what i want is to make more fonts accessible from gimp & openoffice, et

You could install the free (and Free) swf-player

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ apt-cache search swf-play
swf-player - Mozilla plugin for SWF files (Macromedia Flash)

Sorry for not being able to address your problem, but I used to run

On the right hand side of the video page, there's a Download button (at
least in the German version) which leads to an avi file. Due to a referer
check or something it can't be accessed directly.

It probably means that the hard drive is connected to some secondary IDE

Re: Disabling some services indivually and easily (nut)

2006-09-18 Thread Marc SCHAEFER
Summary:

   I wanted an administratively easy way to disable a service from
   running, something that could be specified at the LILO or GRUB boot
   prompt.

   I proposed to disable this service in run level 3, while still
   leaving it running at level 2. This would mean disabling the service
   would be as easy as adding a `3' at the end of the command line

   I was however concerned that this method would not really be
   maintainable, nor very practical if there are many services to
   disable independantly (I would quickly run out of usable run levels).

   (my practical question was about nut doing an immediate shutdown of
the machine when the UPS cable was not connected; which would mean
that in case of failure of the UPS, starting the system would be
impossible without an in-field manipulation of the system rc2.d
directory. I didn't find any easy way to configure nut to act
specially on the system boot, thus this idea of service disabling).

Suggestions given:

   - remove the /etc/rc2.d/S*nut

okay, but this is regarded as complex, you don't want non
savvy system-administrators to remove random files in the
system

   - use the level 3 modification

works, is quite easy, but is not reallys scalable, and you need
to know in advance what services are going to break for some
reason.

So, another idea I had:

   - add a disable-service=serv1,serv2,... kernel command line that
 would be parsed by some Debian service at boot and would temporarily
 disable the rc.d runner script from starting those services

Would that be a good idea ?

Debain with Sata & SCSI = boot problem

2006-09-18 Thread George A. Michalopoulos [AKA Lewis]

hello all,

i had a debian (etch) box, which was booting from a scsi disk.
everything was ok, until i mounted some sata disks on a pci controller.

Unpredictable, debian "sees" sata disks, before scsi, sometimes..
This causes Debian not to find /dev/sda3 which should be mounted to /
after several reboots, soft and hard, finally initialises scsi disks
first, and mounts root filesystem..

my problem is that i cant reboot it remotely, i have to be there, and
pray for scsi to initialise first..

any suggestions ?

some register isn't getting reset in a warm reboot? hard to say
whether that's a bug or a feature, but it does point out the reason
for tech support telling people to actually shutdown for 30 seconds or
so and then restarting (this assumes you use one of those OSes that
requires regular rebooting :)

Thanks for the suggestions all. I settled on

/dev/sda8/media/sda8vfatumask=0707,gid=100 0 0

That is, read, write and execute to members of the gid, which is
'users'. This makes it easy to change the group should I wish to later.
It also doesn't give away mounting privs, which I wanted to retain.

As far as Epiphany, I'm sure it's upstream (ie. the GNOME team) As the
same "About" option's copyright statement says.

As far as the main menu: The yellow tooltip comments that come up are
specified in the program's desktop file (*.desktop) that appears in

BTW, the menus can be edited (on a per user basis) using the "Alacarte

Also, when I first researched apt-build, I thought that, by the build
output, it didn't really optimize packages. However, the author of the
package referred me to an excerpt of
/usr/share/doc/apt-build/README.Debian where it says that apt-build does
in fact optimize. The excerpt says:

Q: gcc and g++ do not seem to be called with good options!

A: *** They are called with them! ***
What you see on your screen is the command called by make, but
the wrapper wraps (yeah, it does) calls to gcc/g++ and adds options you
specified in the apt-build configuration file.
You won't see this on your screen.
Try `ps ax | grep gcc' instead as a proof, while building.

I would say that as long as apt-build is configured properly (use
'dpkg-reconfigure apt-build'), apt-build does optimize.  I do agree with
OP, though that there seem to be some problems with apt-build's
functionality.  Cheers.

How works bind9 package in Debian?

