Alguém sabe onde fica a documentação do dito? Re: Suspend and X
I set replies to go to debian-laptop. I actually posted one solution to the debian-laptop list this morning. I force the laptop to switch to vt 1 when it suspends. Add the following script to /etc/apm/event.d/01chvt (be sure it's executable): #!/bin/sh # change to vt1 when suspending to keep X from locking if [ $1 = suspend ]; then chvt 1 fi Of course after suspending the system comes back up on vt 1, but I can easily switch back to X if it keeps the system from crashing. Does anyone know how to grab Fn-F1 (Setup Menu) or Fn-F3 (Battery status) that switch back to text mode? They also crash if you hit those keys from X, but are fine from a text console. If you find out how do suspend without switching to a text console first, please let us know. On Tue, Jun 06, 2000 at 08:11:24AM +, Mats Rynge wrote: Hi! Re: Gnus broken by Emacs upgrade!!
Hi Debians! After I did the upgrade today to Emacs 20.6-2, this happens whenever I try to run Gnus: Yes, I got the same thing. A stopgap measure that worked for me was to go into /usr/share/emacs/20.6/lisp/gnus and delete all the .elc files, leaving only the corresponding .el files. Apparently compiling these files triggers a bug. (You will have to make sure you have emacs20-el installed first, of course.) Same thing here. I installed gnus to work around it. The version is different from that of emacs20 and it comes with MIME support which I really like. Now I can read all those Japanese headers, finally! Apt-get upgraded my GNU Emacs to 20.6 while getting mule-ucs. I installed the newest Gnus. But now Gnus will not start and I get the following message from cron. /etc/cron.daily/suidmanager: File /usr/lib/emacs/20.3/i386-debian-linux-gnu/movemail registered but not +installed AFAIR movemail was never properly installed. What shall I do with this 20.3 directory. Generally I use XEmacs, but I wanted to try mule-ucs, which only comes for GNU Emacs. Please correct me if this is wrong! How can I start gnus in Emacs? I have no .el files in the above mentioned gnus directory. TIA juh -- Das Realismuskonzept in Krzysztof Kieslowskis DEKALOG http://www.koeln.netsurf.de/~janulrich.hasecke/Dekalog/welcome.html

I set replies to go to debian-laptop. And you added debian-user to the addresses? I actually posted one solution to the debian-laptop list this morning. I force the laptop to switch to vt 1 when it suspends. Add the following script to /etc/apm/event.d/01chvt (be sure it's executable): How important is that specific filename? I assume it is simply to determine in which order the scripts are executed... any specific reason why it should be executed early? #!/bin/sh # change to vt1 when suspending to keep X from locking if [ $1 = suspend ]; then chvt 1 fi Of course after suspending the system comes back up on vt 1, but I can easily switch back to X if it keeps the system from crashing. I still have my case statement in there, to not switch if it is currently on tty[1-9]. It seems to work very well if I use apm -s as root, but if I close the laptop display, it doesn't switch and it locks up... any ideas? Hugo van der Merwe

help with web security
Hi, I am setting up an automated registration system where the cgi scripts need to do the following: 1. add a new user to the system and write to passwd files 2. update dns, restart named 3. update httpd.conf, restart httpd 4. update qmail conf, restart qmail-{..} 5. many more... Now, to do all of this, surely I need root access. However, there is no way I can configure apache to run as root, and suEXEC won't help me much because it affectively runs that virtual webserver as root. So how do I achieve this while still enforce good security? One idea that I have is, let apache(cgi scripts) to write to a file with all the necessary information, and then have crontab to run the program as root to read this info and do all the update... While this could be caused by other stuff on the same IDE cable or on your PCI bus, if all of the messages are pointing at the same device (they seem to be) it's the most likely source. Most likely causes: - /dev/hdc is dying. - Overheating. Especially if you have several drives, with maybe not as much air space between them as they might prefer, and have only a CPU and PSU fan. Especially if there's an extended period of disk activity (say, some 7am cron jobs) before things come unstuck. - Bad or poorly fitted IDE or power cable. I'd have a close look at the cooling for /dev/hdc and maybe give it more room or install a drive fan, but I'd probably also source a replacement drive in case. Re: how does one redirect the input for a terminal ?
Hi Jan, as you can see in man zip: row 515 -P password use password to encrypt zipfile entries (if any). THIS IS INSECURE! Many multi-user operating sys tems provide ways for any user to see the current command line of any other user; even on stand-alone systems there is always the threat of over-the- shoulder peeking. Storing the plaintext password as part of a command line in an automated script is Info-ZIP 14 August 1999 (v2.3) 8 ZIP(1L) ZIP(1L) even worse. Whenever possible, use the non-echo ing, interactive prompt to enter passwords. (And where security is truly important, use strong encryption such as Pretty Good Privacy instead of the relatively weak encryption provided by standard zipfile utilities.) hope that helps... greetinx Philipp Jan Pfeifer wrote: hi all, I'm trying to compress with passwords a couple of hundred files using zip (I have to use this, as some of the compressed files will go to windoze users), but zip only seems to take the password from a terminal, so I can't use the redirector of bash. Does it work properly in your case statement? /usr/bin/tty seems to provide something in /dev if I run it in an xterm or on the console. Of course after suspending the system comes back up on vt 1, but I can easily switch back to X if it keeps the system from crashing. I still have my case statement in there, to not switch if it is currently on tty[1-9]. It seems to work very well if I use apm -s as root, but if I close the laptop display, it doesn't switch and it locks up... any ideas? No ideas about your problem, here's what happens for me in X: apm -s change to vt 1, suspend to disk close on ac power no effect (bios option) close on batterychange to vt1, suspend to disk Good luck. -- Lee Bradshaw [EMAIL PROTECTED] (preferred) Alantro Communications [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Configuring X for two possible screens
Hi, I have a laptop which I can run either using the internal 800x600 screen, or an external monitor which will run at 1024x768. I'd like to be able to set up the system so that I can start X to run on whichever is connected (eg, I could have aliases startx-internal and startx-monitor). I can set up an XF86Config file which includes monitor definitions for both monitors. The vide card is the same in both cases. What I don't know, and can't find in the online docs, is how to run startx to tell it which monitor is currently plugged in... I guess I may need to add more stuff to my XF86Config - I just don't know what! Any hints, pointers to relevant documentation or preferably complete solutions (:-)) gratefully accepted. Paul.

