J'ai voulu changer de noyau, après quelques opérations périlleuses,
J'ai fini par ne plus démarrer.

Bref, avec mon cd j'ai réinstallé le kernel d'origine.

Cependant maintenant au démarrage, j'ai les écrans de configuration du password 
root
qui apparaissent. Même si je lui donne un password, il m'en redemande
sans cesse un et je ne peux pas aller plus loin.
Je suis coincé dans cette boucle.

Une idée ?

pppd ---- lynx la solution

J'avais évoqué sur la liste ce pb, jusqu'a ce jour je pouvais me connecter avec 
ppd,
ping fonctionnait mais aucun autre soft.
 La solution : wwwoffled etait lancé au démarrage mais pas configuré. Il 
bloquait la connexion des autres softs.

bonjouroui en effet j'ai un chipset VIA VT82C58 ...mais je n'ai 
pas du tout l'impression que ce sont des plantages de l'usb,parce que les 
leds ne s'eteingnent pas quand ca deconnecte, et le bug surles chipsets via 
provient de l'alimentation. Cependant, de temps en temps(environ 1 fois tous 
les 2 jours), la machine se bloque completement, nerepondant meme plus au 
clavier, plus a telnet, seulement aux ping ... Ca capourrait etre du au 
chipset, mais je n'ai pas reussi a determinerprecisément les causes, ce 
n'est meme pas un débit trop important.En plus j'ai fait des test 
: si j'utilise edonkey (forte utilisation de memoire et de 
disque)directement sur ce serveur, j'ai au moins 10 plantages toutes les 24 
heures,tandis que si je l'utilise sur un ordi derriere la passerelle, j'en 
ai 2 ou3. Il y a aussi quand je copie un fichier sur 
le disque du serveur, caplante assez souvent Mais j'ai 
remarqué que le swap était utilisé d'au moins 13 mo, et si enplus j'utilise 
le disque a fond, ca me parait normal qu'il ai un peu de mal: je compte donc 
rajouter de la RAM quand elle sera redescendue ;-) Sinon 
ca provient peut etre de mon disque dur, parce que avec un"hdparm -t 
/dev/hda" j'ai un "score" de 3.5 mo/s ce qui ai pas terrible (ledisque est 
un IBM 20 go UDMA 66 7200 tr/mn). Avec "hdparm -c1 -d1 -X66/dev/hda", j'ai 
6.5 mo/s mais j'ai l'impression que c'est encore moinsstable ...Bon s'il 
existe une solution, ou une manière d'optimiser le truc, je suistoujours a

 Bonjour,

Je viens de télécharger et recompiler
emacs-21, pour essayer d'écrire en japonais.

Surprise, la différence est surprente par
rapport à emacs ( l'ancien) que j'ai encore.

Je tape emacs-21.1, et c'est beaucoup plus agréable
(pas d'écran gris, mais blanc..).

Je n'ai chipoté à rien.

Moralité : 2 solutions
- configurer à la main
- installer emacs 21

Yes, j'ai réussi à écrire en hiragana :-
Ouf... Comme quoi la patience ça paye.

En résumé :

- Pour lire, emacs21.1 m'a suffit ;
- Pour écire, emacs + recompilation de leim

Remarques :

- Je n'ai pas eu besoin d'autre chose 
   (mule,cana ...)

- J'ai 2 emacs d'installé que je peux lancer
l'un après, l'autre.

- Cette méthode devrait marcher sur toute
   les distributions.

- J'ai ajouté en pièce-jointe 
un couper-coller du site qui m'a 
expliqué comment écrire et lire

A/ Lire un texte en japonais

 
 Pas compliqué (  j'ai Mandrake8.0, because of X ).

Sufit juste d'avoir :

- Un texte japonais, faut bien, si tu veux lire 
  quelque chose ;-) 
 ( un couper-coller du web dans emacs, 
   fera l'affaire,même si emacs affiche des
caractères bizarres) ;

- Et de connaître la combinaison de touche
   magique,
   
  * C-x RET c euc-japan
suivi de
   * C-x C-f nom_du_fichier_à_ouvrir 


Voila, un bon début. Passons à l'écriture.

