I'm not clear on when its ok to upload a fix to a stable distribution. This is clearly not a security issue or even a serious problem. Would it still be appropriate to upload to slink? It's the eternal debate about what the word 'stable' means in a software distribution. One definition is, non-experimental, but up to date. Another is, Changes only for security reasons. Debian seems to use the latter definition. Cable modem, Debian firewall/proxy and home PC's - advice!

Someone have advice on how to do this - tips/tricks/pitfalls? Maybe a good idea of which readme's and howto's to use? I'm not bad at config, but this part's pretty new to me... The PC is blank right now, and I'm thinking about just setting it up as a basic home PC using eth0 (the cable modem) as the FTP for pulling Debian to it, then adding whatever I need - I'm thinking ipfwadmin might be enough, put 2 NIC's in it and connect the second one to my hub and the other PC's. Sound practical? Anyone wanting to give advice feel free - [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Motorola ModemSurfr 28.8 + Linux 2.2.x?

With 2.2.x the modem responds to ATZ but after that it hangs and stops responding to commands. Any ideas what could cause this or how could this be fixed? TIA, Marcelo

I'm currently running kernel 2.2.7 (under potato), so I'm using ipchains in my (apparently feeble g) attempts to do this. After consulting with the ipchains HOWTO, I entered the following: ipchains -A input -p udp -s 0.0.0.0/24 netbios-ns -l -j DENY ipchains -A input -p tcp -s 0.0.0.0/24 netbios-ns -l -j DENY After doing this, however, my logfiles are showing the exact same behaviour. Presumably I'm missing something... any pointers as to what? Thanx!

(I could do it in GTK[1], but the Xaw course notes I was using have gone offline.) In other words don't trust this code to be the definitive implementation. ** Step 2: start this up when the login widget is presented. in xdm's Xsetup file (which should be in /etc/X11/xdm): /root/xshutdown -bg gray -fn lucidasans-12 -geom -126+380 echo $! /var/run/xshutdown.pid ** Step 3: kill it when a user sucessfully logs in. in xdm's Xstartup file: pid=$(cat /var/run/xshutdown.pid 2/dev/null) test $pid kill $pid 2/dev/null (once again, syntax here is cribbed from how Debian's default scripts[2] deal with xconsole (which I have disabled anyway). In this case that should make it pretty solid though.) Since the little Xaw proggie runs as root, it is allowed to shut down the computer. There could be a security hole somewhere, but I'm not going to get too concerned there. [1] the problem with GTK is that it doesn't implement -geom, which I use to but the shutdown button in the lower left corner of the login widget (kludge! kludge!). You can also use +0-0 or -5-5 for the lower left corner or 5 pixels from the lower right... read 'man X' and experiment. plus GTK looks kinda silly without a window manager frame. FW: using a remote drive with taper
System 1: 486 with scsi and a DAT System 2: K6 with no scsi :) Both are running latest potato and 2.2.x kernels. What I want to do is backup to the DAT from the K6, and I'd like to use taper. I can tar to [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/dev/st0 or /dev/nst0 just fine, and from within taper I can do the various tape testing things, so I think that all the permissions and config stuff is fine. However, when I try to back up, it rewinds the [EMAIL PROTECTED] drive, then errors out saying that the device is busy. What I *think* is going on is that the DAT is ACK'ing to the rewind right away, and the K6 tries to start accessing it again before that rmt is actually done, so it thinks the drive is busy. Anyone have any ideas about how to fix this, or any guesses about something else that might be causing it? Thanks, Moses -- Moses Leslie [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi all! I'm thinking of upgrading to Potato, because I want to use some of the newer stuff, (wine, for instance) that's compiled against glibc2.1. Should I expect some of my self-compiled programs not function correctly with glibc2.1? Just how exactly painful is it? TIA -- Arcady Genkin I opened up my wallet, and it's full of blood... - GsYDE
mgetty conflicts with pppd
I'm having some weird interaction between mgetty and pppd/chat. I have mgetty running on a couple of modems. When I dialout (pon), I start getting error messages from mgetty in the log, like 05/01 20:47:09 yS1 mdm_read_byte: read returned 0: Success 05/01 20:47:09 yS1 wfr: error in read(): Success 05/01 20:47:09 yS1 huh? Junk on the line? However, mgetty manages to send a few CRs through or something which causes my chat script to fail (it aborts the connection). When I disable mgetty on that port in inittab, it works just fine. The other modem port has this problem on occasion too, although it runs a 24x7 connection so I don't notice it much. Is there a workaround? It's most annoying and has been bugging me for a while. Hamish -- Hamish Moffatt VK3TYD. CCs of replies from mailing lists are welcome.

