Re: Los tcp wrappers [Solución]

1998-09-13 Thread J . Parera
Hola,
[ Me acabo de convencer... ¡KMail es basura! ¡¿text/x-java?! ]

Para Xs cual me recomiendas?

 Estruch:/home/josep# tcpdchk

[~/doc]$ grep nntp /etc/inetd.conf
nntpstream tcp nowait news/usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/sbin/leafnode
[~/doc]$

[~/doc]$ cat /etc/hosts.allow
leafnode: estruch
[~/doc]$

[~/doc]$ cat /etc/hosts.deny
ALL: PARANOID
leafnode: ALL
[~/doc]$

Estruch:/home/josep# fetch -vv
1.4: verbosity level is 2
Connecting to news.teleline.es ...
LIST ACTIVE done only 94 seconds ago, skipping
Estruch:/home/josep#

bastante regular...

Having had Win98 and Linux installed on the same disk drive and Win95 and
Linux before that, I feel pretty confident that it works the same in
either case. Once you have isolated Win9x on its own partition, Linux can
pretty much ignore it - except to filch its files if needed.

Have you looked into cpio? CPIO is much more reliable especially if
there are back areas on the tape. You may want to use this if are
going to be doing regular backups. Also I do not think tar will
backup special device files such as the ones in /dev. If you use tar
you do not want to just specify /. You most likely want to exclude
/dev, /proc and maybe /tmp. If you have any nfs mounted drives you
may want to exclude them also.

Re: Failure to recompile a system library (pthreads) under Debian 2.0

1998-09-13 Thread Martin Weinberg

Thanks for the responses! The hint that the glibc2 distribution contained
linuxthreads was what I was missing.

What I did is change SIGUSR1 to SIGUNUSED and SIGUSR2 to SIGSTKFLT in
internals.h in the linuxthreads directory and recompile (this was
based on a suggestion from [EMAIL PROTECTED] who pointed out
that LAM/MPI used SIGUSR1).

I recompiled the library from source and successfully compile and ran
the checks. I then replaced the libpthread.* libraries in the hamm
distribution.

After recompiling LAM with D_REENTRANT, all seems well and MPI now
works together with POSIX threads. I need this so that I can take
advantage of SMP on dual boxes in our network (Beowulf) cluster.

Regarding your message dated: Sat, 12 Sep 1998 21:06:24 +0300

Besides pthread library is included with glibc2.0. It is a part of
it. You need to get a glibc2.0.x latest stable version and make required
modifications and compile. But it might broke some other programs ... My
guess. ( i.e. you want redefine signals ??? )
Oops. I was in hurry .. half read letter. Sorry for wasted

anymore
use /dev/ttyS1 (e.g. for reconnecting ppp).

Any attempt to touch the device will hand, like

If I shut down ppp properly then I have no problem reusing the device.

/tmp permissions

1998-09-13 Thread Nuno Carvalho
Hi,

I'de some questions about /tmp directory:

 My /tmp directory permissions are:

 rwxrwxrwt 2 root root 1024 Sep 13 14:17 tmp

... meanwhile chmod manual says that t permission is to: save program
text on swap device !

What this means !? /tmp directory isn't on any swap device !

 It's a good policy for /tmp directory to have 777 permissions !?
With such permissions any user could write on that directory until even
there's no more space on device, rigth !?

 Thanks.

Smail and local machines

1998-09-13 Thread apaulh
Hello,
I am having trouble getting smail to deliver
mail between my local machines. I have a private
network setup with a debian box running as the
news and mail server.

What I am unable to do is get the debian box (daffy)
to send mail to another box (tweety). The /etc/hosts
file has the correct ip# and names for all my local
machines, but smail tries to do a dns lookup on tweety
and when it cannot find one it sends the mail to
the smart host, my ISP.

How can I get smail to use the /etc/hosts file before
trying to do a dns lookup?

I know that sendmail will do this, but smail is already
up and running and up until know I have had no trouble
with it.

Thanks
A. Paul

That's exactly what it is for (not writing till the disk is full though)
- it is a place where any user can write files - most commonly used by
programs for temporary space or some sort of lock file. It it generally
up to the administrator to clean up /tmp (Debian empties it on reboot,

There are many meanings for the t permission (usually referred to as the
sticky bit). Originally the sticky bit was applied to frequently run
programs so theyt would always be hanging around in memory (or at least
in swap).

