Re: no sound on Sarge

2004-08-18 Thread David Baron
Alsa sound initializes to muted. Yup. Run one of the alsa mixers (alsamix,
aslamixgui, etc) and raise the volumes as required, see if this works).

There is a bug on latest sid and these setting, which used to be saved and
restored, are now lost. So each login, you may need to repeat until this is
fixed.

The "uid" must be numeric; I don't know how to use the "iocharset" option.

Mouse works with X but breaks as a left-handed...

2004-08-18 Thread Carlos Duque
Hi,

I'm a newbie with Debian, but not so much with Linux.. My problem is that my
wheelmouse works fine with X but it goes crazy when I change it to left-handed (kde or
gnome). The middle button stops working and the other two show me the menu.

I checked the XConfig86-4 but seems fine, I even tried one generated by Knoppix which
worked with knoppix, but it doesn't seem to work with Debian...

I would appreciate any help...

Creative Commons Metamorphosis

2004-08-18 Thread David Palmer
There's a new style of licence happening at Creative Commons.
It is typified by the policy of attempting to meld closed and open
source, particularly in relation to software.
Is this where this project was heading all along?
This same proposition is one that has been previously touted by such
entities as Microsoft.

http://creativecommons.org/weblog/entry/4368
Since when have the products of open source been unavailable to the
commercial sphere anyway?
Ventures of this nature have the potential to cloud the middle ground,
and compromise the legal status of standards such as the GPL. This may
well be the strategy involved.

David.

Yes.

Type something like:

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

Replace xserver-xfree86 with the package in question.

(Obviously you'll need to be root)

in which case, you can add sshd into /etc/hosts.allow

Securing SSH: How to enable FAIL_DELAY?

2004-08-18 Thread Ralph Katz
In trying to further tighten-up SSH, I'd like to enable FAIL_DELAY that
I see in /etc/login.defs but has no effect in ssh. I'm running ssh
3.8.1p1-8 and have already disabled RootLogin and enabled MaxStartups.

From /etc/login.defs:
# Delay in seconds before being allowed another attempt after a login
failure
FAIL_DELAY 5

I see nothing like it in /etc/ssh/sshd_config.
How can FAIL_DELAY be enabled for ssh?
Thanks.

Same thing in kppp, it works as long as I set the speed to 9600.  With these

For good measure, here is the result of cat /proc/interrupts.  Perhaps there
is a problem with IRQ 23 being used by something else but getting assigned to

Yes, linux.debian.user etc. is too big for comfort for me too, therefore,
I just monitor

the key is to send to [EMAIL PROTECTED], the only good way
to post, no need to subscribe.

To prove it works, let's just Cc this message there, exposing your
e-mail to spam harvesters, but surely you use spamassassin already.

Nori,
I've been reluctant to apt-get upgrade for the same reasons; not wanting
to deal with the fallout of 500 new versions! Also I see there are
problems in some new packages that work fine for me now, like firefox
and thunderbird/enigmail. I am aware of the security limitations in
current versions and try to act accordingly.

In fact, I've never done the apt-get upgrade. Since installing Debian
in November, I've carefully upgraded packages I wanted and all the
relevant security updates by apt-get install and being
careful to check for appropriate dependencies and update those too.
Yes, I may have missed some. I plan to "upgrade" to sarge for the
lagging packages after it's released as Stable.

You can always see the latest security alerts right on www.debian.org or
subscribe to debian-security-announce without having to wait for the
weekly news.

Regards.

you have to remove kmplayer, which is not part of debian.
dpkg -P kmplayer

if you want kmplayer:
you can get the sources for kmplayer and remove all references to
x-ms-wma.desktop and x-ms-wmv.desktop (use grep -r )
these sources are ready for debian, so
dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot should make you corrected .deb packages.

Firstly open up the rc file for your inetd (e.g. /etc/inetd.conf) and
comment out any lines you don't need. This should do (at least)
discard, echo, daytime.

