Base-config en Etch
Hello World! He estat mirant per Internet i base-config ha sigut eliminat de la rama estable de Debian. En aquest cas que es pot fer per a utilitzar aquest programa en Etch? Coneixeu alguna alternativa a aquest programa? Necessite que l'he d'invocar via ssh. Gràcies. -- It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. prochain pilote NVIDIA
¿Alguna sugerencia o alternativa? accessibility install question
On debian when a system gets a text environment installed on it first then gets gnome-orca installed on it, gnome and gnome-orca get installed but X does not get installed. If X is required to run gnome; gtk, and kde and isn't found already installed on a system when a gnome-orca install gets done why aren't X and X associated packages also made dependencies and installed? It can be more difficult for users with accessibility requirements to install the g.u.i. part of debian correctly especially without sighted assistance when trying the installation and then have the G.U.I. environment come up accessibly when finished. I suppose one could use gdm to start gnome and not use startx but you'd still have the issue for setting the correct display and blind users tend to run debian without monitors or mice connected unless they can get sighted assistance on a maintenance issue. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Why do you think it is not advertised as a Debian release. Check the debian-release archives as to why the later version of GNOME did not go into Etch, (it was not technical, but human reasons) Debian has the most conservative release policy of any Linux distro I know of. That suits some types of users very well, particularly those who need reliability that's as close to 100% as you can get, those who's servers truly are mission-critical and can't afford a few minor glitches that might temporarily mess something up. It does not suit many garden-variety desktop users who systems are less than a few years old and who don't want to be stuck in early 2006 for the next year while Debian drags itself kicking and screaming through yet another protracted and endlessly delayed release cycle. Looking at the post-installation script, it seems that things go wrong at the very last step, which is: nspluginwrapper -n -i /usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree/libflashplayer.so According to the manpage, this is meant to install the wrapper for libflashplayer.so into the mozilla plugins directory. I would first run these commands: ldd /usr/bin/nspluginwrapper ldd /usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree/libflashplayer.so ldd /usr/lib/nspluginwrapper/i386/linux/npviewer.bin Maybe that will turn up a missing library. Pál Csányi [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: What about stumpwm? http://www.nongnu.org/stumpwm/ Use this window manager somebody on Debian Etch? Yes, I have it installed using etch, and like it very much. Though it was kind of hard to get going. You may have already set it up, but just in case you have not, of in case somebody else is trying, I will briefly mention what I found worked. It may help somebody out there. Firstly, I never got the Debian version working at all. I am sure I goofed it up, but I just couldn't find a way to make it start. The docs didn't seem to offer anything useful at all either. In the end I used the CVS version of stumpwm. It has a real README which actually has decent instructions. By following them I had a working executable in just a couple of minutes. However, sbcl from Debian also does not work right, and under any kind of load the entire system becomes uselessly unresponsive. I removed the SBCL installed via apt, and recompiled it from source. Then I installed clx using asdf (require 'asdf) (require 'asdf-install) (asdf-install:install 'clx) and recompiled stump. This worked fine, though the final product tends not to be very lightweight. I was also able to get stump with clisp working, though in the end it was less than reliable. The up-side though is that it is much, much lighter than sbcl. Again, I could not get the clisp I installed via apt to work, and had to compile from source. It failed again and again to work with stump though, until I tried CVS on that too. I also had to use new-clx instead of mit-clx. Unfortunately, even after getting it to work it crashes X fairly regularly (anytime certain dialog boxes are used, such as print or downloads) and so is rather less than useful. Really too bad as I was much impressed with its generally faster, lighter feel than stump with sbcl. But, I did get sbcl going okay, and with