However, setting the sticky bit on a directory means that only the owner
of a file within that directory may delete it. This solves a thorny
issue with /tmp: the directory must be world writable in order for all
users to write files in it, but write permissions on a directory allow
any user to delete any file, regardless of the file's permissions.
Therefore the sticky bit, when applied to a directory, was interpreted
as a special case. Now any user may create a file im /tmp and have
reasonable assurance that another user will not be able to delete it.
(There are still some exploit problems with /tmp, however).

Any decent UNIX book will have a better explanation of this.

: What this means !? /tmp directory isn't on any swap device !
 :
 : It's a good policy for /tmp directory to have 777 permissions !?
: With such permissions any user could write on that directory until even
: there's no more space on device, rigth !?

Well, if you're worried about that, put /tmp on its own filesystem and
implement quotas. Most of my multiuser systems have many filesystems,
with different quotas in place:

brahe:~ $ cat /etc/fstab
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# file system mount point type options dump
pass
/dev/sda1 / ext2defaults,errors=remount-ro 0
1
/dev/sdb7 none swap sw,pri=1
/dev/sdb8 none swap sw,pri=1
proc/proc procdefaults
/dev/sda4 /usr ext2 defaults 0 2
/dev/sdb2 /home ext2 defaults,nodev,noexec,nosuid,usrquota 0 2
/dev/sda3 /var ext2 defaults 0 2
/dev/sdb3 /tmp ext2 defaults,usrquota=/var/state/quotas/tmp.quota 0 2
/dev/sda5 /var/log ext2 defaults 0 2
/dev/sdb5 /var/tmp ext2 defaults,usrquota=/var/state/quotas/vtmp.quota 0
2
/dev/sda6 /var/spool/mail ext2
defaults,usrquota=/var/state/quotas/mail.quota 0 2
/dev/sdb6 /var/spool/mqueue ext2 defaults 0 2
/dev/sda7 /var/spool/pop ext2
defaults,usrquota=/var/state/quotas/pop.quota 0 2

Some lines are broken, but you get the idea.

A typical user's quota looks like this:

brahe:~ $ sudo edquota webgod
Quotas for user webgod:
/dev/sdb2: blocks in use: 3529, limits (soft = 5120, hard = 7680)
inodes in use: 206, limits (soft = 1280, hard = 1920)
/dev/sdb3: blocks in use: 0, limits (soft = 49152, hard = 49152)
inodes in use: 0, limits (soft = 12288, hard = 12288)
/dev/sdb5: blocks in use: 0, limits (soft = 49152, hard = 49152)
inodes in use: 0, limits (soft = 12288, hard = 12288)
/dev/sda6: blocks in use: 0, limits (soft = 10240, hard = 15360)
inodes in use: 1, limits (soft = 5, hard = 5)
/dev/sda7: blocks in use: 0, limits (soft = 25600, hard = 25600)
inodes in use: 0, limits (soft = 5, hard = 5)

Our users get 5 MB home dirs, 10 MB mail spools, and at least three of
them have to collaborate to fill /tmp or /var/tmp (each filesystem is
128 MB). This makes it easier to kick idiots off the system.

Aileen Frisch's excellent O'Reilly book does a good job explaining all
this stuff, and many other aspects of UNIX administration.

Lo,

Though the DSELECT program is easier than most linux installation

if it just aint possible to write something decent on this matter.
All of the linux distributions fail on two points and so does DEBIAN.

1. Easy of use and installation (though now i mind less after 2 weeks of
getting grips labour)
2. D O C U M E N T A T I O N ( why all these cryptic files and no real
database ??? HTML yes?)

Installing and removing LOOKS easy but there's very little REAL
version/dependency checking done.
Geez, sometimes i start thinking of winDOWs as a better platform just
because one can up a system
doing simple installation procedures. HELP i'm no
hacker/coder/programmer/techie just an experienced user
of operating systems doswinlix and NOT even considering to become one.
REALLY leave the coding to the
guys/girls who know what they're doing i think to myself. But all i see
is NEW kernel releases and NOT
new USER friendly add-ons such as installation, configuration, manual
database, manuals with more indepth
information on exactly what files to alter etc . . .