Then, determine which programs are responsible for the remaining open
ports. Stop them from running and prevent them from starting by
default if necessary. How to do this varies on an
application-to-application basis; but can probably be forced by
removing the package in question (if you aren't using it at all) or
using update-rc.d (I think).

If a port is open, and associated with a program which isn't from a
debian package and you don't believe you put it there yourself - its
time to consider the possibility your machine has been compromised.

Section 9.9 of the Debian policy has this to say about environment
variables:

--

9.9. Environment variables
--

A program must not depend on environment variables to get reasonable
defaults. (That's because these environment variables would have to
be set in a system-wide configuration file like `/etc/profile', which
is not supported by all shells.)

If a program usually depends on environment variables for its
configuration, the program should be changed to fall back to a
reasonable default configuration if these environment variables are
not present. If this cannot be done easily (e.g., if the source code
of a non-free program is not available), the program must be replaced
by a small "wrapper" shell script which sets the environment variables
if they are not already defined, and calls the original program.

Here is an example of a wrapper script for this purpose:
  #!/bin/sh
  BAR=${BAR:-/var/lib/fubar}
  export BAR
  exec /usr/lib/foo/foo "$@"

Furthermore, as `/etc/profile' is a configuration file of the
`base-files' package, other packages must not put any environment
variables or other commands into that file.

Last time I experienced something like this the rtl8139 was faulty

I had loads of fun reading it, as did a few of my colleagues. I have to
admit I first dissmissed it due to its title, until I realised they

I read the /. thread on this as well; I don't know which I found funnier -
the article itself, or the number of people who didn't RTFA (that pie chart
was a dead giveaway, and cracked me up completely) and made hge posts
detailing how Immunity's conclusion was flawed, and then the battle between
the mods who did and didn't get it. Ah, good clean fun at MS's expense :)

Strange mine shows this:
:00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. 82801EB/ER
(ICH5/ICH5R) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02)
It's working fine!
Heres my lsmod output to compare:
snd_intel8x0   33068  0
snd_ac97_codec 59268  1 snd_intel8x0
snd_pcm85412  2 snd_pcm_oss,snd_intel8x0
snd_timer  23172  2 snd_seq,snd_pcm
snd_page_alloc 11144  2 snd_intel8x0,snd_pcm
gameport4736  1 snd_intel8x0
snd_mpu401_uart 7296  1 snd_intel8x0
snd_rawmidi23232  1 snd_mpu401_uart
snd_seq_device  7944  3 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_rawmidi
snd50148  12
snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi_event,snd_seq,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,
snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_mpu401_uart,
snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_device
i810_audio 30356  1
ac97_codec 16908  1 i810_audio
soundcore   9824  3 snd,i810_audio
Slightly different!

Are you using ALSA or ARTS for sound output?
If it's ALSA the driver might be bugged check the alsa site for details on
how to fix it. I remember that there is also one channel you have to
disable in KMix to make it work. Had a similar problem with a mates box
using Fedora Core II IIRC. I also think that channels are switched too you
might have to increase the volume somewhere else than the volume channel.

UML question

2004-08-18 Thread Magnus Therning
I am trying to get a user-mode-linux (UML) kernel running. However, the
kernel won't boot. Just at the end of the boot sequence 'init' complains
about the getty's respawning too fast and decides to pause them for 5
minutes. So, I never get to the login prompt... any ideas? hints?

Linux kernel version 2.6.3 (with patch 2.6.3-rc2-1 applied).

I've tried it with both a root file system I built myself (using
debootstrap to get a Sid root_fs) and one I downloaded off the UML site
(the Woody one). Both give me the same result :-(

Typical problems are:

- no write access to audio device files
Add yourself to the audio group, log out and in again

- volume set to 0, channels muted
Install and use mixer (e.g. amix)

Also check dmesg to see if the device driver reports any errors when it
is loaded.

Is the new installer creating too small a / partition?

2004-08-18 Thread stan

Sorry if this is a repeat, I sent it several hours ago, and never saw it
come back.

