Hi Wayne,
Seems to work. ndiswrapper seemed happy with the set up and nicely installed
the XP drivers. I'm not near an AP but I noticed that kwifimanager has a
green bar indicating dl-ul speed now that it didn't have before. We'll take
the laptop to an AP point and give it a try. I'll report the results later
in the day.

I'm very confused. Can you post your sources.list? I'm most sure that,
if you run Debian testing (Lenny), you have access to 2.6.24 (and
possibly later kernels). Anyway, Etch, which is older than Lenny, has
2.6.18, so you can't be running a recently updated (< 1yr.) testing
distribution without having at least 2.6.18.

Also, please post the exact output of your package manager when you
attempt to upgrade. Use the --simulate option to do this safely.

Although these documents are ancient, they may provide some useful
information. Install the doc-linux-text package and read these:

/usr/share/doc/HOWTO/en-txt/Alsa-sound.gz
/usr/share/doc/HOWTO/en-txt/Sound-HOWTO.gz
/usr/share/doc/HOWTO/en-txt/Sound-Playing-HOWTO.gz

The Linux kernel documentation also has some files that describe the
sound system; I hope they are not too obtuse for you; they are for me :-\

If you install the kernel documentation, you'll find the sound files for
ALSA in ./Documentation/sound/alsa. Don't bother with
./Documentation/sound/oss unless someone tells you to look in there. OSS
is a very ancient Linux sound system that ALSA has largely replaced.

Well, the drivers are unlikely to step on each other like that, however
the user-lever sound stuff might. Right now it sounds like there may
be places to adjust the sound level that you haven't checked yet.

likely volume controls from most low level to highest level:

alsa volume - set with alsamixer, alsamixergui or gnome-alsamixer

pulse-audio volume - set with pavucontrol/pulse-audio volume

App volume control - in media player, etc.

Have you checked all of these, and are you running Gnome,
KDE3, KDE4, or other?

I honestly do not know what i loaded or what i did, i think i got
something to work.
But i feel that becasue i tried to load so many different packages, i
think some are stepping on top of each other.

any help would be appriciated. I do not know what is the difference
between drivers and audio packages.

debian sound and audio drivers. - explained - please ???

Can anyone direct me to a FAQ about Debian Audio and Sound drivers??

I had an issue with sound, so i basically installed everything under the sun.

Do not know what i did, but got it to work. Unfortunately I think some
drivers are stepping on other drivers.

I think i install pulseaudio, alsa, and the kitchen sink.

How can i know what is really work and how can i check to disable the rest ?

when i run lspci |grep audio, I get the following:

rider:/# lspci |grep audio
00:04.0 Multimedia audio controller: nVidia Corporation CK804 AC'97
Audio Controller (rev a2)
rider:/home/mjh#

when i run lsmod , i get the following :

rider:/# lsmod |grep audio
snd_usb_audio 88736 0
snd_usb_lib21888 1 snd_usb_audio
snd_hwdep 15240 1 snd_usb_audio
snd_pcm89096 6
snd_usb_audio,snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm_oss

My current issue is that the audio for the is very low, no matter how
high i raise the volume.

--delete is --delete-after . --del is --delete-during .

Originally there were only --delete-before and --delete-after . Thus the
"default" (--delete) became --delete-after as it is the safer of the
two.

--delete-during was added later on. It is normally the one you'd like to
use. To make it easier (but still not brak semantics), they added the
option --del that means --delete-during .

Unless the server is too old to support --delete-during , just use --del .
If it is too old, you'll simply get a syntax error message saying so.

In addition, and I not sure about this since I haven't tried, one might
also need to be using a en_GB.UTF-8 locale. Would love to be enlightened

standards. It is my intention to modify the cookies to bring them up to
html4.01 or xhtml1.0 recommendations, and current best practice.

There are areas where I need guidance.

The Debian Emacs packages install the file(s) already byte compiled. Is
this from unmodified source from the mode maintainer's version as
available on the home site, and would there be any issues if it isn't?

Does this test procedure seem complete/safe enough?
 mv ./html-helper-mode.elc html-helper-mode.elc.orig
 cp ~/hhm/html-helper-mode.el ./html-helper-mode.el
Take a run through all the cookies.