B/ Ecrire en hiragana

A mon avis un apt-get install devrait suffire 
mais j'ai quelques problèmes techniques avec
Debian ...

J'ai utilisé la méthode dure :

- Créer un répertoire /home/youssef/download
   (youssef c'est moi ;-) )

- Télecharger, compiler et installer emacs 21.1
   dans le répértoire « download »

-  Télecharger et décompresser « leim »dans
   le même répértoire 
   ( je les ai trouvé sur un mirroire de 
« gnu.org » )

- relancer «configure, make, et make install»
   pour emacs.

- Lancer « emacs-21.1 »
 
- Taper la commande « M-x set-input-method »
- Suivie de « japanese »

- Ecrire «ka» avec le clavier (belge),
   magie, magie,...


 Vous pouvez lancer un cri de joie ! 

J'ai mérité une pause avant de m'attaquer
aux katakana et kanjis.

Lire du japonais sous GNU Emacs

Ce qui suit permet de lire du japonais sous GNU Emacs, mais aussi d'autres 
langages utilisant des caractères non latins,
comme le chinois ou le russe. J'utilise SuSE 8.1.3, mais ce document 
devrait être valable pour toutes les distributions (pas
trop anciennes) de Linux. Certaines notes sont spécifiques à Debian, qui 
semble avoir un bon support pour
l'internationalisation : une grande partie des tâches décrites ci-dessous 
disparaissent avec cette distribution, et il n'y a pas
besoin de trafiquer le fichier .emacs (sauf pour les problèmes de fontset, 
évoqués plus bas). 

Polices de caractères

Voyez l'annexe sur les polices de caractères pour vérifier que vous avez les 
polices de caractères nécessaires et pour les installer si
nécessaire.

Si, malgré cela, Emacs n'affiche pas les caractères japonais, c'est qu'il 
utilise peut-être le jeu de polices par défaut, qui ne gère que des
polices basiques, et non le jeu de polices fontset-standard, qui peut traiter 
les polices japonaises. Il faut alors lui dire d'utiliser
le bon jeu de polices soit sur la ligne de commande (emacs -fn 
fontset-standard) soit par une resource X (rajouter la ligne
Emacs.font: fontset-standard dans votre fichier ~/.Xresources, et relancer X). 

Affichage du japonais dans Emacs

Vous devriez à présent être en mesure de visualiser un fichier contenant du 
japonais encodé au format EUC-JP ou ISO-2022-JP. Le
dictionnaire de Jim Breen, est au format EUC-JP (voyez la section Liens pour le 
récupérer). Utilisez la séquence suivante :

C-x RET c euc-japan C-x C-f nom_du_fichier 

C-x RET c permet de spécifier un jeu de caractères (dans cet exemple 
euc-japan) qui sera utilisé lors de la commande suivante,
c'est-à-dire ici lors de l'ouverture et de l'affichage du fichier. 

C-x RET c doit aussi être utilisé avant C-x C-s lorsqu'on souhaite sauvegarder 
un fichier dans un jeu de caractères donné. Pour plus
d'informations, voyez la section Specifying a Coding System dans la 
documentation en ligne de GNU Emacs. 

Si, au lieu de caractères japonais, vous voyez s'afficher des caractères 
européens (par exemple des guillements à la place du hiragana
ka), c'est que le buffer courant est configuré en affichage mono-octet. C'est 
sans doute dû à un conflit avec une instruction de
votre fichier d'initialisation d'Emacs (.emacs) : si vous avez mis 
(standard-display-european 1) dans ce fichier, essayez de le
supprimer. Vous pouvez aussi activer l'affichage de caractères multi-octets 
dans un buffer d'Emacs avec la commande M-x
toggle-enable-multibyte-characters

Ecrire en japonais sous GNU Emacs

Ceci s'applique à GNU Emacs 20.6. Cela demande de recompiler Emacs, ce qui 
n'est pas difficile, et c'est vraiment très agréable de
parvenir à entrer des kanjis sous Emacs. D'ailleurs, si ça se trouve, votre 
version de Emacs a été compilée avec Leim : voyez d'abord
la section Entrer des caractères japonais, et revenez à la section Installation 
de Leim si cela ne marche pas directement.