I built a machine over the weekend using the new installer. I installed
unstable on it, and set it up as a ltsp server, whch required adding a
small amount of data to the root filesystem (/tftpdir). I used all of a 40G
drive, and took the default "multiuser" partioning, with all partions
reisefs (except /tmp, which I set to EXT2).

This morning I did an apt-get update ; apt-get dist-upgrade. This required
upgrading from the 2.4.26 kernel to the 2.4.27 kernel. This failed because
there was not enough room in / for both kenels.

I was able to squeak by (this time) by moving the /tftpdir stuuf off of /,
but this reuslted in (transiently) a 99% full root parition.

I wou;d sugest that the default partion sizes be change to leave more room
in the root partition for such things.

Am I missisng something here?

The permissions on the device file are not important. They do not
influence the permissions of the files on the mounted file system, and
the user does not even need read access to the device file because
mount is suid root by default. In fact even with permissions set to 000
it should still work. I think the umask, uid and gid parameters are
what NiL needs.

Re: All these open ports

2004-08-18 Thread Mike Ward
Generally speaking, to close a port, you shut down whatever deamon is
listening on it. For example, if you had port 80 open, and want to
close it, shut down your web server (apache or whatever else).

Same with ssh - to close that port, shut down sshd.

It means nothing worth logging happened during these 20 minutes.
Syslog adds these lines to let you know it's working fine (otherwise
you could suspect the lack of messages means syslog is somehow broken).

no sound on Sarge

2004-08-18 Thread michael . sherman
Hi all.

I have installed Sarge (2.6 kernel) on one of my machines and I get no
sound. The sound card is onboard, here is the line generated by the lspci
command
- :00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. 82801AA AC'97 Audio
(rev 02)

and I also did the lsmod to see if modules for sound are loaded
i810_audio 30228 0
ac97_codec 16908 1 i810_audio
soundcore 9696 2 snd,i810_audio

what could it be?
Thanks in advance

A local archive is a good idea. Check out what is going on with apt-cache
policy .
There you can see the preferences used by apt. Maybee you can tune
/etc/apt/preferences and pin your packages in the local archive with a pin
priority over 1000. Therefor you need a Release file in your local archive.
See man apt_preferences

This message seems to have gone into the mailing list bit bucket, so I'm
resending it. All help appreciated.

I'm bringing up a laptop on Debian sarge. I've created the hardwired network
profile and wanted to save it. The problem is that I can't find scpm
anywhere. It's not on my computer, and "apt-cache search scpm" returns
nothing.

Either it's done a different way here, or I'm really looking in the wrong
place. Can someone point out where I'm going wrong?

A vfat partition doesn't have the ability to set permissions the way Linux
does; it's kinda primitive. When you mount the partition, you have to give
the ownership/groupname. I have my Windows partition mounted as follows:

/dev/hda1 /windows vfat users,gid=users,umask=0002,iocharset=utf8 0 0

Note that the gid is set at this point, it's then available for use by all
members of that group.

This is described in "man syslog" oddly enough, and all it means is
that syslog is still running and monitoring. It's useful if you find
a long delay in your logs, and want to ensure syslog is still alive.
It cam be turned off. See the man page.

What does:

Tárgy: 2 questions: 1., ipfwadm, 2., local net with rtl8139

hi!

1., I' d like to use ipmasquerading to share the internet,
but i have
problem with it. I have installed the following modules into
the kernel

  IP: Netfilter Configuration  --->
 Connection tracking (required for masq/NAT)
   FTP protocol support
   IRC protocol support
IP tables support (required for filtering/masq/NAT)
   Packet filtering
   Full NAT
 MASQUERADE target support
   Packet mangling
 ipchains (2.2-style) support
 ipfwadm (2.0-style) support

(certainly i don' t use the last two).

All other modules can be loaded with success.
I use 2.4.26 kernel, and if i load all modules, i got this:

"
router:~# lsmod

eth0 is the interface to the internet, and eth1 is for the
local net.

