Hi, I downloaded the latest d-i: http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/sid_d-i/arch-latest/i386/iso-cd/debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso and used it to install a lenny system but only with what was in the iso. Ran into the following: I don't want lenny, I want sid and have a sid local mirror. The reason I don't want lenny is that it takes me 3 days to download a lenny system and with sid a matter of seconds. But changing the sources to sid, dist-upgrade only upgrades 4 packages from the 138 installed. So in attempting to install kernel-package ran into the problem with perl: perl-base is installed but is 5.10.0-10 and perl wants 5.10.0-11. The reason I want kernel-package is I have to roll my own kernel because the one that comes with d-i (2.6.25-2-686) fails to give me framebuffers so I can't see a thing with those huge 80x25 characters. Prior to 2.6.24 I used the enhanced legacy drivers from serialmonkey and have gone back to them in preference to the in-kernel package modules as they performed much better, between 2 and 8 times the throughput. And guess what: vga=791 works! The problem lies in the .config file that Debian uses and apparently my hardware. Something that Maximilian Attems pointed out in http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=481063: ... please enlighten us on the .config changes. we are *not* carrying any fb specific patches. ... So now I have to go item by item and investigate the diff in .config files, which is vast because with my .config the kernel compiles in 12 minutes and with the Debian .config it takes 1 hour + 20 minutes! That is good news. You may be getting close to a solution. Might I suggestion the following incantation: diff -y | less I use that after I compile my new kernels from source and respond to the questions presented by 'make oldconfig'. I keep personal documentation on the kernel config settings that are relevant for my machines, and I have found this diff trick to be the fastest way to incorporate changes with new kernel versions. The -y option gives you a side-by-side dump of both files -- no lines omitted -- with indicators of lines that are different and lines that are contained in only one file. Hopefully you have a fairly high resolution monitor! ;) I like to run that diff in an xterm that I have maximized using the F11 key. Good clue! But I am no closer and consider giving up: it would only be useful if I found a kernel parameter for the cmdline to avoid being without framebuffers. That file is here: http://www.geocities.com/hugovanwoerkom/config-24-25-diff.txt Well, from looking over your 'diff -y' output, it looks like the problem is either in some non-obvious config option, mostly likely before the section marked # CPU Frequency scaling or in actual source code changes. I remember trying to enable the faster ywrap feature of VESA FB, and ending up looking at the sources to find out why my boot parameter for ywrap was always rejected in favor of redraw -- and I discovered that drivers compiled 64-bits cannot talk to the 32-bit BIOS, so that VESA FB is unable to do mode changing or primitive acceleration (via BIOS calls) on amd64 systems. (This led me to trying UVESA FB, once it became available in the kernel, so that I could get my virtual terminals to run at a vertical refresh more suited to my monitor's health. So, I know how you feel. I just tried to compile the just-released 2.6.26-1 sources last night. The resulting kernel runs fine on my desktop machine, but freezes early during the boot on the other machine. I thought it was because I had enabled RAID drivers, so I can get software RAID to work, but disabling RAID did not help... and disabling LOTS of things has not helped. When I installed the stock kernel (instead of building kernel after kernel myself) I discovered it wasn't a configuration problem at all -- the stock kernel was also freezing early in boot! My 2.6.25 kernels, stock and self-built, run just fine on exactly the same hardware, so it looks like some source code change between 2.6.25 and 2.6.26 rubs my hardware the wrong way. O.O '^' I'm currently trying to isolate the problem so I can submit a useful bug report. I see that kernel-archive.buildserver.net has a newer snapshot to try, so I will spend the rest of my day off here trying to pin down the problem. If all else fails, I can just remain at 2.6.25 to have a perfectly working machine -- just like 2.6.24 is the one that works for you. The big problem is that the DDs and kernel hackers don't have our hardware, and cannot reproduce our bugs. They can see our bug reports, but without having our hardware where they can get their hands on it, sometimes all they can do is shrug and say, Well, I can't reproduce the problem here. Maybe someone else will fix it. Your VESA FB problem is particularly strange, and it would probably take a kernel hacker with 'gdb' less than 5 minutes to discover why vga=791 is rejected, and maybe even fix it. Bummer. How can I find out the *reason* why a package is kept back? my solution is running aptitude in interactive mode and seeing the information there. if some package is broken/conflicts, then the source of the conflict is described in aptitude. mostly, however, no conflict is found - then i do just U (as upgrade) and G (as go) and it proceeds without problems. if you press just U, it will tell you what packages are going to be installed... at least there you should be able to see what is blocking your apt. probably not optimal solution, but works for me :) best, -- Lubos [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.lubos.vrbka.net -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Finally got Google Earth working on amd64
Hello, all: A while back, there was some discussion here about Google Earth not working on amd64 systems. I decided to take another whack at it today, using make-googleearth-package. I had it download the latest GoogleEarth.bin, but then, trying to make the package, it threw lots of warnings at me, claimed Success! at the end, but in fact had failed to build a package. So, I decided just to go with 'sh GoogleEarth.bin' (as root) which installed Google Earth. So far, so good, but when I invoked googleearth, as an ordinary user, I got an authentication error. So, I googled that, and learned that I needed to install lib32nss-mdns. Did that, and now I have Google Earth - with all its cool new features - up and running; and I did NOT have to remove my ~/.googleearth directory (as one googled answer had suggested), so that all my saved sites were still listed. how to close port 113 ident xinetd
Hi, I tried doing an nmap scan on myself the other day and found that tcp port 113 was open. Nmap listed the service as ident. I am trying to remove this service since I don't think I need it, but I can't figure out how. I removed the package pidentd, after which nmap reported the port was still open, but changed its service description to auth?. I have no other identd related packages installed on my system. I used netstat to find the process listening on port 113 and it seems to be xinetd. The exact listing of the process in `ps` is root 6766 1 0 17:45 ?00:00:00 /usr/sbin/xinetd -pidfile /var/run/xinetd.pid -stayalive -inetd_compat -inetd_ipv6 I've pasted my /etc/xinetd.conf file at the end - it is really short and doesn't contain anything relating to ident. An ls on /etc/xinetd.d shows these files: chargen daytime discard echo time I should also mention that xinet seems only to be listening on the default ipv6 address ::, and not on any ipv4 addresses. I don't think removing xinetd is the right way to go, but I haven't been able to find any answers on google. And I don't want to go about blocking ports on my firewall as that doesn't seem to me like a real solution - I just want to stop/remove the process that is listening on this port. That's presumably the reason for the changed description from nmap - xinetd is still listening on the port, but can't find the program when it tries to start it. Removing the package has hopefully removed the relevant line from the config file (/etc/inetd.conf?), so xinetd won't listen on that port when it restarts.
