 echo 1 /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

ftp://debian-portugues.debian.org.br/debian-portugues stable main contrib
non-free non-us, tentei gerar os pacotes do xfree, com o patch do Quinot
aplicada na xlib. Usei o deb-make, conforme a recomendação do Maçan,
mas acabei gerando um pacotão xfree_3.3.5_i386.deb (tá eu sei que já tá
ultrapassado, mas usei como teste). Como não achei muita referência do
deb-make fiquei meio perdido. Alguém sabe onde fica a documentação do
dito?

Re: Suspend and X

2000-06-07 Thread Lee Bradshaw
I set replies to go to debian-laptop.

I actually posted one solution to the debian-laptop list this morning. I
force the laptop to switch to vt 1 when it suspends. Add the following
script to /etc/apm/event.d/01chvt (be sure it's executable):

#!/bin/sh
# change to vt1 when suspending to keep X from locking

if [ $1 = suspend ]; then
  chvt 1
fi

Of course after suspending the system comes back up on vt 1, but I can
easily switch back to X if it keeps the system from crashing.

Does anyone know how to grab Fn-F1 (Setup Menu) or Fn-F3 (Battery
status) that switch back to text mode? They also crash if you hit
those keys from X, but are fine from a text console.

If you find out how do suspend without switching to a text console
first, please let us know.

did see any updates on apmd. Now I can only suspend when I am in console

does something right because it shuts down my pcmcia card before
freezing. I have tried to recompile the kernel with different apm

nothing helped. I have no clue on what to do now. Any ideas?

All you need to do is to install pppd and mgetty. Put local_ip:remote_ip
in /etc/ppp/options. You'd be all set.

Re: About Centralizing Passwords

hi ya benjamin...

what kind of authentification are oyu trying to do ??

- user to get shell account on the server...
- a win98/NT user to get to the linux resources...
- a linux user that can get to other unix/linux resources

users that once authenticated can get emails
/var/spool/mail problem...
on the mail server issue...
-
you probably do NOT want (insecure) mail servers to be used
the same way as normal home/file servers

users that once authentifcated can get to their home dirs
from any server anywhere

windows users that can get to unix resources like printing
to the printers or unix users that can print to printers
connected to winnt

NIS is useful for sharing files amongst machines...

but i do NOT use NIS...i just automounters and mount the
needed directories from which ever server they logged in at

as far as one machine that has passwd authentification...
i tend to dislike it... and rather do some work and cut and paste
passwd files...( via scripts ..hopefully doing it securely )

and one day..guess i should go learn what pam does...
in detail...

Is there a client/server protocol that supports centralizing password

requires that you STILL edit the password file and specify user dirs..
etc. Perhaps I'm reading this wrong..

Regardless, what I'm really needing is some protocal that will pass
session data. So basically I want all my client servers to 'look' at a
master server's password file to authenticate it's users. This includes
 default shell, home dir, etc..

I'm sure some of you have set up NIS successfully, so maybe you might
point me in the right direction. If NIS does this, that would be
great.. I can use radius for the password data and NIS for the session
data.. If NIS doesn't, I'm SOL.

SOMEONE has to have done this? Am I asking in the wrong place?

shows as closed. I used :
 /sbin/ipchains -A input -s 0.0.0.0/0 -d $MY_IP 139 -p tcp -j REJECT

Stealth ? What do you mean with that anyway, because REJECT sends
something back, DENY with not. If you just mean you want to firewall it,
it's correct ofcourse, then it only depends on personal preferance.

(small explanation: DENY will let trying connections timeout, REJECT will
let them fail immediately.)

if I'm not mistaken, you need to add udp as well, also 139 is only one of
the three ports of netbios (just look in /etc/services):
netbios-ns 137/tcp # NETBIOS Name Service
netbios-ns 137/udp
netbios-dgm 138/tcp # NETBIOS Datagram Service
netbios-dgm 138/udp
netbios-ssn 139/tcp # NETBIOS session service
netbios-ssn 139/udp

(disclaimer: this taken from the OpenBSD services file not Debian services

 Why is this now working??