Gnucash et Euro

J'utilise actuellement la version 1.3.4 de gnucash sous potato,
malheureusement je n'arrive pas a convertir mon compte bancaire
de Francs vers Euros (malgres le changement de devise dans preferences).

Quelqu'un aurait'il par hasard sous la main une version de Gnucash
avec Euros pour la potato en .deb ?

La touche magique est « espace ».

Exemple :
- Taper « nihon » ; ( japon )
- Le nom se convertit automatiquement
   en hiragana  ; ( cf courriel précédent )
- Appuyer  sur espace
- Magie, magie :-)

- idem avec « sakana » ( poisson )

Zope et Debian

J'ai des difficultés d'accès à une partie de site sous Zope que j'ai exporté 
(Zope 2.3.2 sous win) et importé (Zope 2.4.3 sous Debian).Certaines parties 
sont inaccessibles en lecture sauf en se logant sous /manage, Zope demande une 
authentification et aucun compte n'est accepté (alors que l'accès anonymous 
devrait suffire) La partie inaccessible est en fait un produit qui contient des 
zclasses, largement inspiré de l'exemple weballage.com tiré de l'excellent 
livre de PJ Grizel . Qu'il soit largement remercié pour cet ouvrage sans lequel 
il serait bien difficile d'aborder Zope. Je suppose qu'il y a un problème de 
droits d'accès sur le répertoire où se trouvent les produits...
L'installation de Zope sous Debian semble particulière, c'est la raison pour 
laquelle je me permet de demander votre aide.

Selon ce que tu as installe, y'a p'tet aussi des trucs a sauver dans /var
(des donnees, comme /var l'indique ;-] )
Par exemple, si t'as installe mysql, pense a sauver /var/lib/mysql pour
sauver tes bases.
Si tu veux garder une trace des paquets que tu as installe, y'a
/var/lib/dpkg.
Bref, /var/lib, c'est aussi a sauver en general :)

W czym się objawia owo szukanie dysków?
Może spróbuj wyłączyć ten kanał kontrolera w BIOS-ie?

 Inna sprawa, że żeby skompilować apache'a wcale nie potrzebujesz
 serwerów tych baz, ale pakiety z ich bibliotekami i nagłówkami (np
 libmyslqlclient-dev). 

ale po co ?

No to rzeczywiście głupio...

Pewnie trzeba usunąć komendę listującą te moduły.. albo doinstalować te
pakiety i mieć to z głowy :-)

La cuestion es que me veo en la necesidad de compilar un nuevo kernel
para poder configurar mi tarjeta de sonido.
Entonces mi pregunta es cuales son los pasos basicos a cumplir para instalar 
lasfuentes de un kernel en woody y compilarlo.
Ya tengo el HOWTO correspondiente para la compilacion del kernel,pero no se los 
pasos a seguir en debian woody para instalar las fuentes en /usr/src y comenzar
mi trabajo,cualquier sugerencia,sera bienbenida.

Hola,

existen muchas formas de instalar un kernel en Debian.

1. A la manera antigua bajandote las fuentes de ftp.kernel.org y
compilandolas a palo seco ;)

2. Haciendo 'apt-cache search kernel-image', mirar la version que quieras
instalar y luego haces 'apt-get install kernel-image.'

3. Bajarte las fuentes y debianizarlo ;) con make-kpkg.

 buenas. Bueno, espero que me puedan ayudar a solucionar mi problema, les 
 cuento. El lilo, creo, apartir de la version 2.1 algo, trae la opción de 
 hacer Hidding a las particiones o cambiar dicha información a tipo de 
 partición que determinado SO, no reconozca... Siguiendo, he logrado ocultar 
 la partición, es una FAT32LBA, la cambie a una del tipo AIX, que Windows no

yo he usado Lilo y ahora GRUB pero nunca he hecho lo que estas tratando de
hacer. Lo que te puedo recomendar es una pagina muy buena es espanol

Para regresar a una versión anterior, p.ej. pasar de xscreensaver_3.33 a
xscreensaver_3.32, simplemente te bajas el paquete .deb de la versión
anterior y lo instalas con dpkg -i paquete_versionvieja.deb