I have not had the problem you discribe but have tried taper on both a 486DX/50 and 686MX/166 box using an Adaptec 1520 and Symbios 53c810a interface. I was able to backup without a problem on both boxes but the restore never did work correctly. When I got that message I replaced the drive and reinstalled debian. I then recieved that message a few minutes later but this time on the second drive I had installed. When I was ready to give up I changed the password for pow on the nis-client with yppasswd, then it worked, and I could change it on to server to with out any problems. But that isn´t necessary in a working system, is it? I have added +:: in passwd, + in shadow and +::: in group and in /var/yp/nicknames I´ve added 'shadow shadow.byname', just in case. I have done Somme on both the nis-client and the nis-server. If I restart the nis-server the console on the nis-client print out this message: May 1 18:42:27 lazy icmplogd: destination unreachable from supreme.pow.com [192.0.0.7] I don't know why, after all ypcat works, as well as finger. mount: special device /dev/cdrom does not exist What is wrong here? The device /dev/cdrom is typically just a symbolic link to whatever real device your CD-ROM is on. You can straighten this out easily. First, double-check to see if /dev/cdrom exists ('ls -l /dev/cdrom'). If it doesn't exist, just add it in. For example, let's say your CD-ROM is /dev/hdc (first device on the secondary IDE controller). Just become root, go into /dev, and execute a 'ln -s /dev/hdc cdrom' and you'll have a new cdrom device. -- Regards, | [EMAIL PROTECTED]| Microsoft: Making the .| [EMAIL PROTECTED] | world safe for computing Randy| [EMAIL PROTECTED] | illiteracy. That depends on how many packages are installed. It can take many hours with a modem connection. i already have bo and hamm in CDs and it's getting kind of ridiculous to get a CD just to upgrade. It's not necessary to use a CD for either an upgrade or a new installation. For those without flat-rate telephone service or a fast internet connection it is probably a good choice, however. Re: How do I upgrade slink-potato using apt-get?

If you are prepared to have programs become temporarily unusable, it's not too bad. I've only noticed minor inconveniences (fingers crossed as I type that). You can upgrade by pointing your /etc/apt/sources.list entry to unstable and using 'apt-get dist-upgrade'. Matt, Debian specific books were recently discussed on this list. Please check the archives in the last two weeks for suggestions beyond those I offer here. Linux Press (www.linuxpress.com) has several books that are Debian specific: One I have first hand knowledge of is the Debian Linux User's Guide by Dale Scheetz. It comes with 4 Debian 2.1 CDs. It costs about $40. I have a copy of the 1.3 version that has proved useful with all versions of Debian since I bought it. It comes with 30 days of email support from the author. You will find that the many, many contributors to this list will help you as well. BTW: There is an html version that can be downloaded and used. Some one creating a .deb package of the book as well. There are some non-Debian specific books from O'Reilly: Mat Welch's Running Linux, Linux in a Nut Shell (brief command syntax) I seem to recall having heard about a Linux Administration, and there is Sobel's Hands On Linux, that deals with Caldera's version. I have several of these, use and like them. Dale has another book with Linux Press. Go to the web page and look at books. --David David Teague, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Debian GNU/Linux Because software support is free, timely, useful, technically accurate, and friendly. (Thanks guys!)

Bootdisking
Ok... recently i felt the need to make my own boot disk. I've gotten past a huge number of problems myself, but now i'm stuck. When I boot, i get: Loading... Uncompressing Linux... zgv
Hi I run a 486-DX2/66, 16 MB Ram, two 1Gig SCSI disks and a CD ROM on an Adaptec 2840 controller. I have a trident 9400 1MB video card, and a KFC 15 inch monitor. This system WAS BEFORE a CRASH, running 1.1, wonderfully. zgv worked, out of the box. NOW, running Debian 2.0, installed from Cheapbytes CD released in November. I installed zgv_2.8-4.deb. At least dpkg -i seems happy. She wanted svgalib, so I installed what it asked for. That dpkg set up to its apparent satisfaction as well. But zgv does not work. The problem is that the screen rolls with no display when I attempt to display a jpeg file. The following svga libraries appear when I issue the command locate libvga /usr/lib/libc5-compat/libvga.so.1 /usr/lib/libc5-compat/libvga.so.1.2.13 /usr/lib/libc5-compat/libvgagl.so.1 /usr/lib/libc5-compat/libvgagl.so.1.2.13 I put my monitor's timings from the XF86Config file (that did work under 1.1) and information about my video card in the libvga.config file. Would someone help me? --David David Teague, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Debian GNU/Linux Because reboots are for hardware and kernel updates. Software should be expected to be stable.

swapfile and more ram
my question is this: i'm soon to be getting more ram, and i was wondering if there's a way to resize my swap to make use of it. i have 16 ram now, and my swap partition is about 32 megs. is it possible to make it bigger after i move up to 32-48 ram without messing with partitions again? i'm a relative newbie to this so if you reply please speak in simple terms g. thanks!

