; I've never used it (and I thought that I read in this list that it wasn't really necessary). so I tried using /dev/ttyS1 but my modem is using that one out, so I pop my modem out and thought that would release the serial connection, but no pilot-xfer says it can't make a connection to port ttyS1. specifically it says unable to bind to port '/dev/ttyS1' so I tried doing setserial setserial /dev/ttyS2 uart 16550A irq 4 port 0x03e8 setserial /dev/ttyS3 uart 16550A irq 3 port 0x02e8 but setserial won't actually set the serial connections (yes, I ran the command as root). so why is that and where do I go from here? And in either case, same response from pilot-xfer. so the specks for the serial port in the back of the thinkpad are irq 4 port 0x03f8 30x02f8 40x03e8 30x02e8 the standard com 1-4 stuff. I'd really like to use this pda with linux so any help would be greatly appreciated. Re: gcc not finding header / library files
Hi. I asked this question once before. Unfortunately I did not phrase the question properly so the answer I got was helpful but not useful. Here goes again. I am running bo and I am have troubling compiling with gcc/g++. The compiler does not find the prepocessor directive header files ie iostream etc unless I include a switch -B (or is it -L) with the path to my header and library files included. Apparently I can set a enviornment variable so I won't have to do this all the time. Who would I go about doing this? Is there another way? It's a -I switch for header files, and -L for libraries. If properly installed, g++ should find the C++ header files by default. Are you aware that you should use `g++' and not `gcc' ? HTH, Eric -- E.L. To enable support for it, recompile your kernel with SCSI support (yes, even if you haven't any SCSI adapter), SCSI disk support, and for the adaptor, choose Iomega PPA driver. Regarding the ZIP Plus, a driver have just been developed by Dave Campbell. See the following URL : http://www.torque.net/~campbell/ (file is imm.tar.gz) Beware : the code is in Alpha stage, but seems quite usable and stable enough (I'm using it - rarely - without problem). Also please note that ZIP+ only needs a special driver to be used in parallel mode ; if you've got a SCSI board, you don't have a problem. If you need documentation, go to the LDP (on sunsite), in the unmaintained/mini section, there is a ZIP-Drive.txt (it somewhat old : 01/96 but still worth reading). I'm also in the business of publishing a updated version of the stuff, transformed in a full-blown sgml howto, but in the early draft stage as yet. Don't wait for it. Hope this helps. Ph. It works okay, I've never encountered this 1024 thing with either Linux or FreeBSD. But I don't know much about BSD and haven't really had much luck/time with it. I never had this problem with MacBSD. I can install FreeBSD, no problem (there's a couple of oddities about sequence, such as happened if you had mildly non-conforming software in debian 1.1, or tried to use images on the hard-disk in 1.3, as well as not starting up the network in time to use ftp sites other than the primary). And it runs, including X, at the same time. But then I can't restart without faking an install . . . Particularly, ftp--there's stuff I used in it, like page, that GNU doesn't have. Download speed
Hi all Have installed a BOCA 56K Internet Modem. When downloading from Win95 i normally get a speed of 4.5-5.2 Kb/s but with Linux (hamm) only 2.5-3.0 Kb/s. When running Win95 the RD led is glowing almost all the time. With Linux the led is often blinking and is black for longer periods 10 sec. Recording the download in 2 sec intervall indicates max speeds of upp to 5.0 Kb/s even with Linux. As I understand it is the breaks during downloading that givs a low overall fi- gure. Is it my computer, the line or the ftp that causes the breaks. The line, ftp and the file are the same and the diff in time is ~ 10 - 15 min which I assume have a minor influence sinc tests have bin done several times always with the same result. Remains the difference i OS. I assume that this can bee fixed som way or another but dont know how. Does anybody know how to fix this or where to find articles about modems in combination whith Linux and Internet? Re: AFIO usage...
Jay, I just picked up a package called KBackup and it uses AFIO. I had never heard of AFIO until I installed KBackup. I is somewhat like Taper, but a lot more in depth. It will allow you to define INCLUDES and EXCLUDES in the configuration. Very simple to set up and real easy to install. It uses scripts to accomplish the manupliation of AFIO and all the other programs it needs. You can get a copy of the source at http://www.phy.hw.ac.uk/~karsten/KBackup/. Upgrading is not as easy as just updating a couple of packages, because you are upgrading your whole system at once. Nevertheless, it can be done safely and while running multi-user (no rebooting with a rescue floppy or *shudder* repartitioning your disks), if you do it the right way. Look for the upgrade-HOWTO or wait a few days for the official Hamm beta to be announced. The announcement will have pointers to upgrade documentation. re: palmpilot III and ibm thinkpad 760xl
I just got a Palm Pilot Professional two days ago. Last night I got pilot-link running, no problems whatsoever, hardly read the README. Managed to install some drawing programs, and the getrom program, and downloaded my ROM, and got the xcopilot emulator running. Now I use it to test programs before I install them. I never even bothered to boot down to NT or 95 to try the CDROM that came with the Pilot. I compiled all the tools. I use Debian 2.0. I have a PS/2 mouse, and don't have a modem, so my serial ports are free. The README suggested to cd /dev ; ln ttyS0 pilot to create a /dev/pilot device for convenience. I found pilot-xfer was looking for /dev/pilot even when I specified the serial port. That is, it was ignoring that command line option. So do that and try pilot-xfer -l.