it stump seems solid and usable. It is fast overall, and certainly has the nice feel of ratpoison, with the bonus of a mode-line. And even though it is not terribly lightweight considering the sparsity of the thing I still think it is an excellent choice for a tiling WM. However, as much as I liked it, xmonad (http://xmonad.org/) was even more pleasing than everything else. It also took a little work to get going, though nothing like stump, but it was worth it in the end. It is unbelievably light and fast and even seems smaller than ratpoison. And dzen2, a separate app, as a status-bar is much more full-featured than stump's, and seems about as good as what ion has. Additionally, it handles transient windows much more realistically than does stump or ratpoison. With it you can also grab the window and resize it making that window a floating one rather than tiling, all without the hoops you seemingly had to jump through with ion3 to do the same thing. Without a doubt, xmonad with dzen has been the most satisfying and simple approach I have yet tried in the window manager market. Patrick

I am not aware of a single package that will do all that you want, but a combination of a few packages should get you there. I use syslog-ng for aggregating logs from many servers, and I think it far surpasses the standard udp syslog daemon for reliability. Running logcheck and/or logtool on the syslog server to parse the raw logs will get you pattern matching and various reporting possibilities. -- Kind Regards, Michael Shuler -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. If you've formatted your thumbdrive as an ext2 filesystem, how can it be properly unmounted if you simply unplug it? how to get keyboard layout with symbols
Hello, How do I export the current keyboard layout to a file (eps preferably) with symbols? I am trying with Indic layouts (IN) with the following command: $ xkbprint -eps -label symbols :0 -o ~/tmp/kb.eps But the labels of the keys in the eps file I get are the Unicode codes for the keys, I get no symbols. What am I missing? For the US keyboard layout, however, I get the symbols. This is on Debian Testing. thanks, -HS -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Frankly I don't have much experience with mysql, but the reason you are getting apt errors is because it fails to start. I suppose the information apt is giving you is a little mis-leading because it has appaerntly completed all its installation tasks except for restarting the server. The fact that the server failed to restart is generating the error in apt. So, you need to figure out why its not starting. No permutation of apt/dpkg stuff will solve this problem except perhaps removing and reinstalling it. If I had this problem, I would stop messing with apt/dpkg and start figuring out why its not starting. Read the logs. start it from a command line directly instead of the init-script. figure out how to turn up the verbosity. etc etc etc. Once you get it to start, then you can re-run the apt commands and it will clear out just fine. acerium:/# apt-cache policy mysql-server mysql-server: Installed: 5.0.45-1 Candidate: 5.0.45-1 Version table: *** 5.0.45-1 0 500 http://mirror.isoc.org.il testing/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status acerium:/# apt-cache policy mysql-server-5.0 mysql-server-5.0: Installed: 5.0.45-1 Candidate: 5.0.45-1 Version table: *** 5.0.45-1 0 500 http://mirror.isoc.org.il testing/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status you are running testing. You may have already set it up, but just in case you have not, of in case somebody else is trying, I will briefly mention what I found worked. It may help somebody out there. No, I have not set it up. :( Thank you for help! :) Firstly, I never got the Debian version working at all. I am sure I ... the CVS version of stumpwm. The debian stumpwm package dependency are: sbcl cl-clx-sbcl. Would you please give for us the step by step advices how to install from CVS stumpwm? Just in any case, if you have stumpwm installed from CVS on Debian, how can you uninstall (purge) it? (For case if the Debian stumpwm package come usable.) But, I did get sbcl going okay, and with it stump seems solid and usable. It is fast overall, and certainly has the nice feel of ratpoison, with the bonus of a mode-line. And even though it is not terribly lightweight considering the sparsity of the thing I still think it is an excellent choice for a tiling WM. I wish to try it out! :) -- Regards, Paul Csanyi http://www.freewebs.com/csanyi-pal/index.htm

Re: Does lilo still have a limit on it's menu entries?