2006-09-18 Thread Eduardo

Hi, I'm running Bind9 a few months and everything is right...but I
have changed the rndc config file. And I did:

- Removed the rndc.key in /etc/bind
- Created rndc.conf with the output of rndc-confgen
- Copied the commented lines to named.conf
- Tried to run 'rndc status'

But its showing me this error:

rndc status
rndc: connection to remote host closed
This may indicate that the remote server is using an older version of
the command protocol, this host is not authorized to connect,
or the key is invalid.

I checked all along the config files in /etc/bind but no one tells me
something useful about rndc.

How rndc works in Debian?? Does it have something that I miss???
My named.conf looks like this:

// This is the primary configuration file for the BIND DNS server named.
//
// Please read /usr/share/doc/bind9/README.Debian.gz for information on the
// structure of BIND configuration files in Debian, *BEFORE* you customize
// this configuration file.
//
// If you are just adding zones, please do that in /etc/bind/named.conf.local

//include "/etc/bind/named.conf.options";

// prime the server with knowledge of the root servers
zone "." {
   type hint;
   file "/etc/bind/db.root";
};

// be authoritative for the localhost forward and reverse zones, and for
// broadcast zones as per RFC 1912

zone "localhost" {
   type master;
   file "/etc/bind/db.local";
};

zone "127.in-addr.arpa" {
   type master;
   file "/etc/bind/db.127";
};

zone "0.in-addr.arpa" {
   type master;
   file "/etc/bind/db.0";
};

zone "255.in-addr.arpa" {
   type master;
   file "/etc/bind/db.255";
};

zone "minicom" {
   type master;
   file "/etc/bind/db.minicom";
};

zone "0.0.10.in-addr.arpa" {
   type master;
   file "/etc/bind/db.10.0.0";
};

// config do rndc

include "/etc/bind/rndc.key";

controls {
   inet 127.0.0.1 port 953
   allow { 127.0.0.1; } keys { "rndc-key"; };
};

The rndc.conf looks like:

# Start of rndc.conf
include "/etc/bind/rndc.key";

options {
   default-key "rndc-key";
   default-server 127.0.0.1;
   default-port 953;
};

The rndc.key is:

key "rndc-key" {
   algorithm hmac-md5;
   secret "TiR975EajvSrrIaaQFBp+g==";
};

DNS queries with UDP and TCP

2006-09-18 Thread Alejandro
Hi people, I have some low rate problems in my network and I think it
could be the DNS servers from my ISP I use in my proxy (squid) installed
in a Debian Sarge machine, they are open DNS's and they could have a big
traffic load.

But also I have read on the web that some common resolution queries to
DNS servers and their responses use TCP because they need a bigger
amount of bytes (I'm not talking about zone transfer, I'm talking about
of direct and reverse simple name resolutions). So do you think in my
firewall I have to open TCP/53 and UDP/53 ports in order to have name
resolution to my proxy, or just opening UDP/53 port is enough ???

Thanks a lot,

Alejandro

I'm trying to compile Firefox with "-march=athlon-xp". (Please spare me any
lecture about whether it's worth it, I am experimenting.) Although it
worked properly a few weeks ago, apt-build doesn't want to play nice right
now; it keeps trying to build the wrong version of the package. (apt-build
has a lot of bugs, actually, and it rarely works properly.) So I've been
trying to use apt-src.

What I would like to find is a way to set the compiler flags other than
editing debian/rules every time the source is extracted.

Google has turned up things like DEB_ARCH_OPT_FLAGS (which seems to do
nothing, and I kind of doubt it ever actually existed), and
DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS (which a quick scan of debian/rules indicates won't set
arbitrary options).

So, is there any way to set compiler flags in the Debian package building
process other than using apt-build or editing debian/rules?

look at the package:

pentium-builder

"Replaces gcc, cc, and g++ with scripts that build pentium optimized

naturally...
the kernel packages are called kernel-{headers|manual|source}-version
(or linux-* if you use a kernel-package from etch or sid),
though the files have a diffenrent name...

you can check what kernel images are installed by running
dpkg-query -l "kernel-*" and dpkg-query -l "kernel-*"

So, SATA drives will 'just work' with a 2.6.x kernel?

Hi,

I'm still introducing a friend of mine to Linux by phone.

Yesterday and the days before, his Realtek 8139 NCI worked out of the box
using DHCP. Today, no IP is received over DHCP; instead, the boot script
does several tries after different intervals and finally gives up.