Why resize? When you going to be moving to 32M ram, linux will still be making trips to swap. I'm running 32M physical, and have about 90M of swap. My base X system (just X, no other applications running in it), goes for 20M alone( 1280x1024 at 16bpp). When I use xemacs with it, I can still fit in 32M, but netscape+xemacs uses up about 15M of swap space on top of 32M physical ram. ANyway, bottom line is, you dont need to resize your swap. That memory will get used. Andrew --- Andrei S. Ivanov [EMAIL PROTECTED] UIN 12402354 http://members.tripod.com/AnSIv --Little things for Linux.
Help with TKDESK FIXED!!!
Thanks for the replys back concerning the problem that I had with TKDESK not working correctly... What I did was point the mouse to the bookshelf and clicked on the RIGHT mouse button and it brought up some options, where I found File browser, then I clicked it, and brought up the full TKDESK top, with all of the menus showing TKDESK, DIRECTORY, COMMAND, BOOKMARK and OPTIONS, with three columns... Then I save it as it was, then exited the program and then tried it again, it came up just picture perfect... Thanks to those who had replied... The short answer is, No. You cannot extend your swap partition if your disk is already fully partitioned. If you have any free space, you can create an additional swap partition. It seems unlikely, however, that you will need any additional swap space. The purpose of swap space is to extend your memory space. If you try to run a program that needs more RAM than there is available, older pages will get swapped out into your swap space. It isn't used at all until it is needed; if you run the same programs after your RAM upgrade, your swap requirement should decrease, not increase. At the momemt, you have an effective 48Mb available to running programs; if the demand exceeds that, you will get a program aborting for lack of memory. After your upgrade, you will have 64-80Mb available. If you are increasing your memory because you are going to have more programs running simultaneously, there may indeed be a case for increasing your swap space. -- Oliver Elphick[EMAIL PROTECTED] Isle of Wight http://www.lfix.co.uk/oliver PGP key from public servers; key ID 32B8FAA1 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you; But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. You would see the promiscuous flag in the device configuration when you run ifconfig. If it's not there, it's not running in promiscuous mode. ifconfig -a or ifconfig device - Original Message - From: Eugene Sevinian [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: debian-user@lists.debian.org Sent: Saturday, May 01, 1999 3:44 PM Subject: checking promiscuous mode Hi, ppl, Does anybody know how to test whether the network card set to promiscuous mode. Re: Hard Lock-Up Problems
James M . Mastros wrote: 1) Are their any unusual noizes noticable either during or slightly before this lockup? Not unusual as such, like say the sound of a HD crashing (been through that) but there is a reproducible pattern. There is usually a heavy disk load (possibly this just makes it more likely to occur), then it stops. A second later there's a split-second disk access, then another second later it hangs. 2) Is your hard-drive under warranty? No. That sounds ominous. I've discovered that if I keep the disk space over 50Mb (100 to be sure), files don't seem to be written where this stuffs up. 3) Do you get any log messages before lockup? No. 4) Will pressing numlock toggle the LED? No. 5) Does shift-scrolllock give you less then 128k of free swap? When it's crashed shift, alt and ctrl scrolllock don't work. Before, fsck uses up all memory but never starts using up swap. This is what I would expect from something that reads the whole disk through, it's just caching what it can, but not actually requiring the memory. 6) Have you run e2fsck -c -C0 -vv root device? Have you run it repetedly? ('man e2fsck' before running this command. Make shure you remount root readonly. Having messed that up once, let me assure you it is not a good thing.) I just did that. It seems it found a bad block. The following was the output; hda: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequestError } hda: read_intr: status=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBArect=3646226 sector = 1327826 end_request: I/O error, dev 03:04 (hda) sector 1327826 That's as good as I can transcribe it. I ran it multiple times. The second time and later the error came out twice but I think it only came out once the first time. Anyway, this always crashes on checking directory structure in the usual way. I ran badblocks -o and discovered the bad block was 663913. Running multiple times seems to just come up with this one bad block. This is not where I would have suspected to find it, more like 770xxx. Even though e2fsck man says it marks the blocks it finds as bad, it still seems to crash e2fsck.