Would it be out of line to post a link to my mods for d-u members to test?

cheers,

gary

The vendors should be able to provide you with that information if
they're willing to stand behind their products (if not, why are you
working with those vendors to begin with).

Also, consider open alternatives. There are many CAD and graphics
editing programs, and there's few things that Photoshop can do that GIMP
can't.

If all else fails, you should check the WineHQ appdb.

In any case, this is probably not the mailing list you're looking for

The automatic handling of removable media requires that many different
components work together - the kernel, udev, hal, dbus, assorted KDE
libraries and services. I am not too surprised that it does not work
with the kind of mix that you seem to have on your system.

I suggest that you make up your mind which branch of Debian you want to
use and then downgrade/upgrade/remove/add packages as is necessary until
your entire system comes from that one branch only.

You can use the following command to find out which ones of your
currently installed packages do not belong to your intended target
archive ("testing" in this example, replace this string if you decide on
something else):

aptitude -F '%p%t' search '~S ~i !~Atesting' | column -t

However, when I insert a CD say, and run

I tried that, no joy. I tried copying in the "Synaptics" device, just
like in the previous xorg.conf, and also as settings inside
the "configured mouse". Neither made any difference.

I also discovered that while KDE will let me change the magnitude of

set "scroll" to "0", only "1" or more.

Yet this is what is in /var/log/Xorg.0.log:

so it seems that it is in fact getting loaded. The old configuration

Dual-Layer DVD+R under Gnome?

2008-08-21 Thread Todd A. Jacobs
I have a Dell DVD+-RW GSA-H73N drive, and K3B recognizes it as
dual-layer with double-layer support. However, anytime I put a DVD+R DL
disc in the drive, I get a message from dmesg saying "I can't find any
tracks on this disc!" and I/O errors if I attempt to write to the disc.
Both Nautilus and k3b fail when attempting to write ISOs to the drive.

Anyone else have a similar drive that is burning DL discs, or know how I
can probe a little deeper here?

A better strategy would be to ask the software vendors whether or not their
program is supported under Linux.

Wacko,
you haven't got a script that does that have you? (Identifying the

manually more than once.

Adam

As per my original mail above, these two commands will show you the
hidden processes.

First one asks chkrootkit why it thinks there is an LKM Trojan on the
system.

Second one is the helper script run by chkrootkit that lists the hidden
processes but can be run directly.

I am still seeing output from these commands, but the daily chkrootkit
email warning of LKM Trojan has now disappeared!!

Any info you can supply would greatly help my decision.

Linux is a quite different operating system to Windows, so you can't
assume that a program written for Windows will run in Linux unless it
has been specifically ported to this platform. However there are similar
programs written for Linux which will do much the same job. I suggest
that you try for yourself installing a version of Linux, and look at
some of these programs to see if they meet your needs. You can install
linux side by side with windows on your hard disk if you want. Many (but
not all) Windows programs can also run under linux using a windows
compatibility layer called 'Wine', so you could look at that too.

I don't know of any linux programs similar to AutoCAD (though others
here might do), but Photoshop is roughly equivalent to a linux program
called the GIMP. For Soundforge, there are a variety of Linux based
tools which cover a similar field - look at Rezound, Audacity, and
Ardour for a start.

You could try to run gconf-editor and look for apps->nautilus->desktop

These are software built for Microsoft Windows and will not run on linux
natively. For these programs to work on linux you'll need the software called
wine. Check out http://winehq.org. Wine can be installed in Debian GNU/Linux

Photoshop can be replaced by The GIMP in some cases.

For SoundForge... There is at least one good free sound editor for Linux.

Thanks for your reply.

According to synaptic, 'emacs' is a meta-package which points to
emacs21. In any case, both these packages give me the error:
emacs21-nox:
Depends: emacs21-bin-common but it is not going to be installed

emacs21-bin-common gives the error:
emacs21-bin-common:

emacs21-common gives the error:
emacs21-common:
Depends: emacsen-common (>=1.4.10) but it is not installable

Hello,

I'm tring to install Emacs on Debian 4.0r4. Here's what apt-get gives me:

ff9:/home/nishita# apt-get install emacs
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  emacs: Depends: emacs21 or
emacs21-nox but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages

Synaptic takes me through a chain which ends at: emacsen-common
I can't find this package anywhere.

