Question de points de vue.

Debian squeeze no notebook Positivo Aureum 4200
Boa sorte. Re: handling removable media without gnome-volume-manager
Hi all, ivman ? automount ? I'd like something where I can encode the behavior for particular devices, i.e. as I'm using the same devices over and over I'd like a way to make sure that the same device gets mapped to the same thing. Not needing X to be up and running is nice too. teh google reveals the above choices. I don't think that automount is quite right, seems like it will work, but wasn't really designed for the task. ivman is several years old, and I'm wondering if it's been superseded by something else. Thanks, Brian Hi Brian, usbmount does this (apart from different behaviour for different devices). To set up: - Install the usbmount package. - Modify/add lines in /etc/usbmount/usbmount.conf: FILESYSTEMS=ext2 ext3 vfat MOUNTOPTIONS=sync, noexec, nodev, noatime FS_MOUNTOPTIONS=-fstype=vfat,flush,gid=plugdev,dmask=0002,fmask=0113 - Add user(s) to plugdev group. - Load kernel modules: sudo modprobe usb-storage sudo modprobe sd_mod (and add them to /etc/modules) When you plug in a device it will appear as /media/usb (linked to mount point /media/usb0). A second device would be mounted as /media/usb1 etc. To unmount, I run sync then pull the device. I think the sync command is probably unnecessary given the flush mount option, but I do it anyway out of caution. There's no GUI, which I count as an advantage. -- Cheers, Clive -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Unfortunately, since none and nocheck appear to be the only valid sub-options for the check option, and since it is the default, there does not appear to be any way to override it. Maybe there is an undocumented option, like check=whendue, or something like that, that can be set with tune2fs, but barring that I can't think of a way to force a check when a check is due, other than mounting it at boot time via /etc/fstab and specifying a non-zero value in the sixth column. But the actual check is done by *.fsck, which is not invoked by mount, but by the initscript that invokes mount (if everything is ok). I wonder if mount even contains the code to do filesystem checking at all[1]. What I'm trying to say is that this problem is not solvable at the kernel/mount level, but by the userland tools doing the actual mount. [1] I doubt it since it would have to include code for every mountable filesystem, and this goes against the do one thing and do it well philosophy. X: display refreshing just stops
Hi again, Problem: Screen freezes until I touch any key or move the mouse. For minutes I can just stare at Gkrellm and see the clock (and everything else) not doing anything. Everything on screen has stopped at whatever they were doing at the moment it freezed. Multiple, non-concurrent repositories?
I don't have Internet access from home for my laptop, so I access it from a friend's house. At home, I have a Lenny repo set up using reprepro (I'll call it homeRepo), and things install from there okay. When I have network access, I install packages from the official Debian repositories (here called debRepo), so packages can never be installed from both homeRepo and debRepo at the same time. that's all good. My problem lies in the fact that I have to edit my sources.list and update the package lists each time I change sites, so that I have access to that site's repository. I've checked the documentation, without success, for a way, without having to change config files every time I change sites, to specify Install package foobar, preferably from debRepo, but if debRepo doesn't work, then install from homeRepo, and only if homeRepo doesn't work, then give standard failure message. I've made some progress in figuring out how to do this, but my method still has a few snags: leave _both_ the homeRepo and debRepo entries uncommented in my sources.list. The snag here comes when I see a DSA, see if I need to upgrade, and if so, update safe-upgrade -- I get (expected) errors that homeRepo can't be found and every package in homeRepo is marked Untrusted until I update from home. (unexpected, but that's another thread) I am aware of 'aptitude install package=version' and 'package/archive'. Something that just struck me as I was composing this mail: Would it be a more effective solution to my problem (than what I'm currently using) to change homeRepo's archive name from 'lenny' to something else, then when I want to install a package from homeRepo, do 'aptitude install foopackage/somethingelse'? The way I see it, though, it wouldn't settle the update issue. As an aside, the homeRepo is mainly intended for installing packages