I googled around and found a hint that the Firewire interface can occupy
eth0, and indeed, eth1 was present (which I assumed to be the NIC), but
replacing eth0 by eth1 in /etc/network/interfaces didn't work. Also
undoing
that change, blacklisting eth1394 in /etc/modules.d/blacklist and
rebooting

didn't solve it.

After the reboot, I noticed that 8139too wasn't loaded, so we
modprobe'd it;

then ifdown eth0, ifup eth0. No success.

Maybe it's useful to know that dmesg says that eth0 is a Realtek 8139. I
don't know what to do -- do you?

Thanks,

maybe a stupid remark, but could this be a hardware-fault of the realtek

reasons.

Could well be the problem, I too have had realteks just stop working,
worth replacing the card, preferably with a 3com or intel based one.

One of these upgrades had to replace the old /etc/fonts/fonts.conf and none
did. Manually replacing with the new package version and dpkg-reconfigure did
it.

getting beagle to use mailcap

2006-09-18 Thread Micha Feigin
How do I get beagle to use mailcap or something similar to find out what
programs to open files with?

I tried to open a pdf file, it is recognized properly as such but strace shows
that beagle looks /usr/share/mime and then tries to use evince (failing since
it was not installed), without checking if there is something else installed
(acroread/xpdf). Same for text/plain, it goes to gedit which I don't have (too
many irrelevant gnome dependencies) while I have quite a few others that work.

I ask because I have a sound card that disappears if I do this.
It will only work if I shut down and then boot into Linux.

Al of the above apps use GTK1 which, unlike GTK2, gets fonts from the

Are you asking how do you solve the problem of the freezing, or the
problem of not being able to unmount /?

You can't unmount / while the system is "up"; you could boot off a live
CD (like Knoppix, etc), and have an unmounted / (on the hard drive, not
Knoppix), but I'm unsure why you're trying to unmount /.

(I assume the "/nedia/cdrom0" above is a typo.)

If you're asking about the freezing, I'm unsure what's causing that; we
don't have enough details. What I would recommend though is to stay out
of X (stay in command mode - "/etc/init.d/gdm stop" or similar) for a
little while and see if the freezing happens there. If not, it's
probably related to X and/or Gnome, so I'd then start X with a simpler
environment, such as twm or icewm. If no freeze there, I'd suspect
Gnome. Etc.

You can mount it manually with something like "mount /dev/sda6
/home/shuanghe/SharedWinPartition", but you'll need some extra
parameters for handling file permissions, etc; probably you want to
create the appropriate entry in "/etc/fstab" for it; Google should have
lots of examples.

Again, I'd do the same process I mentioned above. Take X out of the
picture; is it still freezing? And so on.

xine colormap problem

2006-09-18 Thread Andrew Perrin
I've just installed debian sarge on a new computer, and it mostly went OK.
However, I'm having a strange problem playing video files, which I
generally do on xine. This problem occurs with other flavors, though,
e.g., kmplayer, gxine, oxine, etc.

The *first* time I run xine in a given X session, it works fine. Each
subsequent time, though, I get the effect I associate with an inadequate
color map - that is, distorted color to the point of looking like a
"cartoon." The only way I've discovered to fix this is to kill and
restart X, which is obviously not an adequate workaround.

The system is a Lenovo ThinkCentre 8212-UN7, the monitor a ThinkVision
L192P. Below I've pasted the relevant piece of the output of lspci -vv and
of xvinfo. Any ideas will be most appreciated!

Thanks,
Andy Perrin

text/Fonts missing in certain apps ???