Re: Gnus broken by Emacs upgrade!!

2000-06-07 Thread Jan Ulrich Hasecke
Hi Debians!

After I did the upgrade today to Emacs 20.6-2, this happens whenever I
   try to run Gnus:

Yes, I got the same thing. A stopgap measure that worked for me
was to go into /usr/share/emacs/20.6/lisp/gnus and delete all the
.elc files, leaving only the corresponding .el files. Apparently
compiling these files triggers a bug. (You will have to make sure
you have emacs20-el installed first, of course.)

Same thing here. I installed gnus to work around it. The version is
different from that of emacs20 and it comes with MIME support which I
really like. Now I can read all those Japanese headers, finally!

Apt-get upgraded my GNU Emacs to 20.6 while getting mule-ucs. I
installed the newest Gnus. But now Gnus will not start and I get the
following message from cron.

/etc/cron.daily/suidmanager:
File /usr/lib/emacs/20.3/i386-debian-linux-gnu/movemail registered but not
+installed

AFAIR movemail was never properly installed.
What shall I do with this 20.3 directory.

Generally I use XEmacs, but I wanted to try mule-ucs, which only comes
for GNU Emacs. Please correct me if this is wrong!

How can I start gnus in Emacs? I have no .el files in the above
mentioned gnus directory.

TIA

I still have my case statement in there, to not switch if it is currently

I close the laptop display, it doesn't switch and it locks up... any

help with web security

2000-06-07 Thread Shao Zhang
Hi,
I am setting up an automated registration system where the cgi
scripts need to do the following:

1. add a new user to the system and write to passwd files
2. update dns, restart named
3. update httpd.conf, restart httpd
4. update qmail conf, restart qmail-{..}
5. many more...

Now, to do all of this, surely I need root access. However,
there is no way I can configure apache to run as root, and
suEXEC won't help me much because it affectively runs that
virtual webserver as root.

So how do I achieve this while still enforce good security?

One idea that I have is, let apache(cgi scripts) to write to a
file with all the necessary information, and then have crontab
to run the program as root to read this info and do all the update...

Thanks for any help in advance.

Shao.

Looks like /dev/hdc is in trouble. While this could be caused
by other stuff on the same IDE cable or on your PCI bus, if all
of the messages are pointing at the same device (they seem to
be) it's the most likely source.

Most likely causes:
  - /dev/hdc is dying.
  - Overheating. Especially if you have several drives, with
maybe not as much air space between them as they might
prefer, and have only a CPU and PSU fan. Especially if
there's an extended period of disk activity (say, some 7am
cron jobs) before things come unstuck.

how does one redirect the input for a terminal ?

2000-06-07 Thread Jan Pfeifer
hi all,

I'm trying to compress with passwords a couple of hundred files using
zip (I have to use this, as some of the compressed files will go to
windoze users), but zip only seems to take the password from a
terminal, so I can't use the redirector of bash. Is there a way of
fooling it, so it reads from a file, believing it to be a terminal ?
Or any other way round ?

cheers to all and thanks for any help!

jan

Re: how does one redirect the input for a terminal ?

2000-06-07 Thread Philipp Kolmann
Hi Jan,
as you can see in man zip: row 515

   -P password
use password to encrypt zipfile entries (if any).
THIS IS INSECURE! Many multi-user operating sys
tems provide ways for any user to see the current
command line of any other user; even on stand-alone
systems there is always the threat of over-the-
shoulder peeking. Storing the plaintext password
as part of a command line in an automated script is

Info-ZIP 14 August 1999 (v2.3) 8

ZIP(1L) ZIP(1L)

even worse. Whenever possible, use the non-echo
ing, interactive prompt to enter passwords. (And
where security is truly important, use strong
encryption such as Pretty Good Privacy instead of
the relatively weak encryption provided by standard
  zipfile utilities.)

hope that helps...