Si no encuentras el ldconfig:
- Asegúrate de tener /sbin y /usr/sbin en tu PATH, p.ej. un caso
  problemático con su solución:
  # echo $PATH
  /usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin
  # export PATH=$PATH:/sbin:/usr/sbin
- Si el ejecutable 'ldconfig' _no_ está en /sbin ni en ningún sitio:
  # whereis ldconfig
  ldconfig:
  Pues corre a buscar otra potato para traerte el ldconfig de allí por
  disquete, red o como sea. Si no consigues eso estás perdido porque sin
  ldconfig no puedes instalar paquete ninguno. Sólo te queda reinstalar
  a no ser que tengas un backup.

Mi caso es parecido pero con un aula de 20. Lo que hago de momento es
usar ssh con la cuenta de root (dicen que si lo haces con ssh no es
pecado :-). Luego puedes usar una frase de paso vacía, o mejor, ssh-agent.

Para hacer la misma tarea en los 20 ordenadores, pongo un .bash_profile
como este en el /root de cada uno y luego simplemente entro en cada uno:

#!/bin/sh
rm .bash_profile
. .profile
apt-get update
apt-get install loquemeinterese

Así se hace todo sin escribir nada, y el .bash_profile se autodestruye
pues la próxima vez ya no hay que hacer nada.

Con esto voy tirando, pero hay un paquete llamado dancing shell o
algo así, que puede ser lo que buscas.

Yo creo que lo que ha pasado es lo siguiente.
Con la libc6 2.1.3 es necesario el paquete ldso que contiene el
ldconfig así como otras herramientas necesarias para el funcionamiento
de las bibliotecas de enlace dinámico. Por ejemplo, cada vez que un
paquete se instala se ejecuta el ldconfig para que busque las
bibliotecas existentes y las ponga a disposición de las apliaciones.
Si ese programa no está suele fallar la instalación.

La libc6 2.4.x trae todas las herramientas del antiguo paquete
ldso por lo que este pasa a obsoleto (oldlibs) y normalmente
puede ser desinstalado. Así que es probable que al pasar a libc4 2.4.x
desinstalaras ldso.

No estoy seguro de todo esto pero me da la impresión de que para
volver atras necesitas instalar la libc6 2.1.3 y ldso 1.9.11

Hay un campo en algun sitio de la configuracion que le tienes
que poner el id de tu clave, para que asi sepa que clave tiene
que usar para el cifrado y el firmado. No te se decir exactamente
donde esta, pero se que existe pq lo probe y me paso exactamente lo 
mismo.

A mi me pasaba lo mismo, y lo que hice fue entrar en el boot como
linux  single,  y luego quitar el xdm (o el gdm, o el kdm, o el
gestor que tengas), para que no me iniciara por defecto.
Sé que no es muy elegante, pero me funcionó. :-)))

otra alternativa es sin remover el paquete xdm, gdm o kdm.

es entrar a /etc/rc2.d
y hacer mv S99xdm .S99xdm

por lo que lo dejas oculto el script y no se inicia y si en otra oportunidad 
queres que inicie con X.

lo moves de vuelta como estaba antes.

io es la dirección base de entrada/salida
irq es la línea de petición de interrupción
etc.

No, no sé más. Lo siento pero lo mío nunca ha sido el hardware.
Esto hay dos formas de saberlo, por ensayo y error (como lo hice yo) o
preguntándole al Windows cómo lo tiene.

Algunas tarjetas funcionan sin darle parámetros y otras no.
Como dicen los ingleses, Your Mileage May Vary.

Primero una pregunta/duda:
No es en el modules.conf donde se encuntran especificados los modulos que podre
activar mediante el modconf?,en definitiva los modulos compilados como tales en
el kernel?.
Te pregunto porque en mi modules.conf no tengo(creo) cargados/especificados 
tarjetas de sonido alguna,y al ejecutar el modconf para cargar el modulo cmpci 
co
rrespondiente a mi tarjeta sin parametro alguno me figura error,lo cual me hace
pensar que este modulo no este cargado/instalado en mi actual kernel como 
modulono obstante si me puedes decir como saber los parametros requeridos por 
el modconf te lo agradecere.