>>>The problem come, if i try to use the following command:<<<

"

ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT
"

then i got this error message (error code: 1):
"
iptables: No chain/target/match by that name

I tried to loose the problem with google, but nothing could
help. Certainly
i made these:

"
echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_dynaddr
"

Distro: debian

---

2., the second problem is, that i have in this router
machine two
ethernetcard (rtl8029, and 8139). the 8029 works fine, but i
use 8139too
driver for the other one. If i try to copy(ftp) _to_ the
router, everything
works fine with about 2MByte/s (the router is a PI 100MHZ,
so it' s good for
it), but in the other direction (from the router to another
machine) i can
copy only with 2-300KByte/s.

In the kernel (2.4.26) i compiled this as modules:
"
RealTek RTL-8139 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter support
",
and compiled these into the kernel:
"
Use PIO instead of MMIO
Support for uncommon RTL-8139 rev. K (automatic channel equ...
"

I tryed all combination of the last two.

The cabel length is about 20m.

Both of the Distros are Debian;

Thans very much for your help.

Problems with mounting vfat in Debian

2004-08-18 Thread NiL SpaaR
Hi all,
A Linux-newbie speaking here and am a bit frustrated by the fact i
cannot get a vfat mounted properly.

I've added this line to my /etc/fstab "/dev/hdb1 /home/nil/redmond
vfat defaults,user 0 0"
I can mount it with the user but can only access it with root
I mount (as nil) with : "mount /dev/hdb1"
The ownership of the folder redmond bfor mounting is nil, but when the
partition is mounted the ownership has changed 2 root. I cannot change
the ownership of the folder with : chown nil redmond cause i get "chown:
changing ownership of `redmond': Operation not permitted" as a reply

Can anyone plze help this newbie on the right track?

Type fc-cache -f as root if you haven't tried that already, might make a
difference.

XFree86 uses 75% of CPU, it takes 30 seconds to open an application

2004-08-18 Thread J F

XFree86 uses 75% of CPU when opening a new Konqueror
or any new application.
Now I have a way I like to use KDE, 16 desktops labeled
alphabetically from a to z. I know mail is on desktop
"M". Konqueror with Yahoo is on desktop "Y".
I start up with about 16 Konqueror windows and
a netscape window and 4 consoles.

Anyhow, it takes from 30 to 60 seconds to open
a new konqueror window or any application.
The reason is XFree86 uses 75% of CPU according to
top.
I have a Athlon 1700xp with a 512MB and 256MB
PC133 memory with a Kaiser S305-32A
video card (32MB memory on video card).

Any way to get XFree86 not to hog CPU time?
Am I the only person having this slowness?

Thanks,
J

Working through kdelibs-data update on Debian Sid

2004-08-18 Thread Charlie Zender
Hi,
I am having problems updating my Debian Sid system (MEPIS, actually).
The system has been running fine and updates worked well for months
until a few days ago when I encountered a problem with kdelibs-data.
I've now put the system into a state where kdelibs-data will not
install, not even with apt-get -f install, and not with apt-get
--fix-missing dist-upgrade. This appears to keep many other packages
from installing/updating as well. Any hints how to proceed?
Thanks,

Re: mozilla doesn't load

2004-08-18 Thread tat
Hello i woud like to catch on that thread, because i got a simular problem.
I used debian sarge on an diskless installation and have problems to run
Mozilla or Mozilla-Firebird, some dayes earlyer i installed the woody
realease and had the same problems. Then i tried other aplications also
some different browsers, they run whithout problem. So i'm sure that's an
mozilla specific problem.
To answer the questions from the last mail:

1) The process exits on its own and no mozilla-firebird regarding
prozesses are left(at least most of the times).

