Saludos

RAID 1 Server Proliant ML115 [REBUILD]

2010-09-26 Thread Federico Sciarretta Miliozzi

Querida Lista,

nVidia Corporation MCP55 SATA Controller (rev a3)

cambie disco y funcion Rebuild.

#dmraid -l
asr : Adaptec HostRAID ASR (0,1,10)
ddf1: SNIA DDF1 (0,1,4,5,linear)
hpt37x : Highpoint HPT37X (S,0,1,10,01)
hpt45x : Highpoint HPT45X (S,0,1,10)
isw : Intel Software RAID (0,1)
jmicron : JMicron ATARAID (S,0,1)
lsi : LSI Logic MegaRAID (0,1,10)
nvidia : NVidia RAID (S,0,1,10,5) - SOPORTADO
pdc : Promise FastTrack (S,0,1,10)
sil : Silicon Image(tm) Medley(tm) (0,1,10)
via : VIA Software RAID (S,0,1,10)
dos : DOS partitions on SW RAIDs

# dmraid -r
/dev/sdb: nvidia, nvidia_cjdefjag, mirror, ok, 312581806 sectors, data@ 0
/dev/sda: nvidia, nvidia_cjdefjag, mirror, ok, 312581806 sectors, data@ 0

rebuild a nivel fakeraid?

 deben seguir trabajando normalmente.

Normally, I use general d-i, too. But this time, I'd like to try out

I do have other options, like building a new system within an existing

I think why learning about how to initialize an system and custom the

I'd have to say, the documents for this task is pretty rare besides

Well, if you dont want to play games, your choices are, ATI OSS
drivers, nVidia OSS drivers, nVidia binary blob driver.

You can get pretty much any ATI gpu and get everything bar 3D from the
OSS driver, see here [1], here are a few cards that would be fine
[2]-[5]

If you want video decoding in the GPU, you only real option is a nVidia
card with the binary blob (Its iffy on the ATI binary and the OSS
drivers have no support or its iffy) though the only AGP nVidia card i
could find new is this [6] and it will have limited hardware decoding
support due to its older nature.

The number of AGP cards is quite limited, but the HD3xxx or HD4xxx
or a nVidia 6200 should all do the job, do note that hardware
accelerated video only works on the binary drivers at the moment, and
the ATI binary driver can be very buggy at times.

But if you can live without video acceleration, one of the ATI grathics
cards with the OSS Radeon driver will give you a very nice 2D
experiance with KMS etc!

Sorry for the long post!

A question about mixing releases

Yes, that's called 'hold'. Just run

I have DELL desktops that all have NVIDIA cards.. messy to configure
correctly, especially after a kernel update, but they do work.

The nVidia binary driver is generally easy to use and it keeps
pace with kernel and xorg versions compared to the ATI blob, now
that’s a nightmare!

The only problem with FOSS drivers, is that half of the required bits
are in the kernel, and half in userspace, so if you build your own
kernels, you might end up needed to rebuild your graphics driver as
well!

But if you stick to stock kernels, and dont need high performance 3D,
the OSS drivers give the nicest experience, with KMS, high resolution
VT's as standard and smooth 2D etc.

Thanks, with this Pin-Priority packages that you install from unstable
will be updated automatically from there as long as they don't migrate
to testing. This is probably what you want, but if you would like to
avoid it, you could set unstable's Pin-Priority to a value 100 (100 is

Proposal of Fluxbox styles for Debian

2010-09-26 Thread Dale
Hi All,

I have been working on a couple new Fluxbox styles[1] for Debian and
hopefully be added the the Debian packaged version of Fluxbox and one
to maybe come the default style for a Debian release like squeeze, or
the next Debian release.

The 3 styles I have done are called:
* Debian_LibStick Light
* Debian_LibStick Dark High Contrast
* Debian_LibStick Dark

If anyone knows the author(s) of the said wallpaper images used in the
screen shots, could you please let me know so I can add credit to them
in the style source(s), As the images are included in the current
version of Fluxbox 1.1.1+dfsg2-1.

Comments and/or suggestions more than welcome

People on the 'debian-desktop' please email me back directly as I am
not on this mailing list

Regards
Dale

Squeeze NetInstal broke on Ethernet controller detection

2010-09-26 Thread Willy Lambert
Hi all,

I am quite new with using community supports so please be patient and let me
learn if something is wrong. Be sure that I search a week on the net to find
a solution. I'm desesperated :)

*
*

*summary :*

I am trying to install a Debian Squeeze distribution with a netinstall on
a CD media but the installation failed when detected the ethernet card
(despite it should work with the e1000e driver which is included in Debian).
It tried to go further without LAN, but seems to be an infite chain of
problems : if I want to compile the driver I need to apt-get build tools
for which I need Internet... So my strategy is to make the installer
working.

*hardware :*

The target is an Advantech PCM-3362 card (quite the same content as a
netbook without the wifi in a PC104 size)
http://www.advantech.com.tw/products/PCM-3362/mod_2B69DA4C-D506-4AEA-8CC3-F6E58E3CBC87.aspx
the aim is to embedded it in a mobile robot.