La pregunta es sencilla: ¿Qué grabadoras IDE se pueden encontrar en el
mercado  (en  Canarias)  que  NO sean  soportadas  por  Linux  (kernel
2.4.14)? Supongo que si  lo que hacen es hablar SCSI  por el bus IDE
debe  haber algún  standar ¿o  cada una  tiene su  dialecto? Ya  si me
recomiendan  un buen  término  medio calidad/precio  se los  agradezco
mucho :-)

Efectivamente esto va a evitar que el xdm se inicie en el arranque, pero
no es la manera correcta de hacerlo. El Sistema V de UNIX esta muy bien
dise#ado para estos casos y es un estandar interesante de seguir. Es por
eso que Debian lo utiliza.
En el caso de los scripts en los directorios rc[0-6].d estos son links
hacia el /etc/init.d en un formato particular:
S{numero-de-dos-digitos}{nombre original} y K{num-2-digitos}{nombre
original}
Aquellos enlaces que comienzan con S seran ejecutados por el init(8) y
aquellos que comienzan con K seran detenidos (stopped) o simplemente no
ejecutados.
Debian incluye varios scrips para automatizar estos enlaces en los
diferentes runlevels; el update-rc.d(8) esta dise#ado para
crear/actualizar tales enlaces, y el rcconf(8) para
activar(S)/desactivar(K) los enlaces de una manera sencilla.
Para mas informacion en el Sistema V (cinco) de arranque puedes leer:

 por lo que lo dejas oculto el script y no se inicia y si en otra oportunidad 
 queres que inicie con X.

yo he usado Lilo y ahora GRUB pero nunca he hecho lo que estas tratando de
hacer. Lo que te puedo recomendar es una pagina muy buena es espanol

Hola,

Se me ha olvidado el nombre de un paquete que hacia algo tipo ntop pero
más ligero.

Es decir, solo me gustaría saber qué cantidad de datos salen al exterior y
cuantos entran pero sin que me cargue mucho el sistema, en plan el último
dia, última semana, etc.

Lo tengo en la punta de la lengua...

Lo más ligero que se me ocurre es que te escribas un script (en C
todavías mas ligero) que lea el fichero /proc/net/dev. Ahí tienes una
línea de texto por interface con mucha información. El bw lo usa para
mostrar el ancho de banda utilizado (es el programa que puedes obtener
en www.kernel.org, clickando sobre la barra que muestra el ancho de
banda utilizado ahí).

Instale ext3 y no tube ningun problema, la cuestion es que me creo un archivo 
.journal en el directorio raiz lo cual esta bien, pero en otro disco use una 
particion libre y cree en esa particion un external-journal para que el 
archivo .journal lo ponga en esa particion y no lo ponga en el directorio 
raiz uso tune2fs con la opcion -J que es la que sirve para cambiar los 
atributos de ext3 y no me toma los cambios el archivo .journal lo sigue 
poniendo en el mismo lugar.
Tal vez estoy interpretando algo mal.

Se você ainda tem a senha do root eh soh mudar o password com o comando 
passwd. Você ainda pode tentar descobrir a senha com força bruta. (tem 
programas desse tipo que se acha em home pages para lammers, que se dizem 
hackers, as senhas ficam criptografadas em /etc/passwd)

pronto ele vai pedir uma nova senha, e voce podera voltar a sorrir =8)
um abraacc...

sylpheed 0.6.5 e mozilla-psm

Fala pessoal,

Estou tentando instalar o sylpheed 0.6.5 mas estou tendo um erro qdo 
executo o script configure. O erro diz q o teste de GLIB falhou, o script 
procura o arquivo glib-config para fazer o teste mas o mesmo nao existe. 
Como faco para contornar este erro?