2006-09-18 Thread anthony
Dear Debian-users,I have been using Debian etch for some six months and mostly it has been going well. However, after a few recent changes (I'm not sure which one caused the problem so I'm going to list them) I lost the text in the menus of several applications :
ArdourAudacityXmmsThe apps work, but when I click on the menus I just get a blank grey box pull down menu with no indication of what the menu items are.So, here's the list of recent changes, which one do you think affected the loss of menus/text?
I recently switched to blackbox/fluxbox so I deleted gnome-desktop, gnome and a load of other stuff I assumed was redundantI managed to break X, I think by using Sarge repositories (to get a version of VLC working, and no it did not work)
I fixed X by re-installing Xorg and the packages suggested when X didn't work and instead I got error messagesSo, I think thats it , all my other apps are fine (except Nicotine which opens but has no menus at all just one big grey box, but its been like that for a while). Should I reinstall fonts? give nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf some direction as to what fonts to use. install some bit of GTK??
I'm stuck and need some helpThanksAnthony

fglrx+AMD64+nforce3mobo

2006-09-18 Thread Klaus Imgrund
Hello,

this was supposed to go to the maintainer but did not
get accepted by the server.
Just dropping it here in case somebody stumbles over the
same problem and is looking for a hint - I know I did.

This is probably of limited interest and furthermore not
really a problem with the driver itself the way I see it - anyway:

I did get nothing but errors regarding the agp driver (agp not being
enabled)or also errors regarding drm (the ENODEV thingy) with the
debian kernel - running unstable i386 and also with x86_64.

Finally got me a vanilla kernel and the package from ati and things go
smooth now.
I did build the onboard GART support for AMD64 and the nvidia nforce2
agp support directly in the kernel - not as modules.

Dunno if it would work with modules too since I am not inclined right
now totry - had enough trouble setting up this box already
anyway :-)

Prost,

Klaus

I don't think so because on the same system, Windows XP is installed where
the card can be used without a problem (with DCHP, too).

Compiling CPU-optimized packages

2006-09-18 Thread Adam Porter
I'm sure this has been covered before, but I've dug through Google
and /usr/share/doc and I can't find a solution. Forgive me if I missed the
answer.

Thanks for any help.

VPN, Dial-up

2006-09-18 Thread Yura
Hi,

I had one problem with connecting to the internet through VPN.

I am connected to the local network, a network is configured for DHCP. Use Etch. A return on iternet is through VPN.

For creation of connecting utillize pptp-linux. Create connecting of
#pon tunnel. Creating connecting is succeeded, the interface of ppp0
appears, but nothing on it turns out and not passed.

Before there was an analogical problem. There was static IP, connecting
to the internet was carried out through network service (pty
"/usr/sbin/pppoe -I eth0 -S service_name -T 80"). That connection
worked, before connecting it is needed it was to disconnect network.
#ifdown eth0 (The interface of eth0 remained).

Thank you for attention, hope for your help.Yura.

Also undoing
that change, blacklisting eth1394 in /etc/modules.d/blacklist and rebooting
didn't solve it.

After the reboot, I noticed that 8139too wasn't loaded, so we modprobe'd it;
then ifdown eth0, ifup eth0. No success.

Maybe it's useful to know that dmesg says that eth0 is a Realtek 8139. I
don't know what to do -- do you?

Thanks,

Hi,

you are looking for
fsck
--> man fsck for details, supported filesystems etc.

Cheers,
Roman

Type "jobs" to find out what they are.

Background:

You can suspend jobs in a shell by pressing Ctrl+z or let them run in
the background by starting them with a trailing '&'. These are "stopped
jobs". You can view which jobs are still running by executing 'jobs':

$ jobs
[1]-  Stopped vim
[2]+  Stopped mc

You can now pick one of them to "wake up" again with the 'fg'
(foreground) command. In the case above, 'fg %1' would wake up vim, 'fg
%2' would wake up mc. You could also run 'fg' without any parameters,
which wakes up whatever process you put to sleep last. In the case above
this would be mc (shown by the + sign after the job id).

Handling:

If you log out and have background jobs running, these jobs will be
terminated without further questions. Since this might not be what you
want, the shell asks about these jobs. If you still want to exit,
regardless of these jobs' destiny, you can simply repeat 'exit' or
pressing Ctrl+d and the shell will exit. Otherwise, the commands above
will help you out.

I just wonder why the build process did not update my /etc/modules it self.

This means that you run applications (editor, applications start with
"&" on the end) and you do not finish it.

> what does this mean and how do i handle this issue?
Try
# fg
to get the applications into the foreground

see all those FATAL:... lines.

is this something I need to worry about?

If those kernel features were compiled directly into the kernel--not as
modules, there is no problem.

It was an issue with yenta_socket.
Giving "irqpoll" as kernel boot parameter solved the problem.