3Com 3C920 Help

2000-06-07 Thread Declan Grady
I just installed the base system on my DELL Latitiude LS400, which has a
3Com 3C920 adapter (3C905C-TX Compatible) but it did not find it during
install process.

Do I need to add an ifconfig eth0 .. etc line ?
As I'm totally new to Linux, I dont even know if I have to configure this
manually !

Also, how do I use a boot-manager (and where do I get one !) ? - I need to
boot either W98 or debian, each on its own partition .. at present I can use
cfdisk and fdisk to set the active partition then reboot.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks

lilo = Linux Loader = Bootmanager

you can edit the lilo.conf file in /etc/lilo.conf

mine looks like this... I use it to boot Win98 and linux:

boot=/dev/hda2
install=/boot/boot.b
map=/boot/map
prompt
timeout=100

image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=Linux
read-only

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.13
label=old
read-only

other=/dev/hda1
label=win
loader=/boot/chain.b
table=/dev/hda

it may need some adjusting for your personal use.. (esp the
partitions...)
after you made the changes, always call lilo (as root) to write this
into the bootsector...

hope that helps

BTW if you want to boot win ondefault, just put that entry in front of
the linux entries...

Freeze on supend in text mode

2000-06-07 Thread Dominique Rousset
Hello,

I'm running up-to-date potato (ker. 2.2.15-ide) on a HP vectra VLi8 Cel. 466.

I had to enable APM mainly to get the fan control working (and making the
machine very quiet) with append = apm=on in the lilo.conf file.

I'm using the machine in X mode and everything is fine but if I let it go in
suspend mode with a text console, I loose keyboard control and I can't get
back to X mode (Alt-F7). The only way I found to get control is to reboot with
a network connection since the system itself keeps on running.

Any clue ?
Thanks

Quoting Johann Spies ([EMAIL PROTECTED]):
If I use stty to configure a serial port, will the settings be the
same after a reboot? Or do I have to put the settings in some init
 file similar to /etc/rc.boot/0setserial.

I think you'll find that even reloading the serial module will
reset the port, so if you do it with an initialisation script,
make sure the module is loaded from /etc/modules and not on
demand, and either use rc.boot (but that's now deprecated) or
make sure the S number is greater than 20 for the stty script.

Cheers,

Apt and dselect dis-agree what should be done

2000-06-07 Thread M. Tavasti

Why quite often with newly upgraded system, dselect still would
install some packages, and maybe get some problems?

I mean situation, where I run apt-get upgrade, then enter to dselect
(to look after some suitable packages for task XXX), dselect is
automatically marking some packages for install. It's ok for me, but
when it's getting some conflicts, then I'm puzzled, what should I do?

I use dselect sometimes, when I don't know what is name of package, or
I want to browse what I have installed. And aptitude is not working...

Two possible solutions:

1.) If you don't want to use Acrobat Reader for some reason, you could try

No, I was replying to a message from debian-user. I left both groups
this time since others have.

I actually posted one solution to the debian-laptop list this morning. I
force the laptop to switch to vt 1 when it suspends. Add the following
script to /etc/apm/event.d/01chvt (be sure it's executable):

How important is that specific filename? I assume it is simply to
determine in which order the scripts are executed... any specific reason
why it should be executed early?

I just picked it. On my system I have:

  freedom /etc/apm/event.d $ ls
  00hwclock* 01chvt* pcmcia*

 #!/bin/sh
 # change to vt1 when suspending to keep X from locking

 if [ $1 = suspend ]; then
   chvt 1
 fi

Since I'm usually in X, I added:

if [ $1 = resume ]; then
  chvt 7
fi

I'd prefer to go back to the same virtual terminal I was on. Is there
a way to query the system for what tty is active? I tried putting
/usr/bin/tty /tmp/ttysuspend into my script, but all I ever see
in the output file is not a tty. Does it work properly in your case
statement? /usr/bin/tty seems to provide something in /dev if I run it
in an xterm or on the console.