Its Ethernet controller is an Intel 82567V, which should be working with an
e1000e driver
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=YDwnldID=15817ProdId=3003lang=eng
You can find here a detailed article about the Advantech board, in
particular its bus and component architecture at the end :
http://ruggedpcreview.com/3_components_advantech_pcm3362.html

lspci shows :
00:19.0 Ethernet controller : Intel Corporation 82567V-3 Gigabit Network
Connection (rev 04)
00.1e.0 PCI bridge : Intel Corporation 82801 Mobile PCI Bridge (rev f4)
and other things

*details :*

The installer broke when detecting the ethernet controller. I have a menu in
which I can choose e1000e (and also e100 e1000). when I choose it, the
screen became blue, things happens (see below) and then the menu is back
again as if it has not found my controller

In the the fourth console (ctrl+f4=installer log) I can read after hiting
e1000e in the menu when things happens:
_ ${date} kernel [$[time]] e1000e : Intel (R) PRO/1000 Network Driver
-0.3.3.4-k4
_ ${date} kernel [$[time]] e1000e : Copyrigth (c) 1999-20008 Intel
Corporation
_ ethdetect : insmod
/lib/modules/2.6.30-2-484/kernel/drivers/net/e1000e/e1000e.ko

when I test in the installer console (ctrl+f2 or ctrl+f3) lsmod, I found the
e1000e module (it was not here before I choose it in the ethernet detection
menu). So everything seems to be correct.

I used an i386 version of debian whereas my CPU is an Atom 64b, I don't know
if this is problematic

*help :*

So anyone could help me finding why this menu don't want to select my
controller ?

thanks in advance for your attention

I make it as an Atom N450:-

Paul you're hardware handicapped. :( All the modern Asus boards (and

user configurable BIOS settings. Apparently you never read your
motherboard manual. You need no OS level software to control the fan speed.

You can whine over it worked but now it doesn't, and why is that? or
you can simply go into your BIOS and set it the way you want and be done

Your case is but one of many reasons I've have scolded this industry for
many years WRT OS/application level control of hardware features such as
voltages, frequencies, and fan speeds. If the hardware and/or BIOS are
designed properly, there is no need for application software level controls.

Pull out your mobo manual and solve your problem.

Thanks, Stan.

YOU solved my problem. I knew I was missing something, but my search
was defective and I wasn't finding what I needed. You gave the clue
of the marketing name of the feature that I wanted to control. The
manual has no index and the TOC does not mention Qfan. I had already
done what I thought was an exhaustive search of the manual, so this
time I decided to do a depth first walk of the selection tree in the
BIOS user interface. This worked for me.

After finding the control for Qfan in the seletion tree, I managed to
find it in the paper manual.

I also don't like the way the industry presents its products to its
customers, but I doubt that any suggestion that I might make would
deserve to be taken seriously.

Thanks.

Actually, that *will* work with spaces in the filenames[1], since the shell

common, characters that can confuse read though: '\', '', and NL.

No, it won't.

Its ARM based and comes with windows CE, people seem to have managed to

But, as these kind of devices generally have no (normal and able

There are quite a few different ones around, if you can find one that

Can't Install Packages in Batch Mode

2010-09-26 Thread Hal Vaughan
I have a bash script with the following in it:

DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive
apt-get install $install

From what I've read, this should set the front end for debconf to
non-interactive and should go on ahead with the install I've set up with a list
of packages to install. Everything else in the script works, but as much as
I've played with this (like changing DEBIAN_FRONTEND to DEBCONF_FRONTEND), I
can't get it to work. I saw one example (from this list, 2-3 years ago) that
put it all on one line, but that didn't work either.

Do I have to set the environment variable before running the script? What do I
need to do to be able to install packages? (There's only one question asked in
all these packages and it's a config issue I handle separately anyway.)

Thanks for any help with this!

 know that!

What? Of course it can't work. Hibernation suspends the OS in a state
from which it can continue later. Quite correctly it doesn't unmount
filesystems, as this would close all open file descriptors on that file
system. This in turn could en up killing processes - quite possibly
including your session and maybe all system daemons. Now you're in a
state where you might as well have restarted from scratch, negating all
the advantages of suspend/hibernation.

If you want to use the same filesystem between any two OS installations
(whether Linux and Linux, or Windows and Linux, or any other combination)
you must not (and cannot) use hibernation unless you first unmount the
relevant filesystems.

You need to remove those last two lines, the ones that have
lilo-update in them. At one time I recommended this for squeeze
users that use only stock kernels, but I don't anymore. Besides,
either you didn't write a corresponding lilo-update script or
it got deleted somehow. Either way, you need to get rid of those
two lines in /etc/kernel-img.conf.

I haven't gone through the rest of the changes yet. Working on that right
 now.