On Saturday 29 September 2007 01:54, C. G. Montgomery wrote: In linux.debian.user Nigel Henry wrote: I read a while back that earlier versions of lilo could only have 6 entries on the menu. My lilo version is 1:22.6.1-9.3. I think it may not be a limit on the number of lilo entries. Not long ago, an upgrade to 2.6.21-2-k7 was done on a machine of mine. This put the initrd.img, System.map, and vmlinuz files into /boot but didn't change lilo.conf. In fact I decided to stay with the kernel I had been using, so it's just waiting there. I don't know whether grub is handled differently. I had the same when I installed the 2.6.18-5-686 kernel. The files were in /boot, but /etc/lilo.conf hadn't been updated, therefore running lilo did nothing. I commented out the stanzas for the bf2 kernel, and added the stanzas for the new 2.6.18-5 one, ran lilo, and now it's on lilo's menu. The reason I asked about the 6 menu items limit was because I seem to remember that during the adding of new kernels previously, that apt-get would prompt you for lilo, mentioning something about the boot block, and if you wanted to run lilo, and install it in the MBR. Now my lilo's arn't in the MBR, but in the / partition for my 2 Debian installs on this drive. Grub for FC2 is in the MBR, as it is the 1st Linux install on the drive. Not wishing Grub to be replaced, I said no to the apt-get yes/no request, and ran lilo after the install had completed. Now that I've effectively removed the references to the bf2 kernel I may remove this latest kernel, and try reinstalling it, just to see if I get this prompt for lilo with apt-get. Regarding Grub. At least on Fedora it works fine, and all kernel updates are added to it's menu. You can add as many kernels as you like. I suspect after a while you get a scroll bar to look through them. Saying that though, with fedora I also use Apt, but if you use Yum, which is the default package manager on Fedora, it only keeps 2 kernels as default, but you can change that behaviour so that all kernels are saved. Personally I think it's best that all kernels are saved, then you can decide which ones are no longer required. The original kernel when I installed Woody 3.0r2 was a bf one. It is still listed in /boot, and on lilo's menu. but is nowhere to be seen in synaptic, and no longer will boot with Etch. On the face of it, I can't see how to remove this original boot floppy kernel. Can I just delete all references to the 2.4.18-bf2.4 kernel in /boot? Then run lilo again. It seems a bit of a hack, but I can't see any way around it as synaptic doesn't even list the bf kernel, and you can't uninstall something that's not on the list. Yes, I've done just that to get rid of old kernels. Just edit lilo.conf to include only the stanzas you want and run lilo. As I mention above I commented out the stanzas for the bf2 in /etc/lilo.conf, and renamed the bf2 files in /boot. I'll clean that up later on as everything appears to be working ok now. hth cgm Thanks for your reply. Nigel. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Spring clean
Hi all Even though it is now approaching fall/autumn (in the northern hemisphere anyway), I am wanting to do some spring cleaning of my hard drive. In my enthusiasm for Debian's apt-get I have gorged myself on a load of packages that I probably don't need. One example is multiple language versions of OOo, but there are likely others too. Can someone recommend a newbie-friendly easy, and safe way of cleaning house so that I can retain those packages that I need (and want) but can clear out the dust bunnies, etc..? Re: Does lilo still have a limit on it's menu entries?

I installed on Etch yesterday the 2.6.18-5 kernel, which shows up in /boot ok, but running lilo doesn't add it to lilo's menu. I read a while back that earlier versions of lilo could only have 6 entries on the menu. My lilo version is 1:22.6.1-9.3. /etc/lilo.conf is below. [...] I have very little experience with Lilo under Debian, though I used it under Slackware. I first encountered lilo on Mandrake 9.2, and must admit that I had terrible problems with both LiLo, and Grub when I first started off with Linux, and setting up dual, and triple boot installs. I've sort of got them under control now, but it wasn't much fun at the time. Now the bootloader for the first install goes in the MBR, and the bootloaders for the subsequent installs go in their respective / partitions. Then I boot up the first install and add chainloaders pointing to the / partitions of the other distros on the drive. I don't know about the six item limit, but I suggest you manually delete the references to the bf kernels, but read man liloconfig and man update-lilo first. If the bf kernels do not appear in /boot, update-lilo may remove them from /etc/lilo.conf automatically. I've temporarily renamed the bf2 files in /boot, and commented out the stanzas for the bf2 kernel in /etc/lilo.conf, but am going to remove them completely as they are no longer useable on Etch. I also suggest that you remove, possibly using synaptic, any kernels that don't boot the system up properly. I usually keep all kernels. Alright the ones that don't boot properly can go, but sometimes older, non udev ones, are usefull to keep if you are appearing to have problems with the udev ones. I constantly get problems with udev kernels and my TVcard /dev/video0, and the webcam /dev/video1. Very hit and miss as to which app gets which video device. Someone on the list gave me some rules for udev, but they don't appear to be working. I'll have to start a new thread on that one. Thanks for the reply.
