Auctex/LaTeX/Emacs problem
I have lost the color markings in xemacs when I edit a LaTeX file. I am running woody and I think it happened after I updated to the new version of auctex. I noticed that when auctex installed, it said something like emacsen ignoring flavor xemacs. How do I get the color back in xemacs when it is editing LaTeX files? I really enjoyed that feature. mysterious kernel panic at start up and it's workaround
I upgraded my kernel using the prepackaged 2.4.17 pentium pro kernel. On bootup, I get the following message: Request_module[block-major-3] Root fs not mounted VFS: Cannot open root device "303" or 03:03 Please append a correct "root=" boot option Kernel panic: VFS: unable to mount root fs on 03:03 The funny thing is that if I use the append root=/dev/hda3 in lilo.conf, it doesn't work. However if I load the debian rescue disk and specify root=/dev/hda3, the kernel boots fine. Why won't it just boot? I've partitioned my drive to use /dev/hda1 as /boot and /dev/hda3.

It'll error out the burn when it hits the capacity encoded on the CD (use 'cdrecord -atip' to read the encoding on the media). I've seen utilities for Windows that claim to be able to tell whether the drive supports overburning, but they're not always accurate... for instance, Nero claims that my NEC 7700A is overburnable and it isn't, both according to the manufacturer's spec sheet and my own experience. ^_^ Because of this, I recently replaced it with a LG-4102B that definately IS (I know because I've been overburning 80 min CD's and writing 90 minute ones) plus it's also a DVD. You could always just buy 80 minute CD's. -- Marc Wilson [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://members.cox.net/msw

Debian Perl packages, modules - how to cleanup extras
What's Debian's procedure for installing and maintaining perl? At the beginning, dselect insisted that packages for perl-5.004 and perl-5.005 be installed. Re: internet connection - was: solved: CS4236 ...
Just got home from work ... thanks for your reply ... ---Original Message--- to check that all of your installed apps are properly configured, do dpkg -C This gives me a new prompt after about two seconds. Nothing more. and post the results of that. there may be something else that screwed up. if the command above runs cleanly, bringing you back to a prompt without error messages, then everything is in order, as far as what's been installed so far is concerned. if you can't ping your nameserver, then you're not going to get anything out of whois, either. whois would return domain name registration info for whatever address you give it. for instance, here's a smidge of what whois tells me about whidbey.net: Administrative Contact: Denka, Mike (MD135) [EMAIL PROTECTED] WhidbeyNet 14888 SR 525 Langley, WA 98260 US (360) 341-0009 doesn't really matter, right now, though. Interesting! I'll explore this further once I'll be online again. Thanks for the demonstration! it also doesn't matter that you use wvdial--it's a fine dialer; there are many others, as well, but the point is it's not going to be the cause of the kind of problem you're having. are you using the same machine to send mail to the list. No, I'm using my girlfriend's M$-ME-computer to write to the list. Both are networked (LAN). Normally we use the Linux box as a router. Btw, both computers use the same phoneline, so, right now I have to disconnect the one to use the other and vice versa. This shows that the phoneline is okay. I can ping at least the first nameserver from Windows. So, that confirms, that nameserver and IP are so far okay, right? if so, then you're connection is staying alive, so it's not that. that you're not getting a fast answer to your problem is due to the fact that it's mighty weird what's going on there. check /etc/network/interfaces. on my system, the important part of it looks like this: auto lo iface lo inet loopback I didn't have "auto lo", added it, but it didn't make any difference. :-( if yours doesn't, then that could be the source of the problem. try to think of what is different about the new installation, and start making notes of anything you may have been unsure about in the course of the initial configuration. I'll certainly do so with the next install. Good idea! are there any alternative dns ip's available at your isp; ie, can you be certain that the isp isn't having a dns problem right now, or may even have changed their dns servers? it has been know to happen. I called them yesterday, and they claimed nothing has changed on their side. are you sure that you're dialing into the right number? are there optional numbers that you can try? is there anyone you can call who uses the same setup to connect to the web to check that? this actually happened to me--i had the last digit wrong by one; the call was answered by a modem and i thought i was connected but couldn't get anywhere. in fact, you should also check /etc.wvdial.conf to make sure that you have the right baud setting for the modem you're dialling into. Yes, I double checked phone # and baud rate, compared with the other computer's config. Everything okay here. wvdial gives me at the end: PPP session from (some-IP-address) to some-IP-address beginning "lots of weird keystrokes" --> PPP negotiation detected. --> Starting pppd at date time Does this look okay to you? As far as I remember it was the same when it actually worked with the last install. I can ping both of those IP-addresses which I assume are the dynamic addresses for my, and the remote system? the main thing is, don't get hung up on what you can't do. focus more on the fact that there is, however elusive, a logical reason behind the problem, and its solution is going to involve a wealth of understanding that can't be bought by any other means than having the problem in the first place. it's a good lesson. That's an interesting way to see it! ;-) Yes, you're certainly right. Anyway, I'm tempted to suggest a complete new install. This might get things straight, but then I (we) will never get to know what the problem was. This is the part I don't like about the idea. What's your opinion? by the way, you live in one of my favorite parts of the world. if i could, i'd be living on orcas, sucking in that chlorophyl. What keeps you from doing so? The Pudget Sound is the most beautiful area I ever saw. I just hope the INS will allow me to stay here! Klaus