Also, in /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume, the file should reference
the swap partition, not the root partition, either directly or via a UUID.
Older versions of the Debian installer contained a version of mkswap that
did not assign a UUID. Also, if you install another operating system
in another partition, such as Ubuntu, it may reformat the swap partition,
which will change its UUID. You can either use

RESUME=/dev/sda4

or

RESUME=UUID=558d7790-5914-494d-938f-3387296eed45

Look in directory /etc/modprobe.d for a file called i915-kms.conf.
Look at the contents of that file. Does it say

   options i915 modeset=0

If so, change the 0 to 1 and file it, then shutdown and reboot.
If no such file exists, then create it, specifying modeset as 1.

You need to remove those last two lines, the ones that have
lilo-update in them. At one time I recommended this for squeeze
users that use only stock kernels, but I don't anymore. Besides,
either you didn't write a corresponding lilo-update script or
it got deleted somehow. Either way, you need to get rid of those
 two lines in /etc/kernel-img.conf.

done. that explains the errors. that's the problem with this stuff is
unwinding the call stack.

Is there a magic option to pass apt-get or dpkg which will produce more
verbose output ?

Didn't see anything obvious in the manpage except for the quiet
 parameter.

I haven't gone through the rest of the changes yet. Working on
  that right now.

Also, in /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume, the file should reference
the swap partition, not the root partition, either directly or via a
UUID. Older versions of the Debian installer contained a version of
mkswap that did not assign a UUID. Also, if you install another
operating system in another partition, such as Ubuntu, it may
reformat the swap partition, which will change its UUID. You can
 either use

 RESUME=/dev/sda4

 or

 RESUME=UUID=558d7790-5914-494d-938f-3387296eed45

I'm not use if it makes a difference, but that file was referencing the
uuid, so I changed it to point at /dev/sda, simply to be consistent
with my fstab and lilo.conf.

my guess is that it will break if I put another disk drive in, right ?

Since ATI was acquired by AMD, they have made great strides in the quality of

I also have good hopes for the 5xxx line, as the AMD engineers are already

Re: AMD 'cool quiet' stopped working in squeeze (and lenny?)

2010-09-26 Thread Stan Hoeppner
Paul E Condon put forth on 9/26/2010 10:33 AM:

I also don't like the way the industry presents its products to its
customers, but I doubt that any suggestion that I might make would
 deserve to be taken seriously.

Case in point: Buy any IBM server, whether it be a Z-Series mainframe,
P-Series, or X-Series, and there is no option in the BIOS or elsewhere
to change/control voltages, fan speeds, etc. All of these things are
preprogrammed in hardware per engineering specifications. If you're
running one of these systems within the environmental limits, 0-8500 ft
altitude and 40-85% humidity, non condensing, with power input within
the specified AC voltage range, the system will adjust internal voltages
and fan speeds automatically. Period. Pull two blades out of one of
their blade chassis and the fan speed increases automatically to
compensate for lost airflow over the other blades. No software control
involved. IBM wants it that way. And that's the way it should be. If
users were allowed to monkey with these settings, support calls and
warranty repairs go up because folks would overheat their machines in an
attempt to make them quieter, or similar.

Then you have consumer level machines/mobos whose manufacturers _want_
you to be able to tweak fan speeds and voltages, as a product
differentiator. And you have Intel and MS who want to control
everything with a software driver as BIOS flashing for new features or
code revisions is a PITA compared to OS driver updates.

Again, if something is designed correctly to begin with, there is no
need for all this BS, OS level software for controlling these hardware
features. At best it makes it easier for someone to OC their CPU/GPU.
At worst, it allows frying one's system. In between, it merely causes
too much unnecessary confusion on the part of users not technically
qualified to be monkeying with such settings to begin with.

I'm not ranting at you Paul. :) Just ranting at the sillyness of this
aspect of the industry. If all fan controls were purely in
BIOS/hardware, you'd have never suffered this problem.

Anyway, glad I was able to help you find what you needed.

I must differ.

NVIDIA don't do open source because they believe they must keep closed
to compete with AMD/ATI. Whether that's true or not is a matter of
another discussion. Their closed binaries are usually pretty good.
Sometimes they release a bad bug, but they are quick to fix it, and
quickly release a patched version. At any rate, one's best best is
probably Intel. The more recent GPUs from Intel are well supported in
Linux. Heavy 3D support simply requires the NVIDIA blob. No choice.
Soon the Nouveau driver will change that, but for now...

Further investigations show the sd card is not working anymore either.
Could a power outage cause damage like that? Leaving it on battery power
till it goes flat? Could that fry both the card reader and the card?

I have a bug here and I don't know which package is to blame. My first
thought was the kernel, but the kernel is the same. Something else is
fouling up the modules. I'm running 2.6.32-3-686 and tried updating to

IPv4-routing

j...@servertje:~$ ping 10.0.133.1
PING 10.133.133.1 (10.0.133.1) 56(84) bytes of data.

Pingen naar mijn smartphone lukt ook.

Nokia-N900-02-8:~#

route 10.0.134.0 255.255.255.0

Wat doe ik verkeerd?