When you are successful at getting something to work, post your results so others can have it available. Re: Configuring X for two possible screens
I would make 2 XF86Config files (eg. one called XF86Config-int and one called XF86Config-ext) and create to scripts (eg. startx-internal and startx-monitor), in those scripts, a file /etc/X11/XF86Config is removed, a symlink is made to the needed config file, with the name /etc/X11/XF86Config, after that startx 'll be executed. Example for startx-monitor: #!/bin/sh rm -f /etc/X11/XF86Config # Remove old symlink ln -s /etc/X11/XF86Config-ext /etc/X11/XF86Config # Create correct symlink /usr/bin/X11/startx # startx You can create another script similar like this for the internal monitor. With the help of cfdisk 0.8, I created a partition table with this shape: name flags partition type file system size hda1 bootprimary Win95 FAT32 3498 MB -- hda5 logical Linux Swap 125 MB + hda6 bootlogical Linux 4408 MB +---which one? -- When I saved this configuration, I recieved this error message: writing partition table... no primary partition is bootable The DOS-MBR can'tboot from it. Change bootability of current pariution So far the message. Well, at this moment, the cursor is at hda6 and this device is marked as bootable. Can you please tell me, what I did wrong here? My guess is that the problem is having two partition marked as bootable.

I'm using the machine in X mode and everything is fine but if I let it go in suspend mode with a text console, I loose keyboard control and I can't get back to X mode (Alt-F7). The only way I found to get control is to reboot with a network connection since the system itself keeps on running. Any clue ? not all apm bios' are supported fully with apm.

However I'm preparing an install guide for Debian, and will be performing several dozen 'test' installs over the next few days. I already have all the file. Loading from a local site vs. over a modem could add up to a significant amount of time by the time i'm through ;) anyway, I know how to work around these issues at my site, my point was that newbies probably won't be able to... bye- ron

secret data for php pages
Is there a way in which I can store some data (eg. mysql passwords) safely from other users on a website and retrieve it from php3/4? The site is running php3 or php4 as an apache_module, and I need to provide separate mysql databases for each users inaccessible to all other users, so each user's data in the database is safe from other users. However the mysql passwords are need to be stored on the server somewhere, and then they are retrievable, if special means are not taken. I would be interested in these special means. Since apache modules run with the id of the webserver itself (www-data.www-data) therefore if the user passwords are stored in .php files, then they must be readable by www-data, and therefore they are retrievable (1. put on a php3 script which lists the public_html dir of the other user, 2. put on a php3 script which displays all the files of the other user's public_html, and there it is, 3. use this recursively to reach directly untraversable directories). I would not like to use php-cgi if it is not a necessity, due to the performance drop. Regards, Robert Varga

I might be wrong but ... If you have users on your server, and they are able to run web pages, one can write a php3/4 script to include the file with passwds for example and make use of it. That is not the same problem. When I refer on users, they are meant as system users on the webserver, not web visitors. What I need is a way to provide separate mysql databases to all virtualhosts and webserver users, without a possibility for them to access each other's databases.