How to overburn CD's?
Hi, I am trying to create an audio CD... trouble is that it runs to about 76 minutes in length and the blank CD's that I have are only the standard 74 minute versions. I have heard about overburning, but a search on google for "overburn linux" seems to bring up one reference - namely to the CD-writing FAQ, where it just says that cdrecord can handle overburning without doing anything special. Checking out the cdrecord website, I cannot find any reference to overburning. I don't understand how to use cdrecord from the commandline, so I normally use either KreateCD or xcdroast - but neither of these has an option to overburn a CD, and either flatly refuse to try, or fail after writing 74 minutes worth of music. My computer can burn cd's fine if I'm not trying to do this. Does anyone have any idea what I am doing wrong, and how I can overburn a cd? -- Jason Wood Persistance is a virtue

gnome-session multiple apps startup
I just installed gnome-session and when I did I start getting multiple apps opening up at startup. Before I had one instance of xdaliclock opening up. Now I have four. A few other apps do this as well. Instead of one opening up 2-3 open up. What should I do to stop this from happening? I right click on a function call in the source code, and I get a pop-up list of all objects and methods that call it. This list is in a treeview, so I can see full dependency information. If the method I chose is overloaded, or the class in question has multiple inhertance it may add a list to allow me to refine the search before I get the dependency tree. Not only that, but I can then open a file up the 'stack hierarchy' at exactly the line where the method (or it's referrer) is called. Now, to be even more cool, if I do exactly the same thing in the 'Object Browser' window I can navigate in the other direction. (ie who this method calls, who they call etc etc all in a treeview.) This is incredibly useful when re-factoring legacy code, or when checking that a new name/method doesnt hide another name we need. ctags doesnt cut it, it's not good enough for C++ as far as I can tell - it doesnt understand the C++ language, although it is great for C. And having had a look at Eclipse I cant be bothered at this point to work out how to make the damn thing run properly. I suspect it wants an entire JDK installation under it's own directory!! If you know a way to get Ctags or some other tagging system to play nice please let me know. Even better if it integrates with Emacs. The output from 'getent' seems to be correct. The 'strace' output is weird: > open("/etc/passwd", O_RDONLY) = 3 > fcntl(3, F_GETFD) = 0 > fcntl(3, F_SETFD, FD_CLOEXEC) = 0 > fstat(3, {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=1251, ...}) = 0 > old_mmap(NULL, 4096, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) > = 0x40016000 > _llseek(3, 0, [0], SEEK_CUR)= 0 > read(3, "root:Xy13e.n9hX7WU:0:0:root:/roo"..., 4096) = 1251 Hmmm, it seems that your /etc/passwd contains your encrypted root password. If I 'strace passwd' on my computer (running sid), I never get a line like that, always 'root:x:0:0:...". It doesn't even seem to open '/etc/shadow', I don't understand. XFree86 hangs / How to use Xfree 4.2.0
Hi ! My X-Server hangs sometimes. I can still move the mouse, but the cursor stays in its last state. It doesn't react on any keypresses, except the allmighty Alt-SysRq-S U B, which is the only way to reboot without risking a looong fsck. I'm using Debian sid, currently with X 4.1.0. I have a Sony Vaio PCG-F403 with a Neomagic 256AV video card. I thought, maybe this very annoying error might go away if I upgrade to X 4.2.0. So, Is it safe to use the newest version from www.xfree86.org or would I confuse or even break apt-get,dselect,dpkg & co. ? Or has anybody had this problem, too, and found a cure ? Thx for any help... Martin -- // /* Martin Emrich*/ /* [EMAIL PROTECTED]/ //