Tb estou tentando instalar o suporte a ssl do mozilla, mas na hora de 
instalar o pacote ocorre um erro de dependencia q diz q o pacote depende de 
libgtk1.2 (= 1.2.10-3) e no woody a ultima versao eh a 1.2.10-2.1.
Alguma sugestao?

sou especialista em php, mas quando precisei me virar tinha muiiita 
documenção, eu te recomendaria primeiro e PHP Manual, que tem na woody
como o pacote 'phpdoc', e o esses sites:

você está no woody? se estiver, em alguns dias o meu pacote do sylpheed 0.6.5
estará no woody (se já não está) então vá usando o que está no woody enquanto
isso =), menos trabalho... o mozilla-psm 0.9.5 (que é o pacote do mozilla
com  criptografia) já está na testing, é só baixar

os pacotes não estão relacionados com o kernel, com excessão do q for driver, quase todos os programas funcionam nos kernels atuais (a partir da versão 2.2.x). No Debian 2.2 r4 sohvem com o 2.2.19, mas jah saio até a versão 2.5 beta. kernels mais novos tão disponiveis em código fonte para download em www.kernel.org. O kernel e outros pacotes importantes estão em: http://ftp.br.debian.org/debian/dists/Debian2.2r4/main/binary-i386/base/. Pacotes do x windows estão em http://ftp.br.debian.org/debian/dists/Debian2.2r4/main/binary-i386/x11/, lá tem interfaces gráficas, xserver etc...

 Possuo um monitor LG StudioWorks 55i e estou com o debian unstable, 
 XFree 4.1.x. O problema eh com a imagem que aparece na tela, esta sempre 
 tremula, como se eu colocasse um ima perto da tela. Alterei os parametros 
 HorizSync e VertRefresh com os valores que encontrei no site da LG e mesmo 
 assim o problema ainda persiste.
 
 Por acaso alguem utiliza esse tipo de monitor ou possui alguma 
 solucao para o meu problema ?!?!?!?

Você centralizou a imagem usando o xvidtune? Eu descobri que a imagem do 
meu monitor ondula suavemente no 1/4 inferior se eu ajustar a
largura/altura
via xvidtune. Se eu usar os comandos (teclas) do monitor, não há
problema.

No meu caso eu tenho um syncmaster 15GLe.

   Notei isso há algum tempo atrás e reportei [1] como bug no BTS. Até o 
momento, o mantenedor do pacote ainda não deu uma resposta oficial. Talvez 
ajude a acelerar as coisa se você colocar um moreinfo no bug dizendo que o 
bug pode ser reproduzido e que acontece o mesmo em sua máquina. Talvez o 
Hebert não esteja dando muita atenção para isso porque foi somente uma pessoa 
que reclamou oficialmente até agora.

P.S.: Por favor, você poderia postar suas mensagens sem HTML e com um 
conjunto de caracteres que possa ser lido normalmente ?

Eu pelo menos não conheço.  Como o processo de associação só
funciona no login, somente dando logout/login.  Talvez algum dia algum
módulo PAM melhore isto.  Como as coisas no mundo *nix andam mais rápido
que a documentação que conseguimos ler, talvez isto já tenha sido feito.

Estou tendo o mesmo problema depois que compilei o 2.4.14

*** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.14/kernel/drivers/block/loop.o

Eu adicionei o suporte a loop no kernel para poder montar imagens iso, 
ainda não testei.

Com o depmod -a essa mensagem é a única coisa que aparece.

Karsten posed real answer using ar.  There is a easy way if Redhat
packaged mc (midnight commander) properly.  On my Debian box, if I fire
up:
  $ mc
and point to any package *.rpm, *.tgz, *.deb  (RH, Slack, DEB) and press
enter, I get their contents listed as if it is sub-directory.

Compiling audacity

to cyrus web site for some more digging... do you know what's the line

  ok, so currently I use method cyrus with the following line:

cyrus unix  -   n   n   -   -   pipe
  flags=R user=cyrus argv=/usr/sbin/cyrdeliver -e -m ${extension}
${user}

  but there's also following line there:

lmtp  unix  -   -   n   -   -   lmtp

  so as far as the postfix goes I should just change the:

/etc/postfix/main.cf:mailbox_transport = cyrus

  to mailbox_transport = lmtp and that's it (as far as postfix goes)?

Err, alright, so I figure out everything will be fine with my hardware
if I stick with woody, but I get ready to install and what?! No FTP
install for woody? What in the world?