To set the record straight, I REALLY LIKE DEBIAN LINUX and the other
LINUX Distributions, i just think
it's disturbing to 'allready' see flaws in development. My thoughts on
this are 'of course' not complete or even
accurate but should indicate, again the need for a Standard User
Friendly environment to people leaving the
winDOWs platform or choosing to widen their horizon.

Finally, why not deliver a good WORDprocessor on the distribution /
contribution CDR ?
It's considered a Major lack in any distribution.

Thank You for you patience while reading this.

There is a real database. It's called PostgreSQL and comes as a
set of *ponder* five packages, or so.

Wrt documentation, please install the dwww package and you should
be able to browse through all installled documentation, including
manpages, html files, info files, special files etc.

Installing and removing LOOKS easy but there's very little REAL
 version/dependency checking done.

Are you joking? very little dependency checking? You should install
Debian and not another distribution... Debian is famous for it's very
good dependency checking.

If you occur problems with packages whose dependencies are not
fulfilled even with Debian please report it as bug against this
very package. Please see the instruction for reporting bugs at:
http://www.infodrom.north.de/Debian/Bugs/Reporting.html

Geez, sometimes i start thinking of winDOWs as a better platform just

REALLY leave the coding to the

is NEW kernel releases and NOT
new USER friendly add-ons such as installation, configuration, manual
 database, manuals with more indepth
information on exactly what files to alter etc . . .

Reality check! Please put on your glasses and look again.

Debian 2.0 comes with a completely rewritten and improved installation
procedure. It's now a lot more user friendly than before.

All Debian packages are pre-configured after installation. Only 30%
of all packages do need manual attention during installation. The
packages only bother the user if it is really needed and install themself
without user interaction if they can.

Wrt user friendly add-ons that you don't see, what's about the consistant
kbd configuration? All keys have the same meaning, on the console, via
rlogin/ssh/rsh/etc, within X11. What's about the consistant menu structure?
All installed X11-capable packages are present in the menu of *every*
window manager. What about the large amount of window managers that
are avaailable for Debian? You'll find both fvwm2, fvwm95, window-maker,
*twm, openlook, if you include not free stuff you'll even get KDE and
if you're including the upcoming 2.1 release you'll even get Gnome. What
about automatically done dependence checking during installation? You
cannot install packages that don't work because it depends on some other
packges which are not installed. Is this all not user-friendly? In that
case I don't know what you want.

To set the record straight, I REALLY LIKE DEBIAN LINUX and the other
 LINUX Distributions, i just think
it's disturbing to 'allready' see flaws in development. My thoughts on

Interpreting flaws as different development, this is how free software
works. Somebody is not satisfied by a piece of software or documentation
and starts a new project. This is how Linux works.

Finally, why not deliver a good WORDprocessor on the distribution /

There is LaTeX. This is the only free one. However it is not a
wordprocessor but a type setting system. If you want to have a
wordprocessor you shall start a new project or help other projects
that are working on this issue. I'm sorry but I forgot the names
but I believe there is a free wordprocessing program in development.

There are also some not free packages that could fit your needs: LyX,
kLyX, StarOffice 3.1, 4.0 and 5.0, WordPerfect, some more, I'm sure.

It's considered a Major lack in any distribution.

Maybe it's a major lack in the whole community that there are only
not free wordprocessors? I have to admit that I don't need such
programs since I'm able to use the power of LaTeX.

Can i use Lib5 and lib6 together?

1998-09-13 Thread Wolfgang . Fuehrer
Hi,
i-m using Debian 1.3.1 and Libc 5. This is ok because StarOffice 4.0 SP3 i want
to use need this version.
Now i get KDE 1.0 from Hamm i want to install. This needs QT 1.33 but QT 1.33
needs Lib6.
Is it possible to install both (Lib5 / Lib6) so that they can work together?