until I can get to a network connection, at which time they'll be upgraded on my next upgrade run. -- _ Brian Ryans 8B2A 54C4 E275 8CFD 8A7D 5D0B 0AD0 B014 C112 13D0 . I understand that this is new technology and maybe it would have been wise to see the next batch of motherboards. But right now the choice was between plain Intel and Gigabyte or Asus with features and more expansion possibilities. And when some review mentioned some doubts about the capacitors in Intel board (not that they weren't good, but that they weren't the top quality), that made me take the Gigabyte. The problem (or how I see it) is that the Intel H55 board offered now isn't the kind of rock-solid oozing with quality -type of product that I would expect and pay a premium for. But instead it's kind of reference implementation that actually is quite moderately priced. Don't know, maybe it's just too cheap to be taken seriously :-) This is getting a bit silentpcreviewish post, but if someone is in the market for this kind of desktop machine, this is what I got: Intel Core i5-670 3.46GHz processor Prolimatech Megahalems cpu cooler Nexus Value 430W power supply Antec P183 case 3 x Noctua NF-S12B FLX fans (with ultra low noise adapter in use) Gigabyte GA-H55-UD3H motherboard The whole bunch works fine and quiet out-of-the-box without the need for underclocking or undervolting that the old processors required (and that Intel boards don't support). Jozsef Vadkan wrote: Why doesn't my internet-connection script work? When I plug the ethcable out, it just waits...and waits...and waits... The script: http://pastebin.com/AE9U1qdL Depending on what you're using it for, one ping may not be enough. I've seen ADSL routers (more than one model) get into a state where they will pass a ping and some other protocols, and not pass others. For some reason, http seems to be quite demanding, so my current router check script opens up to six websites and greps for strings they must contain. If all six fail to return coherent results, the router gets rebooted. If that seems like overkill, it works, and various lesser measures that I have tried were unreliable and rebooted too often on false alarms. Re: Gnucash segfaults
On Tue, 2010-03-16 at 13:09 -0400, John A. Sullivan III wrote: snip Compiling 2.2.9 from source works without installing the libraries from Squeeze. Is this something that should be passed along to backports? How is that done? Thanks - John I was able to build an installable .deb package for 2.2.9 for Lenny with the problematic lenny-backport libraries. This is what I did (adapted from our internal documentation): GnuCash 2.2.6 seg faults on Lenny when the Lenny-Backports are used for OpenOffice and IceWeasel. This is probably due to the newer libglib2. We cannot simply install 2.2.9 from Squeeze or Sid as it has many dependencies that would seem dangerous to bring into Lenny. Thus, we will recompile the 2.2.9 deb for Lenny. The procedure is as follows. Some of the steps need to be done as root Install the needed packages for building apt-get -t lenny-backports install devscripts build-essential Edit /etc/apt/sources.list by adding a Lenny Backports source repository such as the following: deb-src http://www.backports.org/debian/ lenny-backports main contrib non-free Make apt aware of the repository: apt-get update Other steps MUST not be done by root so we need another user console to do the following steps. We will need the 2.2.6 source deb to have all the various settings and options used by debian. These will be in the debian directory and is really all we need from the source deb. We will store this in gnucash-2.2.6 We will also need the 2.2.9 source tarball. We will store this in gnucash which will become the deb build directory mkdir /data/Tech/download/gnucash mkdir /data/Tech/download/gnucash-2.2.6 cd /data/Tech/download/gnucash-2.2.6 apt-get -t lenny-backports source gnucash gnucash-common We need to install dependencies and this must be done as root so return to the root console and do: cd /data/Tech/download/gnucash-2.2.6 apt-get -t lenny-backports build-dep gnucash gnucash-common Return to the user console cd /data/Tech/download/gnucash wget http://www.gnucash.org/pub/gnucash/sources/stable/gnucash-2.2.9.tar.bz2 tar jfvx gnucash-2.2.9.tar.bz2 mv gnucash{-,_}2.2.9.tar.bz2 mv gnucash_2.2.9{,.orig}.tar.bz2 - This is the name format debuild will expect cd gnucash-2.2.9 cp -r ../../gnucash-2.2.6/gnucash-2.2.6/debian ./ cd debian The changelog is more than information; it is critical for debuild processing. If nothing is speci‐ fied, mkdosfs will automatically select between 12, 16 and 32 bit, whatever fits better for the file system size.