kernel broadcasting needed when upgrading to CUPS 1.1.12-5 ??
Hi, When upgrading my woody system from CUPS 1.1.12-4 to 1.1.12-5, the library libslp1 1.0.6-3 was installed. libslp1 (OpenSLP) requires broadcasting, and for this route to be added: route add -net 224.0.0.0 netmask 240.0.0.0 dev Why do I need an "IETF standard protocol (RFC 2608) that is used to discover/advertise services on the network"? Is this so that other machines can see that I have an available printer? Something like with Windows Network Neighborhood? Printing still works, so not having that rould must not be affecting me too much... Thanks ++ | Ron Johnson, Jr.Home: [EMAIL PROTECTED]| | Jefferson, LA USA http://ronandheather.dhs.org:81| || ! MY incorrect assumption was that since I > was rebuilding mostly the same kernel, I shouldn't have an issue to reuse > the old modules. Well, that was wrong. This is usually due to different "set version information on all modules" (or whatever CONFIG_MODEVERSIONS is called) setting in old/new kernel. Fixed by "mv /lib/modules/$VERSION /lib/modules/$VERSION.old" before installing new kernel. Those warnings are there for a reason, and now you know what the reason is. > Worse, I can't get make-kpkg modules_install to work. Using Amanda client software, via Debian package.
After years of recomending to people that they build amanda from source, instead of trying to us the Debian packages, I find myslef trying to do just that. So, how is this suposed to work? sysvinit; cleaning
I had a problem at boot time yesterday that I had never seen before. Since the California energy-`crisis' I typically shut down at the end of the day's work. When I re-booted yesterday morning, everything went as normal until bootmisc.sh began to clean out the /tmp directory. At that point, the system hung and refused to respond to any keyboard input. I left it in that state for more than 10 minutes, then, not knowing what else to do, I powered down and rebooted. The re-boot was completely normal except that fsck was called to check the partitions that had been mounted and then not cleanly unmounted when I powered down. /tmp is not on its own partition, so I don't think that the problem had to do with mounting. I can think of no reason why there would have been anything strange or unusual in /tmp from the previous day's activities. I've gone through kern.log, syslog and so on but not found any relevant messages. I've also looked in the bug-list for sysvinit and not seen anything very similar there. Has anyone seen this kind of thing before? Thanks for any help. I decided to try Browse-X, and I have been taking a look at how it handles my local files. It doesn't take too long to load itself, or some local documents, but it duplicates the address in the links. If the address is file:///usr/share/doc/foo.html in the file, it is interpreted as file:///usr/share/doc/foo.html/usr/share/doc/foo.html. Re: Duplicating installed system
fine. Again lilo complains about invalid /dev/hda1 (dos partition). But it can be mounted. So, I just commented out and ran lilo. No complaints now. But while booting it just stops and says, Kernel panic: I can't find a root and I want to scream. Everything is there. Checked the /etc/fstab and all other places. I guess the problem is that the root disk on the new system is not on the same partition as it was on the old system. Either the kernel itself knows where the root fs is, and in that case you have to tell it with rdev where it is, or you have to tell it in lilo.conf. The kernel has to know from where to mount root. /etc/fstab can't be read before the root filesystem is mounted, so it has to be told in another way (lilo.conf or rdev). /Hacker

I wouldn't like to trash the single-disk install >too... What I did was get everything running in RAID mode except for /boot. I compeletly RAIDed the root, swap, and other partitions except for /boot. I rebooted and had everything but /boot running in RAID mode with the 'failed-disk' changed to 'raid-disk' and synced with the 'raidhotadd' command. This includes updating /etc/fstab and lilo.conf. In lilo.conf you need to point 'root=' to the RAID device and run lilo to update stuff, but don't change the 'boot=' field yet. You need to do the fstab and lilo update before rebooting. Once this was all working, I then did the RAID conversion on /boot. The steps I took for /boot where: 1) Shutdown 0 (to get to single user mode). 2) Copy /boot to /dev/md0 (I created md0 when I created the other RAID devices). 3) Umount old /boot 4) Mount /dev/md0 as /boot 5) Edit /etc/fstab to point /boot at the RAID device. 6) Edit lilo.conf to point /boot at the RAID devivce, add the 'raid-extra-boot' line with BOTH devices. 7) Run lilo -vt (testing) and see if everything looks okay. 8) Then I ran lilo -v . 9) Reboot. 10) Once the system was up and running I finished the RAID conversion of /boot. 10a) Once the RAID conversion of /boot was done I ran lilo -v again. I don't think this is needed, but I did it anyways. This worked for the first time for me. Unlike what is documented in the HOWTO for booting from a RAID, which created an unbootable system :-( . For the above to work you need the latest lilo version (22.1) so check that before starting down this road. --John [EMAIL PROTECTED]

(`/') > ># > >root=/dev/md2 Thanks John. Now bear with me for a while... I've got this setup: /boot on /dev/md1 (/dev/sda1 and /dev/sdb1) root on /dev/md2 (/dev/sda2 and /dev/sdb2) I've got a normal single-disk installation on /dev/sdb. I've marked all the partitions on /dev/sda as "failed-disk" in /etc/raidtab. So the RAID is running in degraded mode, until I manage to boot into it. Then I'll change the entries to "raid-disk" and raidhotadd the partitions. This is fairly standard procedure, I understand; you install a single-disk system, start RAID arrays which include partitions on the disk with the system on it as "failed-disk", clone the system into the arrays, make the RAID system bootable, boot into it, mark the "failed" partitions as "raid" and raidhotadd them. I have done this successfully a number of times with kernel 2.2 and the older lilo. Now to keep my single-disk system bootable, I guess from what you write that I need to put this in /etc/lilo.conf: --- # device with /boot filesystem boot=/dev/md1 # MBR's to which lilo will be installed; omit /dev/sdb # until the RAID system is bootable raid-extra-boot=/dev/sda # device with root filesystem root=/dev/md2 --- And then, once the RAID system is bootable, install the MBR to /dev/sdb as well: # MBR's to which lilo will be installed raid-extra-boot=/dev/sda, /dev/sdb Am I getting this right? I wouldn't like to trash the single-disk install too... Best regards, George
