What would be the least expensive card for my needs? Well, if you dont want to play games, your choices are, ATI OSS drivers, nVidia OSS drivers, nVidia binary blob driver. You can get pretty much any ATI gpu and get everything bar 3D from the OSS driver, see here [1], here are a few cards that would be fine [2]-[5] If you want video decoding in the GPU, you only real option is a nVidia card with the binary blob (Its iffy on the ATI binary and the OSS drivers have no support or its iffy) though the only AGP nVidia card i could find new is this [6] and it will have limited hardware decoding support due to its older nature. The number of AGP cards is quite limited, but the HD3xxx or HD4xxx or a nVidia 6200 should all do the job, do note that hardware accelerated video only works on the binary drivers at the moment, and the ATI binary driver can be very buggy at times. But if you can live without video acceleration, one of the ATI grathics cards with the OSS Radeon driver will give you a very nice 2D experiance with KMS etc! Sorry for the long post! A question about mixing releases
I use apt-pinning to mix stable, testing and sid. because of a bug in Squeeze I've installed fglrx-modules-dkms from sid. Today I got an update for my fglrx packages I noticed these were pulled in from a sid repository. My question is the following: if you install a package from an unstable repository does it mean that apt/aptitude then tracks unstable updates for that package? Your case is but one of many reasons I've have scolded this industry for many years WRT OS/application level control of hardware features such as voltages, frequencies, and fan speeds. If the hardware and/or BIOS are designed properly, there is no need for application software level controls. Pull out your mobo manual and solve your problem. Thanks, Stan. YOU solved my problem. I knew I was missing something, but my search was defective and I wasn't finding what I needed. You gave the clue of the marketing name of the feature that I wanted to control. The manual has no index and the TOC does not mention Qfan. I had already done what I thought was an exhaustive search of the manual, so this time I decided to do a depth first walk of the selection tree in the BIOS user interface. This worked for me. After finding the control for Qfan in the seletion tree, I managed to find it in the paper manual. What? Of course it can't work. Hibernation suspends the OS in a state from which it can continue later. Quite correctly it doesn't unmount filesystems, as this would close all open file descriptors on that file system. This in turn could en up killing processes - quite possibly including your session and maybe all system daemons. Now you're in a state where you might as well have restarted from scratch, negating all the advantages of suspend/hibernation. If you want to use the same filesystem between any two OS installations (whether Linux and Linux, or Windows and Linux, or any other combination) you must not (and cannot) use hibernation unless you first unmount the relevant filesystems. I'm running 2.6.32-3-686 and tried updating to 2.6.32-5-686, but the problem is still the same. lspci: 04:00.0 System peripheral: JMicron Technology Corp. Re: Can't Install Packages in Batch Mode
On Sep 26, 2010, at 5:08 PM, Hal Vaughan wrote: I have a bash script with the following in it: DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive apt-get install $install From what I've read, this should set the front end for debconf to non-interactive and should go on ahead with the install I've set up with a list of packages to install. Everything else in the script works, but as much as I've played with this (like changing DEBIAN_FRONTEND to DEBCONF_FRONTEND), I can't get it to work. I saw one example (from this list, 2-3 years ago) that put it all on one line, but that didn't work either. Do I have to set the environment variable before running the script? What do I need to do to be able to install packages? (There's only one question asked in all these packages and it's a config issue I handle separately anyway.) Thanks for any help with this! I have no idea what made the difference, but I re-typed the lines and re-tried and it worked. I had copied the lines (other than the $install variable) directly from an example. When it didn't work, I tried cutting and pasting from another example and it didn't work, but when I entered it by typing directly, it worked. Probably a typo that I couldn't catch with my learning disability or something. Hal -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Paul E Condon put forth on 9/26/2010 10:33 AM: I also don't like the way the industry presents its products to its customers, but I doubt that any suggestion that I might make would deserve to be taken seriously. Case in point: Buy any IBM server, whether it be a Z-Series mainframe, P-Series, or X-Series, and there is no option in the BIOS or elsewhere to change/control voltages, fan speeds, etc. All of these things are preprogrammed in hardware per engineering specifications. If you're running one of these systems within the environmental limits, 0-8500 ft altitude and 40-85% humidity, non condensing, with power input within the specified AC voltage range, the system will adjust internal voltages and fan speeds automatically. Period. Pull two blades out of one of their blade chassis and the fan speed increases automatically to compensate for lost airflow over the other blades. No software control involved. IBM wants it that way. And that's the way it should be. If users were allowed to monkey with these settings, support calls and warranty repairs go up because folks would overheat their machines in an attempt to make them quieter, or similar. Then you have consumer level machines/mobos whose manufacturers _want_ you to be able to tweak fan speeds and voltages, as a product differentiator. And you have Intel and MS who want to control everything with a software driver as BIOS flashing for new features or code revisions is a PITA compared to OS driver updates. Again, if something is designed correctly to begin with, there is no need for all this BS, OS level software for controlling these hardware features. At best it makes it easier for someone to OC their CPU/GPU. At worst, it allows frying one's system. In between, it merely causes too much unnecessary confusion on the part of users not technically qualified to be monkeying with such settings to begin with. I'm not ranting at you Paul. :) Just ranting at the sillyness of this aspect of the industry. If all fan controls were purely in BIOS/hardware, you'd have never suffered this problem. Anyway, glad I was able to help you find what you needed. -- Stan -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Their closed binaries are usually pretty good. Sometimes they release a bad bug, but they are quick to fix it, and quickly release a patched version. At any rate, one's best best is probably Intel. The more recent GPUs from Intel are well supported in Linux. Heavy 3D support simply requires the NVIDIA blob. No choice.