Can anyone help?

No, 32 versus 64-bits has nothing to do with the number of
processors/cores. Check your BIOS settings, to see if for some reason

I cannot help about VirtualBox, but you can try other virtualization
methods (such as quemu, bochs) or a real hardware to understand if the
problem is in the *.bin files

I suspect that the problem is not in the files, but in some
incompatibility with VirtualBox (or of your configuration of
VirtualBox). VirtualBox documentation/googling/forums might help.

RE: Which --delete* to Use in 'rsync'

2008-08-21 Thread Tammo Schuelke
The during or after options should be a bit faster because rsync already knows
what to delete and doesn't have to scan for changes, but especially after may
cause problems if a directory changes into a file or the other way round. I
don't know how rsync handles such cases, the option should probably be combined
with force. Also, deleting the files before the transfer reduces the space
required for the operation and reduces the risk of running out of space. On the
other hand, if for some reason the transfer fails, you still have valid copies
of the files on the receiving end. Just my thoughts on this.

RE: What to do about SSH brute force attempts?

2008-08-21 Thread Tammo Schuelke
If you have an existing userbase, you can't just switch to public key
authentication, depending on the type of customer. pubkey auth is also
generally inconvenient if people tend to use different computers.
This is also a problem we just ran into. Fortunately, recent versions of
OpenSSH support match blocks and chroot. This allows you to a) selectively
enable/disable password authentication, which reduces the possibility of a
successful brute force attack, and b) re-root anybody to their respective homes
so even if somebody successfully breaks into your system, there's no much he
could do then. It also allows you to completely disable FTP access, which not
only prevents passwords being transmitted in plain text but also closes a hole
in your firewall setup.
Combined with thorough system monitoring (prelude, snort, samhain, zabbix...)
and a generally strict security policy (proper file system permissions, mount
options and so on, any proactive security measures), any system can be made
pretty hard to attack. On the other hand, as the recent key vulnerabilities
caused by the Debian OpenSSL version have shown
(http://lists.debian.org/debian-security-announce/2008/msg00152.html), you
can't make sure that the programs your security policy relies on don't have
holes in themselves.
"Pretty hard to attack" is usually just a question of how skilled and
persistent the attacker is. A script kiddy running a simple brute force attack
can usually easily be blocked by having something like denyhosts running in the
background. Somebody who really wants to break into your system and actually
knows what to look for won't be stopped by such measures.
If somebody from within the system tries to do bad things, you usually have a
valid contract with that person which makes it easy to sue him for any damages
or downtimes caused. Depending on the user type, it would also be possible to
mount the user fs noexec and only allow access to a read-only fs containing
executables from within his chroot (proactive approach again).

Re: Ugly java applet fonts

2008-08-21 Thread Rob Gom
Thank you very much for your answer.
I have checked debconf-utils output and it was indeed bitmap fonts set
to true. However, after unsetting it, look didn't change.
I have proceed further and tried to decompile java classes, but they
were so obfuscated, that I had to give up (I wanted to check which
fonts the applet tries to use).
I have also checked /usr/lib/jvm for font string, but there were too
many of them. I only noticed that there is latin-1 in many strings,
whereas I use latin-2 primarily ...
I will check further ...

Increasing screen resolution

Hi

I have started a new thread on this to avoid hijacking a similar thread

My current screen resolution is 1400x1050 with a refresh rate of 50Hz.

This is my xorg.conf file:

those settings.

I am using an Nvidia GeForce 8500GT card on a Lenny machine.

How would I go about increasing the resolution?

Thanks

Icons on Gnome desktop

2008-08-21 Thread andy

Hello

Minor issue really, but would be nice if I could sort it out, so help
would be welcomed:

My Lenny system faithfully automounts CDs and USB data sticks, etc., but
when I am in Gnome, these automounted devices are not iconised on the
desktop itself. If I go into "computer" (or whatever it is called), I
can double click the device icon and then it will appear on the desktop.

Whenever I switch over to Xfce4 or even KDE for a change, the icon
appears on the desktop automagically.

Anyone have any suggested fixes to this minor inconvenience?

Cheers

Andy

I've always just used the first option (--delete).

Can anyone suggest when I might use one of the last two?