So I'm going to have to install potato and then dist-upgrade? Over
dialup? :-)

If I do have to install stable, is it possible to just burn
base2_2.tgz to a CD-R under Winblows in order to load the base system
from the CD-R?

This has to do with the parent-child relationship between Unix
processes.  It affects all commands run in pipelines, not just
simple calls to `read'.  For example, piping a command's output
into a `while' loop that repeatedly calls `read' will result in
the same behavior.

Each element of a pipeline runs in a separate process, a child of
the shell running the pipeline.  A subprocess cannot affect its
parent's environment.  When the `read' command sets the variable
to the input, that variable is set only in the subshell, not the
parent shell.  When the subshell exits, the value of the variable
is lost.

IPTables / Fwbuilder - eth0 gets stuck

Hi,

To quickly set up a firewall on my Debian box i've compiled a 2.4.14 kernel 
with IPtable support and use fwbuilder to configure the script.

For some reason the policy is only installed whenever it sees fit. I'm really 
new to this whole thing and don't really have a clue where to start.

I've tried the commmands below to some succes but not allways. 

#iptables -F
#iptables -Z

Also, at some point when i the policy does not get installed anymore it's not 
possible to do an ifup/down anymore. It's not related to some running process, 
the interface just gets blocked . . . any ideas ? This is way beyond me for now.

Can someone help me ?

 maildir, then you shouldn't lose anything.

Well ... this will require some changes in local delivery (I'm using
postfix and procmail). At all places (work,notebook) I will have to
use IMAP for accessing folders (not sure but I think that pine can't
access anything else thant unix mbox). That is lots of work, but less
than writing such tool myself.

Big question is how maildir store email status? If it is stored in
separate file it should work, but if it is in same file as header and body
... still lots of questions :)

  Another problems is mailbox locking ... I'm using rsync sometimes as
  faster scp on huge files but here it can't help me :(

 I'm not sure what you mean, but maildir should take care of locking
 problems.

This mailing list is stored in mail/konference/d-user-2001 when I will
download this flat file over rsync to my notebook and new email arives
rsync will proably fail or go to infinite loop ... that was my point.

potato release 3 and dial-up user dns problem

Hi,

On one of my client's machine I installed debian potato Release 3 from the
3 CD set. However with the kernel 2.2.19-prex version there seems to be
some problem.

What happens is for the first time when I connect to the net everything is
working. nslookup, dns. But as soon as the connect is terminated, the next
time when it connects dns is not working. I am using isp's dns. The machine
is very low end hence could not afford to put up a dns server on this.
Basically this machine is only for email server. Due to the above problem
now there is problem in sending and receiving email.

Anybody faced the above problem ? What can I do so that dns works
throughout without problems ? I have got proper dns entries in
/etc/resolv.conf. (It works for the first time).

Sounds like you might have tweaked some libs.

Do you have sash installed?  This is the Stand Alone Shell -- it has no
dynamic library deps and builds-in a bunch of basic utilities (names are
prefixed with a '-', e.g.:  -ls).  Very helpful when you've fried your
system, particularly libraries, or for running from a known trusted
floppy on a compromised box.  The linker utilities (ld, ldd) aren't
included, but you might use these.  You're looking for libraries which
have changed, are corrupted, or have been deleted.  I think.

I don't think you are thinking entirely correctly.  For starters, the
terminology you used above indicates you are thinking in terms of the
Red Hat SYSV-Init schema.  Debian does it differently...the /etc/rc.d/
directory does not exist in Debian!  I suggest you read the Debian
Policy Manual on the SysV-Init stuff and explore your system (the /etc
directory) to fully understand how Debian handles the Start - Stop
initscripts on bootup.  This knowledge is a fundamental part of being
able to de-bug problems you might have in Debian, IMHO.

Most Debian packages that require some sort of start - stop
functionality come with an initscript that is automatically placed in
the /etc/init.d/ directory, AND the package will also install a set of
calls to its initscript at the appropriate run-levels AUTOMATICALLY. 
The various run-levels are controlled by the symlinks in the /etc/rc?.d/
directories, where the ? indicates run-levels from 0 to 6.  The
/etc/rcS.d/ symlinks are run once on bootup, before it jumps to your
final run-level directory.  Generally, these are prepared by the package
developer/maintainer, and work quite well for most circumstances.  You
rarely need to change anything, IMHO.  The most you should have to do is
remove some symlinks to the start-stop initscript at the runlevels you
DON'T want it to run, or add these symlinks at the levels you DO want. 
If you are not familiar with the way Debian does this, I suggest you NOT
mess with the default setup until you understand and know EXATLY what
you are doing.