Thanks

I'm sure the is another way but you can install a special
pathalias router for your local machines. To do this put the
following router *before* any internet router in /etc/smail/routers

# paths - route using a paths file, like that produced by the pathalias program
#
# SMTP mail routing - local machines that can receive Mail
#
paths.smtp:
driver=pathalias,   # general-use paths router
always,
transport=smtp; # for matches, deliver over SMTP

file=maps/smtp, # sorted file containing path info
proto=lsearch,  # use a linear search
optional, # ignore if the file does not exist
-required, # no required domains

After that put the following into your /etc/smail/maps/smtp file:

tweety tweety.domain!%s
tweety.domain tweety.domain!%s
daffy daffy.domain!%s
daffy.domaindaffy.domain!%s

To test if this setup works try the following command

/usr/sbin/smail -d10 -bv [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: Debian DSELECT

1998-09-13 Thread Greg Vence
You going to hear that most of the things you've suggested are being
address or 'in the works.' The reason for this is that Debian Linux
are from the Unix background.

1) Supported by volunteers. The volunteers are usually building stuff
they find useful and donate it back to the public.

2) These volunteers have been in a highly technical environment. You'll
see solutions there first. Unix was used for 'big' machines. Now that
it is being used more on a desktop level, you'll see more 'hold your
hand' or 'management' type software come available. First priority is a
solid secure machine. Many Linux boxes are servers or otherwise
publicly available machines.

In my experiance Debian is far superior to anything Micro$oft has put

It is also in the works. Actually, it is compatibility amongst the

Interesting, M$, MacOS, OS/2(is it really major) don't seem to have one
included in the OS. If you want one, you've got to pay for it. Now if
you want a text editor, Debian comes with several. Infact, we have
spelling checkers for several languages. Do they?

If you want suite software, you have a choice of at least three for
Linux.

I have a Diamond Viper V330 card which is supported in the SVGA server and

My situation is similar, but on much more modest hardware. I'm
installing to an old ThinkPad 701CS with 1024K video.

I've noticed that I had to create my own symlinks from
/usr/X11R6/bin/X - /etc/X11/X and from /etc/X11/X -
/usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_SVGA. That was a little unusual I thought (having
to create them, I mean). I also thought it was weird that the error
would say no screens found when the XF86config clearly has them.

I did try other XF86config files just for fun, and I wonder if the
syntax hasn't changed from XFree 3.3.2 to 3.3.3. The error with the
3.3.2 config says it can't find an accel display configured, even
though there is an Accel configured beautifully. I'm wondering if
one of the following scenarios explains our problems:

a) There's a new XF86Config syntax that XF86Setup doesn't fully know
about.

b) Something has changed from 3.3.2 to 3.3.3 such that symlinks don't
get created properly or aren't used similarly, and such that
configuration of the new version is different (trickier) than
configuration of the old version.

c) There's something really basic one or both of us overlooked because
of a 2:00am brainfart that clouded our vision. Hopefully someone
smart will chime in and elucidate the error of our way?

Luck and fortune to us both! :-)

Q: Why Midhight Commander stopped working on text console?

1998-09-13 Thread Oleksiy \(alex\) Bolgarov
Hi!

Who can tell my why my Midnight Commander stoped working
on text console?

When I type 'mc', screen goes blank and after couple of
seconds only one character appears, in upper right corner
of screen - usually it is '|', but sometimes it is '/'.

When I'm starting Midnight Commander from under X11 (from various
flavours of xterm), it works OK.

I'm using Debian 2.0, but have upgraded a lot of packages from
unstable distribution. Actually, I had upgraded Midnight
Commander itself from unstable distribution, but that did not
help.

It seems that AOL is silently rejecting my emails that I send to users
of the service. My setup is hamm with exim sending over a dial-up
dynamic address to smarthost via smtp. I have header rewrite rules set
to change the outgoing headers to correspond to that of the smarthost
but I think I am missing something. I would guess AOL is rejecting it
like spam that has bogus headers. My local machine name is
brian.servis.snet which of course is a fake name. I have noticed in
mails to this list that the Message-ID header is not being
re-written(is it supposed to?), i.e. it still shows something like
Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

My rewrite section of exim.conf is

 bcc: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
reply-to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I didn't select to rewrite all headers because I want the inbound

I can send my exim.conf if that is needed. I set it up using eximconfig
and selecting option 2.