Yes,
I heard that USB sticks are not very reliable. But it died after only
two months! I was expecting it to run without problems for at least a
year or so.

In the light of this, I really don't know what USB

now sounds like a very poor choice). Are other memory sticks (Kingston,
OCZ, etc) more reliable?

Please share some of your experience.
Which USB drives would you recommend, and which are not good for 24/7
usage as Linux root file system?

I don't want to install my
system on a hard drive because of power consumption and heat. I really
want to use USB drive, but I need something that will last for more
than two months.

I have been using Sandisk and Kingston sticks for over 2 years (gee has
it been that long) and they are still working. I don't know what you
have in your /etc/fstab for you system but the following is what I use.

/dev/sdb1 /media/flash vfatrw,user,noauto,noatime 0 0

the noatime was said to be necessary for long USB stick life. It seens
to have worked here.

I like the pcmcia cards but I also use 3 different usb adapters. I
prefer the pcmcia cards because they all work with madwifi. I only
bought cards that were madwifi compatable.

I would suggest you search for a pcmcia card that has the features/price

I like the Netgear WG511U 3.3v/Cardbus pcmcia cards because that work
great. Never had a problem with them and by following all the Tips
given in the UserDocs on the madwifi site I had no problems using then

The madwifi Compatibility page did not have a listing for a company

Iceape (mozilla browser) Bookmarks list does not scroll during drag drop

2008-08-21 Thread H.S.
Hello,

On Debian Testing, if I drag a link to the Bookmarks menu the menu opens
fine. I have a large list of bookmark folders in it and I need to bring
the link (mouse button still depressed) to the little down-arrow near
the bottom of the list to make the list scroll up. However, it just
stays there and doesn't scroll up.

In effect, I can drag a link and drop it only in the bookmarks which are
visible when the Bookmarks menu drops down. I cannot bring up the
bookmark folder which are not shown and need to be scrolled up.

Is this just me or do others see this too? I have Iceape 1.1.11-1.

Thanks in advance,
->HS

I also tried installing Ubuntu's amd64 version to similar results

That is because you do not have the sid repositories listed in your
sources.list.

However, the thunar-volman package requires Thunar version 0.5.1 or later, and
the Etch Thunar is only at 0.4.0.

You could try installing Thunar from the etch-backports (it has version 0.9.0)
and then installing thunar-volman from Lenny. To do that you need to add
backports and testing repository lines to your /etc/apt/sources.list:

deb http://www.backports.org/debian etch-backports main contrib non-free
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ lenny main non-free contrib

then do:

apt-get uninstall thunar
apt-get -t etch-backports install thunar
apt-get -t lenny install thunar-volman

If that doesn't work, or is too much trouble, there are other automounting
solutions you can look into. For example, ivman is in etch:
http://ivman.sourceforge.net/

Hope that helps,
- Chris

I've looked into this a bit more. You're running etch. etch's thunar
does not depend on, and probably can't use
thunar-volman. http://packages.debian.org/etch/thunar tells us that it
suggests hal and pmount. This is likely what handles automounting for
thunar. You should make sure these are installed. That's all the
advice I have onthis problem, though, as I'm badly out of date on xfce.

you don't have any sid sources in your sources.list. To get sid
packages, you'd have to add a sid source and then do aptitude
update. *BUT* I'm not advocating that *at all*. Don't do it. Use etch
backports to get packages that aren't in etch. until you have better
knowledge of debian systems, mixing sid with etch is a bad idea.

Well, my initial install was from the Etch DVDs, but I had a mixture
of Etch and lenny for a while. I recently did a dist-upgrade to lenny,
but have a few sid packages from somewhere (I think during a failed
KDE 4.1 install attempt). Anyway, I had Etch/lenny when the automount

just put the missing stuff back into xorg.conf, as a start. X still

Re: no network connection

2008-08-21 Thread Ed Sutter

I can run gconf-editor, but there is no NetworkManagerApplet
under apps.

I see that there is something called NetworkManager and
NetworkManagerDispatcher
under /usr/sbin; but when I run gconf-editor, there's no
apps->NetworkManagerApplet
entry.

continued thanks...

I might be assuming wrong things here. Do you have network-manager-gnome
installed? Are you even logging into GNOME?