3) Error message: The error messages tells basically that it don't finds
the locale file's in /var/lib/mozilla-firefox/locales.d,
It is empty because all clients got different /var directories on the
master and they where not syncronist, but at least the directory
/var/lib/mozilla-firebird/locales.d where created, i found that a bit
weard but unless i think the locales are not the mainbroplem i think
that's not so important and is more a diskless problem.
After i coppied the specific file there, i got no more error
when i run firefox, but when i stard the browser whith mozilla-firefox i get

(process:1368): Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library.
Using the fallback 'C' locale.

still no browser appears on my screen!!

is it possibill that mozilla has to write on the root filesystem which is
ro mounted??
here are my mounts:
/ nfs ro
/home nfs rw
/var nfs rw
/var/lib/dpkg nfs ro
/tmp nfs rw

Delayed mails on debian-user [Now mostly fixed]

2004-08-18 Thread Pascal Hakim
Hi,

A number of people have commented about not getting mail from
the debian-user list. There should not be nearly as many delays in
getting mail for most users now.

Delays were caused on this list by the high number of gmail
subscribers, which caused some gmail servers to start teergrubing
lists.debian.org.

Unforunately, gmail users will probably continue to suffer for
a while until all problems are resolved.

Cheers,

Pasc (still with his listmaster hat on)

Debian configures X11 (by default) to not accept internet connections.

You'll need to remove "-nolisten tcp" from your display mangler's conf
file.

Quick grep:

   stefan:~$ grep -Flri nolisten /etc/X11/
   /etc/X11/X
grep: warning: /etc/X11/app-defaults/app-defaults: recursive directory loop
   /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc
   /etc/X11/gdm/factory-gdm.conf
   /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf
   /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers

Note: X11 has a number of security problems with going over a network.
  ssh forwarding is recommended...

If I've got to do this the old-fashioned way, it's OK, but...

When I was running the Debian installer, it recognized both my LAN cards (the

I want to create a profile with the wireless card. Is there a way to get the

Read http://www.linux.com/howtos/Remote-X-Apps-6.shtml

Right there on top it says:

"Notice that some X servers (from XFree86) can be configured not to
listen on the usual TCP port with the -nolisten tcp argument. Notably
the default configuration of Debian GNU/Linux is to disable the X server
listening on the TCP port. If you wish to use remote X on a Debian
system, you should re-enable this by altering the way the X server is
started. Look at /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc for a start."

There's some additonal simple debugging info as well.

You should use ssh with X11forwarding. Using Xhost is the worst
thing you can do, since anyone can connect to your machine, and none
of it is encrupted. Therefore, you should run sshd (the daemon) on
machine B, and edit the file:

/etc/ssh/sshd_config

Find within that:

X11Forwarding no

and replace 'no' with 'yes'. Then restart sshd on machine B. From
machine A, do:

ssh -X machineB

login, and then run xterm. Voila.

X11 forwarding not enabled in ssh server config on B, or not enabled in
ssh client config on A. Read

man sshd_config
man ssh_config

Look for "ForwardX11" and "X11Forwarding".

security updates

2004-08-18 Thread Nori Heikkinen
hey,

reading the debian weekly news, i noticed a couple packages that i
have installed with newly-discovered security holes in them. the
newsletter says about these packages "you know the drill." well, i
don't ...

reading up on security on the security FAQ, i see that just upgrading
to a higher version number isn't the answer, as security fixes are
backported to the same version. i have the relevant security lines in
my /etc/apt/sources.list, so i guess i'd just need to do an apt-get
upgrade to fix this?

thing is, i haven't done this in a long while, and not only does apt
want to upgrade over 500 packages on my system, i don't have enough
space in /var for it to do this.

so, what's the Right Way of getting the security patches to these
packages, besides apt-get upgrading? is there one? [1] seems to
imply that the right way is the way i can't do ...

thanks very much,

XMMS/ALSA - how to get mono output?

2004-08-18 Thread Shot
Hello.

I found out today that something bad happened to the left speaker of
my laptop, so I'm trying to make XMMS output mono for the time being.
Unfortunately, I can't find the relevant option (neither in XMMS's
setting, nor in ALSA's; Google's all about the reverse problem). How
can I set ALSA (preferably) or XMMS to output mono instead of stereo?

I'm using the following package versions (sid's newest):
xmms 1.2.10-1, alsa-base 1.0.5a-2, alsa-utils 1.0.5-3.

Cheers,