In the case of the Debian SAMBA package, it too will install the proper
start-stop initscript in /etc/init.d/.  Take a look and I will bet you
will see it there, if you installed SAMBA from a deb package.  The
messages you are seeing on startup indicate you are probably using it
alreadybut I dunno for sure.

SAMBA comes with an option to be started via the start-stop
initscripts, as you are probably already doing, OR it can be run as a
daemon under inetd, and will be started upon demand.  The start-stop
method means that the nmbd and smbd daemons are running all the time and
will have a slightly faster response time.  When run in the inetd daemon
mode, it will free up a bit of memory space, but will have a slightly
slower response.  The differences are minimal, IMHO.  It makes sense to
have them up all the time if your SAMBA is acting as a WINS server for a
network of several machines, otherwise you can choose the inetd mode. 
This can be re-configured anytime by running the command sambaconfig
as root.

I hope this will get you headed in the right direction.

Unless you're using your mouse extensively under console, disable or
remove GPM.  I've found it's more trouble than it's worth.  Filing a bug

Video problem on a ASUS A1300 with woody

I've can't seem to get X to work correctly on my ASUS A1300 Laptop.  Every time 
I try to start X the screen turns black, the it starts turning white from the 
bottom right corner and continues to fill the screen.  That can't be a good 
thing.  The Video is an SIS630.  I'm running Woody, with a 2.4.14 kernel. and 
whatever the current XFree86 that is part of woody.  I seem to have everything 
else running fine.

Consider this scenario:

Program P1V1 depends on P2V1; both are installed and work fine.  Now you
install P3V2: it depends on a newer version of P2: P2V2; this gets
automatically replaced.  But P2V2 no longer works with P1V1.  What is
supposed to happen in this case?

I think this is what happenend to my system.  I tried to install
whatever was the current g77 compiler.  It required libc6-2.2.4-5; I had a
lower version, which got replaced.  But this broke (ba)sh, version 2.05-8,
which depends on libc6-2.2.3-7 or higher.  This breaks everything,
including apt and dpkg, which spawn shells all the time.

Upgrading bash first will not help, because it will not work with the old
libc6; c.q. the new libc6 will be installed first anyway because the
new bash depends on it; but then the upgrade process crashes because the
old bash doesn't work with the new bash...

The real problem is of course that the new libc is not backward 
compatible.

What can I do?

I would appreciate if someone e-mail me a libc6-2.2.3-7.so (naked i386
binary, NO .deb package - or tell me how to extract the binary from a
.deb) - hoping that just replacing the damn thing will save me.

The framebuffer device does not expose an interface to the hardware
video scaler, and software video scaling is pretty slow.  Mplayer (which
I have never used) may not be capable of software scaline.

OK, that makes sense, sort of. Allthought I recall when I set up fbtv, that
I hade to set up a resolution that matched it's desried resolution, so I
don;t believe it's actually scaleing things. Aklso in looking at it's def
in /etc/fb.modes, I note that I did not have to do anything to define it's
color depth.


 I run fbtv as fbtv -mtv and it pretty much fills the entire screen, whi=
ch
 is what I want to replicate, while playing recoded video.

TV tuners usually include their own scaling hardware, and they draw
directly into the video output.  Hence the difference.  The best
solution would be to define a video mode at the same size as the AVI
files you are playing.  I have special modes I use for playing DVDs, for
example, to match the resolution and frame rate of most films.

So, you are syaing thta my problem is with the size of the files I am
recording?

If so how can I amke the size of these, the same as the ones I'm getting
with fbtv? Or would I be better of defining a ne frame buffer mode toi
match the size: of the ones I am recording? This is all initial setup, so
I really have no exisiting files I'm interested in.

How can I set up a frame buffer def to match the size and color depth of
the files I am presenlty recording?