/var/log/ppp.log file the error is:

ppp[729] peer refused to authenticate

My pap-secrets, chatscript, and dial script are all the same as on the
Debian 1.3 box. Is there more files that I have forgotten about.

It's also possible you used xbase 3.3.2.2-1 at some point, modified
/etc/X11/Xresources, and then said no to letting dpkg replace that file in
  later upgrades.

You should have the following in your /etc/X11/Xresources file:
  *VT100.Translations: #override KeyBackSpace: string(\177)\n\
 KeyDelete: string(\033[3~)\n\
 KeyHome: string(\033OH)\n\

I've got 3.3.2.2-4 and this in /etc/Xresources (no Xresources.dpkg* files
 there BTW):

 *VT100.Translations: #override KeyDelete: string(\033[3~)\n\
KeyHome: string(\033OH)\n\
KeyEnd: string(\033OF)

FWIW, I'm using 3.3.2.3a-1, here is my Xresources.dpkg-dist:

! /etc/X11/Xresources
!
! global Xresources file -- used by both xdm and xinit (startx)

! Fix Motif client handling of backspace/delete; this is not supposed to

! *XmText.translations: #override\n\
!   KeyosfDelete: delete-previous-character()
! *XmTextField.translations: #override\n\

! Fix Xaw (Athena widget set) programs to understand the delete key
*Text.translations: #override ~Shift ~Meta KeyDelete:
delete-next-character()

! Uncomment the following lines to make xterm appear much like a virtual
! console, so that ANSI colors will make more sense.
! XTerm*background: black
! XTerm*foreground: gray90

! Make XTerm use Debian's customized terminfo entry.
XTerm*termName: xterm-debian

! Make the backspace key generate ^? instead of ^H, per Debian keyboard
policy.
*VT100*backarrowKey: false

There are manpages, which are often quite good help if all you need is a
summary and a reminder of what things do. From all the Linux distributions,
Debian has the best man-db setup.

There are the GNU Info files. There are numerous documents written in
postscript, there are the books from O'Reilly and you have the Debian
documentation project.

One of the strong points of a Linux based system is that there is so much
documentation about.

Maybe you don't know yet what you are looking for...

Martin There is a real database. It's called PostgreSQL and comes as a

Indeed. I am very happy with PostgreSQL. Can only recommend it Oracle
and Sybase have announced support for Linux too...

Joris Installing and removing LOOKS easy but there's very little REAL

Huh?

Martin Maybe it's a major lack in the whole community that there are only

Martin programs since I'm able to use the power of LaTeX.

Not really. Why should one make such demands when there are very good
alternatives around. I once showed a LaTeX'd document to a high court judge,
and he was so impressed with it that he actually started to learn to write
LaTeX although he never bothered writing a single line of code. He was the
opinion that the documents just look so much better with LaTeX, and I agree.

PPP (file locations) did change between 1.3 and 2.0. Do you have
'noauth' in your /etc/ppp/provider file? Adding 'noauth' is a common
need when changing from 1.3 to 2.0.

Re: Backspace in xterm (again)

1998-09-13 Thread Pete Harlan
After some experimentation, I found that the following works if you add it
 to /etc/X11/Xresources:

 *VT100.Translations: #override KeyBackSpace: string(\177)\n\
MetaKeyBackSpace: string(\033\177)\n\
...

Didn't produce any change for me.

 bash-2.01$ bind -p | grep back=20
...
 \e\C-h: backward-kill-word
 \e\C-?: backward-kill-word

And that's why. Bash is expecting a literal ESCAPE, and doesn't really
care what key you use to get it.

Emacs running inside an xterm doesn't see Metas either. Nothing in an
xterm acts like it's seeing a Meta-backspace, even though it sees
metas for every other key combo (afaik).

/Somewhere/ something is special-casing Meta-backspace, and that ought
to be fixed. I'd be willing to live with a workaround such as you
proposed but it doesn't work for me. Does anyone have any idea which
layer might be interfering with M-backspace?

Another odd thing is that rxvt works (sort of---alt and meta are
switched). Old binaries of xterm /don't/ work, though I don't have a
statically-linked one to try out. Maybe it's a glibc bug somewhere?
No, because remote Bo xterms, which work when sitting at that machine,
don't work when displaying on my Slink machine.

I'm stymied.
