Which may explain why I am having trouble understanding how to install

instructions on various websites concerning dpkg, and I keep getting

First, Gak! Opera! Get a real browser! duck!

Second, what kind of errors are you getting?

Opera is a good browser. I use Konqueror, Firefox, and Opera because each one
has its advantages. I sometimes get better performance from Opera than from
Firefox and sometimes Firefox is better. I don't think any of the browsers
used with Linux is the best all-around. Maybe I am doing something wrong ;)

Or you have a short attention span. :o) When I'm at work, I've become so
accustomed to KDE that Windows is painful to use, largely due to the lack of
Konqueror and Kontact. Explorer's a buggy, insecure, slow joke and I really
would rather have my skin flayed than the poor imitation of a real PIM that

Re: upgrade problem

2005-09-23 Thread Filipus Klutiero

Hi Kai,
more useful or compact than apt-cache show would be $ apt-cache policy perl
However you apt-cache show seems to indicate you have a sarge/sid mix.
Since apt-get install perl indicates your perl is up-to-date for your
default release, I don't see why apt-get upgrade would be upgrading it
directly. What could happen on dist-upgrade in a mix is that a package
that you have installed which isn't part of stable is ignoring the
stable upgrade path and going to, say, sid (unless for example you
pinned testing higher, but you seem to have no etch sources). This
should be investigated. One efficient way to do it would be to use $
apt-show-versions -u|grep unstable
However, you said that the problem seems to be with Perl. Could you
indicate what makes you think that? Unless it's just that you're
surprised that install won't upgrade it but dist-upgrade does? If so
then really try the suggestion above.

But in case you already eliminated that possibility, I'd point you to
the APT HOWTO's section 3.5 suggestion of using
Debug::pkgProblemResolver=yes

I don't know how to manage this problem, if I need install another font
 package or setting the .xpdfrc

You know, xpdf's man page *does* describe exactly how to configure the
fonts it uses.

Yes, but my point is, you're asking people to *not* do exactly what you're
doing. Then there's the comically ironic explanation as to why you shouldn't
followup to what you're following up to...

Sometimes, Windows calls the SMB hostname the computer name. Outside of SMB
(and by extension, Windows), this distinction does not exist.

Solaris boxes make the distinction, I believe.
They have a computer name, and they have a hostname for each
NIC/network/zone (a 'zone' being somewhat like a virtual machine).

Are you just trying to get a client to work, or a server? The client
should just work assuming you can make outgoing connections through
your firewall. Are you doing this at work, or through a restrictive
firewall?

If you get to the point where you are connected, you're welcome to use

Printer

2005-09-23 Thread Kenneth P. Turvey
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

I'm running Debian unstable and I connect to a wireless network on which
there is a Windows XP box that has an HP PSC 750 connected to it. I
would like to be able to use this printer to print web pages and PDF
documents from my computer.

A few years back setting up a printer under Linux was a real chore. The
last time I was faced with this I did the simple thing and bought a
Lexmark printer with a postscript upgrade chip that I just plugged in
and it would work (after several hours of fiddling).

If this is still a huge hassle, I won't bother with it and just do all
my printing from the Windows box downstairs, but if the situation has
improved and there is a simple set up for printing under Debian, I would
like to make it happen. Can anyone out there point me in the right
direction?

Thanks in advance,

P.S. This printer also acts as a scanner (and copier). If that could be
used over the network it would also be cool, but it isn't really that
important.

Horizontal and Vertical Refresh rates for 15.4 inch Wide-Screen

2005-09-23 Thread David R. Litwin
I recently acquired a laptop with an LCD 15.4 wide-screen display with resolution of 1280 x 800 and 60MHz refresh rate. I have googled and have not come up with the answer to this question: What are the Horizontal and Vertical Refresh Rates for this screen? I need to know so that when I set it to this resolution, it will not give me two different versions of what I should be seeing. Basically, it is un-usable.
So, where can I find this information?Thank you kindly in advance.-- —A watched bread-crumb never boils.—My hover-craft is full of eels.—‽ --You've just been Interrobanged.