If you are logging into GNOME and do not have network-manager-gnome, try
installing it and then check gconf-editor again. If you already had
network-manager-gnome, try reconfiguring it ($ sudo dpkg-reconfigure
network-manager-gnome).

If you have no need for Network Manager at all (or if the above does not
solve your problem), which actually seems to be your case, you could
also try this:

Uninstall any network-manager packages ($ sudo aptitude remove
network-manager network-manager-gnome network-manager-kde) and setting
your interface to auto (in /etc/network/interfaces):

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

Either approach should work in theory. Please post any further doubts.

Ok, my problem appears to be resolved. Just to recap...
I am running GNOME, and according to dpkg -l network-manager was installed.
I was unable to find network-manager-applet in gconf-editor->apps.
So, I uninstalled network-manager and network-manager-gnome, and at the
moment that appears to have resolved the problem. My system now comes
up with the network enabled.
Note that I made no changes to /etc/network/interfaces to resolve this.
Thanks for the help.

Here is what we have for auto-mounting ISO images.

$ cat /etc/auto.master
#
/var/www/netinst/cds/etc/auto.netinst-cd

$ cat /etc/auto.netinst-cd
cd1 -fstype=iso9660,ro,user,loop :/path/to/image1.iso
cd2 -fstype=iso9660,ro,user,loop :/path/to/image2.iso

This will still be require a file system to mount.

X is now much, much better at figuring out mouse, and GFX requirements,
so uses a stripped down .conf file now.

Well, I have got about 17000 messages on my server and mutt works very
fast downloading nothing of them.

I use this in my .muttrc to achieve that:

set spoolfile=imaps://192.168.0.1/INBOX
set folder=imaps://192.168.0.1
set imap_user=js
set imap_login=js
set imap_pass=

I am not sure whether the imap_user and imap_login both have to be
there.

Hi,

I am not sure what the issue might be (hard to guess with no much info
on your setup).
Just noting down something that came to my mind: I had seen one person
facing similar issue (on an AMD64 machine). He had to disable USB
devices in BIOS to get his installation working. Wierd, but that is
what happened. This could be a BIOS bug.

My advice would depend on your level of skill with a shell, Linux networking
and Debian. While Debian makes it and most everything exceptionally easy, one
does need to know his way around the system a little.

Samba has good documentation.

This is one of the major motivating factors for creating fuse.
Why take the hard road here?

fuse allows users with filesystem access to an image to mount it
within one of their own directories.
There are fuse drivers for iso (fuseiso), ext (fuseext2), tar
(archivemount, avfs), tar, gzip, bzip2, rar (avfs), network (fusesmb).
e.g. iso
  mount:
$ fuseiso /path/to/image.iso ~/mnt
  unmount:
$ fusermount -u ~/mnt

or with avfs, there's an example of using it here:
http://linuxwindows.org/2008/05/how-to-use-avfs.html

>From the article:
"
After installation of AVFS,establish the folder .avfs in the home directory.
Then run mountavfs, which does not require root privileges.
Open .avfs folder, you will see a mirror structure of the root
directory, which the cabinet can be open as the folder, but not directly
access to them, need with the #, such as
   /home/yourname/garro.rar

  should be visited as follows:

  cd /home/yourname/.avfs/home/yourname/garro.rar#/
"

This works for tar, gzip, rar, bzip2 and others.

cheers,
Owen.

Turning off touchpad "scroll"

2008-08-21 Thread Curt Howland
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi. Up to date Sid.

Back before the recent changes in X, I had put this in my xorg.conf:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Synaptics Touchpad"
Driver "synaptics"
Option "SendCoreEvents""true"
Option "Device""/dev/psaux"
Option "Protocol" "auto-dev"
Option "VertEdgeScroll""false"
Option "HorizEdgeScroll" "false"
EndSection

and the very annoying "scroll" areas were gloriously gone.

But now, after the change in X where most of the specific
configuration options are autodetected, I'm back to having "scroll"
areas.

So I put the following into the only place available in the new
xorg.conf

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Configured Mouse"
Driver "mouse"
Option "VertEdgeScroll""false"
Option "HorizEdgeScroll" "false"
EndSection

but the annoying "scroll" remains.

Suggestions?