Of course after suspending the system comes back up on vt 1, but I can
easily switch back to X if it keeps the system from crashing.

I still have my case statement in there, to not switch if it is currently
on tty[1-9]. It seems to work very well if I use apm -s as root, but if
I close the laptop display, it doesn't switch and it locks up... any
 ideas?

No ideas about your problem, here's what happens for me in X:

apm -s change to vt 1, suspend to disk
close on ac power no effect (bios option)
close on batterychange to vt1, suspend to disk

Good luck.

Andrew, it's quite easy to set things up, at least with the Basic DSL
account:
- install pppoe.deb
- configure the DNS servers in /etc/resolv.conf
- include your login username and password in /etc/ppp/pap-secrets
- add your username to /etc/pp/peers/dsl-provider
- modify /etc/init.d/network by substituting 'dsl-provider' every place
the file has 'provider'
- touch /etc/ppp/ppp_on_boot
Then you can start the connection with '/etc/init.d/ppp start' and stop
it with '/etc/init.d/ppp stop'. The README that is in the pppoe.deb
package explains all of this.

With a regular DSL account that gives you a fixed ip address, things
might work differently; I presume you don't need to use pppoe, but
that's beyond my knowledge horizon.

HTH.

You need to install qmail-src and ucspi-tcp-src packages, build them with
build-ucspi-tcp and build-qmail.

For building qmail, make sure that no qmail-related uid-s and gid-s are in
/etc/passwd and /etc/group. (the five qmail? users and alias, and group
qmail).

After installing look at README.Debian in /usr/doc/qmail. And moreover,
read a few qmail documentation, eg. 'Life with qmail' to know how qmail
works. It is very easy to use, but you need to know how things are done.

Configuring X for two possible screens

2000-06-07 Thread Moore, Paul
Hi,
I have a laptop which I can run either using the internal 800x600 screen, or
an external monitor which will run at 1024x768. I'd like to be able to set
up the system so that I can start X to run on whichever is connected (eg, I
could have aliases startx-internal and startx-monitor).

I can set up an XF86Config file which includes monitor definitions for both
monitors. The vide card is the same in both cases. What I don't know, and
can't find in the online docs, is how to run startx to tell it which monitor
is currently plugged in... I guess I may need to add more stuff to my
XF86Config - I just don't know what!

Any hints, pointers to relevant documentation or preferably complete
solutions (:-)) gratefully accepted.
Paul.

You need to slow down, and you need to do the following:

1) Realize that this list is not a help-desk. All you do is post questions,
usually with insufficient information. When you are successful at getting
something to work, post your results so others can have it available. I for
one still don't know how you solved your 'telnet localhost 25' problem!

2) Since your Windows machine does seem able to send mail, learn how to copy
files from Linux onto a floppy, or learn how to mount a Windows partition in
Linux (if they're on the same machine) so you can post *complete*
information. This bounced email is a case in point. You posted a snippet
yesterday, and even less of a snippet today!

As for the mail problem, I suggested to you offlist last night that you try
the *correct* name of pacbell's SMTP host in sendmail.cf as a 'smart host'.
I stil don't know if you tried that because I didn't hear back from you!
Look in your Windows config for this server name.

Look, you have gone through exim, and now sendmail. Qmail isn't going to
solve your problem!

Get used to being confused (we all are). Do some more reading. Try the LDP.
Stick to one problem at a time. You can't send mail but you want to work on
ipchains? I don't think so...slow down.

If you wish, send me (personally) the ENTIRE bounce message you received,
with all its headers, and send me your ENTIRE sendmail.cf file. And figure
out where your Windows install is sending its mail and try using that
information.

Re: Configuring X for two possible screens

2000-06-07 Thread Ron Rademaker
I would make 2 XF86Config files (eg. one called XF86Config-int and one
called XF86Config-ext) and create to scripts (eg. startx-internal and
startx-monitor), in those scripts, a file /etc/X11/XF86Config is removed,
a symlink is made to the needed config file, with the name
/etc/X11/XF86Config, after that startx 'll be executed.

