Re: Questions about RAID 6
On 4/30/2010 6:39 PM, Ron Johnson wrote: On 04/26/2010 09:29 AM, Tim Clewlow wrote: Hi there, I'm getting ready to build a RAID 6 with 4 x 2TB drives to start, Since two of the drives (yes, I know the parity is striped across all the drives, but two drives is still the effect) are used by striping, RAID 6 with 4 drives doesn't seem rational. We've taken OP to task already for this, but I guess it bears repeating. Use multiple HW controllers, and at least 7-8 drives, I believe was the consensus, given that SW RAID 6 is a performance loser and losing a controller during a rebuild is a real ruin-your-week kind of moment. But while some of us were skeptical about just how bad the performance of RAID 5 or 6 really is and wanted citation of references, more of us just questioned the perceived frugality. With four drives, wouldn't a RAID 10 be better use of resources, since you can migrate to bigger setups later? And there we were content to let it lie, until... but the intention is to add more drives as storage requirements increase. My research/googling suggests ext3 supports 16TB volumes if block Why ext3? My kids would graduate college before the fsck completed. ext4 or xfs are the way to go. I have ceased to have an opinion on this, having been taken to task, myself, about it. I believe the discussion degenerated into a nit-picky banter over the general suitability of XFS, but I may be wrong about this... _ Seriously, ext4 is not suitable if you anticipate possible boot problems, unless you are experienced at these things. The same is true of XFS. If you *are* experienced, then more power to you. Although, I would have assumed a very experienced person would have no need to ask the question. Someone pointed out what I have come to regard as the best solution, and that is to make /boot and / (root) and the usual suspects ext3 for safety, and use ext4 or XFS or even btrfs for the data directories. (Unless OP were talking strictly about the data drives to begin with, a possibility I admit I may have overlooked.) Have I summarized adequately? MAA . First off, thank you all for the valuable information and experience laden information. For clarity, the setup has always been intended to be: one system/application drive, and, one array made of separate drives; the array protects data, nothing else. The idea is for them to be two clearly distinct entities, with very different levels of protection, because the system and apps can be quite quickly recreated if lost, the data cannot. More clarity, the data is currently touching 4TB, and expected to exceed that very soon, so I'll be using at least 5 drives, probably 6, in the near future. Yes, I know raid6 on 4 drives is not frugal, I'm just planning ahead. My reticence to use ext4 / xfs has been due to long cache before write times being claimed as dangerous in the event of kernel lockup / power outage. There are also reports (albeit perhaps somewhat dated) that ext4/xfs still have a few small but important bugs to be ironed out - I'd be very happy to hear if people have experience demonstrating this is no longer true. My preference would be ext4 instead of xfs as I believe (just my opinion) this is most likely to become the successor to ext3 in the future. I have been wanting to know if ext3 can handle 16TB fs. I now know that delayed allocation / writes can be turned off in ext4 (among other tuning options I'm looking at), and with ext4, fs sizes are no longer a question. So I'm really hoping that ext4 is the way I can go. I'm also hoping that a cpu/motherboard with suitable grunt and fsb bandwidth could reduce performance problems with software raid6. If I'm seriously mistaken then I'd love to know beforehand. My reticence to use hw raid is that it seems like adding one more point of possible failure, but I could be easily be paranoid in dismissing it for that reason. Run it from the main environment directory. It is in the db*-util packages. Use the correct target version (for cyrus, see the package dependency list to know which libdb it uses). Just delete tls_sessions.db. It is the TLS session cache. You can consider deleting deliver.db. It is the cache used for duplicate suppression and to avoid sending vacation messages to the same recipient twice. There will be very little harm done (if any) should you delete it. Consider reading the documentation for berkeley DB, especially the stuff prepared by OpenLDAP and samba (look in their web pages). Screw that up, and your performance goes downhill. Consider reading the archives of the cyrus users ML, hunt down from any posts from @fastmail.fm and read them. They _REALLY_ know their stuff. All skiplist DBs are auto-upgraded by cyrus on access. If one wasn't, chances are it is corrupt and you have a big problem. After you manage to start cyrus, run cyrquota and cyrreconstruct over *ALL* mailboxes. I mean *ALL* of them. And this _will_ take time. You could do it with the system in use, but since it is a safety measure to insure there is no inconsistent data, well, it is best done before any read or write access is done to the mailboxes. And do remember cyrus has databases stored in the user dirs as well. Debian packages should have them skiplist or plaintext, which don't require manual intervention, but check it (seen database). Sieve requires conversion of _all_ scripts on all spools. Look for the massievec script and run it on every sieve script. This is _all_ in the cyrus documentation, although probably not organized like that... -- One disk to rule them all, One disk to find them. One disk to bring them all and in the darkness grind them. Re: Can't play 24bit/96kHz flac files
* Native capability of sound card can be found from cat /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/sub0/hw_params * Decoding is done by the player itself, most probably the decoder output format in your case would be 96khz, 24 bit little endian. If the native rate of your card is only 44100Hz/48000Hz, it can not support this. * In order to play this format this has to be downsampled. The downsamping could be done either by 1) the player itself, but it completely depends upon the features and capabilities of the player or 2)by the (alsa) driver. So these are your options. * Try out different players as Camaleón suggested. * Many players allow you to specify the output audio device. Try plughw:0,0 instead of the default one. This is a special device given by alsa to do audio processing. Another possibility would be to down-sample the file and then play it with mocp. How does one down-sample a .WAV file? I tried mplayer -ao plughw:0,0 file.mp3 but I got: No such audio driver 'plughw' No such audio driver '0' Could not open/initialize audio device - no sound. Audio: no sound

It seems like that isn't present yet, the only core TLS support I can spot is a plugin for accepting TLS-wrapped connections not initiating them. I've usually used qpsmtpd to process mail then either: * Reject it at SMTP time. * Accept it for delivery and write the mail directly to Maildir folders. * Accept it for delivery and pass to exim4 for final delivery. It seems like that isn't present yet, the only core TLS support I can spot is a plugin for accepting TLS-wrapped connections not initiating them. So I haven't been totally wasting my time ( ;) ), since my tmta does support outbound SSL / TLS connections, and indeed, that was a primary design goal, since I need to push mail out through Gmail's SMTP servers, which require SSL / TLS. I've usually used qpsmtpd to process mail then either: * Reject it at SMTP time. * Accept it for delivery and write the mail directly to Maildir folders. * Accept it for delivery and pass to exim4 for final delivery. (ie. I've never tried to re-deliver to a remote machine via qpsmtpd, only via passing to exim4.) Got it. The O'reilly discussion that I saw also mentioned that qpsmtpd was primarily meant to be used in conjunction with a normal MTA, and not to replace one. Re: Mounting DVD. What am I doing wrong?
Your perms are missing the x flag for the owner so no access is allowed. I recall a similar situation in another mailing list... I don't want to *execute* the files, I want to *read* them. You already got the answer. Directories have to have x flag to let user in. I assume your dvd was written with original permissions. Try out to have it on hdd and make a little experiment. Change flags on/off. That way you will learn what works and what does not. Best regards Zoran -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble?