Example for startx-monitor:

#!/bin/sh

rm -f /etc/X11/XF86Config # Remove old symlink
ln -s /etc/X11/XF86Config-ext /etc/X11/XF86Config # Create correct symlink
/usr/bin/X11/startx # startx

You can create another script similar like this for the internal monitor.

AFAIK (though I've been known to be wrong before, so double-check) PEM is an

That, I know works with the crt file that I purchased from Verisign.

With the help of cfdisk 0.8, I created a partition table with this shape:

nameflags partition type file system
size

hda1bootprimary Win95 FAT32
3498 MB

hda5logical Linux Swap
125 MB

hda6bootlogical Linux
4408 MB

When I saved this configuration, I recieved this error message:

writing partition table...

no primary partition is bootable

The DOS-MBR can'tboot from it.

Change bootability of current pariution

So far the message. Well, at this moment, the cursor is at hda6 and this
device is marked as bootable.

Can you please tell me, what I did wrong here?

With kind regards

  1. [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe and

This is the correct and effective way to do this. I have used this. It
works, but in a three step process:
1) You send to debian-user-request a message with a subject of
unsubscribe
2) debian-user-request send back a confirmation message, with
some request id
3) You reply to the message.

There is no need to edit the reply at all: just send. I, being more
picky,
like to take our the Re: in front of the Confirm n1n2n3n4..., and
remove almost the entire body of the message except my unsubscribe
request,
since I have the penchant for putting unsubscribe in the message body
also. In the same manner, I look both ways when crossing a one-way
street.

  2. [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a message body of unsubscribe

It would be nice if debian-user-request could handle it either way, but
the Subject: is really the required field.

secret data for php pages

2000-06-07 Thread Robert Varga

Is there a way in which I can store some data (eg. mysql passwords) safely
from other users on a website and retrieve it from php3/4?

The site is running php3 or php4 as an apache_module, and I need to
provide separate mysql databases for each users inaccessible to all other
users, so each user's data in the database is safe from other users.

However the mysql passwords are need to be stored on the server
somewhere, and then they are retrievable, if special means are not taken.
I would be interested in these special means.

Since apache modules run with the id of the webserver itself
(www-data.www-data) therefore if the user passwords are stored in .php
files, then they must be readable by www-data, and therefore they are
retrievable (1. put on a php3 script which lists the public_html dir of
the other user, 2. put on a php3 script which displays all the files of
the other user's public_html, and there it is, 3. use this recursively
to reach directly untraversable directories).

I would not like to use php-cgi if it is not a necessity, due to the
performance drop.

Robert Varga

one can write a php3/4 script to include the file with passwds for example
 and
 make use of it.

they have to be able to read certain files, a well configed server would not
allow this.

include the files from your script. The file can be elsewhere, the server
 just
has to be able to get to it.

This is the scenario I told in my letter:

If I would like to include it, then it has to be retrievable to the user
www-data, and therefore it can be retrieved.

That is not the same problem. When I refer on users, they are meant as
system users on the webserver, not web visitors.

What I need is a way to provide separate mysql databases to all
virtualhosts and webserver users, without a possibility for them to access
each other's databases.

Robert

You need to use sessions. Either use phplib under php3, or use php4.

CD-RW drive), but there's something strange going on in there.

I eventually ended up borrowing a 15 monitor and got Debian installed using

struggling to get X to work (if you don't pass the right command-line

Thanks to all for the informative responses to my question.

Just a tip: I've had *much* success using xf86config instead
XF86Setup. Text-based, it will run on any system that can
display anything at all. Quite convenient using strange 2nd
hand hardware ;-)

each v host gets a user, the web daemon runs as that user. The mysql passwds
are in a file that that user can read. Only people who can learn it are other
members of the v host.
